More polished and mature than her previous albums, but sounds a bit 'samey' and lacking the excitement of the debut album.
Just been playing this, and I actually quite like it, though I agree the previous two are preferable. Still better than many bands' best efforts though.

However, despite a catalogue of stars dueting and contributing somehow the whole is not greater than the sum of its parts which is a pity as it would then be a album worthy of the title "one of the great albums". It is at least far more worthy than Girl In The Other Room, which just doesn't work for me, sorry Elvis!

In case you didn't know, Ms. Robinson did a lot of work with Leonard Cohen. It was her vocal performance on Cohen's "Live in London" LP (Boogie Street) that piqued my interest.

Good grief! This is an album that will exploit the full range capabilities of any speaker it comes up against... I suspect that bass goes some way below the reaches of my set up. But not only that, the whole frequency range has been given the Yello treatment, as is their wont.. The music's pretty good too, with some superb contributions from a couple of female guest vocalists that I have never heard of, but will look up. :) CD only I think, but that's no hardship.

The Pogues... the furthest I have ever travelled for a concert, and I wasn't even a fan. But a mate couldn't get anyone else to go with him. Must have been around 1991. It was an outdoor event in Harlow Essex. Might have been a leisure centre, but it had some man-made shallow body of water, like a moat.
Great gig, great party atmosphere, we all ended up in that 'moat', and stunk the car out for the 200-odd mile trip home. Happy days.
And Shane MacGowan still looks like he has been dragged through a hedge backwards and has slept in his suit! :D
They certainly play like a good time band. Glad you enjoyed the gig. :)

So this morning will be vinyl only and predominantly 1970's prog rock. So a fest of tracks unlikely to be heard on the radio unless you listen to Johnnie Walker Sounds of the 70's on Radio 2 Sundays at 3pm or his Rock show on Fridays at 11pm both available on BBC Sounds, sadly Johnnie is not on air at the moment whilst recovering from a heart condition but Bob Harris and Shaun Keaveny are doing a fine job standing in. The Wishbone Ash album is the only compilation album but if you have nothing of Wishbone Ash this is an excellent collection of some of their most notable work, Outward Bound being one of my favourite instrumental tracks of all time.

I too have the highly regarded Hitachi FT5500mk2 Tuner, boxed up at the moment, how do you find the Wilson speakers I've never heard their speakers but have heard the turntable and arm that they started their business with.

I went through various speakers over the last 8 years, Dali Ikon 6(a big loose in the bass), Vienna Acoustic Mozart Grand SE(lovely SQ, difficult to position, rear ported), Impulse H2's(great speakers, not WAF friendly), Wison Benesch ARCs(lovely pure sound, but like a monitor), Tannoy Legacy Arden's(sounded good, not sure about mids, and not WAF friendly).
I went to the WB Vectors about 4 years ago and they are great, very pure sound and detailed, get very good bass from them considering their size, not too fussy with room placement, previously used a 300B valve amp with them but it did not do them justice. They really sing with the Krell power amp, lots of bass and controlled. I think I would only part with them for another pair of WBs up the chain or possibly a pair of Avalons, but then we are talking silly money for either (+£15K).

My favourite live band thier stage shows particularly are amongst the best by any band, check out the video of the 2007 tour. The stage, audio and lighting set cost £15million !

I don't post pictures of the actual CDs or LPs I play: invariably they are taken from discogs, but I do take the trouble in finding an image there of one with the correct artwork and date and country of origin.
And like you I have no need to shout.
Regarding Classical music, it's a huge subject to cover. Since almost always the composer was not able to have a recording made of either their performance, or of them conducting/directing an ensemble playing their work, recordings available are those of modern ensambles. Performances of the same piece by different performers can sound as different as playing the same LP with different cartridges.

For those who have never heard of Peter Grant, this is his debut 2006 album. Leeds born and in every sense the equal of Matt Monroe or even Michael Bublι this album contains a raft of great songs, superb arrangements and vocals to equal or better any of the most well known versions of these songs. I cannot remember the exact date, that was from a site I checked but it was in the summer and it ties up when Ian stayed at the shared house in Tooting. I remember they played all of Boy and a few new songs which were to go on October. They were really friendly and invited us to Ireland later in the summer, but we never went. I remember Bono then was pretty relaxed and was rather different to how he was perceived 20 years later on.

Well this was bought on the back of radio airplay of "Spaceship" and is an album worthy of a place in anyone's collection it deals with the dark and light of life and although not a through and through country album, it will please diehard country fans and crossover fans too. It shows off her vocal range to great effect and her ability be both upbeat and reflective. Next up, well what can you say about Gregory Porter, that hasn't already been said. Despite the questionable cover artwork which might give the impression that there was no budget for artwork so a hotel pool and a friend with their phone camera was the best option available ! A trip down memory lane, a friend who wrote for record mirror at the time gave me a pre-release copy on vinyl, he knew them, and I saw them live about 9 months later just before October was released. I had forgotten just how good this album is, a definitive U2 for me, full of energy and fun, so here I am 43 years later and still absolutely love it, I suppose I have never grown up really.

So my Thursday morning starts with one of my favourite live jazz albums. Andre Previn should perhaps need no introduction, his extraordinary career had three main genres: Holywood films, jazz and classical music. In his film career he was nominated for 11 Oscars winning four. He received a Grammy lifetime achievement award and a Kennedy Centre Honor for his contribution to classical music, as well as KBE (as a non commonwealth citizen he was only permitted to use the letters KBE and not the title of Sir Andre). As for the remaining cast, the renown and influence of Ray Brown is legendary, notably as a founding member of the Modern Jazz Quartet and his extensive work with Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson. Mundell Lowe is perhaps the least we'll known but his career included being one of the most sought after session guitarist and he was a member of the Today Show band for ten years, in the jazz world he worked with Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, Bill Evans, Billie Holiday, Red Norvo, Charles Mingus, Charlie Parker, Sauter-Finegan and Lester Young to name but a few.

Next up is a must have in any jazz collection, this album from the man referred to as "The Sound", because of his warm lyrical tone, is considered as one of the most influential albums in bringing Bossa Nova to the USA, winning him a Grammy for best Jazz Performance in 1963. To finish the morning before work beckons this glorious album from the iconic Oscar Peterson, I saw him live in the 80's and what a talent, he once said of jazz "you can take an audience on a journey but you must always remember to bring them back" his playing was just that, never losing sight of the melody no matter how inventive the interpretation. Despite a stroke in 1993 diminishing his playing in his left hand he continued to perform occasionally with one commentator stating " Peterson plays better with his right hand than most jazz pianists play with both hands".
