LOL, I've got LPs by the first 4 acts mentioned there, I'm an 80s kid, but wasn't into contemporary music back then, I backtracked on it during the 90s and since. Don't like the Cure though or any of that Goth crap. I do like some stuff on 4AD though like Dead can dance et al. The Specials? Yeh they were good, but wouldn't want to listen to them now. 'Ghost train' is one of the most memorable songs of my childhood, along with Bowies 'Ashes to ashes'.

The music of Genesis is pretty much at odds with everything else I listen to, but what can I say, we like what we like :) I'm guessing you like Peter Gabriel though, gotta like PG.

On the contrary it took me a long time to resolve a love-hate attitude to Steely Dan, in the end realised that I do like them to the extent of possessing a copy of all of their recordings. I based my assumption on your liking "World Music", and Peter Gabriel has long championed this via his "Real World" records label. I don't know which PG album you have, but my recommendation would be this one:

I really don't know whether you would like it Barry, but I'll seek out her best-known song from this album (Moorlough Shore a traditional Irish love song), which is pretty representative.

Caroline Lavelle is an English singer/songwriter and cellist, whose vocals and cello have been used for many over the years by artists as diverse as Peter Gabriel, Massive Attack, Undertones and Thomas Dolby. Maybe sounds a bit like Enya.

I would describe her as "Celtic New Age" (I don't know if that's a genre, but that's what comes to mind). This album was produced by musician/composer/producer William Orbit, whose best-known work is probably producing Madonna's "Ray of Light" album, and it shows. His production methods run through this like "Blackpool" in a stick of rock. He's done a fair bit of what I would describe as "electronic classical", he had a fairly big hit in the 90s with his take on Barber's Adagio for Strings, and did an album called "Pieces in a Modern Style" which I'll be putting on next.

Well I gave that William Orbit "Pieces in a Modern Style" another go, and I still don't like it.

It sounds like something you get when your insurance company puts you on hold ("We're experiencing an unusually large volume of calls, so here's some pretend classical cack to be going on with") :(

It got good reviews on the Amazon, so maybe it's just me. But I'm glad it only cost me a quid on t'car boot.

I first heard the album 15 years ago when auditioning some PMC DB1i speakers at Audio T in Manchester, which despite their dinky dimensions managed to reach the bass frequencies William Orbit was so fond of. I didn't buy the speakers, but went straight out and bought the album :)

As long as she can get through the album without resorting to autotune that'll make a nice change from the usual chart cack.

Before Christmas Anita's lad asked me what I'd like for Christmas, and I said "How about that album by Charli XCX?" Then a few days later I heard the album at a mates, and it was awful. I got back to Anita's lad saying don't bother getting me that album, turns out I was too late, he'd already got it. Not only that, instead of getting the CD it was a deluxe edition double album on vinyl, and must have cost a fortune :doh: So now I have to pretend it's grown on me and quite good after all.

I think I'll ask for socks next year.

I bought my Kawasaki ZX6-R brand new in 1998, when this came out. I named the bike "Cerys" after the lead singer because she looked gorgeous from certain angles and had a nice rasp to her voice...

So I ended up going down a rabbit hole last night - I was looking for a CD single on my server, and couldn't find it. Then it dawned on me that although I ripped all my CD albums to HDD around 15 years ago, that I didn't bother with the singles. I don't have that many (c. 200 I would guess) but suffice to say I am now going through and ripping them all, playing a few along the way. I have some where I have 2 or 3 of the same single, as there were different versions with different extra tracks - a good way to get you to buy more than one copy to help with the charts!

Anyway, that's why I ended up playing the Catatonia album as I have 3 of their singles. And why I am now playing this:

This has happened to me several times over the years. I have seen many great performances on Jools Holland, sometimes buying albums on the strength of those performances. And then been disappointed.
