Virtually anything by Ry Cooder is good - but I have my doubts regarding' Bop Till You Drop'.

It was Cooder's first digital recording, and it shows. Spatially all the musicians are flat and pop in and out like the flags on an old-fashioned cash register, or the ducks in a fairground shooting gallery. Shame because the musicianship and writing are up there with Cooder's best.

So my Thursday morning starts with one of my favourite live jazz albums. Andre Previn should perhaps need no introduction, his extraordinary career had three main genres: Holywood films, jazz and classical music. In his film career he was nominated for 11 Oscars winning four. He received a Grammy lifetime achievement award and a Kennedy Centre Honor for his contribution to classical music, as well as KBE (as a non commonwealth citizen he was only permitted to use the letters KBE and not the title of Sir Andre). As for the remaining cast, the renown and influence of Ray Brown is legendary, notably as a founding member of the Modern Jazz Quartet and his extensive work with Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson. Mundell Lowe is perhaps the least we'll known but his career included being one of the most sought after session guitarist and he was a member of the Today Show band for ten years, in the jazz world he worked with Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, Bill Evans, Billie Holiday, Red Norvo, Charles Mingus, Charlie Parker, Sauter-Finegan and Lester Young to name but a few.

What's it like Adrian? I've seen Richard Hawley interiewed on TV, but have never heard him play.

I really like him, ‘Standing at the Edge of the Sky’ says it all really, swirling guitar and keyboards, a psychedelic feel and good songs.

‘Lady’s Bridge’ is stunning and ‘Hollow Meadows’ has a slightly different feel. In fact I am thinking of choosing one of them for the Album choice of the month. But I do have another album in mind, I was going for enjoyment for my next album choice, hoping to get a few audio grins rather than grimaces[emoji4]

I would be surprised if you did not enjoy some of it, but we’re all different.

Thanks for the reply. There are many artist(e)s who have passed me by, and whilst I might have heard of them, have never investigated any of their work.

That is what I like about this thread (which is usually the first I turn to after logging on), it has introduced me to new music; recommended by people whose opinion I trust.

Finally, before work beckons, this collection of the Shirley Bassey songbook accompanied by the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Carl Davis. A early 80's digital recording using a Sony PCM 3324 multi track recorder, which on many systems can sound a tad too digital, which is a shame, as her vocals and three octave range are at times spine tingling and the arrangements are suitably large scale as befits the songs and her voice.

Try “Waiting for Miracles” for Flower Kings, they are prolific and it hard to know where to start, or ‘Stardust We Are’ is considered a good early one, I like both.

I've just read some reviews, and it would appear that it is a very, very good example of a live Zappa performance. The recording quality is said to be very good (especially for a 27 year old set of tapes).

Having seen Zappa play on a couple of occasions, I may well get myself a copy.

Yes that is interesting. I think I may like that. I do have "Roxy & Elsewhere", which is close to 50 years old. My ownership goes back as far as my old Fidelity mono record player, so has become a little tired.

Regrettably I never got to see him live.

IMO, one of the best of the Alan Parsons Project LPs. (Well that along with 'The Eye in the Sky'.)

Yes it is one of his best, I have all of APP and his, some of the most recent are very good, I like ‘Try Anything Once’ and ‘On Air’, worth a listen.

First up a somewhat overlooked album of the great Billy Joel. Preceeded by the enormously successful Innocent Man and followed by the equally successful Stormfront, The Bridge is perhaps forgotten yet it is packed with great tracks from the A Matter of Trust, This is the Time, Modern Woman and the fabulous duet with Ray Charles, Baby Grand to the querky Big Man on Mulberry Street and catchy Running on Ice.
