I came across John Mayer during my recent excursions trying to play guitar, the song 'Gravity' from his album 'Continmuum' was on the Gibson guitar teaching app, and I found the composition and song structure very appealing. By coincidence I came across this album on CD a few weeks later in a charity shop, so it was purchased.

"Heavier Things', his 3rd album, it is predominantly Blues/Rock with one or two songs with a greater pop feel. His lyrics are well worth listening to, generally contemplative or story telling. What I like is he takes quite simple musical structures but gets the most from them with some very soulful playing. The aforementioned 'Gravity" is well worth a listen as well. I will also be buying Continuum.

I have not posted for some time as I have been avidly practicing guitar, currently I seem to have reached a plateau with what I can play accurately and consistently, and improvement seems to be stagnating. I struggle with keeping to rhythms and tempo, some are worse than others, this can be very limiting and frustrating. As a result I have found a guitar teacher locally, he is very good and is also a full time musician, he is confident that he can help and so far his guidance is helping slowly.

I hope that some of you enjoy John Mayer. :)

I sympathise with the guitar thing. I got a guitar off the neighbours when I was 16. First I couldn't play at all. Then after a short while I could play but I was rubbish. Then, after about two years of really intense practice, I was slightly less rubbish.

My brother, on the other hand, who was already an accomplished pianist and violinist, picked up the guitar anytime I left it alone for ten minutes and within 3 days he could play like Hendrix.

If you weren't born with that innate musical aptitude it's a slog just to get to half decent. I never got there.

I found that jamming with people helped with the rhythm and tempo aspect. Helped that I have a few friends who are professional musicians, but there's only so long they were prepared to shepherd a beginner. However first time I had to improvise a solo I managed to accomplish it and in the right key, which buoyed me up a bit :) They weren't so impressed ofc.

I'll check out John Mayer, I think I might have come across him before though.

I would love to be able to play a musical instrument. Given the choice it would be the piano, as it is so versatile; allowing one to play a variety of musical genres.

When I was very young I used to be able to play on the linoleum, but now all I can do is play the fool!

The only music lessons I had was for violin, and I was pretty good at it, reaching "first violin" in the school orchestra. Once I left school, I bought a cheap electric guitar, and a classic Casio CZ-101 synth. I taught myself how to play, and was in a couple of local bands on keyboards, including one that the lead singer left to become moderately successful in the early 90's. I don't do regrets in life, but not pursuing music is close to being one.

My 12 year old son is a very good drummer, as well as playing sax and piano - I have not pushed him at all, just exposed him to options, but he seems to be gravitating towards music. Luckily his older sister wants to become a Doctor, so hopefully she will be able to dish out the occasional handout to her penniless younger brother! :lol:

I think I prefer 'Let it Bleed' to the later 'Sticky Fingers', but it's a close run.

Know what you mean about the remastered version. There is a track (forget which one it is) that is a complete remix- and it sounds awful!

Great album, terrible cover. When I got the CD at a car boot a few years ago, I had to check that the disc looked genuine, because the cover looked like it had been knocked up on a home printer.

Can anyone tell me how I can "copy and paste" using my smartphone? When I copy things, it (the system) tells me it has copied to the clipboard. How do I then access that and copy to the AoS site? I would have no problem with a laptop, but most of the time I do everything with my phone.

On my phone (Android), once it's on the clipboard you just go the place you want to paste it on AoS, long press there, a paste option then comes up and you press that. Job done.

Cd version, because I was being lazy. But she complained of the sound being 'thin' (her words), so switched to my vinyl copy. Much better. Admittedly the volume was rather low, but even my cloth ears could hear the difference. I'll look into that CD issue tomorrow.

Apologies for the long delay replying. I have been pre-occupied with my new obsession,trying learn how to play guitar and for it to sound reasonable.

At this point I can strum various songs, but am focusing on WYWH - Pink Floyd, Samba Pa Ti - Santana, The Thrill is Gone - BB King, Let Me Play The Blues For You - Albert King, Barraccuda - Heart and Sweet Home Alabama - Lynyrd Skynyrd.

For all of them I am learning both rhythm and solos along to backing tracks. The first five I am most consistent at playing, but still making mistakes, rhythm errors now and then and odd wrong or missed notes in solos. Sweet Home Alabama playing it accurately and not a cheat version is something of a challenge at present.

I also picked up a banjo in great condition on an antique shop a month ago. An interesting beast to play, possibly an instrument of the devil, as it’s hard to get it do what you want. [emoji2957][emoji23]

Still listening to the system but only an hour or so a day now, maybe a bit more healthy.

If you're in the market for snide perfumes, bog rolls or power tools by makers you've never heard of, you're sorted. Music Magpie all the way from now on, I can buy it for less without leaving the sofa.

Those power tools have often been stolen, or are 110V only.

I buy all my CDs from charity shops. The local Oxfam here in London being in cosmopolitan area often stock interesting titles, which at only 50p each are worth taking a punt. All you have to be aware of is broken or cracked cases, especially the 'spider'.

Over the years I've had the power tools robbed from my van a few times. Never got anything back. And I never had any luck seeing them at car boot sales - mine probably end up at a booty 100 miles away, while the ones I'm seeing for sale were probably nicked 100 miles away.

I would never buy any from a car boot sale for that very reason - the guilt would peck my head forever, because I know just how shit it is to have your gear stolen.

All of the charity shops up here are rubbish. Plenty of Robbie Williams, Coldplay and Katie Melua. And a load of MOR pap that even at 67 I was born too late to appreciate.

But I see that Lydon's old buddy Jah Wobble did a "Metal Box Rebuilt in Dub" album, which I might have to try. I used to have an Invaders of the Heart album of his (Rising above Bedlam) and quite liked it till it got nicked.

I don't tend to listen to music in the evenings since I got new neighbours who are still an unknown quantity. The old girl who lived there previously was deaf as a post but these are young and have a child.

Bedtime used to be 2230 on school nights but now retired I am staying up a bit later.

Usually it's headphones only after about 10pm, but I am still listening some nights, but probably had too many beers to be bothered to post what I am listening to!

I remember "Love Story" coming out, what a great tune... it's happened before that I've bought an album on the strength of a particular single, only to find the rest is cack - but I've just taken a punt on this one... £2.63 off Music Magpie, it'd be rude not to :)
