For a long time now I've been meaning to listen to something by Richard Hawley. Picked up a CD by him a few months ago
Only played it once so far, he has a great voice, with a few different styles of music on the album.

How many LPs do you have? I have thought about doing the Discogs thing but I'm way too lazy. I doubt I will ever sell any of them, anyway, so the value is moot.
Looks like about 1300 LPs, to be honest I used to have a spreadsheet with them all listed but its a bit out of date, so I have about 300 listed so far on Discogs, I have around 500 CDs as well plus a couple of hundred 7in and 12 in singles which were packed away before.

Would have been more but I sold quite a few, now that I have them in some sort of order there will be a bit of clear out, my tastes have changed quite a bit over the years.

I don't think there's anything from the first 30 or so albums I bought as a teenager that I don't still listen to fairly often. But I do listen to a lot of other stuff I wouldn't have done back then, like jazz, or Sinatra - or Kylie.

It’s over 50 years since I was a teenager, a few albums from that time survived but not many, I would never have listened to jazz back then but I have few jazz albums now, no Kylie though.
I still listen to stuff I bought as a teenager. ;)

Next up was Paloma Faith. Always opinionated, but at least she could sing and was a bit 'different' to her contemporaries. Sadly I found her performance was spoilt by her sexual-political rants. The only saving grace, for me, was her singing a song by the late, great Amy Winehouse.
Finally: Steel Pulse - good solid Jamacian regge from this Birmingham band. Excellent - and more than made up for Paloma Faith's performance.

I saw a bit of Glastonbury over the weekend.
Sugababes - did some great pop songs in their day. Mutya and Keisha were ok, but the redhead (can't remember her name) was having a shocker - every other note she sang was off, made me think her headset was faulty and she couldn't hear herself. Or maybe she was just crap.
Jessie Ware - I do quite like her and I've been considering buying an album but haven't yet. After hearing her on Saturday I will be buying it as soon as I get back off me jollies :) Good set, and she's just the right side of barking mad.
Orbital - really looked forward to this as it is exactly 30 years since I saw them there and was the highlight of the festival for me. And this one didn't disappoint. Concentrated on their earlier "classics", and that's fine by me.
I'll catch up on some more on iPlayer, especially Steel Pulse :)

I couldn't tell you, not really into Rick Astley :lol:.
As for Glastonbury well their were a couple of nice surprises for me - first off, The Psychedelic Porn Crumpets were on and I didn't know until someone told me; I watched em and they were fkn superb!!! Secondly, IDLES were on and I watched their set and again, full of energy........... superb!!! Lastly, Coldplay......... just brilliant!!!! I also watched Avril Lavigne's set and to be fair she could still do it live - pretty good. I fell to sleep watching Shania Twain as she definitely COULDN'T DO IT ANYMORE!!! Cindi Lauper was SIMPLY ATROCIOUS!!!!! I can't stand today's mainstream "POP" acts (SZA, DUA LIPA etc) and all that kind of 5h1t so, I wont bother even trying to give an opinion.
Listened to this Monday evening, for some reason I didn't get around to posting yesterday.

So first up this 2014 release from Swedish sisters Johanna and Klara Sφderberg, recorded at ARC (Omaha Nebraska) and produced by Mike Mogis (Bright Eyes).
This is thier third of five studio albums and probably the most well known in the UK due to the tracks " My Silver Lining " and " Master Pretender " the latter being a regular radio playlist album track and the former the "single" playlist track.

Next one of my all time favourite eccentric English rockers. Known for his gritty, bluesy voice and dynamic stage performances that featured expressive body movements. Following his death in December 2014, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, were among those who paid tribute to the singer, while Cocker's agent, Barrie Marshall, said that Cocker was "without doubt the greatest rock/soul singer ever to come out of Britain".
This album from 1989 is his twelfth studio album from twenty two studio albums spanning six decades. The album features the well know "When the Nigh Comes" the song is also notable because it was written by Bryan Adams, Jim Vallance and Diane Warren. In addition, the former plays rhythm guitar on the song. Other notable songs on the album include a cover of "One Night" (here as "One Night of Sin"), a #1 hit by Elvis Presley from 1958, and "I'm Your Man" by Leonard Cohen. The album also features "Another Mind Gone", which was the first album track in thirteen years to be co-written by Cocker.

Lastly, my morning session ends with vinyl and this original release pressing from 1984, this was the second (and final) "reunion" album and their eleventh studio album.
The album is highly regarded for its excellent sound as it was recorded Live at A&M Records "Charlie Chaplin" Soundstage Hollywood California and engineered by Alan Sides It is an early digital recording (dating from December 1982) and was the first Spirit album to be released on CD, appearing in that format from Mercury Records in West Germany in 1984 (consequently, it is also one of the best sounding early CD releases from a rock band), the original CD is in fact incredibly rare !

Hi Barry, no its a double album of previously unreleased versions, and its highly recommended with really good notes on each track . Also mastered by Chris Bellman , great sound.

Yes. 'The Royal Scam' was the last of their ugly covers. You could say that 'Countdown To Ecstasy' is more weird than ugly I suppose.

Mine also, although not heard anything he's done since that.
I say "probably" because many of Dylan's recordings are so good, it is difficult to choose what you regard as his most enjoyable.
For example 'Blonde on Blonde' is a viable contender for favourite IMO.
(There are 44 titles of his in my collection.)

I will too. I have a couple of their albums besides 'Lifeforms', ie 'ISDN' and 'Dead Cities', and they're all worth a try especially as their CDs can be picked up pretty cheap :) I did used to have 'Lifeforms' video on VHS, which at the time looked pretty out there, but will look very basic by today's standards, not much better than Dire Straits 'Money for Nothing' video.

Yes, absolutely right but, I do like a lot of ambient and trance music. :thumbsup: I'm not just a one trick pony, (as I've often said in a lot of my posts) my music tastes are really vast and cover an extremely wide spectrum. I know I'm in my 60's but, believe me, in my head (I think) :lol: I'm still young/ish having been a big music fan since I first heard "Space Oddity" and "Life On Mars" by Bowie!!! I still can't stand todays mainstream chart music though - it's utterly SHITE!!!!!!! :thumbsup:

It might be described as being the "Deluxe edition", but as far as I'm concerned the packaging is a wasteful extravagance. Having a near A5 size it is almost impossible to file it with those Cds packaged in the usual jewel cases.

These three albums were produced with what were called "The Compass Point All-stars", which included Sly Dunbar on drums and Robbie Shakespeare performing bass duties. Produced by Island's Chris Blackwell, they have a sound that is very different to the Trevor Horn-produced "Slave to the Rhythm".
The album I was playing ("Hurricane") sees the return of Sly and Robbie, and with it some of the flavour of her older releases, but it's a patchy affair imo, by turns running out of steam, getting a second wind, then losing momentum again. I actually prefer the downtempo, more introspective songs on here, where she takes a break from telling us how scary she is.

I've never been a fan of The Moody Blues. Probably because of the heavy use of a Mellotron, the sound of which I dislike intensely (Yes, I know other groups have used it, such as The Beatles, Pink Floyd etc., but it appears to be more invasive with the Moody Blues). And none of their LPs have impressed me - to the contrary, finding the lyrics pretentious nonesense.
Anyway I came across this double CD of them playing live at the BBC, and I thought I would give it a go. Sadly it did nothing to change my mind, though 'Knights in White Satin' is still the only track I like.

Well, I would describe it as typical late 60's psychedelia reminiscent of Beatles, Stones and Floydish in parts, but being XTC the playing and execution is quite stunning, and in parts somewhat tongue in cheek which goes along with XTC territory, I am quite tempted to get 25 O'Clock album that was release before it.
Well worth a punt IMHO

So this morning I had only this album in mind, usually by the time I get to the shelves of albums I have pretty much decided on the three or so albums for an early morning session before work. So first up this album from 1983 and one of only three of his twenty six studio albums I own, you will have no trouble guessing at least one of the other two !
The opening track is full of random sounds which now includes skipping yes the disc now has some horrible brown spots. So another replacement required for the medium proclaimed as perfect sound for ever !

Next up an old favourite, my live introduction to this great band was when Phil had taken on the role of front man and this was his first album as lead vocal and a fine job too ! Dont get me wrong I am a huge Gabriel fan, both with Genesis and as a solo artist, but Trick shows the direction the band was moving in and the rest is, as they say, history!

Just arrived this afternoon, The Platinum Pleasure Edition. Which is to say it has a bonus disc, which for a change isn't just made up of second-rate remixes of CD1. This was actually cheaper brand new than the used copies of the bog basic CD, so why wouldn't you? Because it's all cack that's why.
Actually I'm being a bit unfair, it really isn't cack - it's just that as I get older I have less patience for songs that don't immediately impress. And I do think there is some quality here. Also I thought her Glastonbury set was really good, I'd pay to go see her.

In 1990, Eric Clapton performed 18 nights at one of his favorite venues - the famous Royal Albert Hall in London. During the 18 run of shows Clapton performed with three different line-ups: a rock band, a blues band, and an orchestra. Eric returned to the same venue in 1991 with the same three line -ups and played a further 24 shows. The huge undertaking of rehearsing for performances of three distinctly different genres was made even more challenging by the line-up for the rock shows varying from 4, 9 or 13 band members.
This the 3 lp rock show, Barry, on Rhino issued in 2023, only listened to the first 2 sides so far.

This is the second of my two compilations, which was released in 2000 and features remastered versions of some of her most iconic songs.

Next up, a band that despite as the names suggests are not all Americans !
America are a British-American rock band formed in London in 1970 by US artists Dewey Bunnell (was born in England), Dan Peek, and Gerry Beckley. The trio met as sons of US Air Force personnel stationed in London, where they began performing live. Achieving significant popularity in the 1970s, the trio was famous for its close vocal harmonies and light acoustic folk rock sound. The band released a string of hit albums and singles, many of which found airplay on pop/soft rock stations.
This album, however, is from 1994 and their 13th studio album and features just Dewey and Gerry, Dan Peek having left in 1977.

One of my friends from school, nickname Slim, got put forward for the Blockhead competition at the time, I think run by the NME, it involved sending in a suitable photo. Clive(Slim) meet the band and saw them onstage, and as he was a very good keyboard player he was invited to play on a couple of numbers, and actually ended up doing some professional work with them when he went up to London.

My copy is an early vinyl release and does not include Sex & Drugs & Rock 'n' roll. According to Wikipedia, some early reissues included it but it wasn't credited on the label or sleeve :mental: There is a recent-ish reissue (as a double album) knocking about that includes it in a Live in Paris 2nd disc.
So much for the vinyl.
Early CDs don't include it either, though some later issues do. I think I will seek one out, as my vinyl album is rather tired these days, and as you say, that track really is essential.

Well unusually I am listening early again this morning and starting with this the second of five soundtrack albums over a ten year period for the TV series Ally McBeal.
With nine studio albums, five soundtrack albums and three live albums she has sold over 12 million albums and won two Golden Globes, two Emmys, and two Screen Actors Guild awards. She is best known for her work as the music producer on the television series Ally McBeal; she produced more than 500 songs for the show and its guest artists, which included Sting, Robert Downey Jr., Jon Bon Jovi, Al Green, and many more. So my third early morning listening session of the week which is somewhat of a rarity. I was drawn to this album the moment I slid the doors back on the storage unit which hides everything on the printed page, vinyl, cd and dvd !
This is the 7th studio album it was released in 1980 the recording process and subsequent mixing was fraught with issues for all involved. Mark Knopfler who played guitar on the track Time out of Mind described the session as long and gruelling ! During recording Becker was hit by a car when walking back from a bar to his apartment in the Upper West Side Side which put him in hospital and a six month recovery due to secondary infections. Once it was completed, there was a three-way legal battle between MCA, Warner Bros., and Steely Dan over the rights to release it. After the album was released, jazz pianist Keith Jarrett sued Walter Becker and Donald Fagen for copyright infringement, claiming the title track plagiarized "'Long As You Know You're Living Yours" from his 1974 album Belonging, and he was given a co-writing credit. Steely Dan did not release another studio album until Two Against Nature, nearly 20 years later !

Admittedly she is somewhat tarred by the commercial duets ! However, The Hunter and Famous Blue Raincoat albums are absolutely worth every penny and demonstrate what a great vocalist and recording artist she truly is.

I've never heard Tubular Bells 2, so cannot comment. This (3) has similarities to the original, but the sounds and beats are more on a par with much of the dance electronica of the 90s/noughties. A nice enough listen, but I wouldn't be paying full price for it. This was a £1 car boot jobbie.

So this morning we forgo the usual two cd albums and one vinyl album for this retrospective cd box set from one of my top three male American singer songwriters, as for the other two one is definitely Billy Joel the third is a state of constant flux !
The three-disc box-set was designed and edited by Simon himself and includes only three previously unreleased tracks: "Thelma" (which was left off The Rhythm of the Saints); the original demo version of "Bridge over Troubled Water"; and a live rendition of "Still Crazy After All These Years". Noteworthy omissions from the compilation are "Homeward Bound" and "I Am a Rock", which seems odd when thee are alternate versions to Bridge Over Troubled Water and the Sound of Silence.

I knew of The Blue Nile but knew nothing about them. So I've now got Alexa educating me :) First song she's put on is called "High" from a 2004 album of the same name, according to Shazam. Look at me, embracing technology!
Next one is called "Because of Toledo" from the same album. Not sure about this, but I'll keep going, perhaps I'll prefer their earlier stuff.

The Scottish band The Blue Nile has enjoyed a mystique contrived by its inaccessibility and the infrequency of its recordings, but it has also made a series of critically acclaimed discs. The group was formed by three Glasgow natives who had graduated from university there: singer/songwriter/guitarist Paul Buchanan, bassist Robert Bell, and keyboardist Paul Joseph Moore. (Engineer Callum Malcolm and drummer Nigel Thomas have worked with the trio consistently, to the point of being considered secondary bandmembers.)
The Blue Nile is the title of Alan Moorehead's 1962 sequel to The White Nile, the two books making up a history of the Nile River. They recorded their own single, "I Love This Life," which was distributed by Robert Stigwood's RSO Records just before the company closed its doors. They were then signed by Linn Products, which released their debut album, A Walk Across the Rooftops, in 1984.
Only the 4 albums plus a couple of solo albums, over the years, although the band did reissue all 4 albums on their own label a few months ago, the original releases are all quite expensive to pick up.
