World Machine is my favourite. I bet they're great live. Back in the early 80's, before they were big, Radio 1 used to do a simulcast with BBC 2 of live performances, and Level 42 were one of them. I played that tape to death. I wonder if that series of performances ever made it to physical formats? Probably not, which is a shame.
I've found out that their were live recordings done but not ones that you are referring to. It was in 2005 – The River Sessions (Recorded live at the Locarno Ballroom, Glasgow, 18/09/83 by Radio Clyde).
Also, 2013 – Live from Metropolis Studio (Recorded live in West London's Metropolis Studio 10/12/11)
As for live, yes they were really good when I saw them in the 80's; what they're like now, I don't know - I'll let you know after I've seen them. If you want to see them, there are tickets still available for upcoming gigs around the UK. :eyebrows:

The date for the Glasgow gig is about right, so probably the same tour. IIRC the set was similar to what I have on this:

Not a bad CD by the way. :)

TWO OF THE QUO ALBUMS THAT I DO LIKE AND HAVEN'T PLAYED FOR A LONG TIME
I ALWAYS LIKED THEIR HEAVIER 70's ALBUMS ! AS THEY PROGRESSED INTO THE 80's I FELT THEY WERE LIGHTER AND FAR MORE COMMERCIAL!!

It's not that Loz, I don't have a problem with vinyl, but I've long harboured the feeling that picture discs and coloured vinyl tend to sound 'wrong'. At least that is what I've found with the few I own.
I also have "We Too Are One", "Revenge", "Touch", "Be Yourself Tonight" and "Savage" on normal black vinyl (all fine iirc), and "Peace" on CD which is excellent.
But I'll put "Sweet Dreams" on my CD wish list. Not heard it in years.

Charity shops up here are all crap, never have anything worth buying. I get all my £1 or less bargains at car boots. And if it's something in particular I want, Music Magpie (via Ebay) is a good place.

If LPs are not black vinyl, I won't touch them. 'Vinyl' (polyvinyl chloride) is transparent. The addition of carbon black makes it black (obviously!) and thus easy to cue tracks, and the carbon also greatly helps reduce problems with static.
Sales of CDs at boot sales are becoming more expensive - typically £1/ or occasionally 50p/, and they are often in poor condition. Whereas most charity shops now only charge 50p/, and as is becoming increasingly common: 4 x CD for £1, or 25p/. They are also in much better condition.
The charity shops in some of the more 'cosmopolitan' parts of London stock the most amazing variety of CDs. At 25p or 50p, one can afford to gamble and be introduced to acts and music that is new to you. Only rarely have I picked up a CD that didn't like.
Returning to LPs, boot sales are largely useless - the choice is poor, usually 'best ofs' and easy listening, and the condition of both the record and the sleeve is often poor. There are of course the traders, who armed with their Record Buyers Guide, sell their wares for high prices; largely irrespecive of condition. The best however are those record sellers who get their stock from house clearances - they sell LPs for much more reasonable prices, and the condition is always good.

I only discovered them a few years ago, on recommendation from my nephew. This is probably my favourite of theirs, although I rather like Fear Inoculum. Lateralus musically is quite a varied and and even some individual tracks shift around musically, I cannot remember which two tracks but there is distinct overtones of and early Black Sabbath sound and feel, certainly the guitar and bass.

At car boots there are still individuals who maybe going over to streaming or have digitised their collections, and there you have a fair chance of picking up something decent.
Traders at car boot sales I always walk past - easy to spot as they tend not to sell anything else, and their wares look like they've been out in all weathers.
What is your opinion of record fairs? We plan to go to one this Saturday, there's one in Manchester and one in Windermere. We will decide which one on the day - if the weather's nice the Lake District will be gridlock and best avoided.
I haven't been to a record fair for years. The last one was in Chelmsford, probably about 25 years ago. I think I picked up one or two LPs, in good nick and for a reasonable price.
I think one of the record emporiums here hold a monthly Record Day bash, but they usually promote LP titles specially chosen for the occasion, and are attended by 'vinyl groupies' - I can't be bothered: vinyl is not that important to me.
But if you haven't been to one, you might find them interesting - and you might find something you have been after for a good while. I would imagine that record fairs now also sell CDs.
Good luck. :)

I find charity shops now are becoming more businesslike and are starting to become dear (especially The British Heart Foundation shops and their eBay store) also, record fairs are really quite pricey and personally, I don't bother with record fairs anymore. I agree, you probably have more chance of finding the album of your choice but, you'll find you pay the dealer kind of price. I think boot sales are OK and I agree you can usually spot the dealers by the fact they don't sell anything else (except CD's and other music related stuff).
eBays prices have become stupid (probably due to the greedy fees they have imposed on sellers who then have to try and cover them). You can get the odd bargain on there though (I've bought a couple of CD's off Music Magpie through eBay and they've been at an excellent price).
(Stating the obvious) If you can find someone on a boot sale just selling their old albums etc., just use your discretion, have a good view of the item you're interested in and if it looks good, start having a barter over price - it'll usually be a lot cheaper than dealers/traders kind of price!!! I guess that's what most people do - patience is the name of the game!!
Agreed, The British Heart Foundation are expensive, as are some Oxfam shops. Obviously charity shops have to make the best of their donations; the pricing largely depends on the local manager. Some are more 'savvy' than others in using the internet to assess prices, whereas others (such as my local Oxfam) will automatically charge £15 for any Decca SXL, regardless of title or condition.
Farleigh Hospice charity shops have a four CDs for £1 offer, but it is often difficult to find four CD titles you actually want.

I know what you mean, but I still like the early 70's stuff, it gets more commercial and poppy up to this one, 75 I think, any later is just toot.
Hmm, picked this up at a charity shop recently, unknown/random purchase based on some of the tracks covered. Non-vocal, (so far, haven't done side 2 yet) would do for a 70's cocktail party....

Looks interesting Grant. :)
she relearned to play guitar in her 60's while working for the seegers' as a maid. eventually being recorded by son pete. She actually wrote 'Freight Train' but it had been nicked by another artist. Seeger managed to get her name back on it.
She was quite a decent player, as was Rosetta Tharpe
Yes, I have heard of (Sister) Rosetta Tharpe, but not of Elizabeth Cotton.
Good to know she was eventually acknowledged for 'Freight Train'; hopefully she got some royalties.

A CHANGE OF STYLE TONIGHT - NOT A MASSIVE FAN OF REGGAE BUT DONT MIND A BIT OF EDDY GRANT. GREATEST HITS ALBUM, WELL WORTH A LISTEN :):)
Agree - originally I couldn't stand reggae, but I've mellowed with age, so now I love the likes of Bob Marley and The Wailers.
I too have a greatest hits CD by Eddie Grant, which contains almost all of the tracks on yours:

2 Romancing The Stone
3 Boys In The Street
4 California Style
5 Walking On Sunshine
6 Can't Get Enough Of You
7 I Don't Wanna Dance
8 Baby Come Back
9 War Party
10 Electric Avenue
11 Do You Feel My Love
12 My Turn To Love You
13 Hello Africa
14 'Till I Can't Take Love No More
My CD is:

Bit of research shows it to be rare(ish) 3rd press, as the one in this pic. But mine is in much better shape. Mrs. P telling me I should sell it, but I just can't do it.

Good grief Barry, my head hurts! I thought I'd done well pinning it down to being a third press. The info I know of on my copy I have highlighted, I'll have to look again to check the other details.
I have no plans to sell it anyway, it's just seeing all those tatty examples at the record fair that piqued my interest. I think i need only Sgt, Peppers and Revolver to complete my vinyl (have those on CD). And only the first five albums are original sixties ones, all the others recent reissues.
I would never have any interest in paying silly money for something just because someone had printed "Made in Clacton" on the label in 8pt. Helvetica instead of 9/10pt Univers or some similar nonsense  but I suppose some people are, and they're out there.

What's not to like about Carly? :)
Nothing, especially with her first album, where she makes a couple of very good points :)
Haha - you really need to look at the matrix number pressed between the locked runout groove and the label, to find out exactly which version you have.
When you have done that - you can sell it to me: I'll give you £3.50 (including postage) for it! ;)

The cover of her first LP looks like this:

But to be honest, IMO Carly Simon looks sexy on all of the cover artwork.

Not familiar with that one, but I do like William Orbit. He knows how to fill your room with bass. Check out 'Spirit' by Caroline Lavelle, you'll see what I mean :)

Us-&-Them - Way to go! I love The Cure!
I've listened to this probably 300+ times over the past 30 years on various versions of my system in different rooms. NOT ONCE have I ever felt like I got physically transported to the actual recording venue where this unplugged concert took place... Until tonight!
My current system, and the recent integration of these GIK Acoustics panels in this room, played at near life-like volume levels as if being in the audience, I sat here the entire time with my eyes closed and a giant smile on my face. That is, when my jaw wasn't on the floor instead!
Wow!!

Another Birthday album and strangely enough this one I also find rather odd musically and in production terms. Without meaning to offend Ed Sheeran fans, and he has done some very good songs, but the way some of the songs on this album are presented for me comes across as just bland and over produced, and very pop driven. His technique and song construction seem to get lost on quite a lot of them, "The Joker and The Queen" is a classic though with beautiful lyrics and meaning and well presented. Once again I will have to have a few more listens to this album I think, I might be being ver critical.

It seems most young folk these days listen whilst on the move, through earbuds/'phones, and I wonder if much of the music targeting them is produced accordingly.
There are a few Ed Sheeran CDs knocking about here, though they never get played. Anita's son (who is a fan) always listens on his phone, thankfully out of earshot :ner: Has he done an album yet called "Minus"? If not, he should, I might listen to that :)

You could well have a point there Piggurs. The "young folk" do listen to much of their music via smartphones, maybe using headphones (at best) or ear buds (at worse), so it is not surprising if the production and mixdown is done with that in mind. After all, the early '60s Beatles and Rolling Stones LPs were originally mono, as the intended market was for those that would play the LPs on a Dansette record player.

He has done +, X, '/. (divide) and =. Strictly speaking Division is subtraction in an abstract mathematical way of thinking, as addition is really a higher level way of expressing multiplication in certain ways.
A nice little conundrum to represent this is to work out how to get the total of all the numbers from 1 to 100(inclusive) without explicitly adding them up ie 1+2+3+ and so on, there is a simple answer which will give you the answer in seconds if you think about it.
Divide the range of 1 to 100 into two lots of 50 numbers. Then add:
1 + 100 =101
2 + 99 = 101
3 + 98 = 101
.
.
.
50 + 51 = 101.
There are 50 'pairs', so the total is 50 x 101 = 5050.
The story goes that when Gauss was a schoolboy, his teacher set the class the same problem, hoping to keep them quiet for a good while whilst she got on with some marking. Sadly, for the teacher, Gauss came up with the answer in a matter of minutes, by applying a bit of lateral thinking. It was a sign of what the great mathematician would achieve in later life.

There was once a bloke who was invited to appear on The Jeremy Kyle Show. During the break he went to use the toilet facilities (or bogs as he called it). On the way back he got lost and found himself on the set for "Countdown". I know exactly how he felt now...
Anyway, onto something a bit less cerebral. Just landed an hour ago:

I absolutely totally agree with you!!!! A band (yes, a band that can play instruments, not just 4 people prancing around on a stage feeling their own crotches) as good, talented and as big as Coldplay just simply dont need to lower themselves to try and target a younger audience by doing songs featuring todays' 'pop' 'stars' - what's the point??? Coldplay are relevant as they are; they have a massive following (young and old) already?????
This album is, imho, by far, the worst album that Coldplay have done. I have all their albums and e.p.'s and I simply find Music Of The Spheres boring!!!
BEST ALBUM BY COLDPLAY (IMHO) IS X&Y !!! (According to the recent documentary on Sky, Coldplay reckoned that it was the album that they struggled with the most !!! Amazingly, I find it to be one of the best!!!!!

Maybe a bit much for early morning, but "Mixed Up" is a great album with lots of low end oomph. Back about 15 to 25 years ago when I had a big powerful systems in my cars, I had an Audio Control Epicenter. For those that don't know, the Epicenter digitally recreates the bass an octave lower. You can select the center frequency and the Q and the unit does the rest. Then you get to play with the remote knob so you can add in as much low end as you want. It was originally created to help recreate bass on cassettes back in the 80's when head units didn't have the great frequency response.
Long story short, my friends and I all had similar systems in our cars and when we would go out to the clubs, we would blast this album (and many other albums for that matter) and ramp up that Epicenter until our eyeballs would vibrate and blur our vision! LOL Ahh, the good ole' days. It's amazing that my hearing is still in great shape after all of that and the clubbing.

Nice.
The frequency with which they played "Sweet Dreams" when it came out had me all but dismiss Lennox as a singer.
However, her solo records had me sitting up and taking notice. She has since become one of my favorites. Fabulous singer, IMHO. (I may have to back track and give the Eurythmics a chance.)
I hope they do a vinyl run of this one at some point.

Just ordered a copy of this, £2,20 including postage from Music Magpie. Can't grumble about that. Though I note that there is indeed no vinyl of it. Strange.
If you don't already have "Peace" by Eurythmics, I would recommend it to you. If you like her solo stuff I think you'll like this. Contains the song "I Saved the World Today", which might just be my favourite of all their songs.

Used to have this in the early nineties, it was pretty good. One third of Bananarama iirc, can't remember who the other bird was.

Two good choices there Dom. Your Al Stewart album cover is in much better shape than mine. Is it a reissue? If so, how does it compare to the original?
The Raven has been on my radar for some time, but decent examples are quite pricey, especially if you want the 'hologram' sleeve.

Both original, Raven I've had since I was a lad, not sure where Al came from, perhaps part of my sister in law's collection that came my way about 20 years ago. The covers have survived better than some of mine it has to be said ...
