jimmy was a guitarist with muddy at one time.. he is past his best here but its a decent album of electric blues/harmonica. he was regarded as a players player

Added to the collection to complete it in terms of studio albums, this one, originally released 1997, is much maligned IMO, not hearing it before I approached it with and open mind. Phil Collins having left the band, leaving Banks and Rutherford, was replaced on vocals by Ray Wilson(ex Stiltskin), drumming mainly done by Nir Zidkyahu(ex Stiltskin).
To the album, the songs are actually pretty good, "Calling All Stations" is reminiscent of having a later Pink Floyd feel to it, with soaring guitar solo. Some have a 'Mike and the Mechanics' feel, which you might expect, "If that's what you need" has a 'Wind and Whispering feel, with sweeping keyboards from Banks with an underlying muted rhythm guitar. Ray Wilson does a very good job vocally, with a great range and distinctive voice on the whole album. I would say all the tracks are expertly crafted, recorded and produced, I presume Genesis and the recording company may think so as well having gone to the trouble to re-release with 1/2 speed mastering at Abbey Road. 'The Dividing Line" has a very tight instrumental instrumental, the vocal is well up there, a very strong track, more typical of a driving Genesis number that could have become a mainstay. "Uncertain Weather" has a "Watcher in the Skies" aspect to it, in a very good way, it has some very low pounding bass pedal lines from Mr Banks.
So IMHO if you like Genesis and can accept it without Gabriel or Collins crooning then it is actually pretty good, it was a shame that some of the fanbase left them at the time, maybe because Mr Collins had become such a powerful force in the act and on his own he overshadowed the group.

A classic, sadly often overlooked by many, well worth a listen. They are often sited as Psychedelic Rock/Prog Rock but I think the breadth of their compositions go beyond these limits and IMHO ventures into aspects of Jazz.

I think you have forgotten those below, included because they all entered into the glam rock spirit at some point, flamboyant, cross-dressing, fantasy lyrics no-one understood, catchy riff driven songs etc.
As you may notice there are some very well known and influential artists who rode the glam rock wave, saw their way through the 2 years of punk backlash, which was effectively engineered anti-pop and went up its own rear end. They then saw the emergence of early goth and new-wave both harping back to glam influences but more edgy in some cases, by the end of the 80s, the pop scene was loosing its way and became tedious with artists trying to find the new thing.
So whether you liked the glam era or not it did spawn some Very successful artists some of which are still with us today.

How can I have "a big gap in my listening years" when I have already said I detest most of the artist/groups you list? If I hadn't listened to them, then I wouldn't be able to say if I detested them or not.
I've been listening to, and collecting music for the last sixty years, so there is not much I have missed.

It doesnt really matter if you like glam rock or not, the three you mention were all rather successful and entered into the glam rock spirit at the time and carried on working for quite some time, their popularity and others surely means they must have some merit.
William Shakespeare I vaguely recall being from Aus, and having a glam rock single.

In the 80s I saw The Sweet live, and though i didn't mind their singles offerings in the 70s, they weren't the sort of band that made it into my collection. So I wasn't expecting much from their live gig. I was wrong. Sure, they played some of 'the hits', but also a lot of worthy rock material, and played it well.
I've no doubt plenty of perfectly good bands of the 70s jumped on the Glam Rock bandwagon just to get noticed, but their albums and concerts better revealed their true colours.

I never saw the point in 'Glam-Rock'. It was just another crass money making thing and had no real credibility. It was aimed at twelve year olds and treated with ridicule by proper Rock fans (in my opinion).

Funny you say it has no real credibility however its interesting that songs by Slade, Sweet, T. Rex, Bowie, Mud, and various other artists that fitted the glam rock mould are still played on various radio stations.
However, sadly IMO, proper rock, if there is such a thing rarely gets played. I cannot remember the last time I heard an old tune from Deep Purple, Atomic Rooster, Rainbow, Blue Oyster Cult, Groundhogs, or similar on the regular air waves, but then they were never considered main stream, successful or not. Occasionally a Pink Floyd, Rolling Stones or Led Zep number is played but thats about it.

Remember one mains rubbish is anothers gold.
I dont particularly like Rap or modern R&B/hip-hop(as it is called today) but actually recognise that there is some good in there as well as some not so good(IMO). Getting into Genreism really seems a bit pointless and at the risk of missing something that might be worthwhile.
Anyway I think I will go back to listening for now[emoji3]

What I would call a stunning album, it's up their with the best IMHO, recently re-released on 3*LP and its SQ is excellent. One of the best albums I have listened to for some time, this will played a lot.

I think you have forgotten those below, included because they all entered into the glam rock spirit at some point, flamboyant, cross-dressing, fantasy lyrics no-one understood, catchy riff driven songs etc.
As you may notice there are some very well known and influential artists who rode the glam rock wave, saw their way through the 2 years of punk backlash, which was effectively engineered anti-pop and went up its own rear end. They then saw the emergence of early goth and new-wave both harping back to glam influences but more edgy in some cases, by the end of the 80s, the pop scene was loosing its way and became tedious with artists trying to find the new thing.
So whether you liked the glam era or not it did spawn some Very successful artists some of which are still with us today.

Whilst I agree with the gist of your theory and I know you didn't compile the list, some of these are not glam rock. Iggy Pop? New York Dolls? Alice Cooper?
If you look up 'Glam Rock' in the dictionary there's a picture of Slade. Start there and work out from both ends. Neither way do you ever get to Iggy Pop.
Or Steve Harley for that matter. I imagine he'd be mortified to think he was classed as 'Glam Rock.' :)

Steve Harleys refered to Glam Rock with respect to Cockney Rebel, even discogs categorise them as such, The Psychomodo their 2nd album, which I happen to have is certainly of the ilk. The NY Dolls are also classified as Glam/Rock and I would have considered them as such at that time. Alice is a difficult one because whilst his music is primarily Rock, his persona, stage shows and the albums all lean to Glam essence, I suppose one could consider him to be more of a theatrical hard rock artist. I agree I don't really see Iggy as Glam.

If you could hear a song on the radio by a Glam Rock band, never having seen them you wouldn't be able to identify them as such. That's their 'greatest hits' album. 'Pappa Was A Rollin' Stone' is off the 'Are You Okay?' album.

Well I did not know that! I just saw it at a car boot for 50p, saw the above mentioned track on it, and thought I'm havin' that. Makes sense though, "Shake your Head" track is rather later iirc, about '93/94, and that is on the same CD.

Well I started off with Leonard Cohen's "You Want it Darker", but Mrs. P complained it was sending her to sleep. Leonard can sound a bit like he's reading a bedtime story sometimes. So moved onto Steve Earle's "Copperhead Road". That's got her cheesy plates moving :)

Yes they have split unfortunately, as a result all their vinyl has nearly tripled in price, if you can get it. Time for some re-releases I think.

I like Leonard Cohen, and have most of his output. It's the poetry of his lyrics that fascinate me, rather like Bob Dylan; and also like Dylan, Cohen has a lousy singing voice.
Saw Cohen live in Manchester, some 50 years ago. He was excellent, but the audience wanted him to sing only his most maudlin tracks, which Cohen didn't want to do.

I have always loved Tom Petty, I don't think he ever released a bad album, I took the plunge with this one and it is worth every penny of the £40 I paid and that many times over. It is a stunning re-release, possibly one of the quietest pressings I have, superb dynamics and wonderful mix, I wasn't ready for such a great record.
Musically it has tracks that sound Dylanesque but are definitely TP, there are some lovely ballads and then there are out and out rockers with the wonderful TP style echoing back to earlier days, just wonderful. If only he was still with us, such a shame.
A MUST HAVE IMHO!!!

One I got the other day as part of the vinyl trade in. These Fripp and Steven Wilson re-mix re-issues are superb IMO, very good soundstage with marvellous separation and clarity, well worth considering and not expensive, the vinyl is near on silent on lead ins and quiet passages.

One I got the other day as part of the vinyl trade in. These Fripp and Steven Wilson re-mix re-issues are superb IMO, very good soundstage with marvellous separation and clarity, well worth considering and not expensive, the vinyl is near on silent on lead ins and quiet passages.

I have always loved Tom Petty, I don't think he ever released a bad album, I took the plunge with this one and it is worth every penny of the £40 I paid and that many times over. It is a stunning re-release, possibly one of the quietest pressings I have, superb dynamics and wonderful mix, I wasn't ready for such a great record.
Musically it has tracks that sound Dylanesque but are definitely TP, there are some lovely ballads and then there are out and out rockers with the wonderful TP style echoing back to earlier days, just wonderful. If only he was still with us, such a shame.
A MUST HAVE IMHO!!!

Even though they were played to death in the 80's after Brothers in Arms came out they certainly knew how to turn out a tune or two, marvellous stuff. Every rock fan should have at least this compilation of theirs IMO.

It's not a 1st press but is very early on probably 3rd press from the same year, I also have to much more recent 2016 re-mastered release. What is noticeable on the original is that there is much more punch and definition, especially to the bass, transients and dynamics seem much better. It is a favourite of mine as it came out when I was in 6th form college and we listened to it a lot and I have always liked it, I was never very happy with re-master so I very pleased to have an early copy that sounds great.

The great majority of re-masters are IMO pretty poor. Why can't the record companies just leave things alone and learn how to press records properly - instead of milking their libraries with 'limited editions', 'immersion collections'; 'anniversary releases', or whatever the latest marketing idea it is that has come to their mind.
And if the records were pressed properly, there would be no need to have 180g, 200g etc. versions.

Yes, if you haven't yet see if you can find a 2nd or 3rd variant, they should not be too costly on Discogs for a NM/VG+ sleeve will never be great as subject to discolouration with time.

Probably one of those seminal albums of the early 80's that set the scene for new-wave and neo-psychedelia. I got this album when it came out before it hit the charts and played it a great deal in my VW split screen van used to go surfing in N. Devon every other week, their follow up album 'Heaven Up' is another great one. Another great album in a similar vain, of the time, is Teardrop Explodes - 'Kilamanjaro'.

Not sure I get the similarity between The Doors and Echo and the Bunnymen, I also like both. I had never considered The Doors lyrics to be poetic but maybe that's just me. Lyrics and the poetry is a tricky thing, it varies so much, sometimes a song is just sentences making observations, other times it has depth and meaning in the words used like poetry.

I listened to this one earlier, I had never heard it before, it was a great listen and it is a great album. I was tempted to purchase when I saw the re-release and I already have another Traffic album which I love. This re-issue/re-master is very good IMO, nice and open sound, great dynamics, and quiet pressing, they must have taken time with it.

Just finished listening to this one, I am not sure why but I never really got into Traffic when I was younger but I really like them now. Another great re-issue/re-master worth its price.

40 years old on 30 May and it still sounds fresh, where did all that time go it feels like yesterday I was sat in my VW van at Puttsborough Sands after a day surfing listening to this watching the waves as the sun went down? Their early albums really were very good full of passion and expression.
