Bought this morning, and just finished side one. Tbh it just sort of washed over me, though the pop signalling the end of the side got my attention. But a lot of folk seem to like it, so I will persevere.

Without a doubt the best of Hendrix performing live, IMO, is this:

And it was FREE (ignoring of course the cost of the paper. ;) )

Agreed. In fact I'm going to start off with one of my Police albums today, as soon as it's all warmed up. I saw Stewart Copeland in interview along with the rest of the band, and he came across as a bit of a tool. But what a drummer :)

Staying in the 80s, with this (again). I need my 'fixx' of last song side 2 "Outside", which is just extraordinary. Never get bored of it.

Went from this to The Fixx's "Reach The Beach". The Fixx were often compared to The Police back in the early 80s (though they sound nothing like them) The Police cast a long shadow, and record buying Brits voted with their cash. But the Yanks welcomed The Fixx with open arms, and the band are still going today (album due out October).

Last one for now. "Walkabout" can wait for another day - Anita is away until Friday, so I can play what I want, when I want.
This was never my favourite, and didn't get that much play, so why so crackly? It's a mystery. I need to get it through an RCM.

Absolutely without doubt, the best album by The Fixx - they've never done anything (IMHO) that has ever come close to Shuttered Room - its brilliant!!! One of my all time top 20 albums!!!!
Not come across the Fixx, I'll be looking them out for a listen

(IMHO) This is a great album from Judas Priest but, I know amongst the fans out there, its a bit divisive as some think its a bit too commercial/mainstream; I LOVE IT!!! :D

Taken as a whole, I'd be inclined to agree with Loz, that Shuttered Room is their best. But Reach the Beach closes with "Outside" which for me is their finest moment.
Of the three albums I played yesterday, it's the last track side 2 in each case that's a stormer. So seeking out "Outside", Red Skies at Night" and "Phantom Living" will do the trick :) Sod it, I'm going to play them again...

Prompted by another post, I though I would give it a spin. I have a problem with all of Steely Dan's output: essentially finding them to be superbly recorded but "easy listening AOR". The sort of thing you put on when you don't know what else to play, and you don't want to be challenged.
They all vary in the degree of anodyne listening, but Aja is to my mind not one of the better examples in that regard. Sorry.
Being a sucker for punishment, I continued with this:

Excellent choice Piggurs. It was the first of Zappa's many, many, many LPs that I bought, before discovering his back catalogue with the Mothers.
As it is largely musical (save the wonderful 'Willie the Pimp' by the sadly late Captain Beefheart), I can't understand why Mrs P. wouldn't like it.

The only time I played it in her presence she just sat there with her lips all pursed like a cat's arse. but it was "The Gumbo Variations" that really did it - she declared that she heard "enough of this shit" and left the room. I think she found the sax a bit relentless, but was too enraged for eloquence.
She's the same with Bjork.

I'm sort of with you on the Bjork thing - I've seen her live several times, going back to when she fronted the Sugarcubes. And each time I saw her I liked her less and less, only really going to provide company for my mate (because I was soft that way).
As for the CDs of hers that I have - I bought "Homogenic" because I liked the cover! Subsequent CDs were car boot jobs, bought purely to satisfy my completist tendencies. That's my excuse. I never play them when Mrs. P is in the house, I just threaten to if she doesn't behave. And I don't play them when she's not here either.

Thanks for looking out for me Dom, but I'm after a United Artists release, not a Fame or liberty reissue. And these days I only bother with one described as NM. Gives me the best chance of getting something playable. And a decent cond. sleeve is important too. I know, I'm hard work!
Anyway, I've just had winning bid on an album, and am currently bidding on another. Have to pace myself ;)

Barry - I'm quite new to Captain Beefheart - I had a couple of albums a mate put on cassette for me back in the 80s. Not sure what they were, but I think this was one, and also Trout Mask Replica.
I was playing "Safe As Milk" the other day, and the music felt like a better fit than when I bought it a few years ago. What would be your recommendation for next purchase? I trust your judgement.
Speaking of which, I've just had winning bid on "Texas Campfire Tapes", which I think was another recommendation of yours...

For some strange reason 'Trout Mask Replica' is lauded by the record press as being one of the most important records of the late '60s. I found it unlistenable - a cacophony, with no real structure. Yet some say that was how they initially perceived it, but on subsequent (fifth or sixth!) listening it 'clicked'. I'm afraid I can't be bothered to try.
(As an aside it is said that during recording, Beefheart insisted on wearing the new hat he had bought and refused to wear headphone. Thus he had no means of monitoring what the rest of the musicians were doing. No doubt it is apocryphal.)
'Clear Spot' is a deliberate attempt by Beefheart to record an LP more acceptable to listeners. Other titles I like are 'Mirror Man' and 'The Spotlight Kid'. I used to have a copy of 'Shiny Beast (Bat Chain Puller)', but didn't like it enough, so gave it away.

New to me, and I have to confess it one of the better '70s British prog rock offerings. Wasn't particularly impressed by the vocals, but the instrumention is very good. And the four bonus tracks make the LP better value.
Nice one - thanks Adrian.

I don't get round to commenting much, but if you haven't heard this Jeff Beck album, give it a listen. It's raw, gritty and well played, but bringing in some surprisingly 'modern' elements, even trip hop, drum & bass, but don't let that put you off, if you have a open mind give it a go...

To be fair Debut had 3 good tracks I think

I know what you mean I found a old copy in the 10p basement of the Music and Video Exchange in Notting Hill in the early 90s when vinyl was at its ebb. I think it's the only record I have literally thrown in the bin it was so shit.

Great live gig from early 80's demonstrating the power of one of my favourite bands!!! Its also available on old VHS tape (not many people can play those anymore) but luckily, you can watch it on You Tube (get the higher res version and the one that's complete and not split into sections - not that many of you will as I get the feeling that there aren't too many hard rock fans on here) !!

Understandable. I have a friend, fellow respected music aficionado, who still doesn't get on well with all things...Steely. She's trying at the behest of her father (a fan since the start). Not there yet; still trying to like Aja. Some bands/artists are polarizing. Mr. Fagen (with and without the "Dan") has a knack for that from album to album. I like it but I'm an unrepentant music whore. I haven't even binned my copy of Kay Huntington's LP and that record is HORRIFIC!!

GREAT SEMI PUNK/ROCK ALBUM FROM 1984 BY THE FALLEN ANGELS.
interesting selection there Barry. What's the Ray Davies one like?
Like a lot of my CDs, I picked 'Americana' up in a charity shop. I have always admired Ray Davies's lyrics and their quintessential 'Englishness'.
'Americana' is, to quote the blurb on the cover:
It started as flickering black and white images through an old movie projector. Faces of cowboys and Indians and other superheros of my childhood. The good guys victorious over the dark forces of evil. Then as I grew up, the music took over. Rock, jazz, skiffle, folk, blues and country songs came to liberate me a Londoner growing up in the austerity of post-war Britain. The music gave me the feeling that I could express myself with this new art form called rock and roll. Then, as I toured America with my band, I saw the place first-hand as we experienced the highs and lowsin our turbulent career. Those romanticised images of my childhood were replaced by the real world, as the flickering light of the fantasy turned into the cold light of day.
Americana is not so much about the country or even about the style of the music. It represents hope for a better future as the dream continues along the great highway.

Not everyone likes it: https://observer.com/2017/05/ray-davies-solo-album-americana-review/, but I find it pleasant enough; "pleasant" here being as damming a description as 'anodyne'. I certainly wouldn't pay full price for the CD.

I'm with your friend here - I have always had a love/hate relationship with Steely Dan. I admire the superb production of their recordings, but couldn't 'get' what they were about. To that end, I would buy their next LP, hoping to find out why everybody raved about the Dan. I now have all their LPs and am still no closer to finding out!
Apropos Dnald Fagen's solo career - I do like 'The Nightfly'.

A rather stunning re-release of one of my favourite albums for its 50th Anniversary. SQ is excellent as is the pressing, a 1/2 speed cut using Neummann VMS80 lathe, taken from 96kHz copy of the original master re-mixed by Steven Wilson. He must have taken time and care with this one, the detail and definition is quite stunning.

Momentary Lapse of Reason is notorious for having re-releases that are not great. I also have the 2017 re-issue and its a bit dull, if I recall correctly the original 1987 is cut down to fit, and is average SQ. This 45rpm is very good IMO and as it a favourite of mine I am very pleased with it.

Picked up that CD up in a charity shop. Couldn't get on with it, I found it too weird - so returned it.Does you charity shop take returns if albums are weird? That's quite a generous policy.

I have it on LP, one of the first few LPs I bought on its release.
That would be a nice thing to have.
I never had this one on vinyl, though I did buy "A Nice Pair" in the 70's, which comprised this and "A Saucerful of Secrets".
I wasn't expecting much from this CD (which only cost me £1), but the SQ is really good. Very clear and clean sounding, if a little limited dynamically.
I've not heard this for many years, but track 2 (Lucifer Sam) still makes me think of Spiderman

World Machine is my favourite. I bet they're great live. Back in the early 80's, before they were big, Radio 1 used to do a simulcast with BBC 2 of live performances, and Level 42 were one of them. I played that tape to death. I wonder if that series of performances ever made it to physical formats? Probably not, which is a shame.
