yes some would say that, where I struggle is, the additional cost for “audiophile records” coming from the States, currently debating on a couple purchases and the cheapest way to obtain them.

Go on holiday in USA where they sell MOFI, possibly NY, have a wonderful time, buy a wheelie take on suitcase out there, and purchase what you want. You should be able to load it up with about 15-20 records based on weight. Saving yourself around £250 to £300. Hopefully you'd just walk through customs this side, if not you could face a 20% plus bill on the original cost.:D

Adrian, trust me I have thought about doing that, we used to visit South Carolina every year, my sister in-law lives there (we haven’t been for a couple of years for reasons I wont go into here), our niece came over last year for a visit and brought several albums with her that I had delivered to my sister in-law. The other charge I have to work out is the sales tax, I was charged sales tax on one order but not another.

The 1987 version is perfectly good Steve. I wouldn't pay too much attention to my saying it sounded better - I wasn't listening attentively and could well have imagined it.

The Anniversary edition does however come in fancy packaging; looking like a little book, and includes an extra track.

I listened to a Linn set up once in the 90's , and that was enough to put me in the none Linn camp, I was surprised at the time as I expected it to sound more real, it wasn't awful, the frequency balance just sounded odd to my ears, maybe my expectations were too high or the listening venue(dealers) was crap.

I only came across the Blue Nile in 1998 when Sue purchased me a pair of KEF 3.2 series IIs for my 40th, they sold CDs in the Guildford HiFi shop, I purchased 'A Walk Across The Rooftops' as it looked interesting. I only got there later albums about 10 years on. All of them are regularly given a spin

My copy is the Reverence/Irreverence CD which I purchased when working in Holland, a Swiss programming colleague at Hewlett Packard put his headphones on my head and said you have to hear this. I went and got a copy the next day. Reverence has remained a favourite in my collection ever since, and often gets played in the car. Strangely I have never purchased any of there subsequent albums, there is quite a few to choose from but where to start?

If you were living up here there was no escaping the Blue Nile, they were played everywhere. Saying that I have played the albums regularly over the years.

Besides the aforementioned 'Reverence', I have Outrospective, Sunday 8pm, To All New Arrivals, No Roots, The Dance Never Ends, and all of them are good imo. I imagine most people would rate Reverence top, followed by No Roots, but To All New Arrivals is the one I go back to the most.

There'll be one or two later albums which I'm not familiar with so cannot comment. There are also a shitload of 'best ofs' and a couple of remix albums knocking about.

Well, the Faithless album I just played reminded me why it was the last album of theirs I bought. Only 2 tracks on it I really liked, both with Dido on vocals. Not a massive fan of Dido, I don't have any of her albums, but I've always thought her voice suited Faithless' music perfectly.

Anyway, thought I'd give this one a play, another that doesn't get too many outings. Straight away, yes, this is more like it :)

I think it is the dynamic range in dB - so logarithmic.

Doesn't matter really, just get the version with the highest numbers. It's a pretty good buying guide as long as you're not into obscure music, I've been using it for years.

Next up an all time classic album whose title track is synonymous with the now legendary singer songwriter. This his second studio album released in 1973, the album emerged from legal difficulties with Joel's former label, Family Productions and ultimately became his first breakthrough album.

The title track, a fictionalised retelling of Joel's experiences with people he met as a lounge singer in Los Angeles, peaked at No. 25 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and No. 4 on the Adult Contemporary singles chart. "Travelin' Prayer" and "Worse Comes to Worst" peaked at No. 77 and 80 on the Hot 100, respectively, while the album itself peaked at No. 27 on the US Billboard 200. The album was certified gold by the RIAA in 1975, but Joel received only $8,000 in royalties.

Last and a return to vinyl and the seventh studio album from this English “Progressive Rock” group. When released in 1976 it didn’t meet with much critical acclaim in fact, in the UK music magazine Sounds, Tim Lott expressed his frustration with the album, saying, "Unfortunately, Octoberon is no major departure from [their] disappointing formula. But despite that, there are some fine, imaginative moments which point once again to the never-fulfilled potential.”

Well I quite like it ! This is the embossed cover art version, the album was recorded at the famous Strawberry studios in Stockport, The facility was originally called Inter-City Studios and located above a music store in the town centre. In early 1968 it was bought by Peter Tattersall, a former road manager for Billy J. Kramer and the Dakotas. Tattersall invited Eric Stewart, then lead guitarist and singer of the Mindbenders and later a member of 10cc, to join him as a partner in July 1968. The pair moved to larger premises at No. 3 Waterloo Road in October, with Stewart choosing the studio's new name in honour of his favourite song by the Beatles, "Strawberry Fields Forever".

The Sara’s were the only ones that I could listen to, my friend had a full Linn LP12/Ittok/Troika, multiple Naim NAP 250’s with active crossovers and Isobarik system, complete with concrete sub floor pillars for the Isobarik’s and Sound Organisation equipment racks, it was a dynamic assault on your ears !!!

This was the first album I got of hers, in 1999 or 2000 and its great. I now own 5 others from her, the 1st 'Stepping Out' is stunning, as is the most recent 'This Dream of You' (2020), I read that on this album her aim was to have her voice mic'd up to get all the detail and inflection from her singing onto the record, and it certainly does, well worth getting IMHO.

Just played this. I'll change the adjective from 'miserable' to 'sombre'. Not quite as bad as I remember, though if you have ever visited Portishead, you might understand why they sound the way they do.

I forewarned my partner that she might not like what I was about to play, and if she really disliked it, I would play something different. Not expecting to get past track 3, I was surprised when she said it "wasn't too bad - I quite like it"!

'Album of the Month' fizzled out because we got tired of finding those who had volunteered to come up with a title and to write a little about wny they had chosen it, had done nothing when it was time to post. 90dB is the difference between noise floor and the maximum possible amplitude, the dB number on the database is the difference between the quietest and loudest sound on the recording - so 16dB is a high dynamic range.

At least I think that's what it shows.

I came across this artist due to a recent post on TAS re www.whathifi.com/features/best-instrumental-test-tracks-to-give-your-hi-fi-a-vocal-free-workout and had a listen to several of his tracks and was rather taken aback by the diversity of them and the quality of the recordings. If you are into a mix of Electronic with traditional instruments which are used in what I would describe as soundscapes then this is well worth a listen, his earlier stuff is good as well.

This was the first album I got of hers, in 1999 or 2000 and its great. I now own 5 others from her, the 1st 'Stepping Out' is stunning, as is the most recent 'This Dream of You' (2020), I read that on this album her aim was to have her voice mic'd up to get all the detail and inflection from her singing onto the record, and it certainly does, well worth getting IMHO.

I’m a huge fan saw her live first at the Wigan Jazz Festival before anyone knew who she was and before Michael Parkinson championed her on his radio 2 show, then again at Bridgewater Hall Manchester in 2002 and then lastly at the Royal Albert Hall in 2017. I have 15 of her albums and they are all great except The Girl In The Other Room and Wallflower which are just not her at her best !

Yes their three part harmonies and subtle interplay between instruments isn't always obvious to the casual listener, but on the night, in the venue, with the crowd, it would be hard not to get caught up in it all. In other words "you had to be there" :D Was it really 3 minutes 19 seconds? I lost track of time :)

I have a feeling that when I first played this I wouldn't have got past track 2, which sounds like everything that was bad about the 80s. Might work well in an aerobics studio with leotards and multi-coloured leggings. But this time I'm going to power through, see if things get better.

'Album of the Month' fizzled out because we got tired of finding those who had volunteered to come up with a title and to write a little about wny they had chosen it, had done nothing when it was time to post. It was originally run by Alex of this parish, then later by The Grand Wazoo, and eventually by myself. When there was nothing forthcomming, I/we had to come up with something ourselves; which somewhat limited the choices.

If you like, you would be more than welcome to resurrect the thread and run with it. Interested?

On a fishing holiday round Scotland in 1975 I took my newly-bought Prinzsound cassette player (£21 from Dixons) and the only tapes we had were Temptations' greatest hits, Autobahn, and Tubular Bells. By the end of the holiday and having shelled out fortunes on batteries, we were positively sick of Tubular Bells.

Even though I do have it on vinyl I think I've only played it once.

But overall his output over the 50 years is pretty varied, so there is probably something there for everyone, as well as a lot of cack. But this (Return to Ommadawn) is my favourite. Proper chilled.

I think it has stood the test of time. And I think I'll seek out an earlier one of theirs ("Introduce Yourself") which was before Mike Patton took on lead singer job. I seem to remember liking it, the track "We Care a Lot" is a belter :) "It's a dirty job but someone's gotta do it"

Of the two I prefer 'Revolver' over 'Abbey Road' - when I'm in London and have to travel down Abbey Road, I'm always amused to see visitors outside the studios, even trying to have photos taken of them crossing the road, mimicking the LP cover.

I can't be doing with albums that have unbearable songs on them, unless it's the last song and you can just switch it off before it starts and call that the end.

Strange really, a couple of years ago I might have frowned on 'best ofs', then I found that not only do I have a couple of dozen, but also play them quite often :doh: The one thing about them though that I do dislike, is that so often the tracks are shortened 'radio edits'. No need! :steam: Bowie is one of the worst offenders in this.

I will just mention to anyone considering buying this on CD: there are two almost identical versions of this CD, this one (which is the same as the old LP's tracklisting), and another which will offer a couple more songs but is missing The Green Manalishi, Man of the World, and Oh Well (pts 1 and 2). So if those songs matter then the one pictured above is the one to go for.

I will just mention to anyone considering buying this on CD: there are two almost identical versions of this CD, this one (which is the same as the old LP's tracklisting), and another which will offer a couple more songs but is missing The Green Manalishi, Man of the World, and Oh Well (pts 1 and 2). So if those songs matter then the one pictured above is the one to go for.

Last up and vinyl and this original release pressing of the album which was to be a game changer for this English & American rock band. Formed in New York City in 1976 by guitarist Mick Jones, vocalist Lou Gramm, drummer Dennis Elliott, keyboardist Al Greenwood, bassist Ed Gagliardi and multi-instrumentalist Ian McDonald, the last of whom was also a founding member of King Crimson. Foreigner is one of the world's best-selling bands of all time, with worldwide sales of more than 80 million records,including 37.5 million in the US alone!

The album's name signifies that it is the band's fourth studio album and also the fact that the band's membership had reduced from six to four members. Musically, it showed Foreigner shifting from hard rock to more accessible mainstream rock and pop music.

The album was a success worldwide, holding the #1 position on the Billboard album chart for a total of 10 weeks. It eventually sold over six million copies in the U.S. alone.

What a voice! Yes, at the time of her other album's release (Seasons of my Soul) she was also likened to Dusty Springfield. Not sure about that, but Karen Carpenter definitely. Not played either for some time, I will remedy that later.

I bought it a couple of years ago, drawn by the odd sleeve art, then immediately ignored it. Not sure about this - pretty much just him and his acoustic guitar, and no doubt he is quite competent, but it is a bit samey. Should improve with repeated listens, but really life's too short.

I have it, again picked up in a charity shop. In fact I might have two titles by Gonzalez (why do think with a name like that he would be Swedish?), and neither are, as you say, an immediate hit. In fact I would go as far as saying if doesn’t grab you, there is no compelling reason to persevere with it.

80's was pretty good for music, Dire Straits, The Blue Nile, Frankie Goes to Hollywood, Echo and the Bunneymen, U2, The Comsat Angels, The Cure, Howard Jones, OMD, Yazoo, Marillion, The The, and Kate Bush to name a few and so on. The 90's was a bit questionable, although there were some exceptions, Red Hot Chilli Peppers(became more mainstream), Faithless, Mary Black released some great albums in the 90's, I never got into Oasis and still don't like their output much, Blur were good.

U2 recorded the album from September–November 1982 at Windmill Lane Studios with Lillywhite producing, the group's third consecutive album made at the studio with the producer. While the central themes of U2's previous albums Boy and October were adolescence and spirituality, respectively,War focused on both the physical aspects of warfare, and the emotional after-effects.Musically, it is also harsher than the band's previous releases. The album has been described as the record where the band "turned pacifism itself into a crusade".

War was a commercial success, knocking Michael Jackson's Thriller from the top of the UK charts to become U2's first number-one album. Macca, you wouldn't have cared for the trackies back then, I had an Adidas track suit which was brown/beige, and the tapering trackie pants had stirrups that went under your feet so the legs didn't ride up.

The only reason we were able to bag off looking like that was that the girls looked just as bad.

I think you'd go a long way to find someone who has worked harder to promote racial harmony in this country, via his Two Tone record label (and thanks to Special AKA'a "Free Nelson Mandela", abroad too).

The last I'd seen of him was a performance on TV (might have been Jools Holland) fronting his Spatial AKA Orchestra, which looked interesting, but as far as I know didn't make it onto an album.

As noted in the other thread, I've now got a good copy. I don't think I would buy an expensive LP from speedyhen (marketplace seller on Amazon) but at £7 it is worth the risk. I think Willbewill was happy enough despite some surface marks. Sound quality is very good. I am familiar with a few tracks but the album largely passed me by. I had the Beano album back in the day (I actually bought it late 70's) but never picked this one up, which was a mistake. I was a bit of Clapton fan boy at the time which would probably explain it.

Apparently he was aiming to produce the saddest record ever made...

A quick read up, and I see Eric co-produced with Simon Climie (of Climie Fisher fame, "Love Changes Everything", I think I have an album of theirs here, belonged to my ex). One critic described listening to the album as being "like watching a film you admire, but wish would hurry up and end", and was also widely criticised by others, though it was one of his most commercially successful albums :)

It's one of my favourite PF albums. In some ways I prefer it to DSOTM (:eek: :sofa:). And Side one is my favourite of the two. I saw PF perform AHM at the Bath Festival in '72 (?), complete with a military brass band.

On Side two I used to get annoyed with the last track: 'Alan's Psychedelic Breakfast'; especially the end with the dripping tap. This is cut into the locked groove, and on my copy there was no tell-tale 'click' where the spiral groove joins the locked groove. This usually meant that often after dozing off (after a late night session, complete with an accompanying 'splif') I would awaken to the sound of the wretched tap dripping!
