That's the woman whose mum you used to work with isn't it - what's it like?
Production is a bit ropey in places but the songs are strong and I do reckon she's possibly the best female rock vocalist ever.
There's a new album coming out sometime this year, it was recorded in Canada. Supposed to have made a better fist of it this time.
I looked her up after you mentioned her in your speaker review - pretty good (though I couldn't find the "Acoustic" album you referenced.)

It's certainly a bit of a curiosity but I do think it is worth having, mainly because it has some decent mixes of tracks but also because it is an interesting sort of audio insight into JD

The Dire Straits albums were Britannia staples along with 'The Sound Of Bread', 'Tubular Bells' and 'Oxygene'.

I used to be in the Britannia Music Club in the 80s. Each month they'd have a 'record of the month', which if you didn't say "no thanks" promptly enough they just sent it to you. I never got round to it, so I'd end up with them. And I was too lazy to return them. A fair bit of Phil Collins and Eurythmics iirc.

Bryan Adams too. Think I still have the cassette release of 'Waking Up The Neighbours' somewhere.
Britannia was fatal for us lazy bastards. I suppose that's what they relied on to offset all those energetic folk who got their freebies then cancelled and opened another account and got them again.

Yes, I am the same, several albums I ended up with and never got round to sending back. At least thats what I tell anyone who takes the piss out of my Five Star albums
Not quite the same thing but similar, I had to resign from a book club because if you didn't order a book of your own choice each month, the book club's "book of the month" would be automatically sent to you. You could return it at your own cost and choose another title, but it was the sheer palaver that caused me to reluctantly resign my membership.
Shame really, as they would have a lot of interesting titles to choose from. They went out of business a couple of years later.

Five Star had at least one good tune, can't think what it was now though.

I was in a military book club for a while, they had a lot of interesting titles but if you ordered them they were always out of stock and they'd send you something not interesting instead. Which you could have picked up for a lot less money at any remaindered/discount book place which were everywhere back then.
Decided it was a scam, or possibly a scamola, so I quit.

Compilation albums are often frowned upon by purists, but I like them as they often include only the best of an artist's output. Not so in this case, I have all their early work on LP (up to and including 'Exile on Main Street'), but played this CD for up to 40 minutes of uninterrupted Stones, whilst cooking tonight's dinner.

I bet you had a lorra lorra laffs telling her that her daughter's voice was like fingernails on a blackboard. Though I like that song, surprise surprise.
her daughter's voice was like fingernails on a blackboard. .
It was though, wasn't it?
I was about six and in those days children were seen and not heard. You just had to wait quietly until they finished their chit chat. I did notice that my mother and nan treated her with unusual deference, it was only later I found out who she was.

Love it! It also made me think what would I like to have played at my funeral (the sad thing is I have not done anything about my funeral plans - I really ought to do something about it!)
Two of my best friends who "went before" had Lynyrd Skynyrd's 'Freebird' played, and a colleague at work had R.E.M's 'Everybody Hurts' played at his.
But I wouldn't want anyone to be sad, so maybe something by Ian Dury to make them smile.

Very possibly! Great album, spinning it now, I had forgotten about it! (I am sure I am not the only one who suddenly has an epiphany on an album they once played to death, but got lost in the mists of time? The perils of having access to so much great music!)

Well I know you like "Caffeine" and this is similar. As you probably know, the title track is a cover of Leonard Cohen's song, which will come as no surprise, given their collaborations.

There's some of it I could live without, but enough to make it worth me having. I honestly couldn't say whether it's Jeff Beck or Jan Hammer that makes it what it is, and I don't have any other recordings by either of them. They seem to be an unlikely combination, but for me it does work.

That's often the way. In fact I think anyone who has a record collection of 200 or more LPs would do well in investing in an RCM. However I can never understand the high price manufacturers charge for them.
I think there is a DIY RCM described in The Knowledge, for those handy with a few tools.

Yeah I did "buy" an RCM via that Kickstarter scheme a couple of years ago. They took my money then vanished :( I borrowed Macca's once and got to clean about 30, so only about 470 to go. Maybe he'll loan it me again if I say pretty please :)
I have a very Heath Robinson RCM which I purchased from this forum a few years back. It uses plastic plumbing pipes and connectors. I think it works very well but have never used another vacuum RCM so am only comparing with a Knosti spin clean. I believe they were made by a guy in Brazil. It's the same one as used in this video. You need to use your own vacuum cleaner which slots in.

Lots of people have borrowed my RCM over the years, except my mate down the road who brought about dozen albums round, said 'Clean these for me mate' and left.
You can always borrow it again anytime.
I think it cost me £400 but it was well worth the money. Made a lot of records sound like new again.
Wood glue also works but is more expensive if you do a lot of records, and I don't think is quite as effective. If you have just one or two really bad ones it's worth doing it. Doesn't harm the record at all and does lift a lot of the crud out.

 Wood glue? My first thought was to check it's not April 1st! How do you use it? I might just try it out on a manky record (an unplayable copy of "Astral Weeks" that someone gave me should be ideal). PVA (Polyvinyl Alcohol) is widely used in the building trade (I usually have some knocking about) and is what wood glue consists of. It's about 15 quid or so for 5kg of the stuff, which would probably go a long way.
But I think I'd go down the cleaning fluid route. I used some stuff Firebottle gave me (I think it was called "The Right One"), which seemed to work well. I might start a thread elsewhere about it, unless I spot one already here, asking for recommendations.

Put record on flat surface, cover the whole surface of the record in the PVA. Except for the label obviously. Then cut a rectangle of card or stiff paper about an inch long and set it in the glue on the edge so half is in the glue and half is sticking out over the edge. Let it dry. Once dry take hold of the tab of paper and pull, and the whole thing comes off like a skin (that's the best bit).
Then turn record over and do the other side. It does work, I cleaned half a dozen that way. Just takes time and if you're doing a few at once you need a bit of space to lay them all out to dry.
Martin and Barry might just remember this thread from 15 years ago - (gulp) - quite a few interesting(!) options got tried - but I still never did buy a record cleaning machine!

Yes, try it out on an old record first. And secondly I would buy some new, fresh PVA, not something that has been knocking about in the back of a cupboard for years. It's not expensive.

LOL, I had forgotten about that thread. These days I tend to play CDs, but my records are sufficiently clean that all that is needed is a couple of spins with a Decca carbon fibre record brush.

Most of "mine", ie ones that I bought new are in good shape, it's the ones I bought used from car boots, Ebay, that are sometimes a bit manky. Generally they are free from scratches, so can look near mint, but sound anything but.
Getting them all in tip top condition isn't going to be cheap, as apart from the cost of the fluid, it's recommended that they also get new inner sleeves. I might just concentrate on the basket cases, most of my records are fine.

Well that last one was just perfect for a Sunday morning, so thought I'd give this a go. Not bad, but the arrangements are a bit old-fashioned for my tastes. Sounds a bit like Tony Bennett did this in the same sessions as his collaboration with Amy Winehouse (Body & Soul, from her Lioness album).

Released 2005. It's ok, as are all the others I have (4 on CD, 2 vinyl). But imo her eponymous debut stands head and shoulders above the others.

Thanks Steve - but I'm embarrassed to say that I have just looked under 'Chapman' in my CD collection and there it is.
I once started a thread called "Can one have too much music?". It prompted quite a few replies to the effect that 'No, one can't have too much'. Well I have just demonstrated that you can have too many CDs, to the point that you dont know what you have got.
Anyway I'll play it now to remind myself. :)

This review by John Black, published in Hi Fi News and Record Review at the time, is interesting:
"Depending entirely on your point of view, Tracy Chapman is either a deeply depressing do-gooder or a courageous champion of the underdogs. Whatever your take, there's no way to deny that she has a unique voice, a curious trembling tone which suggests fragility but somehow conveys reserve of quiet strength.
Her seventh album demands to be heard in its entirety (if at all), because the same intense mood is sustained throughout, with only a couple of tracks delivered at much more than a snail's pace. For those who can take this sort of emotional turmoil, the jazzy, almost Gershwin-like 'Don't Dwell' is one of the loveliest melodies Chapman has come up with, and the closing 'Be And Be Not Afraid' offers an empowering philosophy for those who feel downtrodden.
Performance 4/5, Recording 4/5 "
I used to admire JB's reviews, but I don't know what to make of the above. Discuss.

Tbh, I never try to analyse the finer points of a performance nor where the artist's head may be at - The vocals and arrangements either 'connect' with me or they don't. And I've never been much for lyrics either.
Also, I do think it's perfectly possible to have too much music - I always considered the best work to be the stuff that doesn't immediately impress, but may need repeated listens, but with all this music around me I just don't have the time! Back in the day when I only had 50 or so albums, I knew them all back to front and inside out, and enjoyed them all.
I don't know quite how it happened, but I have approximately 150 Chillout CDs by "Various Artists". Cafe Del mar up to volume 16 (plus the 20th, 25th & 30th Anniversary collections), Cafe Mambo Series, Saint Germain En Laye Cafe, The Art of Chill, etc., etc., etc... Among them are roughly 20 "Ministry of Sound" compilations, and somehow I managed to acquire this one, which is an Australian/New Zealand release, from 2004:

It is one of my favourite compilations. Disc 1 is more "chill" opening with an absolutely brilliant remix of Missy Higgins "Nightminds" by Dave Higgins - I have no idea if they are related, but his remix of one of my favourite Missy tracks is epic. There are too many good tracks on this release to name check them all, but suffice to say if you are a chill/smooth house fan, I would strongly recommend picking up a copy. Surprisingly, there is one available in the UK for £13.49 delivered. (No, it's not me plugging my own sale! )
That's a lot of "chill"! I have few soothing, 'ambient' discs in my collection. Not quite lift music, but something to stick on when I'm, say, cooking and unable to give the music my full attention.
At least you haven't got 150 "Now That's What I Call Crap (Oops, sorry - I mean Music)" discs.

Actually there are "just" 119 Now albums, with number 120 out next month. Though that doesn't include all the variants (Now Christmas, Now 70s, etc). Before you all gang up on me, it's Anita who collects them, and her friend buys and sends her each new release. In her defence, Anita never plays them, she just got caught up in some kind of collectormania. She's still missing about ten.
All CDs, apart from maybe the first dozen or so which she has on vinyl. And she says I have a problem!
I agree they're crap, but especially the last 20 years' worth which are so bad you'd have to leave the room.
She has plenty of duplicates if you're interested Barry :)

https://i.discogs.com/9AEj8PiHpVlTvp5SGUwCaijNRBQbGD_dQM8q5zSSEoA/rs:fit/g:sm/q:90/h:600/w:598/czM6Ly9kaXNjb2dz/LWRhdGFiYXNlLWlt/YWdlcy9SLTE5MzI3/OTMtMTU4MzA2MDE1/NC0zMjg2LmpwZWc.jpeg

(No, it's not me plugging my own sale! )
I still have a few "dance" compilations, though nothing like that bad! I used to like the early "Renaissance" releases, still have a few. This one I used to play to death post-club.

I have about the first 20 on vinyl, mainly because at the time I was doing a lot of mobile DJing and they were good to have with lots of hits suitable for weddings etc. I am sure I have some on CD too, probably, but they never get played on either format. The Christmas one on vinyl is probably unplayable any way, as it was used again and again at Christmas gigs. Those were fun times.

Cheapo second hand blind punt - but I had heard of them.
I have got a bit of that sort of thing, got some Thievery Corporation albums too. Rare, but sometimes I am in the mood for a bit of ambient.

I've not heard an original UK pressing Barry, so I don't know. A touch more dynamic, with vocals more forward in the mix than the UK pressing I had.

Judging by the cover it ought to be '70s style, what with the Eames chair, the glass top coffee table, and not least the Transcriptors turntable (arranged so as to make record cuing difficult!).

Morcheeba are a downtempo/"chillout" band, Barry, I would definitely recommend them, especially the early albums such as this one. Not so sure on the 70's influences other than the album cover, but I must admit it's a great image.

No, the photo isn't reversed, the other way round would be unplayable. The deck has been rotated clockwise by 90 degree for some reason. The album was released in 1998, a time when vinyl wasn't doing well, and the room for the photo shoot will have been laid out by a youngster who'd only ever seen a turntable being used by a DJ while off his face.
Tash Sultana is a recent new discovery for me, and very enjoyable music.
From Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tash_Sultana
"Sultana plays a large variety of instruments including guitar, keyboard, bass, percussion, beatmaking/sampling, trumpet, saxophone, flute, mandolin, oud, harmonica, panpipes; and arranges it into loop style performances along with percussive and finger tapping style guitar playing. Sultana has a vocal range stretching five octaves."
I don't really know how to describe their sound, but I think I'm hooked!
This is the 2nd album, from 2021:

I do have all of their studio albums (apart from "Yellow Submarine", does that one count?), but this and "Revolver" are CD. I sometimes think I should get these last two on vinyl, but really these CDs are perfectly good. On the other hand I think Sgt Pepper to be one of the greatest albums ever made and really I should get it on vinyl. Which just leaves Revolver, and I can't let that be the odd one out, so...
I'm curious about that last statement - so who made it then?

Sgt Pepper and his Lonely Hearts Club Band of course. ;)
After their last tour in the US, where the screaming adulation of the audience drowned out what the Beatles were playing, they returned to England vowing never to perform live again. Thereafter they would only work in the studio which allowed them, with the help of George Martin, to manipulate sounds and acoustic effects which would not be able to be performed live. The whole album is supposed to be the result of the fictional Sgt. Pepper and his Lonely Hearts Club band.

Don't be put off by the rather 'twee cover (one of Neon Parks poorer efforts), it is IMO a rather good psychedelic rock album, largely dominated but not exclusively, by David LaFlamme's electric violin. The tracks are quite varied in their pace and style: from gentle and poetic vocal, through screeching rock, to atmospheric soundscape.
Probably best summed up by a posting on Discogs: Great dose of focused dreamy hippie vibed San Francisco quasi-psych-prog-jazz-rock with edgy male-female vocal harmonies supplemented by David Laflamme's excellent violin performances.

Judging by the artists listed, that looks to be an interesting tribute album.

4 LP's and 3 CD's. Played and recorded well, it's a corker.

Sorry, I seem to have missed linking this to Idlewithnodrive's earlier post
Pixies burned bright around the late 80s/early 90s, then just sort of went away. (Note they liked to be called Pixies, not The Pixies, I'm sure you will have known that) .I have some of their early albums up to Bossanova, and I saw them live when they were touring that album (one of the best live acts I've ever seen). All I've heard that is relatively recent is their superb and rather dark cover of "Que Sera Sera".
So what's this like, and when was it recorded?
Thought I might like to go to the show

Ive also been a Pixies fan from the beginning and, yes, I did know that. Recorded 2004 and still as potent as ever, if not more so. Very well recorded , all the right songs, with variations of each across the 4 nights and a total, ridiculous, stone cold bargain !

Steamhammer Mountains
Came across this bands 1st album in a local charity shop, who were asking silly money for it, it reminded me of them and this album, which I am more familiar with. I found a new copy from Repertoire Records on Discogs at a sensible price. Repertoire IMO do an excellent job re-releasing albums, this copy is superb and it is a classic album of raw blues/rock, sounds like they are in the room, if blues/rock is your bag then it is one I would thoroughly recommend to get.

Always loved the Steamhammers tho Mountains is perhaps my least loved and have the repertoire CD's of all of them. Just wanted to add that if you like the feel of their first 2 albums then this might be a must have:-

Yep and it's worth 10 times that, musically.

Nice. I really need to get myself a copy, but it has to have the proper cover, like yours.

I discovered the Chromatics, some years ago, recall really liking them, then completely forgot about them until I stumbled upon them again somehow.
