Surprised to find this in my collection as I loath Genesis and anything to do with them. I can only think I must have picked up the album cheap and only for the track 'Solsbury Hill' which I still like.

Loved it from the first Track Adrian!

Wasn't expecting the Chemical Brothers meets Pink Floyd, and that was just the first track.
Did a bit of digging on them and all I had to see was "Future Sound of London". I was in.

Loved them back in the day.

Top reccy Sir, thanks.

Been giving this one another spin whilst tweaking/optimising speaker setup, they are now sitting on the Hudson-HiFi speaker feet which improves separation and bass, and opens up the sound stage somewhat compared to using the standard spikes.

You're right, I could do I suppose. But I like to have physical copies, and vinyl if at all possible. But I cannot justify those costs. So I have done as Geoff suggests and ordered it on CD. Together with deluxe edition of The Orb's "Adventures Beyond The Ultraworld" (which will sound nothing like Melody Gardot) for a total cost of 17 quid. That's more like it. Would still prefer them on the black stuff though.

I was also looking at that Amorphous Androgynous album (the association with FSOL drew me in), but again vinyl prices are taking the piss :(

Having recently discovered The Amorphous Andronegous it has lead me to The Future Sounds of London(FSOL), I went for their most highly rated album and so far it is rather wonderful, very much a modern Tangerine Dream feel to me, which is a good thing. There are some rather lovely musical dreamscapes on this one, a very well produced/mixed, well worth a listen IMO and a rather lovely cover.

+1. This has been in my collection since early 90's and was for us a popular post-club chillout choice. As was the video of this (which I also had), used mind-blowing graphics, which today would look a bit Donkey Kong. Like Dire Straits' "Money for Nothing" vid.

Also worth checking out is their "ISDN" album. I often play this when Mrs. P goes out, as it sort of demands to be played loud. Good for rattling the windows :)

was unsure about this on first play, 6 or 7 plays later though, it's become a real earworm. a great recommend Adrian.

Getting used to the Hifi in the new lounge I thought I'd try this favourite out, and it seams to be doing the job rather well, when I get chance I will have to take some measurements with REW to compare with our previous homes lounge.

This Oldfield album is quite a favourite of mine, to say it pops from the speakers is an understatement, If you give it a go it will certainly give your drivers a run for the money in parts, some very big transients in places, it is very well mixed with great separation and large soundstage.

Very nice -"The Absence" should be landing on my doorstep tomorrow.

Following Adrian's post, I started today with FSOL's "Lifeforms" in its entirety. Wanted to follow it with "Dead Cities", but Mrs. P is up now, and she won't put up with that nonsense...

Charity Shop special, couple of quid for some great music.
Just cleaned this LP as a first test on the Moth RCM, dead quiet and sounding clear as a bell.
Great recording actually, who knew?

Well as most people know I will give anything a go once, and so to this another freebie form the attic. It is strangely beguiling and for some odd reason has my toe tapping along.

Well I decided to look up Mr. Last on Wiki to see what is says "Last is reported to have sold an estimated 200 million albums worldwide in his lifetime (figures vary widely, for example British Hit Singles & Albums (2006) reports 100 million at that time), of which 80 million were sold by 1973 - and won numerous awards including 200 gold and 14 platinum discs in Germany, the International MIDEM Prize at MIDEM in 1969. His album This Is James Last remained a UK best-seller for 48 weeks, and his song "Games That Lovers Play" has been covered over a hundred times. Last undertook his final tour months before his death at age 86, upon discovering in September 2014 that an illness (the exact illness was never disclosed had worsened. His final UK performance was his 90th at London's Royal Albert Hall, more than any other performer except Eric Clapton." "Asked if he minded being labelled the "King of Corn", Last reportedly replied "No, because it is true.""

Obviously a very successful career that captured peoples ears for many years.

Another free compilation, I was a bit dubious about this one but it is actually very good quality, even thought they are cover versions of the originals the recordings and productions are extremely well done. A reviewer on Discogs says "The production of these earlier volumes in the series were very good. Tina Charles does a great vocal on Ruby Tuesday sounding remarkably like Melanie and she also appears on the Witch. Both great covers. Most of the other tracks are also well recorded."

Friends came for the day on Saturday and very kindly he gave me his records that had been sitting in record cases in his loft for the past 30 years, 49 LP's and about 100 singles from the 70's and 80's, all seem to be in at least VG+ condition. There is a good mix some I already have but hoping they may be better condition that some I already have. I sat and ultrasonically cleaned the albums on Sunday afternoon.

This one is a better copy and is better than the 180gm re-release IMO.

Yes I am very please with them, Sandi, Jon's wife gave me her 70+ records about 2 years ago, and he gave me his when he got to them clearing their loft out getting ready to move. We checked if any interesting ones were 1st issue and valuable, but not the case, even the limited edition Elton John "Yellow Brick Road" is only worth around £20 if you can sell it. They were quite happy for me to benefit form them keeping what I wanted and then trade on the rest to buy other. As you say a very kind gift from some lovely friends, we are godparents to a couple of their children.

Re-issues do tend to be a bit hit and miss, newly released records do not seem to suffer in the same way so much, although I have a couple which seem to suffer from the sound wars mixing a bit. Generally I think early originals seem better, as long as you get one near the beginning of a pressing run, which can be a lottery, I replaced Genesis ...and Then There Were Three, 3 times until I got a good one resorting to a CA pressing which only had 10K copies done, chalk and cheese compared to the crappy UK ones.

I have just done some quick analysis of my record database, yes I know very anorak.

£0 cost given to me, 299 records
£1 and under , 426 records £401.18 average cost £0.94 charity or 2nd hand shop purchases
under £5, 307 records £949.39 average cost £3.09 mainly charity or 2nd hand shop purchases
£10 and under, 319 records £2030.15 average cost £6.36 mostly 2nd hand
£20 and under, 142 records £2345.04 average cost £16.51 90% new
over £20, 69 records, £2378.98, average cost £34.48 a few boxed sets, some specialist and HQ re-releases, and a few rather expensive difficult to find ones.

Average cost per record £5.19, it is quite a lot of money added up but not too bad over nearly 7 years. I view it as my monthly pocket money. Nowadays my record purchasing has slowed down and is becoming more selective and I look for a new listening experience if possible.

I suppose I could have purchased less and upgraded one or two hifi components but I don't really see the point, I doubt I would gain much sound quality improvement unless I spent £20K or more, and then I doubt it would be a huge leap. I am quite lucky my system seems quite well match and sound good to my ears anyway. I am thinking of supplementing my system with a sub-woofer for sub £500 to just get those deep lows below 50hz some oomph, but I am not sure about that!

About half the records I have recently been given I already have so I will be selling some at some point, they all have been carefully cleaned and I will asses them with a listen first. There is probably about 200-300 that I should trade on as I am unlikely to listen to them again, unless on a whim, so I would get some cash or exchange value form them and get others instead. Once lockdown eases a bit more and the house is in better shape I think I will be taking a few days out to go to my favourite record shop in Bridport.

I think your collection must be quite big as well, as you rarely seem to repeat play records?:)

Wow, that's some detail to have, but I guess if you've put the collection together over the last 7 years then you would have done this. Mine goes back so far I can't remember where half of it came from, I remember first going to a record shop and buying Kate Bush, The Kick inside and The Flying Lizards when I was about 14 or 15, which I still have. I've been lucky from then not to have lost many along the way and I bought quite lot from boot fairs in the early 90's when everyone was chucking them out and moving to CD's.

I've not got round to counting, I'd estimate 800 to 1000 Lp's, although I have loads of CD's as well. I'll often repeat play a rediscovered gem or new purchase, but like when I remember having posted one recently, I tend not to put them up repeatedly.

It'll be interesting to see what you find as you continue to go through your recent acquisitions :)

This is the only one I have, I think the later stuff got a bit contrived, I like this (my wife doesn't), it's not like queen, but if you like early queen you'll probably like this, the way they blend rock and orchestration. The Bruce is quietly pleasant, both on soptify if you want a listen.

I love Phil Collins, superb song writer and musician.

I think the problem is the media - they love to make people targets of hate, they've always done it. Musicians, actors, and now those dim-witted buffoons that go on Big Brother Island or whatever the heck the crap is called.

That girl who killed herself last year is a prime example. The press hounded her until she topped herself, and then they all turned around and said crappy lies like "We miss our angel" and "taken too soon" etc etc.

it's just plain weird!

So after doing a bit outside on the house this morning I am back in the listening seat going through the gifted records from my friend. I am so pleased this beauty is one of my favourite Genesis albums, I saw them perform live at Southampton Gaumont in October 1973, they played some of Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound a stunning concert.

This copy is excellent.

Once a year I play Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys and Astral Weeks by Van Morrison (I probably didn't need to name the artists).
They regularly appear in the Greatest Of All Time album lists and it's always frustrated me that I didn't get anything out of either of them.

To be clear, I've never found a classical music piece that's really moved me, but I can absolutely understand why some will claim Mozart or Beethoven etc to be genius and I wouldn't argue the brilliance of numerous artisits that I wouldn't actually enjoy listening to myself, but these two albums ? Worse than "meh".

Last night though, I dug out Astral Weeks and it BLEW ME AWAY ! I've had it in twice since and I'm loving it.

I've upgraded the hifi considerably in the last few months with the savings lockdown's enforced, but I can't believe that an improved sound quality would make a "bad" album sound "good".

How did this happen ? What did I miss ? Some songs or albums are definitely growers, but I've been trying with these two for over twenty years.

Wierd.

ps, Pet Sounds still stinks. No disrespect........

We all have tastes in music which may change with time, even to the extent of doing a volte face. For years I loathed soul music, or anything on the Tamala Motown label (as well as most of the non-jazz catalogue on Atlantic). Then about fifteen years ago, I suddenly realised what I was missing, fell in love with the music I had previously loathed and expanded my music collection.

Likewise I couldn't get on with Neil Young's whiney, and feeble voice - but again, one day I changed my mind and went out and bought most of his (pre-grunge) output.

'Pet Sounds' by the Beach Boys is a concept album - on the adolescent uncertainties and doubts we all feel when growing up. It is a classic album, and inspired and influenced the Beatles in the making of 'Sgt Pepper'. I certainly wouldn't say it "stinks", but if you don't like the sound of the vocal harmonisation, I can perhaps understand.

Goodness - they are not worth that much!

When the CBS catalogue was bought up by Sony, as a celebration Sony issued several titles on a gold disc CD. There were a couple of Robert Johnson titles as well as the Carol King.

But the specialist pressing of some recordings can fetch silly prices. Just look at the Nimbus pressing of titles such as Miles Davis's 'Kind of Blue' and Joan Armatrading's first LP, which were offered by a couple of Hi Fi magazines.

This arrived today which I had pre-ordered. I have not heard it since at my friends in 1974/5 and I had forgotten just what a stunning album it is, a mix of Psychedelic rock as was the penchant in '67, with some very interesting quirky songs, form the band, and it has The Who's stamp all over it, you can also get the feel for the direction they were going with Pete Townsends compositions especially on Real.

If you like The Who then I would recommend you grab a copy of this while you can. The pressing SQ on my copy is superb on both LPs.
