Rainbow "Rising" Rough Mix
I usually find that I prefer the first version of something that I hear, I guess it's what you're used to. Having lived with the original for decades though, I'm finding the rough mix easier on the ear. Less bright than the original, bass higher in the mix and without that swishy effect on cymbals that's in the original of "Stargazer". Plus the novelty of a few differences to freshen it up.

Motorhead Glastonbury BBC4
Just watched this again. Poor sound (suddenly fills out during "Rock It") and the highlight editing is astonishingly ill judged - the broadcast set began with "Stay Clean" and ended with Mikkey Dee's drum solo (?!) rather than "We Are Motorhead" and "Overkill" respectively, as apparently took place. "Ace Of Spades" didn't get broadcast either. On the other hand "Overkill" has had a couple of airings on 6Music this morning and sounds fresh. Bit disappointed with the BBCs editing.

Its an interesting comparison to be honest its a good recording and yes its better on vinyl then CD. Like Oasis WTSMG its much better on the black stuff as its also due to the loudness wars era...

I have this on cd and a 180g vinyl copy on Sony/CBS. This particular vinyl release is quite dire. It sounds almost mono in places and nothing like the 'Q sound' from its cd counterpart. It is being released again later this month on both cd and vinyl. The Lp(s) are available on the Columbia label (picture disc) and Analogue Productions (black vinyl). I'd love an original copy, but they go for silly money. I've pre-orderd the AP version in the hope that it will be much improved on the copy I have at the moment.

Fruupp: The Prince Of Heaven's Eyes
Very nostalgic blast from the past, as I used to hear this so much on Radio Caroline/Mi Amigo/Nord Zee International/whatever that particular month

Now that's a record Doug. I bought the SACD version a while back and although it sounds very good indeed I'm of the feeling that it sounds a bit too bright. What do you think?

I think the CD I have is just the English pressing; it's not a great recording, but I wouldn't call it bright. If I had a few bucks to spare, I would try to find a Japanese import. But that's based on my memory of the Japanese vinyl pressing.

I think the 'brightness' came after the Nick Davis remastering. There were many positives from the remastering, the guitar parts came forward as did the drums. And it generally sounded much clearer and upfront. I suppose having grown up with it and always hearing it in a certain way, it was something like losing an old friend. The vinyl reissues a year or so ago are readily available in the U.S for not too much cash. I've not heard them but they get good press.
