Another excellent LP Adrian. :)
I had my LP-S cartridge checked and tweaked by Dom at Northwest Analogue, so been listening to a few good albums to see how it is. It now sounds excellent with wonderful clear resolution and open soundstage, worth every penny, and the diamond shows no sign of wear.

Hi Dom, not so familiar with their first album, although I heard it many years ago, is it worth getting in your opinion? :)
I used to have 'Flying Teapot' but it didnt stay with me for long. Very disappointed, and so I never pursued any of their other recordings. :rolleyes:

Its less wigged out than Camembert or the Teapot trio, but quietly points the way to things to come
Im a bit of a completist when it comes to Gong so perhaps the wrong person to ask purchase advice ;-)

I really like this recording - it's on the Bluenote label, so no surprise there then.
St. Germain - 'Boulevard, the complete series'
Rather disappointed with this earlier (1995) recording. There are some long tracks which don't really develop, and to me are little more than background music.

Undoubtedly, one of our finest blues guitarists. B.B. King commented, "He has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats." Thankfully, despite suffering with his mental health for most of his life he left us with a legacy of great music with songs, such as "Albatross", "Black Magic Woman", "Oh Well", "The Green Manalishi (With the Two Prong Crown)" and "Man of the World" , we forget the original name for Fleetwood Mac was in fact Peter Greens Fleetwood Mac. Along with those late 60's albums with McVie and Fleetwood there are a collection of solo and collaboration albums including seven albums with the Peter Green Splinter Group after his return to playing in the late 90's.

This album has a who's who of musicians not least some great guitar from Tony Joe White.
We should all thank Roger Davies for giving us the rebirth of one the greatest female performers of all time !

Now, I don't profess to love this band or to have more than a smattering and cross section of thier huge catalogue * including compilations of thier early 60's and 70's work plus a couple of iconic albums from the 80's right up to this latest album (£6 new from Amazon). I was fortunate enough to see them in the 80's at Roundhay Park, where apparently the whole perimeter fence was repainted as the band didn't like the colour and also they insisted on a Japanese water garden compete with Koi carp being created backstage! However, the huge staging for this event was to set the template for how large scale music gigs would be done accross the world and still are !
However, there's also no denying thier songs can get not just "under your thumb" but under your skin !

There are several incarnations of this great band but undoubtedly the most commercially successful period, chart wise, was the Fish era with eleven top 40 UK singles and four top 10 UK albums including a number 1 album with Misplaced Childhood in 1985.

Maybe it's a bit like seeing a film at the cinema for the first time, where you hear great reviews, and go to the cinema with high expectations - only to be disappointed. Well this is the opposite, and with music - After the critical panning I really wasn't expecting much, but was pleasantly surprised :) Not great, but not grim listening either. I actually remember it very well, even though forty-odd years have passed since I last heard it.
Probably won't get a lot of plays, but I don't feel short-changed either. And the record really is almost like new. Maybe because the previous owner played it once and never again :(
That horrible talk box-voice thing does my head in though. Hated it on that Peter Frampton song, and hate it here.

So here we are again and first up this great blues album from one of the finest guitarists of the genre and certainly the greatest to hail from Texas. The opening track sets the scene on this 10th studio album and sadly the last as he was to die only two years later. Listening to this album clearly shows he was no sideman ! Great feeling and explosive riffs from his Fender Telecaster accompanied by fine vocals from the man himself and aided by some great blues muscians including Johnny B. Garden on Bass, Soko Richardson on Drums, Debbie Davies on Rythm Guitar and Eddie Harsch on Keyboards.

Next we go to one of my all time favourite rock bands and whether its the early 70's band created from the ashes of the Santana Abraxas band or the later hugely successful 80's incarnation, they epitomise American AOR. A friend recommended this to me, he picked up a copy in a vintage shop. I was aware of her but had not knowingly listened to her releases, I probably did on the radio when I was young. I believe she was quite popular in the 60's, she has a rather lovely voice and interprets songs well, this compilation is a good mix of songs, some with simple accompaniment and others with band/orchestra. Well worth a listen IMHO.

My research suggests the name is Spider Cunts rather than Cunt Spiders, and they are on Spotify with their solitary 2007 album - Stuck Up -N- Mean. Listening to a few snapshots of their tracks, I suggest you dodged a bullet there Barry - theyre total gash! (Phnarr, phnarr!)

I bought that Melanie C album when it cam out (and the Madge one) - "I Turn to You" is a great track.
Daughter is currently baking a cake so she has put her Spotify playlist on the kitchen speakers - usual teenage girl stuff like Taylor Swift, Raye, Lana Del Ray but then suddenly The Smiths - apparently she loves them! I'll have to let her play my vinyl albums, or maybe that's how she discovered them?

Don't chuck it away Mart, I wouldn't mind having the booklet out of it. Mine has all the pages stuck together, like a well-thumbed copy of Hustler. Disc looks to be ok though.

My efforts to retrieve my copy of this from my mate hit a brick wall - he just doesn't have it. I can only think that when his son moved out the CD moved out with him. Still, my "Mothership" CD ain't so bad.

There was a time when every charity shop I visited had a least one copy of 'Northern Star'.
Now it seems that 'Northern Star' has been replaced by Jack Johnson's 'In Between Dreams' in the charity shops; which is where I purchased my copy - and very good it is too, prompting me to buy more of his stuff. From charity shops of course!

Whilst stopping in transit at Dubai airport, to kill time I looked at what CDs were available (and how cheap/expensive they were). I was amused to see the cover of Roger Water's 'The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking' had a crude sticker printed across the bottom of the girl on the cover. :doh:

They used to own Chorley's only hifi shop until they retired about 15 years ago. Selling Quad, Technics, Mission, Castle, Monitor Audio etc. "Abraxas" was an album that got played in the shop quite a lot.

Hi Barry, in one word different, songs are forceful, poetic in parts, supporting music can be atmospheric.
The notes on the back cover say in part "The Invisible Light is a song cycle concerned with the reality that we have been the subjects of over a century of electronic programming. It is trance music. It is folk music and electronic music. It is tribal and global.......... ", it goes on to talk about how we as individuals have lost our individuality and through social force(propaganda/media/advertising etc), and the inability to discern fact from fiction. So i would say it is and attempt to observe us and the state of humanity at this point in time and the damage we are doing to ourselves, each other and the planet, without any real understanding and certainly no control.

Yes his spin is interesting if nothing else, but he makes one or two good points and references along the way.
Unfortunately the dreaded mobile phone disease is not limited to only the young. A couple who are best friends, he is 64 and she is 67 are virtually married to their phones, and just about each other. I have and they know about it a rule of no phones at the table for any meals. But she in particular has an inability to not do so, she even used to try and hide it on her lap under the table, and got quite testy when I asked her what she was doing. She basically justifies it with she has to have in case her kids have a problem ( they range image from 30 to 37)[emoji2957] It is highly rude IMO and they even do it when you are out walking about with them, I just stop talking if they have a phone in their hands until they get embarrassed, which they did get upset about and said I was being silly[emoji848][emoji35]
Not sure you know but I worked for Apple for 10 years and at one morning discussion session on using mobile devices and so iL media I was asked my opinion, it went like this. They are wonderful devices that have lots of functionality to use that CAN be very helpful in everyday life, but they should be views as tools and used to betterment of the individual. With respect to social media it is generally pointless noise, but worse is often used to influence and manipulate others, and unfortunately can be extremely damaging, bullying, peer pressure, false information and so on. Also individuals think that by posting what they are doing in a positive way others will think better of them, and look for positive feedback, trouble is most real people really do not care what some else is doing only what they are doing. Life is to Experience personally and share with loved ones or people with similar interests, not the rest of the world who does not give two hoots, unless it can be used to sell or influence.
This created a rather shocked and silenced room, it was far from what any expected to hear, but hopefully made them think a bit.

Everyone should have a copy of 'Free bird' in their collection.
I have 4 versions , the original album, 12inch single, best of album and the Analogue Production version from the photo. Plus the memory of John Peel playing virtually every night in the mid 70’s, and more importantly seeing them live in Bournemouth in 1974 blowing Golden Earring off the stage and meeting band in the bar after their set.

Bought this today, I'm not a big listener to jazz but this is quite intriguing. Not brash but listenable.
Really good use of the stereo soundstage. Not something you often hear with modern recordings where everything seems to come from the middle.

If I'm not mistaken this is a repackaged CD of the 1962 album of the same title. Which might explain the great "stereo' sound as almost certainly the muscians were all playing at the same time in the same space a novel concept which regrettably fell by the wayside ! Of course these two are legendary in thier own right, Paul Desmond as a member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, who's biggest hit, "Take Five', still crops up in films and TV 65 years later. Gerry Mulligan came to prominence as a member of the Stan Kenton orchestra and became a significant arranger for Kenton, Miles Davis and Claude Thornhill amongst many others.

I bought "The Madcap Laughs" in the early 70s, after hearing Terrapin on a Harvest sampler album my mate had. I can't remember anything about the album now, which may say something about the record, or it could be saying something about me and why my memory is so crap ;)

After finding that a particular favourite song of mine, the theme song for "True Detective" season 1, was not done by T Bone Burnett, but rather a husband and wife outfit from New Mexico called The Handsome Family, I looked on Ebay for the CD. Price ranged from £21 for a used copy to £124 plus £21 postage for a new 'un from US. Definitely not happening.
Imagine my surprise when I found a copy at this morning's car boot for 40p :) Only downside is that it's Country music. But it's ok really, I've heard a lot worse. A bit like Nick Cave actually.

We went to a boot sale today, but couldn't be bothered to look at CDs. I did glance at some LPs, but at 25p each they wouldn't have been of much interest (anyway as I told the seller I have about 2,000 and my partner would kill me if I bought any more!).
My wife did a boot sale today, after pitch deduction she made the princely sum of £49 which was hardly worth getting up at 6am for! I walked to see her with the dog who was far too interested in meeting people and other doggies to let me browse for anything!
I have that Eagle-Eyed Cherry CD, Steve, bought when it first came out in 1998 - might give it a spin now actually, as not played in years. [emoji4]

The cover informs me "Soundscapes by Brian Eno", with contributions from Steve Gadd (drums) and Bill Frisell (guitar). Some highly-regarded names there, but I can't decide whether sticking them all together is a good thing or not. I like roast dinners and I like blackcurrant cheesecake, but not together on the same plate. And I suspect Eno is the cheesecake in this analogy. I dunno, maybe it'll grow on me.
Actually Paul may be the cheesecake - Years ago while we were watching Saturday night telly, a pissed-up bloke we'd never seen before stumbled into our living room, unlit fag in hand. I had to explain to him he'd got the wrong address while ushering him out of the house. Maybe Paul Simon similarly stumbled into the wrong recording studio, but decided to 'go for it' anyway :doh:
It may even be that buying too many CDs at once has left me jaded and over-critical, and really the album is excellent. I'll give it another go in a couple of weeks.

Yes it is, and virtually identical to another Vangelis CD I bought last year, though I didn't know this when I got it. It's not an unpleasant listen, and I do like the songs he did with yes's Jon Anderson. And "State of Independence" is pretty good too, though I prefer the version with the Donna Summer vocals.

I hadn't heard of them, but I have just listened to the LP and have to say that to me they sound like a pale imitation of the Yardbirds. Had I come across them at a younger age I might have bought the record, but with the wisdom of years I wouldn't give them a second glance now.

This being their debut:

OK, I hadn't realised 'Goodbye' was a stand-alone album. From the title it sounds as if might have been made to satisfy contractual obligations. I will have to track down a copy. :)
(As an aside, I have long tried to find out the lens fitted to the camera Clapton is wearing on the cover of 'Fresh Cream'. As a Leica enthusiast, it's been driving me crazy!)

I might have been too harsh. They are not bad, but not especially good either. From the scores of US bands around at the time, there were many far better bands: Blood Sweat and Tears; Moby Grape; Nirvana; Peanut Butter Conspiracy; Jefferson Airplane, etc.
I hope you can clean up the record and play it. If I had seen a copy in a boot sale, I could well have bought it 'on spec' if it going cheap.
