And what are your thoughts re Mothership and The Remasters?

I don't know yet, I'm going to retrieve the "Remasters" one from my friends when I go round tonight. And then I probably still won't know for sure because I'm terrible with a/b comparisons (though I'm pretty good with muesli), so if the differences are subtle I'll have no chance.

I'll just be happy to own the version that everyone says is the better. Because if I'm honest I've never been too impressed with Zep's sq on anything I've heard. Good job the songs are great :)

Excellent choice! :)

Strange thing is Barry, when I bought this (must be easily 15 years ago) I thought it was disappointingly ordinary. So I never played it again. Until today (I'm currently giving a few recordings a second chance), and I have to say I love it, and it will now become a regular play :) How can this happen? Makes no sense to me

The album puts me in mind of the soundtrack to "O Brother, Where Art Thou", which should come as no surprise as Ms. Krauss does perform on a few of the film's songs.

For years I couldn't stand the sound of Neil Young's voice. To me it sounded thin and 'whiney'.

Then a few years ago I heard After the Goldrush and did a complete volte face and now I love his work (apart from his 'grunge' period).

I don't know if he has a grunge 'period'. His collaborations with Crazy Horse are usually more rocky than his solo albums, but he's been doing those off and on for more than 40 years.

Barry
24-03-2024, 16:12
Yes I was referring to 'Rust Never Sleeps' with Craxy Horse.

Neil Young is regarded by many as the "Grandfather of Grunge".

I had a copy of that but couldn't get on with it. I'm afraid I haven't been impressed with Fagin's solo work: I only really like the title track of 'Nightfly'.

Do you know if Walter Becker did any solo work that was recorded?

'11 Tracks Of Whack' (1994) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/11_Tracks_of_Whack

'Circus Money' (2008) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Circus_Money

Both worth having but a bit pricey now even on CD (not sure 'll Tracks' ever had a vinyl release).

I think 'Kamakiriad' has some great stuff on it - 'Snowbound', and pretty much all of side 2.

Anything by AC/DC is top notch - especially the albums from the beginning (TNT HIGH VOLTAGE) through to (and including) THE RAZORS EDGE and then they slightly taper off a bit but they're still great!! Hard to really say what my fav album is as they're all so good - Powerage, Highway To Hell, Dirty Deeds, Back In Black, For Those About To Rock, Flick Of The Switch are right up the top!!!! PWRUP is good aswell !!

After revisiting "Raising Sand" last week I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed it. Enough to prompt me to buy this. Pretty much the same kind of thing. Largely 'bluegrass', which with Ms. Krauss providing the vocals sounds just about perfect. The remaining ones with Robert Plant singing I'm less keen on, though still good.

Overall it's a sound I seem to have grown into, so much so that I've just ordered a copy of this:

No, it's about 15 years old now. I got it cheap at a car boot a few years ago, played part of it, wasn't keen, then forgot about it. Until today. Much like I did with the Robert Plant/Alison Krauss CD.

I'm really liking it, enough to make me want to try more of his solo work. This particular copy comes with a bonus CD - I'm just coming to the end of CD1, and will be following it with the 'bonus' disc (which usually aren't worth the extra outlay, but this does include a couple of live tracks so we'll see).

BOB VYLAN - HUMBLE AS THE SUN. Released yesterday, arrived on my doorstep today; been looking forward to this one to see if he keeps up his angry stance against the many prejudices he feels strongly about. The answer is YES and he's kept the same formula as the previous album (heavy guitars crossed with powerful lyrics). WELL GOOD!!!!

I like probably about a third of it. The bass power in parts is really something, with the wick turned up I can feel the sofa moving under me (I do like a bit of bass) :) But the novelty wears off, and then you are left with what is largely, as you describe, rather pedestrian. I can just about sit through CD1, but the second disc I find almost unlistenable.

And the awful cardboard sleeve is neither one size nor t'other :(

Yes why do they do that? I don't mind so-called "de luxe" covers, as long as they are the same height and depth of a normal CD ( with its horrible polycarbonate case that is asking to become cracked, especially the front and hinge!).

It's a collaboration between Simon Ponsford(Shpongle) and Benji Vaughan. It is sort of on the lines of Shpongle but a bit less trancey, lots swirling rhythms and vibes. The following album https://www.discogs.com/master/14073-Younger-Brother-The-Last-Days-Of-Gravity is also very good.

After watching a documentary on the making of Paul Simon's "Graceland" at the weekend, I thought I'd give this a go. I bought it a couple of years ago, but never got round to playing it.

She joined Paul Simon for his Graceland tour, along with Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Hugh Masekela. It caused a lot of upset with Artists Against Apartheid and the ANC, as did the making of the album, due to the UN-approved cultural boycott in force at the time.

The documentary is called "Under African Skies", showing on Sky Arts. Worth a watch.

It's the version I have.

A great LP, but I still have doubts concerning the cover: the girl at the extreme left looks very much ill at ease. Such cover artwork would not be tolerated, or even suggested, today.

I had these back in the 70s, 2 separate albums. These days I just have the same 'double' version as you. I much prefer this album art. Mekons on the back cover! :)

Beautifully put together. A masterpiece.

I like Goldfrapp a lot. I have all of their albums, as well as her solo one from last year. Though for me nothing quite compares to "Felt Mountain", which is probably in my top 20 albums by anyone ever.

So true Loz. You know I like The Fixx, but recently my favourite has switched from "Reach The Beach" to this :)

I can understand you swapping to this; to me, this is THE best album The Fixx have done or will ever do - it's utterly sublime!!!!!

I still cant understand why the record companies have added different tracks to the later CD releases of this album - to me, they dont fit in with the original tracklisting of the vinyl release. This is an album that I prefer the vinyl version (WHICH, AS YOU PROBABLY KNOW, IS UNUSUAL FOR ME AS I AM A PERSON WHO PREFERS LISTENING TO CD's).

I did not know the tracklisting is different on the CDs, all my albums are vinyl - so you wouldn't say adding the CDs is worth the bother then?

THE TRACKLISTING IS DIFFERENT ON THE CD's COMPARED TO THE VINYL;

From Discogs - the later Fueler Edtn of the CD:-
https://www.discogs.com/release/676592-The-Fixx-Shuttered-Room

From Discogs - the original vinyl version:-
https://www.discogs.com/master/70192-The-Fixx-Shuttered-Room

From Discogs - the later Repertoire Edtn of the CD:-
https://www.discogs.com/release/1020668-The-Fixx-Shuttered-Room

Their are lots of different releases on CD by different companies; they all seem to have variations in tracks etc. I would go for the original release of the MCA CD if you could get it or one that closely replicates the original tracklisting. You, like me, might like to obtain the CD but, you probably won't bother when you see the price people are asking for it - it's totally ridiculous!!!!! I PROBABLY WOULDN'T BOTHER, JUST STICK TO YOUR VINYL LIKE ME (UNLESS YOU CAN GET THE CD AT A SENSIBLE PRICE) !!

Just a suggestion, you could do what I did and that is, record your vinyl onto a CD; mine came out superb. I can play either now!! It's better than paying absolutely insane prices for a CD that cost approx £10-12 and now paying THE STUPID GREEDY B45T4RD5 ON EBAY upto anything like this:-

I have some rare vinyl, if I do ever sell it, it won't be cheap.

Trouble is, it isn't exactly rare; there's plenty of re-releases by about 6/7 companies. I put it down to just stupid greed..... simple as that!!!!

Here's another example of SHEER GREED ON EBAY :-

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/394641953268?epid=12052224491&itmmeta=01HV736RVSDJGCYETFMT1GEESK&hash=item5be27e51f4:g:faIAAOSw5upkoR7w&itmprp=enc%3AAQAJAAAA4ON4b2zqYg%2FwRtn5dpvGzmmzlqq epgp2j7BvC8Ql2OqisqznoAzk7IjXWO5%2F7Sxi7leIB8NkEBu xSenJkT6IzRsRSRNAkbnOZrdbYIwAW5MmCin840j8hLdtDJUIg aJidudf1UftS8HNfaJLiLTyVHGwuMkc68CaH0zh0%2BAypDlzE h93Z6xJdCHu7AJHExzS1enjVGh3I%2B%2BBW4h3tC3OMh%2F9g OG4FLQnXIHOUMOR9XNFYQlcoYSm%2BpGVWjbd6vJMIeGHtdvYA dB7IZTWnM%2FCJxiLsmVwVwDZ9Hl%2BYs0BG33Q%7Ctkp%3ABk 9SR_yNm-PZYw

This album is just an everyday release, nothing rare about it and they're asking £124 and oh, I nearly forgot, 68p and incredibly, they've offered free post; that was decent of them wasn't it!!

https://i.postimg.cc/9F93hJYj/033.jpg

There is no information about this CD on Discogs, as it was privately recorded and 'pressed'. All I can do is quote verbatim from the sleeve notes:

"This CD is a collection of covers and original songs. The covers and also 'Hey Mr. Postman' were recorded in Amsterdam in August 97, and feature Carlos Varnos on the electric guitar. The following five compositions were produced later the same year in Rio de Janeiro, my home town, with session musicians."

Tracks:

1 No woman no cry/Knocking on heaven's door
2 While my guitar gently weeps
3 Teach your children
4 All along the watchtower
5 Hey Mr. Postman
6 Glad to carry on
7 Holiday
8 In the maze of my heart
9 No matter what you say
10 Almost

I was reminded of this by Piggurs, as it was Jan Hammer's birthday yesterday. Haven't played it for a long time and I now know why - it's awful: Jeff Beck might as well have not been there; Jan Hammer's synthesisers dominating the whole sound . It's a live recording, so the performance might have been enjoyable and exciting, but on LP none of that comes across. :(

Jeff Beck With Terry Bozzio And Tony Hymas – 'Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop'

Label: Epic – 463472 1
Format: Vinyl, LP, Album
Country: Europe
Released: 1989
Genre: Rock, Blues
Style: Blues Rock, Fusion, Alternative Rock

Verdict - IMO much, much better than his collaboration with Jan Hammer, but not as good as his early recordings: 'Truth' and 'Beck-Ola'.

10 Almost

I have to say I rather like this disc, picked up in a charity shop. An example of pure Serendipity! :)

I can see only one copy of this on Ebay, on offer for over 13 quid, so you did pretty good there :)

With less than 3 days to go, I'm still the highest bidder :(

I agree, it's not bad, but not good either. And the same applies to 'Blow By Blow'; a couple of tracks are ruined IMO by the use of a 'voice box' (or is it a 'vocoder?), a sound processing device I detest with its horrible nasal sound.

I have come to the conclusion that the later Beck collaborations were almost becoming a sort of funky AOR.

His first two albums: 'Truth' and 'Beck-Ola' are the only two worth keeping - the rest are going to go to a charity shop (unless anyone here wants them).

Oddly I meet Jean-Jacques Burnel and I think Hugh Cornwell at a house in Brixton when I replied to a music ad in NME in the early 80's, they were looking for a guttiest for a project. We tried some stuff out in the basement studio, but I did not make the grade. Then in 1995 when Sue and I moved to a village about 8 miles from Milton Keynes we discovered Jean-Jacques Burnel owned a cottage about 7 houses down the road from us, bizarre.

I never met any of them, but saw them live about 1979, supported by The Skids, if you remember them. Then I think I saw them at a Rock 'n' Blues festival in Derbyshire about 20 years ago, but I can't be sure, I was a bit out of it that weekend :)

I don't know what that is?

It's 1980s Goth Rock with a drum machine. Not sure you'd be into it. 'Floodland' is now considered a bit of a classic, apparently. I got it back when it came out on my 'The NME hate it, so it must be good' buying system.

I was being facetious; 'The Sisters of Mercy' is a track off Leonard Cohen's debut album.

The track refers to two women Cohen met in Edmonton, Canada.
Despite the title, they were not from any religious order - far from it: 'Ladies of the Night' would be a more accurate description! :D

Morning all, it's been awhile. My early mornings have been taken up with of all things, binge watching the Netflix series Billions, a series that didn't appeal to my better half (hence the early morning watching) which was a pity as it is a great TV drama with twists and turns a plenty ! Anyway this post is about spinning not witching and I start the day as usual with cd and this excellent double album from one of my all time favourite rock bands. I have this album on the 2 LP version a late 70's pressing, the original 2 cd release and the later 2 cd remastered version which is playing now. The remastered version is certainly better and closer in overall balance to the vinyl pressing with much better detail and definition than the original cd version. My first introduction to Genesis was post Gabriel material, Trick of the Tail, so the earlier tracks on here I first discovered as Collins vocals. Genesis was also one my first rock concerts too, in April 1980, on the Duke tour at the ABC Theatre Blackpool. Subsequent tours would be arena and stadiums as Duke was to catapult them to becoming one of the biggest bands of the 80's and early 90's. Thier 2007 reunion tour, Turn It On Again, having one of the most elaborate and expensive stage and lighting rigs ever created at an estimated cost of £11 million, a total of 48 shows, with the audience at the free Rome concert estimated at over 500,000 !

Morning all, well I thought I would start with a couple of discs from the The Discovery Box Set by Pink Floyd, namely Dark Side of the Moon and Wish You Were Here.

Originally released in 2011 as the Why Pink Floyd ? Discovery Edition with remastered versions of all the studio albums up to 2011 e.g. The Piper at the Gates of Dawn to 1967 The Division Bell 1994, 14 albums in all. This box set has some mixed comments mainly around the box set added bits, i.e packaging, notes etc., personally I would say overall the package is very good there is a 60 page booklet of art work from the period commissioned by Pink Floyd some of which is previously unpublished. The purists might decry that the individual gate fold cardboard sleeve albums are not all a faithful reproduction of the original LP artwork and that the antistatic sleeves for the CD's are unnecessary and fiddly! However, for me the packaging overall is very good and more importantly the "Remastered" versions are excellent, although admittedly I don't have all the albums on vinyl or previous cd releases* to compare, however, those I do have, I can say these versions are certainly better with a greater sense of attack and decay in cymbals and tom tom's, overall midrange detail is better, instrument separation/ soundstage is wider and deeper along with better bass articulation and depth. There's also a almost complete absence of any tape noise too and no apparent lack of top end air or "sparkle" and there's certainly no feeling of compressed dynamics especially given the limitations of the original recordings for many of the albums.

The Piper at the Gates of Dawn (August 1967)

A Saucerful of Secrets (June 1968)

More (June 1969)

Ummagumma (October 1969)

Atom Heart Mother (October 1970)

Meddle (gate fold) (October 1971)

Obscured by Clouds (June 1972)

The Dark Side of the Moon (March 1973)

Wish You Were Here (September 1975)

Animals (January 1977)

The Wall (November 1979)

The Final Cut (March 1983)

A Momentary Lapse of Reason (September 1987)

The Division Bell (March 1994)

* I have the Shine On CD box set and early 80's cd releases of Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall (Japan pressing) and on vinyl I have Atom Heart Mother, Meddle, Dark Side of the Moon, Wish You Were Here, The Wall and A Momentary Lapse of Reason.
