Still trying to get into both that one and 'Radio Chaos'.
Played 'Pros and Cons of Hitch-hiking' the other day - still unsure about it. Is it meant to be a concept album?

Is it worth my while acquiring a copy?

This one ("Is this the Life we really Want") seems to be widely regarded as his most musical and listenable effort. It is growing on me, but I wish I'd got it on CD - I seem to spend more time getting up to change the record than listening. It is only 55 minutes long, spread over two discs. I think I may be getting lazy and impatient in my old age...
I haven't heard Radio Kaos since the 80s, so I can't remember what it was like. But I never got round to buying it, which tells me something. I do think that both Waters and Pink Floyd were better together.

As for 'Pros and Cons of Hitch hiking', I've never heard that, though if he'd released a follow-up called 'The Pros and Cons of giving Roger Waters a Lift' I would have bought that :) Might have been funny.

I'll answer this on Adrian's behalf: Definitely! Some great songs on there, and the production (as always) is first class. I've had a copy of this since it was first released. Agree about the album art though, it's a bit grim.

Hi Barry, sorry been a bit distracted recently, I have all Steely Dans albums, IMHO one of the greats of the past 50-60 years. The amazing thing with them is that every album is wonderfully recorded and produced, and I cant think of one bad song on any album, Each album has a particular feel, but interestingly the tracks are usually varied.
In answer to you question, it a BIG YES!

When this was first released (2001 - Warp) I wasn’t at all sure, I thought it was just a mash up of old work, literally just fulfilling his Warp contract.
I now think that it absolutely typifies what he does and would put it up there amongst his best.

I got one you can have, it's pretty minty I think.
Just listening to it now (on CD), it really is such a quality album. Plus his Dylan impression on 'Flakes' always makes me laugh.
Zappa produced an enormous canon of work going through many directions. I find his 'vaudeville' period lyrically puerile, but put up with it for his superb guitar playing.
I saw him in London years ago - it was his "Titties and Beer" tour and he was excellent. A true showman.

That wasn't when he got chucked off the stage was it?
I've heard it said that you either 'get' his music or you don't, which suggests to me a kind of elitism, which i don't agree with. It's perfectly possible to like some but not all of his output. I for one really like his 'Hot rats' albums, but then cannot get on with "Weasels ripped my flesh". I can't even say I prefer his earlier or later stuff, it's quite random.
In interview, Billy Bob Thornton described his guitar playing as sounding like razor blades, and I know what he means. So I thought I would love his box set "Shut up 'n' Play Yer Guitar". I didn't. No way would I sit through all three discs. Too much of a good thing perhaps.
My favourite would have to be "Overnite Sensation" (indeed the song "Montana" is where my username comes from) :) Might put that on after this, which I'm currently playing:

I looked it up and apparently it's not Zappa who does Dylan, it's Adrian Belew.
I reckon it's Zappa who interjects with 'Wanna buy some mandies, Bob?'
'Mandies' are MDMA tabs. I wondered about that for years before the internet came along and gave the answer.

Agree Beefheart can be very self indulgent. His 'Trout Mask Replica' is, to my ears, unlistenable. Yet it appears in the top most influential discs of the last fifty years or so. Goodness knows why - I have a theory that no-one understands it but critics are too afraid to admit it. One theory is that Beefheart came in the studio to record it wearing a new hat that he refused to remove so as to use headphones. This meant he couldn't hear what the others were playing in their own booths, so was out of time with all of them. I think this theory far-fetched. The fact the record was produced by Zappa, who also was a champion of the equally unlistenable Wild Man Fisher, I think has a lot to do with it.
That said I do like his debut album 'Safe as Milk' and 'Clear Spot'. There are a couple of others I have which aren't too bad.

Yeah, I'd assumed it was Frank...
Your internet's broke Mart, Mandies (a nickname for Mandrax) was a powerful sedative, also called Quaaludes in the US. Deadly dangerous and super addictive, I think they stopped being made years ago.
I know, nobody likes a smartarse. But Bob Dylan on MDMA, that would be quite a combination :D

Ah, "Hot Rats, part II". :)
(See if you can listen to 'Chunga's Revenge' before Anita tells you to "turn that awful music off". ;) )
Would if I could but I can't, I haven't got that one  Currently I only have about a dozen albums of his. I gave up attempting his entire discography many years ago, when it numbered about 50 - God knows how many there'll be by now.

And there I was thinking I knew that for all those years.
Internet does link 'mandy' with MDMA but Mandrax does make more sense.

Never heard that, so I can't really comment :-) but I do have lots and lots of albums from the 70's punk era and the UK82 punk era so I may have heard it but not remembered; although it does look more of a modern kind of cover so I may not have heard it. The cover looks like a cross between a Killing Joke cover. a Crass cover and something off a movie cover

You are right about the cover and Crass do actually appear on the Album. The title of the Album is "Cease & Resist - Sonic Subversion & Anarcho Punk In The UK 1979-86", so gives an idea.

Porcupine Tree especially; I do notice from a lot of your recent posts that you have a very broad spectrum of music/bands etc., I like that, as I only notice a few who have tastes in music (take a look at my posts over the past year or more, you'll see what I mean) which are similar to mine. No Barry, it was just a wind-up for Loz - I do think that my tastes are quite varied, and does include Norah Jones. It won't be going onto my 'free to a good' home list, which at the moment only comprises titles by Beverly Knight, Jamiroqui and Kings of Leon.
The most recent CD I played was Massive Attack, and then it was a few Frank Zappa LPs, and now this - I think that is quite varied :)

Wouldn't recognise Iggy Pop from that sleeve. Like Keith Richards he's now so wrinkled he can screw his hat on, though he's nowhere near as good a guitarist as Keith.

I agree. I would have to say though, Iggy as a frontman would (in his younger years) take some beating............. to put it mildly, he was out there!!! He was (in his younger years) brilliant !!!! I wouldn't imagine he was still as "out there" now as he was then and, if he is, I'm sure it wouldn't be to the same degree !!!

Nothing about that record ever made any sense.
I got a minty vinyl copy, disc and sleeve, many years ago. It's minty because it's not a record anyone plays very often. Or in many cases, more than once.

The only Beefheart record I have is 'Safe as Milk' which I bought about 3 years ago to see if I liked it. I've only played it a couple of times - it's ok, but there's always other records I'd rather be playing.
'Safe as Milk' is a good, if challenging debut. Some think that Beefheart parodied the Blues (Howling Wolf in particular) but I believe he was honouring the Blues as the bedrock of rock and roll.
If you want an easier listen, then try 'Clear Spot'. :)

A few years ago I saw some OGWT archive footage of him doing 'Upon the My O My' and really liked it, but was told by someone that the album it came from (Unconditionally Guaranteed) wasn't great, so I didn't bother and got Safe as Milk instead.
I'll give Clear Spot a go if I see it knocking about at the right price. On CD this time though.

Ok, I've played some more of Japan's 'Oil on Canvas' LP, and I agree with you Loz, it does lack a little bit at the top end, but we should bear in mind that it is over 40 years old, and live. I'm not a fan of live recordings from the last century, they tend to be a bit flat and lacking dynamics compared to more recent efforts imo. All things considered it's pretty good :)

No, CD. But it was only £1.50, haven't seen it that cheap anywhere.
Anyway, Orbital (as well as Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, The Orb, Underworld, Leftfield, and many other electronica) I always bought on CD, as we tended to play them 'after hours', when we were usually too wasted to be trusted with vinyl
The only vinyl I have of that ilk is 'Mezzanine' and 'Exit Planet Dust', and only because they were birthday presents...

As is usual we finish with vinyl and this original pressing release from 1983 and this Englishmans debut solo album the first of 23. His career includes performing live with Pink Floyd and being a member of Thin Lizzy, albeit for a short while, co-writing the Chinatown and Renegade albums.

This compilation should be in every music collection it contains some of the great work of songwriters such as Noel Brazil and Jimmy McCarthy.

Lastly vinyl and this 1982 original release pressing, an album bought for one track, a cover version of the 1963 release by the Searchers of Love Potion No.9 !
As to when this album last hit the platter, I suspect that could well have been more than 30 years ago !
Nevertheless this band released thirteen studio albums across five decades and are still performing live.

Exciting times for music then, that’s for sure.
Mind you, it’s always been the way I guess. There’s a few modern day equivalents spring to mind - Akala, Lowkey, Dead Prez, Dave, Immortal Technique, Mos Def, poor Righteous Teachers, Tom MacDonald etc.
