There is not much I do not like from The Who, a big favourites are Who's Next and Quadrophenia. I saw them at Wembley Arena(I think) when Who By Numbers was released, probably one of the best live concerts I have ever been to, superb from start to finish, excellent atmosphere and the band seemed to be really enjoying it.

'Live at Leeds' is IMO the the standout live Who LP. Other good Who albums are 'The Who Sell Out' and 'Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncey', but then pretty much all of the Who's output is good.

Had an opportunity to see the Wailers in the 80's...unfortunately shortly after Bob passed on.......but what a party. Don't think I left the dance floor the entire night.....with a constant passing of joints from person to person.

A stunningly wonderful album, I had forgotten how good XTC, I listened to them a lot in the 80's, and fabulous musicians. This re-release on 200gm is top notch IMO.

+1. Great band. I tried twice to see them live, both times they cancelled the gig. Then they announced they would no longer tour. I think Andy Partridge hated performing live, bordering on phobic. I have a few of their albums, but not that one.

Nowt wrong with a bit of T. Rex/Tyrannosaurus Rex. But Electric Warrior is my favourite.

When I was fifteen (and skint - that's my defence), I found a copy of "Beard of Stars" with no inner or outer sleeve in a junk shop for 20p. I didn't have 20p. so it went down the front of my already tight Loons. It turned out to be quite crackly.

I should also mention that I bought quite a few singles from that place, by the Stones and Mungo Jerry :)

ELP just rock!! If you want to know how your HiFi performs just purchase this one and listen to the dynamics on "The Endless Enigma (Part 1)", from a very subtle start into huge organ chords, thundering bass and drums, with masses of attack, and then a stunning piano section, supported by bass, gradually building into a refrain, listen for the delicate triangle before the thunder returns, leading into the finale introduced by the Tubular Bells.

By the Steve(Pigmy-Pony) if you have ordered a copy you're in for a treat:)

My favourite Talking Heads album - mine has a sticker stating "Direct metal Mastering". Don't know how beneficial this is, but it is a damn good recording...

I used to have a couple of his LPs, but never got into them, so got rid of the albums. But then I never rated Gong either and got rid of the couple of LPs I had of them.

That's the spirit! If you have something you can't get on with, move it on to a loving home... by the way are you still struggling to like your Steely Dan albums? In particular "Can't Buy a Thrill" and "Pretzel Logic" ;)

Excellent LP Steve. In fact they're all good with the possible exception, IMO, of "Even in the Quietest Moments".

I bought scores of LPs in the early to mid '80s, when they were being sold off cheaply (99p) in supermarkets, newsagents and even some corner shops. I bought a load of 'crap' (or rather material which didn't 'click' with me), so passed them on to jumble sales (this was before the rise of the now ubiquitous charity shops).

Apropos Steely Dan, I don't dislike them, nor do I want to rave about them. In my view they made some LPs with excellent production values. Elevator music it ain't, but in my attempt to try and find out just what it was that people liked about Steely Dan (apart from a schoolboy snigger at their name), I ended up buying all of their LPs - and I have still haven't found out.

I'm slowly going through my LP collection and am embarrassed to find I have duplications of several recordings (especially classical). These go the charity shops in return for CDs, which can, on occasion, be a duplication of something I have already - and so it goes around!

Should try to setup some sort of 'swap shop' on here, I'm sure most of us have a few duplicates or unwanted 'treasures' they'd be happy to exchange for someone else's old tat....

I know, I've seen your list :D

By the way Adrian, when you sent me that list I thought it might be a good idea to highlight in red all the ones I have, and send back to you. Took me a bloody age, then didn't work, then all my effort disappeared somewhere :( But we do have a lot of titles in common :)

Ha.....must have all been on the same wavelength. I was listening to Sabbath earlier........till mum asked for something different.......at which point I put on Janis Joplin.....and her comment was "since when were you into Country music?"

Now we are currently listening to Ella........quite enjoying it actually.

Apologies here...feel like I've confiscated the thread. We went into total lock down here today.....right to the point where nobody is allowed in your house unless you live there.....or unless your are taking care of a family member who lives alone. I'm in total agreement as the half assed approach is just prolonging things. Anyway, I'm in full record mode tonight.

One of my favourite albums.........and if you haven't seen the movie Harold and Maude..you should...it's odd but I loved it too. This would be the sound track to that movie (and there's a modified E-type Jag in there.......that I'd trade my children for LOL)

One of my favourites! It is in Robert Dimery's book '1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die'. The title track 'Next' was written by Jacques Brel, Mort Shuman, & Eric Blau, Alex Harvey had a knack for finding interesting songs and turning them to his style and rock music, as they did with 'Delilah'. Seeing them live in 1976 at Reading Rock festival was superb, their opening track "Action Strasse" was something else, Alex dressed up as Adolf, with dancing girls in sudo gestapo uniforms and lingerie, they certainly took their show to the limit. I seem to remember they played all of 'Tomorrow Belongs to Me' and all the best tracks from the other three previous albums.

I haven't heard that for years, its a goodie. I am sadly lacing any Feelgood vinyl in my collection.

When I lived in South London I and my best friend went the Half Moon in Putney one spring mid-week evening, I think if 1979, to see a band we had not heard of advertised as a blues rock band. To our astonishment onto the stage came Dr Feelgood, they were playing under a pseudonym warming up before going on tour. There was no more that 30-40 people in the audience. It was absolutely superb, they played a long set about 2 hours with a 20 minute break, and came into the audience to chat and have a beer, wonderful.

Started the day with some "M"s - George Michael "Older" (my go-to album for evaluating equipment changes), Roisin Murphy "Overpowered" and Marcus Miller "Tales" (which is ok but I find myself zoning out after a few minutes).

Trying stuff out to assess an amp I bought yesterday, but I don't know why I'm bothering - Mrs. P has had me put the speakers against the wall to make room for a Christmas bloody tree, so nothing is as it should be. And it'll stay like that for the next 3/4 weeks :( Bah humbug...

Another AMP?:scratch:What are you up to now Steve?:D

Oh I don't know Adrian, much as I like my Audion Silver Night 300b, I had come to the conclusion that although it is great with jazz and acoustic stuff, it seemed to get a bit messy when driven harder or given more complex work. A big chunk of my music collection was just not enjoyable. While my speakers are very sensitive, I think the impedance can drop quite low in places (just something I read somewhere).

So along comes an amp (Musical Fidelity A5) at a good price which gives 250W into 8ohms and 400W into 4ohms. Initial listening impressions are slightly deeper but well controlled bass, which hopefully will be even better when the Christmas tree buggers off back to the garden. A bit of the "air" I enjoyed with the Audion seems to have gone, but I won't know for sure till the speakers go back to their original positions.

They say a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, and my knowledge is very little :)

I have no plans to sell the Audion. The guy I bought the MF amp from, Neil (Enrae8) gave me a listening session on his Mastersound 845 into some Heco Direkt speakers, and the combination sounded wonderful to my ears. So definitely not turning my back on valves :)

Yes a good SS amp certainly can tame those bottom end demands. I often wonder if I did the right thing moving 6 years ago from the Meridian 557 to valves, a costly journey. The Allnic does well though. I saw the MF and was tempted but not in a position to do as you at the moment. Happy listening.

This is a wonderful album, IMO is probably one of his best. It is just an amazing album, it will make you Gato pop from bottoms to tops, huge dynamic range on this record, wonderfully mixed/recorded great guitar, bass, drum and keyboard definition!

Time for another Live album, from one of the first signs HM IMO, although quite blues based, ahead of their time. As live recordings go it is pretty good, Nantucket Sleighride is pretty extravagant an excuse for the band to let rip and jam.

If you have thought about trying out Atomic Rooster this is well worth a listen, a compilation released as a tribute to Vincent Crane shortly after his death by his wile and former bandmate John Du Cann. Alternatively their 2nd album "The Devil Walks Behind You" is a classic and luckily has been re-released in very high quality- MOVLP1907, originals fetch silly money.

Hi Steve, I was fortunate enough to see them at Olympia London 3rd January 1976, at the 'Great British Music Festival', On the bill was Charlie, Be Bop Deluxe, Pretty Things, Slim Chance, Nazareth and headlining was Bad Company. All were pretty good, although Ronnie Lane and Slim Chance did not go down that well, a bit too laid back. I seem to remember my hearing suffered for several days after, happy memories. :)

Brain Salad Surgery at is release was not well received by several critics, even so it reached 2 on the UK charts and 11 in USA, and was Gold(100K) in UK and USA(500K). It is probably the most varied of all of ELPs albums, with a mix of heavy rock, flowing jazz and pop songs. Some of the org rock tracks are quite dark and intense taking several listens to get. IMO a bit of a classic for album.

In 2005, Q Classic and Mojo magazines placed Brain Salad Surgery at number 5 on their "40 Cosmic Rock Albums", which was published in the special edition Pink Floyd & The Story of Prog Rock.[38] In 2015, it was ranked the 12th greatest progressive rock album of all time by Rolling Stone, whose reviewer Will Hermes characterised the record as "prescient and pretty damn rocking"

Manticore early UK pressing or possibly Very early USA press heavier vinyl but will be more money and possibly noisier background due to re-cycled vinyl at the time due to oil shortage wars.

Another i came across in the charity shop today, and its NM+/NM+. I know very little about Country Music, turns out Charlie Daniels is famous for "The Devil Went Down to Georgia", he was a multi-instrumentalist and played the violin on it. He is obviously a big CW star as Wiki quotes "He was inducted into the Cheyenne Frontier Days Hall of Fame in 2002, the Grand Ole Opry in 2008, the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum in 2009, and the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016" His musical associations included Beau Weevils • Marshall Tucker Band • Lynyrd Skynyrd • Bob Dylan • The Youngbloods • Leonard Cohen, so obviously a great musician.

I am always open to listen to listening to something new to me and I have to say that this is rather good, superb musicianship, punchy and crisp, the recording sounds like they just laid it down in the studio and that was it, I would describe it as Country Rock, with the occasional track having a more traditional C/W feel.

I remember buying that on release or thereabouts. They were always playing tracks on Radio Caroline.

Never heard of Roy Clark before I came across this in a charity shop, turns out he was a huge star in USA through the 60's and into the 90's, primarily a Country and Western performer and multi-instrumentalist, he also acted and was a comedian. He won quite a number of awards from Country Music Association (CMA) and others, he is recognised as having a huge influence on C&W music and popularising it. This record is a mix of him performing popular songs and doing so rather well, he only put 38 album and quite a few singles, many of both made the charts.

Cracking thread this. I think I have owned 90% of the aged Rock discs you guys are picking up.

If you ever go to London, have a pint in the Salisbury Pub in St. Martin's Lane before you catch the Train home. An homage.

The Stones used to drink there. Picture of Marianne Faithfull on the wall, looking wasted but lovely.

I surprised myself today. Picked up "My Fair Lady" the musical for a pound.

Kiri Te Kanawa and, of all people, Jeremy Irons. Oh Lor, Julie Andrews meets Brideshead Revisited. Can't wait!

My dear old mum's favourite record was "I could have danced all night". So I expect I'll be blubbing by the end.

How did "My Fair Lady" (A London Musical) on Decca turn out?

Bloody Rubbish, IMO.

Kiri Te, who is a good singer was severely miscast as the Cockney Flower-seller, she failed to convince me she was born within a mile of Bow Bells.

Jeremy Irons hardly attempted to sing. Surprise star of the Show was Warren Mitchell. A proper Cockney.

John Gielgud got a fairly minor and unconvincing Role.

The LSO turned in a decent performance.

Give me Rex Harrison and Julie Andrews any day.
