This is the only one I have, not familiar with ‘ happy Trails’ (other than for the cover art), looks like they’ve done a fair bit more so some research required….

Tbh Robin they were one of the many bands of that era that went unnoticed by me. I since heard good things about them so I thought I'd give them a go. And this MFSL pressing was going at a reasonable price (less than 30 quid). I've no way of knowing how much better this will sound, but it is pretty good. Only thing is the values have shot up so much that I'm reluctant to give it much play - maybe I should get a CD copy...

So, on to this now, given to me by my bff Macca :)

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71tQjCHKS5L._AC_SX425_.jpg

Another band that flew under my radar originally, but between playing this album and also streaming their stuff via Amazon music I'm becoming more familiar. I might even go see them live later this month if I can persuade Anita - I'm not going on me bill.

Ubiquitous in the 70s, but I never felt the urge to have my own copy. Then a few years ago I saw it going for pennies at a record fair... I like it more now than I did back then.

My copy is a UK first pressing, although I only picked it up a few months ago but is near mint.

I also have Argos which I’ve had since my teens and has seen better days, must pick a new copy, a great live band saw them in Glasgow in the early 70’s.

I handle all my records the same way, with care, for music is a bit like whisky to be enjoyed and shared with friends.

It's fine, one or two pops, but you'd expect much worse when house sharing with poxy students :) Just noticed - if you take the top of the 'd' off, Argus is an anagram of drugs :) Otherwise it just says drgus.

As someone who was a keen fan of The Nice (don't ask me why, but it was probably because of Keith Emerson's flirtation with classical music) and still has all of their LPs, surprisingly the first ELP album is the only one I possess. Given Emerson's interest in Classical music, maybe I should give 'Pictures at an Exhibition' a go.

(Did you know at one time Jimi Hendrix was going to be part of the band - in which case they would have been called HELP!)

Friend of mine bought two copies the day it came out and left one in the porch for me when I came home from work. She didn't have to work as she was an heiress but that also meant she didn't ask me for the money for it either.

We waited years for it to come out and we'd occasionally chat about it and then when it did it was a bit of a disappointment. But I still occasionally give it a go in case it clicks for me:

I'm a bit stuck with GNR actually. I have 'Appetite' original pressing with the banned cover but don't have it on CD and been struggling to find an original one.

I don't remember if I have 'Lies' on vinyl, don't have the CD of that either. I don't recall it being that good.

'Use Your Illusion' I and II are fantastic, play them quite a bit. Both on CD.

'The Spaghetti Incident' is worth having even if it is just covers, they're pretty good covers IMO.

You know, I also have 'The Spaghetti Incident' just for completion, and am ashamed to say I have not even played it. I think Chinese Democracy suggested to me they'd had their day in the sun. My vinyl copy of Appetite for Destruction is also the early banned cover but no CD version. I have come across it before though, so next time I see it I'll get it for you. Because I'm a nice person :)

Haven't visited this in a while, but I was in the neighbourhood, so...

Yeah, I read about that - apparently speculation by the music press. Might have been interesting though, hearing Emerson and Jimi trying to outdo each other  During the formation of the band, Mitch Mitchell was approached for the drumming job, which obviously never came to anything. Maybe that's where the Jimi rumours started.

Great covers album; I also have all of the other albums except for Chinese Democracy and the reason for that was, it wasn't the original GnR, it took forever to come out (something like about 10-15 yrs after the originals split). If you like GnR, the Velvet Revolver (3 ex GnR members Matt, Slash and Duff) first album is an absolute killer album !!!!

Yes, I think so. More in a Mind Bomb way than an Infected way but with the same on point, incisive lyrics. Very well recorded and great dynamics. My only slight grumble is that 2 or 3 of the tracks start off well and then morph into slightly softer, over produced (Trevor Horn style) songs, which doesn't really suit Matt Johnson vibe.

Worth owning though, imo.

I never really took to Mind Bomb like I did with the two that came before it, and I don't think I've played it in three decades. If I get chance tomorrow I'll dust it off and give it another go. Regardless, his new album is on my Christmas list.

Great choice Dom, I'll be playing this one (Nursery Cryme) in the morning :) But seeing it here reminds me I still haven't got round to acquiring a copy of 'Foxtrot' Maybe this Christmas.

"Return of the Giant Hogweed" is quite apt - a few have sprung up on the central reservation of the M61 near Bolton. Surrounded by cones and tape just in case anyone was tempted to park up on the hard shoulder and cross three live lanes to get to them, but needed their location to be more visible

When we were kids we used to shoot out their stems with our air guns till they toppled, unaware of how dodgy they were.

Talking of Japan (A favourite band of mine) Japan - 1978 - Obscure Alternatives. I love ALL Japan's output of music, I particularly like all the earlier stuff upto Gentlemen Take Polaroids; Tin Drum was a radical change in direction but is still a great album in fact, each Japan album is a work of art as they are all so very different from eachother in their style. My favourite is possibly Quiet Life but, as I said, THEY ARE ALL FANTASTIC ALBUMS!!

So we start the morning with the thunderous kick drum of Glen Power on the opening track, “We Cry” from their 2008 self titled debut album.

The album saw the release of five singles and album sales of 5 x Platinum in their home country of Ireland whilst selling 4 x Platinum in the UK and topping the album charts in both countries.

Next up another band driven by the incredible song writing talents of Paul Heaton. This 1996 six time Platinum compilation is testament to his incredibly diverse lyrics and ability to tell a story whilst you are carried along by the catchy chorus ! I have tickets to see Paul Heaton in December at the Co-Op Arena Manchester, a artist who is happy for his tickets to be sold at face value and not inflated by so called “Dynamic” ticket pricing !

So this morning starts with one of two compilations I have of this somewhat forgotten British/Irish son of diplomat who was born in Argentina to Colonel Charles John Davison, a British diplomat, and Maeve Emily (née de Burgh).

He signed his first contract with A&M Records in 1974, and supported Supertramp on their Crime of the Century tour, building himself a small fan base. However, commercial success in the UK and USA was to elude him despite considerably Central European and South America success. That was to change with the release of Best Moves in 1981 a collection culled from his early albums. It set the stage for 1982's Rupert Hine produced The Getaway, which reached number 30 in the UK charts and number 43 in the US, thanks to the single "Don't Pay the Ferryman". However, chart success didn’t really happen until the release of the ballad "The Lady in Red" in late 1986; the song became a number one hit in the UK (number three in America) and a worldwide success, its accompanying album, Into the Light, reached number two in the UK (number 25 in the U.S.). That Christmas season, a re-release of de Burgh's 1976 Christmas song "A Spaceman Came Travelling" became a Top 40 hit in the UK and remains a radio play favourite every Christmas.

He has released a total of 23 studio albums, 4 live albums and 9 compilation albums plus 65 singles and has over the course of five decades, achieved worldwide album sales in excess of 45 million, performed approaching 4,000 concerts globally and, perhaps more remarkably than anything else, continued to make his music, his way for his loyal followers.

Next up an artist who continues to evolve and has a career spanning six decades, starting in the late seventies with the band The Jam and still continues with his 2024 solo album 66. He has released 17 solo studio albums plus 6 studio albums with both the Jam and The Style Council.

This is his third solo album from 1995 and considered by many to be his finest solo work and has sold 4 x Platinum just in the UK.

Lastly we go to vinyl and this original release from 1980 and their seventh studio album. I saw them live in 1982 on the Blackout tour at the Manchester Apollo when they did two consecutive nights which was rare back then with bands preferring to do a show in the town down the road rather than multiple nights !

I appeciate why but it would drive me mad.

I used to very carefully remove all the hype stickers from my LPs, it was only a few years ago that I discovered that collectors want them left on .

I was basically peeling off money and binning it.

I don't give a toss about what collectors like or don't like. The only collector I'm concerned about is me.

Collectors have a fetishism over things that simply don't matter: spelling errors on some sleeve notes; vinyl that is coloured other than black; inserts, etc. They would be tumescent over a Charlie Byrd record I have - the record labels are on the wrong side: what should be side A has the centre label for side B, and vice versa!

By the same token, I'm not going to keep stickers on the sleeves of the records in my collection simply because it might affect the resale value of the record.

I buy records to listen to. If at some time I tire of the record and no longer want to keep it, I give it to a charity shop, I'm not interested in selling it.

I didn't buy mine to sell either but if it came to the point where I had to then I've devalued some of them by removing the stickers.

Don't anticipate being in that situation but you never know. I could have lived with the stickers.

Discogs describe it as "experimental", which although vague is probably a good description.

Genre: Electronic, Rock, Pop, Folk, World, & Country
Style: Experimental, Highlife, African, Jazzdance, Pop Rock, Indie Rock, Psychedelic Rock

So went on Ebay and found a 'NM' copy with a starting bid of 3 quid plus postage, and nobody bidding on it. And so that's what I got it for :) And it really is like new, which makes a nice change.

Probably mine too right now. Though like with "Meddle" I tend only to play one side.

And so from probable favourite to possibly least favourite:

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/71sjUdulWiL._AC_SX425_.jpg

It's not bad imo, but I do have to be in the mood for it. And I do find post-Waters Floyd to all be a bit meh (Momentary lapse of Reason and The Division Bell). But what bugs me about this album is that at 53 mins it's probably too long to go on one record without compromising sq, so it went onto 2 discs, with all the sides having huge run-outs and making me have to get off my arse too frequently. I'm sure they could have found another 20 minutes of material down the back of the sofa, and would then still have fitted comfortably onto a CD.

If I can find a CD copy going cheap enough, maybe that'll be the way to go.

I didn’t know of him until 2 or 3 days ago. I watched his last interview on the David Letterman show, which was posted on AA and was impressed / saddened with the man, so had to look into him.

Pleased I did.

Wasn't "Werewolves of London" one of his?

I saw them at Glastonbury in '93 as part of that tour. I think some of the tracks on that album were from that. Excellent stuff.

Tends to get overlooked in a canon of superb albums, but it really is genius and no-one else ever sounded the same before or since:

Inclined to agree. It took me a very long time to "get into" the Dan, before it was a 'love hate' thing, but now having obtained most of their albums, I definitely love them.

I recall you saying years back now that you didn't get what was so special about them.

I got into them in 1991 during a very tough time in my life and I'm sure they helped me through, although no idea how, so there's some additional attachment for me there.

When I went to see them at Aintree years ago I paid for front row centre seat and access to the 'executive lounge.' After the show there was a charity raffle for the executive ticket holders, £5 a go, winner gets to meet the band.

I bought a ticket but didn't win. Not sure if I would have coped if I had. Would certainly be a Wayne's World 'We're not worthy' moment.

They are my only heroes.

Three excellent albums there Steve.

Saw her in London years ago. She performed 'Last chance Texaco', which is possibly my favourite song of hers, so I can now die a happy man!

Brilliant song, might be my favourite too. She was featured in a series "Women Who Rock" (recommended) which is currently on Sky Arts.

So I am starting my day with the only other album I have:

https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/512evxklF0L._AC_.jpg

I heard somewhere that her later output is rather more 'experimental' and not as good, but it's time I judged that for myself - I'm sure the worst of Rickie Lee Jones would knock spots off the "best of" many other artists.

Flying Cowboys is good. I have most of her output, and would agree her later works could be considered to be critically inferior, but I don't care.

Well I’m taking us down a very different path to Gong this morning!

This great vocalist is almost certainly my favourite Irish singer, hailing from Dublin and born into a musical family. Her father was a fiddler, who came from Rathlin Island off the coast of northern Ireland, and her mother was a singer. Her brothers Shay and Michael have their own musical group called the Black Brothers and her younger sister Frances would go on to achieve great success as a singer in the 90s. Her son Danny is a member of the Irish rock band The Coronas, while her daughter Róisín is performing under the name Róisín O.

She has released thirteen studio albums and nine compilation albums spanning five decades many with platinum sales, she has been performing for six decades. I have seen her many times and she never fails to stir your emotions !

No, it was released in 2000. I have a few of her recordings, she can do no wrong imo. Although her eponymous debut is the one I go to the most.
