Colour of spring, talk talk CD, via my pioneer good, via my muse now DAC rat her better, not sure why...........
Talk Talk - great mostly underrated band; I saw them in 1981 (first album tour) with Duran Duran and they were very good !!! :) Got most of there albs - excellent band and singers voice quite distinct. Love the track "Today" - awsome!!!

I like Talk Talk an awful lot. Started off loving 'The Colours of Spring'. Then when 'Spirit of Eden and then 'Laughing Stock' came out, 'Colours of Spring' fell out of favour somewhat. Now for the moment I much prefer it again. A really great band. And no chance it seems of Mark Hollis ever recording music again.

Another great (and mostly unknown) band that was from a very short era (metal fusion) in music that was mixing metal, tribal and rock together and were strangely quite melodic in places :guitar:
SUPERB !!!!!

Very (very) nice pressing on Columbia/Sony Legacy, so I take it it's from the States although I bought it in HMV Birmingham. Almost chillingly, starkly beautiful album.
http://www.elusivedisc.com/images/uniba34980.jpg
Possibly the 'easiest' and most 'present' versions of these albums I've heard - I only really bought it to have the full 2LP version of Ella and Louis Again. I'm sure original/early vinyl will be special - but this is real nice stuff.

Got both of those albums on 180gm issue.. both superb .different press though.
I've got a 180g of the first one, and both on original Verve CDs. All are rather nice, but this seems very relaxed in its presentation.
Bit of a niche listen this one but great. Heard a track on an advert and had to check it out.

The Telefunkens I built Marco. they are my main speaker now.. the little Fanes are, for their size , extremely good too.. the teles are 10 inch full range
Are the pics in your Gallery thread - if so, which page? :)
Also, which Tannoys have you got?
Marco.
Yup. latter bit of the build from 103 to in the system in 105. tannoys are 637,s. the floorstanding trapezoidal type... not bad at all.. Brian has them at moment
Just had a wee glancette at your Gallery thread. They look great. Not surprised that they sound good too, as pretty much anything Telefunken do is superb! You can't beat the best of the oldies! ;)

Just got the hi-res downloads of the new John Mayall CD Find a Way to Care, which is out on September 4th on Forty Below Records. File I have been sent are 16/88 and sound pretty good. The record company say they will send the CD and vinyl when available, though the LP is coming out later. It is a really classic bit of Blues and a great return to his roots for JM, well worth a listen.

That's a very fine record Anto. I'd not listened to Yes much in the last 20 years. But after reading that Chris Squire had died recently I started listening again. I never liked Tales From a Topographic Ocean and anything following that, but much of the earlier stuff I'm finding is great. And yes, credit where it's due.

His mood indigo is rather good
I saw someone had posted that Ella earlier in this thread, Grant (was it you?) and I was inspired to go out and get it as Ella's Decca years are under-represented in my collection (just that wonderful GRP CD of Ella sings Gershwin and Songs in a Mellow Mood). What a wonderful LP. As it focusses on Ella having fun and the Jazz/scat side of her, I wasn't expecting to be moved. But when she does her Satchmo impersonation toward the end of Basin Street Blues, it's done with such warmth and obvious affection, I found myself in tears. Wonderful LP.
I have a couple of copies of the Sinatra - the 'Alan Dell' 1984 issue (in the big 'Capitol Years' box), the new Universal 180g version (also lovely) and half of the album on an early EMI-pressed 10". Another wonderful LP and, no matter what Beatles and Beach Boys scholars might claim, THIS is where the concept album first flourished.
Speaking of The Beatles, I'm spinning the mono White Album. Stunned by this Denon cartridge.
That looks good.
It's a marvellous album, makes me smile and (embarrassingly) sing along. It makes my dad feel close as well, for all the 14 years that may have gone by.
Yeah. I know where your at Malcolm. Yes ive probably posted that and plenty other Ella ones.. I have a few 180s of her. She is so relaxed even doing complex stuff that you cant help admiring her incredible abilities. She and Louis were great pals. Funny but i just put my denon 160 on an hr ago
I always think the supreme Ella is the songbooks, and you could spend a lifetime listening to them and still there's things to enjoy and (re)discover, but there's so much more to her than that. 'The Intimate Ella/Let No Man Write My Epitaph' is another amazing album - as much as I love Francis Albert he never left himself that musically exposed. I need to explore the later albums she made with Joe Pass, as well.
As I type 'Savoy Truffle' is playing from the White Album, and I'm reminded that Ella recorded a pretty funky version of that on one of her Reprise albums. I love left-field connections like that.

I had an Aiwa twin cassette recorder. Cost £100 back in around 1981...lasted for years till I nearly electrocuted meself trying to fix the power switch. £100 back in 81 was a fortune to me. The machine never chewed tapes and although sore on batteries went with me on camping trips. great days.

Kind of sounds to me like a follow up to Miles' Birth of the Cool (I should read the liner notes really...)
As well as the Art Pepper I picked up a copy of Meddle today (well, yesterday) - rated VG+, first pressing with the textured inner cover. I had kind of picked it up and put it down a couple of times, feeling ambivalent (have heard and enjoyed the album a few times 'digitally') while eyeing up other copies that looked nice and were two-thirds and half the price. I took the plunge on the nice one.
Oh.
My.
Goodness.
I didn't intend to play it through tonight - I only wanted to give it a test run and see how it was. Plugged my Sennheisers in, as it's late and I wanted to turn it up a little. I'm here now, mesmerised with what I've heard. Geez, I've never been one of these 'first pressing' people but this LP is incredible. And I never knew my Sennheiser's were so damn groovy.

I would be a very happy bunny if Repertoire would do their 180gm 1/2 speed remaster to this album.. (not so taken with their 2nd album, but I'd probably buy it anyways.. :D)

Billie Holiday - Music for Torching
Picked this one up for £8 on the Doxy label -- I'm rather skeptical of these labels and where they're getting their masters from for these 'public domain' albums, but this one sounds really nice on heavy, flat, quiet vinyl. You can hear the trademark Clef/Verve atmospheric mono sound - the lovely, slightly distanced horns making you feel like you can hear the walls of the studio. And Lady Day seems to be stood right in front of me in my darkened lounge. Filthy though - needs to go through an RCM. The Denon was wearing a fur coat by the end of side one.
Nice one. Bet it is good too. Quite like Billy

I'm listening to a very understated, underrated and mostly unknown album (especially in this dull, sad media & corporate controlled pop music infested culture of GB). This album was probably one of the very earliest industrial metal albums that is probably only known by the real industrial metal fans - its by a band called "Shotgun Messiah" and the album is "Violent New Breed."
Considering when this came out, (1993) at the time, there was probably only Nine Inch Nails' music that could hold a torch to this :guitar:
This album blends 80's metal with an industrial soundstage - it was simply way ahead of its time. The music was frenetic, with Tim Skolds unique punky, street sleazy vocals and the guitar work of Harry K Cody which is nothing short of brilliant, blending together to give the perfect cocktail of raw aggression and fantastic musicianship. I'm in my 50's now but, as soon as I put this album on, that feeling of being young and rebellious comes right back on tap !!!!!! :guitar:  :mental: :eyebrows:
ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC ALBUM TOTAL 5 Star !!!
15367
The only things that are comparable to this are Marilyn Manson, Nine Inch Nails and Filter.
Lets face it, you dont really get to hear much of a choice in music today as there is no choice anymore, other than sickly pop music, sickly pop music and more sickly pop music. Oh, I forgot, there's always sickly pop music or even better - The X-Factor :steam:

Loz
Loz, the Rhino reissues are worth every penny, unless you already have pristine original first pressings.
That opinion holds for the complete box (1970-1975) release a few years back though, have no idea if someone else is pressing these today?
I mean, the later box sets of vinyl are nowhere near as good... :/
(Not Rhino, and i suspect more of a straight to vinyl mastering from digital source..)
After a couple of hours of classical i needed an ear cleansing!;

What Mr Alpha ses, my Atlantic Rhino (from the box set 2008?) is gob smackingly good, I also bought the Atlantic reish from a couple of years ago (2013?) it's just not quite as good IMHO.
Both emphasise just how poor the original mastering was on the original which sounds "muddy" for want of a better term in comparison.
I've been told that there was a fair degree of discussion when the box set was first issued, with a lot of peeps disliking the remastering. Whilst I'm not an avid Genesis devotee, Foxtrot is a "desert Island disc" and I am looking for a copy of Chryme from that boxset.

Herb Alpert "Whipped Cream & Other Delights". £3 from a record fair yesterday, vinyl so thick and heavy it'd break your toe if it fell on it.

After a couple of hours of classical i needed an ear cleansing!;

OK hold on, so are both of those reissues taken from the much maligned Nick Davis mixes or from somewhere else? I have only heard the Nick Davis mixes of Selling England by the Pound of which I have a copy and which sounds pretty good overall and A Trick of the Tail which sounds bloody awful!
'Muddy' is a word I have used to describe Foxtrot and Selling England by the Pound as well Steve.

honest answer is I do not know... :) I've never checked out the who was/the story behind the original box set. from a previous conversation I was pointed towards the first box set Foxtrot by Andre (RareBird). I picked up the last Atlantic reish out of interest (It's a desert Island disc). when I was playing one after the other on the same TT I felt the 2013 lacked something..
However I can now do a direct comparison with a Garrard 401/RB300/1042 and a RP25/RB600/1042. I've tried direct comparisons with the same pressing of several albums, and to be honest the difference was so subtle I couldn't hear it. but that's a whole different can of worms inc my ears..
Sometime later this week I'll try the two reissues and come back and let you know how I get on.

Ella in London, from Spotify...
Caught on the wing on April 11th, 1974 at Ronnie Scott's in London. In mono, and kind of raw sounding (but feeling incredibly 'real') Ella's on white hot form (if not, of course, in her youthful prime by this date). I feel I need to know more about this album...

Have I missed something? Nobody talking about Rattle that Lock. No foaming at the mouth denunciations? No people vowing to play nothing but Amused to Death (bleugh! - IMHO) to purge themselves of the experience? Frankly, I'm disappointed! ;-)
I picked up a copy on vinyl from HMV Newcastle today and I'm giving it a spin now. Picked up and put down the Blu-ray version half a dozen times before I bought the vinyl. I've promised myself not to buy this one twice like I did with the Endless River. It is rather good, I feel. It is not Pink Floyd. Quite "poppy" in parts I found (as opposed to some kind of full on 'rock' experience ). Some nice instrumental sections with that awesome guitar. I like it.
