Second listen in a few days, forgotten how good this one was, not to everyones liking but some well constructed Prog. rock. Based on Autobiography of a Yogi (1946) by Paramahansa Yogananda that describes four bodies of Hindu texts, collectively named the shastras. Wakeman left the group after the live tour of as he did not like aspect of the musical direction the band was going, although he has said that there were some beautiful melodies in it and moments if greatness. The album was a commercial success, becoming the first UK album to qualify for gold certification based on pre-orders alone. It topped the UK Album Chart for two weeks and reached number 6 in the US for 500,000 copies sold. It has been re-issued at least twice.
If you have never heard it give it a go, each side is quite different, reflecting the Shastra. IMO opinion it may take 2 or 3 listens to gel.

Yes are a band which somehow passed us by, but I will give this one a go later. Monday is the night that Mrs. Pony goes to the weighbridge at Slimming World, and I use those evenings to "go loud" :)
I think vinyl is essential for stuff like this, especially when it uses Roger Dean's fabulous artwork.

Some more classic Prog. One of my favourites, I heard for the first time live when Genesis performed at the Southampton Gaumont when I was 16, spectacular and they performed Foxtrot in its entirety. Those were the days!

Seems a bit tight, having gigs at a deaf institute. Reminds me of a fireworks display I went to years ago, put on by an RNIB care home in Preston.
Just given "Pain and Misery a listen - very soulful, I like that a lot. Apologies if this sounds racist, but they do not look the way they sound!

The more I hear it, the more it becomes a Tears For Fears album in some ways. Roland Orzabal is a very distinctive producer.

Love: Forever Changes 2012 Rhino 45th Anniversary remaster.
Picked up a still Sealed copy on Sunday. This is awesome, a superb repress, inky black silence between tracks and I swear I'm hearings things I hadn't noticed before. I'll have to do a comparison with my original 1st sometime.

I came across this album by accident as the first track is on the Dali 3 CD (comes free with speakers), this is a good CD by the way worth buying on discogs.
As a result I hunted the album down and it is stunning. A mix of classical Chinese and modern orchestra and jazz, really worth a listen, it is on Tidal. Search for "Sounds of China" and then look for the album cover

Ooh this is rather cool, playing is so laid back you feel they could fall over (in a good way). The feel and control is wonderful, very expensive stuff. Blues, Jazz, funk soul into one, with the odd surprise.

This is a really interesting listen. At times it sounds like Beatles and then early Pink Floyd, and Syd Barrett, and because of the driving bass from Claypool comes across quite dark at times. Definitely a step into psychedelic sound, rather well done. I think this will be played quite a bit by me.

Jennah Bell is an extraordinary talent IMHO.
She is an elegant and eclectic songwriter and musician. As adept as a solo acoustic artist as she is with a full band and production.

Strauss - Also Sprach Zarathustra all you need is first 2 minutes, lots of double bass and organ low bass, ensure you find the Zubin Mehta with NY Philharmonic recording as recordings of this work vary greatly and this is a good one
Both the Eva Cassidy’s are pure original recordings and will test your systems setup, her voice should be smooth with minimal sibilants.
Paul Simon and Peter Gabriel for dynamics, attack and rhythmic feel.
Sinead O’Connor listen to separation and clarity of strings and her voice should be clear with nice airyness.

This has become the first test song we usually put on. Scoff if you will at Toto's album, "Toto IV," but this track's dense mix truly spans the audio spectrum. This is usually the quickest test we've found for judging the accuracy of an audio product's tonal balance—the relative level of bass to midrange to treble. Just 30 seconds of "Rosanna" will tell you whether a product is on the good or bad side of things.
We used to use Steely Dan's "Aja" for this purpose, and this track is still a good choice.

We purchased Cole's album, "Temptation," when it was first released back in 1995. Ever since then, "Train Song" has been one of the first three test tracks played when we evaluate an audio system. This song starts with some intensely deep bass notes, which can easily push lesser speakers and subwoofers towards distorting the lows.
The tinkly percussion that dances across the front of the soundstage is a great test of high-frequency performance and stereo imaging. If your tweeter can cleanly and clearly reproduce the super high-pitched chime, struck right after Cole sings the line, "…never, never, never ring a bell," then you've got a good one. Be sure to go with the studio recording over the live version.
World Saxophone Quartet, "The Holy Men"

"Metamorphosis" is a great album by the World Saxophone Quartet, and "The Holy Men" is one of the best test tracks for stereo imaging and midrange detail that we know of. Each of the group's four saxophones—all four of which play nonstop through the entire tune—is positioned at a certain place within the stereo soundstage.
You'll want to be able to pick out each saxophone individually and point to it (yes, in the air). If you can do that, then you've got a fantastic system. If not, don't worry too much, because this particular listening test is pretty hard!

If you want one of the best bass tests in existence, go for Olive's "Extra Virgin." We often use the song "Falling" when testing for the best subwoofer placement. The synthesizer bass line is powerful and punchy, dropping way down to a deep note, one that tends to nearly disappear when played over mini speakers or bad headphones.
Know that this is a harsh-sounding recording if you're listening to the mids and treble. So it might be worth making a custom version with the treble rolled off -6 dB at 20 kHz.
Saint-Saëns’ Symphony No. 3, 'Organ Symphony' album cover
This may be the best deep-bass test ever. We don't mean the booming, headache-inducing hip-hop or heavy rock brand of bass. We're talking about the subtle, beautiful bass emitted by a massive pipe organ, with its deepest notes reaching way down to 16 Hz. This recording from Boston Audio Society's album "Test CD-1" is not to be played without caution.
Be aware that the low tones are in this track are so intense that they can easily destroy small woofers!
You'll want to enjoy it through some monster subs, such as the SVS PB13-Ultra or the Hsu Research VTF-15H. This track is absolutely spectacular and something that any self-respecting audiophile or audio enthusiast should appreciate and own.

There's no better way we've found to test stereo and envelopment than this cut by Indian percussionist Gurtu, with saxophonist Jan Garbarek. When listening to "Once I Wished a Tree Upside Down" off the album, "Living Magic," pay attention to the chocalho shaker chimes.
If your speakers are top-notch, the sounds of chimes will seem to swirl around and even materialize right in front of you, almost as if Gurtu were standing between you and the speakers—and this isn't hyperbole! Put on a pair of the best electrostatic or planar magnetic headphones, and you can hear exactly what we're talking about.

From the Kamakahis' album "Ohana," this is a gentle and lovely recording of slack key guitar and ukulele behind two rich male voices. Those who listen to this song through lesser sound systems may not be so impressed. If this is true, it can mean there's a problem with your speaker's upper-bass reproduction, or that your subwoofer's crossover point is inappropriate, and/or the positioning of your speakers and subwoofer needs adjustment.
Reverend Dennis's voice is especially deep, which can sound bloated on most systems. This recording—the detuned strings of the slack-key guitar in particular—should sound amazing. If it doesn't, then you've got some work to do to improve your system's audio performance.

My better half went to the shops in Exeter and on her way between some she popped into a Hospiscare shop to look for records for me, and without me asking, what a lovely lady she is. She then rang me and said "Would you like a Dusty Springfield, it does not look bad, although no inner sleeve and may have a bit of sticky stuff from an old inner sleeve on it, but your good at cleaning them, also there is a Bread one that looks good as well". so she returned with them and only a £1 each. The Dusty has cleaned up very well and is pretty good with very little surface noise, so I am rather pleased. I think I need to think of a nice surprise for Sue.

I heard some of this at Renaissance HiFi a few months ago when visiting, Sean put it on and said "Have a listen to this, I think you will find it interesting". I was immediately taken by its dynamics and the beauty of the music and singing, even though I don't speak or understand Hindi, it is a mix of traditional and modern Indian music, and some has a Jazz feel. It has some extremely deep speaker pushing bass from drums and other instruments, and is very rhythmic.
I spent a while hunting it down on LP, and it is not an easy find, in fact I resorted to ordering it form a chap in Mumbai, Faiz was very helpful, it was well packaged and arrived in 5 days, and not too costly courier. If you are interested PM me I will send you his details.
This recording and transfer to 180gm vinyl is done by Sony and it is truly stunning, the dynamics and presence is some of the best I have heard, and a very quiet record. I have only listened to one side so far and I know it is one of those albums that will be listened to often and used for test listenings. Worth every penny 2,999.00 Rupees.

I usually play a few tunes on the bedroom system as a precursor to the land of nod (at quite low volume) but on this occasion my listening session was curtailed. My mint condition 1991 Pioneer receiver seems to have lost a channel. I went off to get a substitute amp & started plumbing it in then realised it was, by now, 3:30am & perhaps it would be a good idea to go to bed :(
