Eric Clapton is celebrating his 80th birthday today. So I have been playing records charting his career from his debut with John Mayall, through to Cream, Derrick and the Dominoes, and on to his later solo performances.

It's a great record - I was still humming the tunes days after listening to it. That's why I decided to get a better version. I think all the releases of it are fine except the 2007.

Probably the best LP the Doors released. But then, with the exception of 'Soft Parade', they are all good.

Just been to the Spring Concert at my kids school. They're both in the orchestra (Will is the drummer, Tamz plays clarinet). Anyway, one of the girls sang "Hurts Like Hell" by Fleurie, which was one of a number of songs that I didn't recognise, so now giving the album a spin. Pretty good so far.
One of the lads at the school concert played guitar and sang "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" - he was really good. So...

"Hope" is a good one, a live recording from about 20 years ago. Was a favourite at hifi shows at the time, due to the top notch sq. Though they only ever played the 'Stimela' track. You've next to no "hope" of getting a copy cheap, so if you see it snap it up. I got mine on vinyl back in the days when I had money.
How's your Boz CD then? Noticeably better than your remastered version?

Well I've never played this as I don't have it. Just ordered it on CD (3 quid off Music Magpie). Macca might be interested to know I checked the dB database first, and settled on a 1988 release (though it looks like none of The Doors releases are bad).

I got waylaid. A couple of CDs over from 'Screamadelica' was this, which I got a couple of years ago then forgot. It's a 30 minute long maxi single with different mixes of Come Together and Loaded, plus a couple of other tracks.
Surprisingly good, it won't be another 2 years before it gets played again.

Walker Texas Ranger? That's the thing with Chuck Norris isn't it? The log with a beard? I lump him in with Jean-Claude Van Damme and Steven Seagall, no good at acting, but handy in a scrap...

Mothers of Invention - 'Freak Out'
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/7/79/FreakOut%21.jpg/220px-FreakOut%21.jpg
Debut album by Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention.
A great selection of albums there Barry.
I was just thinking about 'Freak Out' the other day, I really need to get another copy, I've not heard it since the 70s. 'Trouble Every Day' is just as relevant today as it's ever been.
Thanks Guys - I dug them out in response to Alex's interest in hearing something by Zappa (apart from Hot Rats, which I also played, but didn't list).
I have inherited a lot of Zappa from a good friend of mine who sadly died. All in all I have about 35 titles, some of which I have yet to hear.
Forty years old next month - 17th May to be exact. I was doing my 'O' Levels.

One of the first LPs I bought. Played it to death on the 'groove grinder' I had at the time to the point it had to be replaced after a year.
(Being a Leica user, I was always intrigued to know details of the lens fitted to the Leica M3 camera round Eric Clapton's neck.)

I don't have anything live by Faithless, what's it like?
I don't have anything live by Faithless, what's it like?
I think the best I can say is “it’s ok”. I know why I haven’t played it very often, aside that I am not a massive fan of live recordings as mostly I feel “you had to be there” and this is probably in that category.
It doesn’t sound that brilliant recording quality wise to me, probably because it is live, and because they are using real instruments I.e. drums and guitars it just seems a bit strange when you are used to the studio versions of epic songs like Insomnia, God is a DJ, We Come 1 etc., and it is relatively short in song numbers (only 12) and lots of crowd interaction which is a bit distracting if you haven’t seen them live, which I haven’t.
If you see it for a quid at a car boot I’d say it’s worth it but I wouldn’t be urging you to go order online unless very cheap or the points I have made don’t put you off.

Cheers Alex, I sort of thought that might be the case. I agree about live recordings, they can so often be disappointing. And in the case of Faithless, as with other acts of that ilk, going from studio electronics to a live setting with real instruments is going to be losing a lot of what made it good in the first place.
I did have a live Faithless DVD a few years ago, I didn't watch it all the way through.
Anyway, Mrs. P is on her way home, so just one more record.

I agree about live recording - usually the microphones were badly located; there was far to much audience adulation to start and even more of it at the end of the set. All in all a waste of time.
But that was then ('70s - '80s), now recordings of live performances are much better. The recording engineers know how to mike up the instruments and/or amplifiers, and the audience appreciation is now edited to a respectful minimum. Obviously the overall performance is not as well polished as it would be for a studio recording, but you do have the excitement and experience of it being a 'one off'.
Regarding the Dire Straits album, excellent choice there (along with their debut album), but you might be amused to learn that a colleague at work who had just bought the LP complained of excess hiss at the start of one of the tracks, and was going to return the copy for a replacement. I had to tell him there was nothing wrong with his copy - what he thought was "hiss" was actually the sound of waves and surf breaking on the shore!

It's actually a bootleg, which I don't usually buy, but I was at the gig and it is the only way to own a physical copy.
Well it looks very professional for a bootleg. Easy enough to record the broadcast, but going on to cutting a disc and producing the sleeve artwork takes some doing.

Not played this for a long while, still makes me feel sad at such a tragic loss of a great talent, but a brilliant album nonetheless.

+1. I think I'll play some Amy in the morning.
Someone got me her "Lioness" album years ago when I still had my LP12, which only played at 33rpm. I hadn't noticed that the album was 45rpm, and when I first put it on I thought maybe she was doing a duet with Barry White  After that it went unplayed for two years till I traded in the Linn.
That LP12 could also make Kylie sound like Rick Astley.
I’ve not yet watched the Amy biopic, “Back to Black” which is on Netflix - will give that a try today I think.

Interesting cover - if Dan d'Agostino went into making record players, it would probably look like that.
Where'd you buy that Alex? Italy? Only 3 on Ebay, starting at 30-odd quid.

I bought it when it first came out - I can't remember where I got it from, unfortunately. I can't remember how I first discovered it, either. It's a bit full-on - can't say I would recommend it for 30 quid!

Well I have listened to some of all of the tracks (only the first track was listened through to completion), and have to say after 1 hour 9 minutes would have been driven completely bonkers!
So no purchase from me - and anyway they nicked the idea for the cover artwork from Ian Anderson's 'Songs from the Wood'.

See what you mean Barry, though you had me 'stumped' till I saw the back of the cover. I had to 'log' onto Discogs to get this pic :)

Listening to the Beatles anthology - the version with unreleased tracks and practice versions of their songs, makes you appreciate their genius, the most poppy songs reveal their inner rocker, tracks that 'That means a lot', and 'It's only love', the melodies of course are the real genius.

It's a genuine record. Electronic dance, Trip hop, Electronica and Downtempo.

Good album. From 1997, before vinyl was popular again, so probably not many around :) The only Chemicals album I have on vinyl is "Exit Planet Dust", definitely not first pressing.

Now you're just showing off! :D
I do have all these on CD, but never got them on vinyl. There's a good reason for this: These albums were almost always played late at night when we were too out of it to be trusted with vinyl set ups  Though it was easier to "lose" CDs on those nights, that happened to a few.

I like 'Kamakiriad' but after that his solo albums tailed off a bit for me. Still got them all of course, got 'Kamakiriad' on LP, CD and DVD-A.
Does the DVD-A disc sound any better than the CD version?

Had a quick look on Ebay, vinyl copies of Tracy Chapman and also her "Crossroads" album have rather high asking prices. Don't know why, I know they're very good but not what I would call 'classic' albums. I bet if I could be arsed checking, there might be plenty of other surprises value-wise.
When someone inherits my records they're either going to become rich or get ripped off something awful. I don't suppose it's something I should be worried about though, so I won't be wrapping them in cotton wool.
