I have wondered about that - I have just two 45rpm records (Amy Winehouse Hidden Treasures" and Hugh Masekela "Hope") and they are both excellent, but I've no idea how much of that is to do with being 45rpm.

I have a few 45rpm, and in my opinion 45rpm usually sounds better, that was not the question, I asked if it was worth the money.

Musically I'd say 'On The Border' is their weakest album. Still worth having though.

Hi Robin, Like everything it depends upon what you want from a musical rendition on your system. I believe that to get the best from any record you need a reasonably decent cartridge and phono stage. Yours should be more than up to getting a good performance from a good record.

I have an early UK 1974 pressing of 'On The Border' which sounds reasonably good, I would grade it VG+, it has a little surface noise on track run in and presumably some is present during the music although not noticeable. This MOFI version I was very lucky to pick up on Amazon for half its normal price, I presume end of stock that they were selling off, from a SQ point of view there is NO background noise at all, separation and detail of instruments is IMO clearer than the original. One comment on Discogs "The high end does sound weird on "Already Gone" but I think it's just the way the recording is combined with their mastering.", I do not agree with this, maybe its the chaps set up, most consider it a superior release, I find it very dynamic and enjoyable, bass is excellent and more defined than my other pressing.

I also have 'Hotel California' and The Long Run' and they are excellent as well. If you are an Eagles fan then they are worth a punt IMO, also they seem to hold their value from a resale point of view.

I still cannot understand for any reason why people now pay the prices that are being asked for vinyl records; to me, its just pure exploitation by businesses due to the fact that vinyl has become popular again. Maybe i'm living in a dream world but, a few years ago, everyone was chucking them in the bin as worthless, old fashioned junk; now people are paying crazy money for "half speed remasters," "180gram sp edtns" and the like - crazy or what ? It's just a vinyl record, it doesn't mean one should be paying a kings ransom for it!!!!!

Anyway, that's my thoughts on it. I'll buy CD's, remastered CD's etc for a few quid :lol: and I know they'll sound good for years :D!!

The sanity of record buying, like hifi and just about every hobby/pastime, doesn't bear close scrutiny, it's all a bit mental really. Though for most of us with limited funds there will come a point where we go "right enough's enough, they're taking the piss now"... I've reached that point, and fortunately I have enough vinyl now to see me out :)

I will still buy the occasional LP if I consider it to be a (relative) bargain.

I will have paid about 6 quid for this in 1985, which in today's money is about £22. So not much difference there. It's the bargain price of CDs today that makes vinyl look bad. That's not to say that some sellers aren't taking the piss - I was shocked to find last year that HMV were asking £50 for Bowie's "Young Americans". And it ain't even a double :(

I bought this about 5 years ago, and today is only the second time I've played it. I only played side one then decided to watch TT coverage on the telly. So that probably gives you an idea of how impressed I am with it. Probably will improve with repeated listens, but i wouldn't recommend it unless you came across a CD copy going cheap.

The album I played previous to that (Casual Gods by fellow-Talking Head Jerry Harrison) is much more my thing, but then I've had 30-odd years to get used to that one :)

Debut album from South Korean Peggy, released on Friday and is radio friendly dance music. I don’t know much about her but have heard and like the 3 singles so far on this album including the rather bonkers named “Lobster Telephone”.

"Lobster Telephone" is a sculpture by Salvador Dali - literally a model of a lobster replacing the handset resting on the cradle of 1930's style telephone.

It was made by Dali for a British collector of surreal art, and is now on display at the Tate gallery, London.

This is an absolute must for all Floyd fans. A live recording of Floyd's earlier work, including some pieces that was never made public (unless you have bootleg copies! :D), but so well done the lyrics are crystal clear with wonderful soundstaging. It's been a long time since I enjoyed a "Floyd" record so much.

I have yet to watch the DVD, but wonder why it was give a 15 certification?

Equal parts activist, educator, songwriter, performer and visual artist, Buffy Sainte Marie is one of the most original and important voices of our time. Throughout her life she has been an untiring champion for indigenous people and the environment, through her music, art, education projects, and by taking direct political action. Born on the Piapot Cree First Nations Reserve in the Qu'Appelle Valley, Saskatchewan, Canada, She was orphaned and later adopted, growing up in Wakefield, Massachusetts, attending the University of Massachusetts Amherst, earning degrees (BA 1963 and PhD 1983) in teaching and Oriental philosophy.

Her career in music started in New York City's Greenwich Village in the early to 1960s alongside contemporaries Leonard Cohen, Neil Young, and Joni Mitchell, for who she was an early champion. Making a name for herself as a gifted songwriter, many of Buffy's earliest songs were covered, and often turned into chart-topping hits, by other artists including Chet Atkins, Janis Joplin and Taj Mahal. One of her most popular songs, "Until It's Time for You to Go", has been recorded by artists as diverse as Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Neil Diamond and Cher. But it was her song "Universal Soldier" that became one of the first anti-Viet Nam war anthems to inspire a generation to protest, the lyrics pointedly calling out every participant in the war machine, not just the leaders. The song appeared on her debut album It's My Way released on Vanguard Records in 1964, and later became a hit for Donovan. Buffy was subsequently named Billboard Magazine's Best New Artist. Her song "My Country 'Tis of Thy People You're Dying" from 1966 addressed the mistreatment of Native Americans at a time that few people were aware of the plight of the indigenous. Buffy Sainte-Marie is well known for breaking down social & cultural barriers, such as breast-feeding her infant son Dakota on the nationally televised program for children, Sesame Street. Her best known work, winning the "Best Original Song" Academy Award, performed by Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes, is the classic "Up Where We Belong" from the film An Officer & Gentleman, co-written by her then husband, Jack Nitzsche.

"Power In The Blood" was recorded in Toronto throughout 2014 and 2015, will be released on May 12 on True North Records. It was recorded with three different producers (Michael Wojewoda, Chris Birkett and Jon Levine). The album starts with Buffy reprising the title track from her very first release, "It's My Way", demonstrating how her work can transcend two generations, still sounding contemporary, inspiring individualism and self-expression 50 years after it was written. The title track for Power In The Blood appears 2nd, is an adaptation of the Alabama 3 song of the same name - one of two songs that were not written by Buffy on the album. Other highlights include "Orion" a Jack Nitzsche film score over which Buffy wrote new lyrics, their first collaboration to be released since Up Where We Belong, and the hard hitting socio-politital statements "Generation" and "Uranium War". "For more than four decades, legendary Canadian-American Cree singer/songwriter Buffy Sainte-Marie has been blazing trails."

I've got that on vinyl and I agree it's just nonsense. As for the critics, only liking 'eclectic' music (i.e self indulgent rubbish) has always been a bit of a badge of superiority with some types. You know the sort I mean. Every sixth form had at least a couple of them.

Yes - according to discog sales, the average sale price for the vinyl copy is around £80. So look after your copy: who knows what it will be worth in 5 years time.

Well, I enjoyed this so much I hopped onto Tidal, and wow - it appears all of the tracks recorded for the film have been found, restored, and released. Available to stream, but released on vinyl next month so that’s a definite purchase for me!

Thank you :) - I do have a massive spectrum of music/genres that I like; one of my only big dislikes is today's mainstream/chart music - I literally cannot stand it. Its a conveyor belt of manufactured CRAP!!! Mostly talentless rich kids whose face fits for quick profit turnover for the music industry moguls who've given up on what I call real bands/music (probably gonna get some backlash for that description/statement but, oh well, so what) :thumbsup:

Oh, and by the way, another great pop band and my idea of a rock n roll version of ABBA was ROXETTE.................. absolutely love em!!!! Marie and Pers' voice were great and combined with the more up front guitars and rock sound just worked superb!!!! :thumbsup:

Only played this once since I bought it back in 2011. I thought it was rough and noisy, even by RHCP standards.

Please do Alex. I also have the 'Green'album', 'The Altogether', 'Snivilisation', and 'Monster's Exist', but this is my favourite. I would say to anyone trying them out to go for 'In Sides', and if they don't like that they probably don't like Orbital ;)

"The Box" is epic but does go on a bit, the rest I'd say is Orbital at their very best. Tails off a bit towards the end imo.

One of the youths from Metallica owns it now, according to Wikipedia anyway. Moore had to sell it to cover the cost of a cancelled tour.

My favourite of his solo albums is still 'Back On The Streets.'

I ended up playing the 1988 follow up, From Langley Park to Memphis - another great album, though perhaps a bit more commercial, but only to be expected after their successful debut.

So first up this morning is the 1992 fourth album from this band. Although their first album hit the racks way back in 1984 Miss Adu and Co. have hardly been prolific with a total of only 6 studio albums in 40 years.

I have to admit that this is only my second album purchase despite being an enormous fan of the debut album Diamond Life, which I have on original release vinyl and the Millennium edition CD release.

The opening track here is of course the one with the only too familiar bass line, (even if you don't own the track) as it is still a regular tv and radio playlist choice.

My next choice may be device amongst devotees of the original version of this truly iconic live album.

This 25th Anniversary edition extends the track list over 2 cds rather than the single CD of the complete original double live LP. As for sound quality, well this version is certainly a little more "live" by which I perhaps mean, raw sounding, somehow less polished, than the original, which of course can't be the case as its the same master tapes ! I suspect that strangely, on CD, the original version is a little more "analogue" sounding !

Back in the day A&M had a enviable reputation for sound quality on thier albums, whether that be Herb Alpert and The Tijuana Brass, Chris de Burgh, The Carpenters, The Police, Quincy Jones, Supertramp, Susan Vega etc, etc, so I suspect CD releases of earlier albums, originally only on LP or Cassette, were treated with equal respect when reissued !

The additional tracks were chosen, produced and remixed by the man whose surname adorns the Album cover, proudly proclaiming "Frampton Comes Alive!".

True story. In 1999 I went on holiday with my then wife and the in laws To California in the good old US of A. Writeable CDs were a relatively new thing, and I decided to make a compilation CD of songs that featured California in the title, so California Dreamin’ by The Mamas & The Papas, Californication by the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Californie by Air - you get the picture. Well, track number 1 was Take California, the first track on this Propellerheads album.

We collected the full-size Buick from the Rental company, and I proudly announced that I had made a California road trip CD, duly inserted into the CD player, and then Take California exploded out of the speakers at what can only be described as eardrum rupturing levels. My father in law nearly had a heart attack, my mother in law (probably) pissed herself and my ex-wife screamed at me and my CD was banned for the rest of the trip. The beginning of the end. :lol:

Yeah, I agree on NWA, it’s a bit too much. I do have some Wu Tang Clan, might give that a go, but just at the moment listening to something a bit more mellow, good album this.

This is one of my favourite albums of all time, beautifully crafted songs, music, recording, everything just works, even if you are not an Eagles fan this has to be one of those albums that can be appreciated just for its sheer class. Sadly I never got the see them play live.

It's play now and then album for me, superbly mixed and produced, and very good recording SQ. There are quite a few classic songs on it. I saw them live at Wembley Arena on when they were World Tour with it, the stage was impressive being in the shape of the spaceship on the album cover, at the start lots of build up and white smoke as the top half lifted up to reveal ELO in their glory, impressive for back them. It was a very good concert to say the least.

Now this is not as big a challenge for a band who has had lead vocals from two members, as the remaining member is still a familiar part of the bands sound. The album has many familiar Supertramp traits but there is certainly a more bluesy and more synth element to the sound.

I have all the albums prior to this on either vinyl or cd or both ! However, for some reason I have never got around to buying this untill now. Which in part is due to the good fortune of winning a £100 Amazon voucher for filling in one of those online surveys that you normally bin straight away when you see thr email !

Next up and also courtesy of the Amazon voucher is their 1987 release and the last to feature all new music.

The album was a turn of direction of sorts, with most of the songs stepping back from their progressive rock sound, employing synthesised dance beats and rhythms. Chief songwriter Rick Davies later recalled, "Free as a Bird*was an experiment to try and be modern and build it up with computers and drum machines and have people come in one by one, which makes you lose the band spirit a little bit."

Which sums everything up quite nicely. Don't get me wrong this is not a bad album just a different sound than you have known from Supertramp but not as big a departure from what you know as Rush took with Grace Under Pressure !

Agree Supertramp have a distinctive sound, and the album you cite sounds interesting if, as you say, it is a bit more 'bluesy'.

Cheers Alex, yes I think I would :) I was aware of them for remixes they did for others, though Dubstar's "Not so Manic Now" is the only one that springs to mind (this was the 90s and my memory is a bit hazy ;))

Nick Warren (one half of the duo) was a big name among DJs back then, and had a residency at Cream, Liverpool, so I will have witnessed at least one of his sets there... Global Underground released CDs of various sets he did around the world, so he must have been doing something right. Global underground releases are relatively pricey as used CDs go, no 2 quid jobbies there. Probably becoming collectable.

Anyway, I've just ordered We Love Machine off Music Magpie, and with a lot of luck it'll arrived before I go away on Monday. But more likely it'll be waiting for me when we get back :)

Have the CD as well, but forgot I had the vinyl and well pleased after checking the current value, have stumbled across a few things I forgot I had.
Now that I have a dedicated music room, have finally got round to sorting the vinyl out, major pain the ass by the way, need to starting loading it all onto Discogs.

How many LPs do you have? I have thought about doing the Discogs thing but I'm way too lazy. I doubt I will ever sell any of them, anyway, so the value is moot.

For a long time now I've been meaning to listen to something by Richard Hawley. Picked up a CD by him a few months ago (don't remember the title) but was very disappointed. I thought he was famed as a guitar player, but the disc did nothing to display it. What it did do was to show up his indifferent singing.

I'm still looking - perhaps you could recommend something?

Badass electronica! I saw them when they were touring this album, must have been about '95. That was an assault on the ears, I don't think they've recovered yet! Shame about Keith.

Yes, good stuff, pulled it out for a play as my Son just saw them play live at the Isle Of Wight Festival, he said it was fantastic, even sans Keith.

It's not on the level of 'The Nightfly' but it's got some great stuff on it, especially side 2 which could practically be half of a proper 'Dan album.
