Excellent choice Steve - IMHO his best after 'Zero She Flies' that is.
Don't know that one, I should watch out for it :)

They were 'OK ', but I'm not sure I like them enough to buy the record.

This Christmas I've been watching some of the BBC's 'Top of the Pops' archives (mostly 70s and 80s).
I like the BBC's music programmes where the songs are accompanied by associated trivia, always learn something new. Example: For his sampling of "Every Breath You Take", Rapper P. Diddy (or Puff Daddy, or whatever they're calling him this week) for his "I'll be Missing You" single, is paying Sting $2,000 a day. I could live off that :)

Now all the Christmas chaos is behind us I can finally make a start on my Christmas/birthday presents. Starting with this:
https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/81D9AKPj2RL._AC_SX679_.jpg
The album cover is truly awful, but gives no indication of the type of music here. She's a blue rock singer/songwriter guitarist who hails from Bradford, and definitely worth a listen. I first heard this at NW Audio show 18 months ago demoing Kerr Acoustics speakers and finally got round to putting it on my wish list.

On the subject of forgetting my birthday, Anita's son forgot mine last year, when he had meant to buy me Kylie's latest album. Which "Fever" certainly isn't (being over 20 years old) but he got it me anyway, in addition to her actual latest one. he really didn't need to get these on vinyl, prices being what they are, but he did anyway God bless him.

Bought from Phil Bishop of this parish last November, it was rather close to Christmas and I was ordered to leave it unopened so that it would become a birthday present from Anita. Vinyl is truly near mint, sounds like it was barely played. Hard to believe it's 51 years old. Sounds great, thank you Anita and thank you Phil :)

So what's it like Alex, and who's the old bloke with her?
If you like Raye, and you like the live performance she did with The Heritage Orchestra, then you’ll enjoy it. If you only know her from her pop songs, I think you would equally enjoy it as there is enough of a difference to make it accessible to those who don’t normally like pop.
I think she’s brilliant and been following her as a “featured artist” for years, but her talent really comes into its own on her own work.
Apparently, the chap with her on the cover with her is her Swiss grandfather and this was his first opportunity to see one of her live shows. Ahhhhhhh. :-)

Love this album, probably not very likely to appeal to most here, full-on electronic dance music combined with digital art. Seeing one of his shows live is definitely on my bucket list…

Hard to describe Steve. I really like them, but they're certainly not for everyone. Very left wing / working class political, very sweary, on-point (topically / politically) lyrics, sort of post Punk/ street rap musically.

Excellent choice.
Recorded using a Calrec Soundfield microphone, accurately capturing the ambience of the venue (and of the background noise, which is often misinterpreted by some listeners).
A good record to test the resolving power of ones system.

Yes I think I would agree with that. Although I bought their eponymous debut way back when it came out (about 1972 iirc), to my ears their following album completely eclipsed it.
These days I have all of their studio albums on vinyl except that one which I eventually got on CD from Music Magpie for a couple of quid. Says it all really. Although I consider For Your Pleasure to be my favourite, it's Avalon that gets played the most.
I also really like 'Stranded' (their third). By this time Brian Eno had left due to differing ideas to Ferry's on the band's direction, and I wondered at the time if his replacement (Eddie Jobson) would be up to the job. IMO he was. Some superb tracks on that album.

It was released in 2003, and produced by Bowie and Tony Visconti. Worth having for "Bring me the Disco King", which is definitely not disco and is quite unlike anything Bowie has done before, with piano by Mike Garson, who provided that extraordinary piano on Aladdin Sane's title track.
Can be had for about 3 quid on Ebay, so worth a punt.
I still have to acquire a copy of "Low" to complete the Berlin Trilogy, and I will get round to it at some point.

To my ears disjointed, discordant and virtually unlistenable, frequently sounding like the CD's skipping (it isn't, though I wish it was). If there's any members out there that can find some music in this album you're a better man than me, and you're welcome to this free of charge. It's occupying shelf space that could be given to something I'll listen to.
Some good reviews for this, I suspect some don't want to pan it for fear of appearing thick.

If you like AOR or rock or metal then this album an absolute killer!!!! Listening to it, I can hear the influences of lots of bands of that genre - the album is like crossing Bon Jovi and Foreigner with the addition of other bands (Danger Danger, Winger etc) from that era.
I know that most people on here aren't into that kind of music but, hey, someone's gotta keep the flag flyin' and this album seriously rocks!!

I haven't seen her for quite a few years (suppose I could always look her up on the net). I only like her first 2 albums, after that I felt it became more like "sickly" pop music with less guitars and less quality.

Goodness knows why RLJ chose to release a 10" EP. Maybe it was for contractual reasons, but it is a bugger to find as it it gets pushed to the back, between her 12" LPs, so the spine cannot be easily read.

I have to say, I have her Greatest Hits album and some of the singles on it are absolutely fabulous - they've got a rock vibe to them and I love em!! "Leave A Light On For Me" just rocks!!! Also "We Want The Same Thing" is an awesome tune!!! I could go on but I wont - suffice to say, she's done some great songs and has a great voice!!

I would agree her debut was probably her best, certainly my favourite. Though I didn't buy it when it was first released.
In about 1983 "Hifi Answers" were reviewing Heybrook's HB3 speakers and this was one of the records they used. It sounded like just my sort of thing, the review described her voice as "sexy and beguiling", so I had to get it (the record not the speakers, I was pretty skint back then and the Heybrooks were about £400 iirc).
suffice to say, she's done some great songs and has a great voice!!
It wasn't a single, but "Nobody Owns Me" on Heaven On Earth absolutely rocks! Probably my favourite track of hers. :)

Close. For me it's Revolver, The White Album and Sgt. Pepper
Being a double LP, there is, IMO, a lot rubbish 'filler' tracks on the Beatles' 'White Album'.

You list them and I'll comment (if I can be bothered ).
The average American is quite often prudish, for example the naked girl with the key in her back; the "soft machine" of the eponymous group's debut LP. Originally shown uncensored, but later issues had a bikini
crudely overprinted on her.

Pink Floyd, A Nice Pair.
US versions had the tits "taped" over. But an unexpected censorship that happened on later releases was the picture of the WR Phang dental practice. Some of the pictures on the sleeve represented well-known phrases (a fork in the road, a nice pear, a kettle of fish, etc), but this Phang picture was removed because NHS dental practices aren't allowed to advertise.
I bet if the album was reissued now the one of the levitating Japanese warrior (a Nip in the air) would also fall victim to censorship, because that's the world we live in.

There are many covers that show bare breasts; none of them I regard as being 'risque' or offensive. Pink Floyd often had oblique references to sex, such as the title Ummagumma, a local euphemism for fucking.
What I object to are covers which suggest rape or the brutal treatment of women, such as the banned cover of the Guns & Roses' LP, and other heavy metal bands. Whereas I have no problem with depictions of a couple making love: such as that shown (as a painting) on the cover of Jabula.

I.M.H.O., the only Madonna albums that stand out for me are True Blue and Ray Of Light. The latter of the two is absolutely superb!!!! The other albums are OK, I much prefer her singles more than the albums!! Only my opinion though.

Yeah I would agree with that. But the album I play the most is "Something to Remember", a compilation of her best-known more downbeat songs and ballads. Definitely worth having and you can get it really cheap.
Check out the tracklist:

What I object to are covers which suggest rape or the brutal treatment of women, such as the banned cover of the Guns & Roses' LP, and other heavy metal bands. .
''The album's original cover art was based on Robert Williams' painting Appetite for Destruction. It depicted a robotic rapist about to be punished by a metal avenger.
The band stated the original artwork was "a symbolic social statement, with the robot representing the industrial system that's raping and polluting our environment."
Rose stated his initial idea was for the cover art to be the photo of the Space Shuttle Challenger exploding that was on the cover of Time magazine in 1986, but Geffen rejected the idea, saying it was "in bad taste"

As far as I'm concerned, art is like comedy - either everything is considered sacred, or nothing is.
Some things may be offensive to some, that's tough. If it doesn't actually break any laws, then it's fine IMO.
Not aware of that one. Did a search, but didn't find anything.
Here you go Steve:

Similar to the very early Virgin Records label (the very first recording on Virgin being Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells as you probably know), but a bit more explicit.

I used to have this LP, which I gave away as, then, I didn't like it that much. Some time later I realised that was a mistake, so I replaced it a near mint copy . :)

Inside the gatefold is a photograph of a custom-built sports car, which takes to the extreme the metaphor of a sports car being a phallic extension of its driver:

Good album, especially side 2.
I got the 'Nice Price' re-issue in about 1983. It's not gatefold. Just a few years later I spotted a near mint original pressing for not a lot at all, so I got it. Quite significantly better sound quality! That woke me up to the fact that the pressing can really matter.

I'd like to look further into 'alt-80s' music, so far I've picked on Dead can dance, This Mortal coil, Cocteau twins, Soft cell, Heaven 17 (ok bit more poppy there), and a few others. Seemed to be a gap between all the post punk stuff like Magazine, The fall etc, to the mid 80s stuff.
