I had to look this one up - it looks like a best-of, with bonus DVD. Do you not already have all these tracks? I bet you have :)
Heard a song from this on the radio today, so thought I'd give it a spin:

Yes, but on this album, the songs are done in a different way - remixed and they blend into eachother with strange sound effects; I really like this album - perhaps give it a spin to see if you like it on spotify if it's there or Tidal etc. I liked it that much, I've just bought the CD/DVD version off ebay for £3.00 with free post from Music Magpie. Their is one left I think so be quick if you want it before someone else sees it. :)

Wasn't that a song by Desmond Dekker?
:D A great way to learn something, I'll remember that! So thanks Barry :) And I really shouldn't be describing the Angel Gabriel as a "bird" In fact if she came up to me in a bar I'd probably run away.

Archangel Gabriel is a bloke so probably for the best.
I never knew the cover was a painting of the Annunciation either. Always assumed it was just the result of too much acid.

I'd always assumed it was the result of just the right amount of acid :) So Gabriel is a bloke? Not really bloke-shaped is he. But in a world where bongos are a viable form of transport anything's possible.
Anyway, I've learned some stuff tonight, which is nice. And in the morning I'm going to google Annunciation, unless I get distracted and forget.

Where do you file this? Mine is filed under "Jazz", but it's not obvious where it should go.
I have this filed under 'S' in my general section for two reasons, firstly I have a few of his records, not all of which are Jazz, so they are all together. Also, there is so much Jazz infused Funk, Prog, Blues etc. where do you draw the line ? For me, I keep my separate Jazz section for trad, and anything else, say Sun Ra, John McLaughlin etc. goes in with everything else.

Well I only have the one record by him, but I know he wrote a lot of music for films.
Yes, the strict filing of music by genre can sometimes prove to be difficult. John Martyn is one such example. His first few albums were obviously acoustic and electric folk. Then when he teamed up with Danny Thompson his work moved towards Jazz (especially when Martyn would deliberately 'slur' the lyrics; turning his voice into an instrument). After that, with his later albums, he became much more pop (a period of his that I never liked).

Another good one, though maybe not his best.

Well I quite liked the live Nina Simone CD I played the other day (ashamed to say it had languished on my shelf unplayed since buying it), so I was on the lookout for more at this morning's car boot. And came across this:
https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/51tGVwgqpZL._AC_.jpg
I really wanted to hear her version of "Wild is the Wind" (included here), and I have to say I prefer it to Bowie's version. Shame about all the sibilance on her voice though. Oh well you can't have everything.
Also at the car boot I picked up a CD copy of Lou Reed's Transformer, as I wasn't sure if I already had it. Turns out I have  So if anyone out there wants a free copy of this, look no further :) I don't have enough shelf space to be hanging on to duplicates.

It's not something I've thought about, but I'd say easily half of my albums are female artists. I suppose I just prefer mostly female vocals, at least ones from this century. My 60s/70s/80s stuff is probably male-dominated, y'know, Bowie, Roxy, Floyd, Hendrix, Steely Dan to name a few :)
Anita will be leaving the house shortly for an hour or two, so I'll find something proper blokey, just for you :) (that could be the first two lines of a song for a blokey band, like Erasure) :eyebrows:

Sadly I found the Johnson - Daltrey collaboration disappointing and haven't played it since. Perhaps I should give it a second chance.
Yes, when I first played it (can't believe it's almost ten years since it was released) I was disappointed too. I found it to be rather formulaic, with nothing standing out (rather like the Stones' latest effort). Perhaps best described as competent.
I'd seen Johnson at a one-day festival in Doncaster, and had hoped this album would be along similar lines, but it wasn't. A couple more listens have improved things, but only a bit.

I have that, as well as his earlier work, which was not easily available in record shops. I recall going into HMV to order it; when the guy behind the counter asked for his name and title of the work so he could look it up on their database, he thought I was taking the micky when I said "John Smith". Nevertheless he persevered and a copy was ordered.
I liked his early stuff (Marco, Del, a mutual friend and I saw him perform in Wrexham), but when he moved to the States his work became more commercial and not to my taste.

Is that a CD or an LP? Does it make any difference, as the compression will have been made at the recording or mastering stage.

It's okay - I always admired Squire's playing so bought it for that reason.
Reminds me a bit of the Seahorses album he did, but better. It's nothing like 'Time Changes Everything' or either of the Roses albums.
Reminds me a bit of Cream on a couple of tunes.
I'll play it again but not blown away by it.

It's a CD in a cardboard gatefold sleeve.
Mastering for the vinyl will be different you can't compress this much on vinyl.
Actually despite the lack of dynamic range the CD was perfectly listenable. Wall of sound - but you have to chalk it up to artist intent and leave it at that.
The vinyl version is made with a new process - a first, allegedly:

Yeah, Liam's thinking will be "It worked for 'What's the Story...' know what I mean, so it'll work here too, know what I mean?"
So it will have been engineered to sound great on the kind of systems that will be providing the soundtrack for barbecues in the gardens of every other council house in Manchester this summer, which won't matter because the music will be ignored and shouted over by the (what's the collective noun for a bunch of pissed up Mancs?) trying to look cool while make necking Stella in their favourite snide designer wear which they liberated from Cheetham Hill just before the rozzers shut it down for good.

Yes you would damage the cover - the adhesive on the back of Dymo labels is especially tenacious, especially after a year or two.
I have enough of a problem with the self-adhesive labels stuck on CD and LP covers. Fortunately I have a method told to me by a bookshop owner which works well.

Don't know, I'll let you know if we ever have one. You are of course always welcome, and your usual attire will be more than acceptable, in fact you will be lending a sophisticated air to the proceedings. Just be sure to bring your own music, food, booze, a barbecue set, and be prepared to find us not at home :)

That's OK, I detest barbecues: seems to me that half of the meat is undercooked and virtually raw, whilst the other half is overcooked and almost burnt. Possibly an exaggeration, but I much prefer to engage in dinner parties: wearing a dinner jacket is of course optional.

I have both 'Mothership' and the earlier collection (the one with the shadow of a Zeppelin hovering over some crop circles).
I haven't directly compared the two (both on CD), but would imagine Mothership in being more recent to have better SQ.
Oops - just realised the compilation with the crop circles is 'Remasters'.

Yes, it's a 1986 compilation album containing a lot of the singles.

When's that album from? Late 1980s?

Nah, it's 2010 mate.
I agree about "Riders on the Storm", not really big on guitar, but Santana chucks a fair bit at it that wasn't there originally. And Ray Manzarek is there, which is nice.
Not a bad album, though some of it sort of washes over me. Worth it though for "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" with India Arie doing the vocals. So she's going on the CD player next.

So, first up, this classic 80's pop soul album from one of the great American singer songwritters and his first solo album.
With a string of hit singles and album sales in excess of 100 million as a solo artist plus a highly successful period in the Commodores bringing us such classics as Easy and Three Times A Lady.

We end as usual with vinyl and one of the many great albums from this pair of music legends, who were the enduring core of this great group. Namely, the renown producer, audio engineer, musician and composer Alan Parsons and equally renown but perhaps lesser known singer, songwriter and pianist Eric Woolfson.
Hard to choose a favourite album but this one is certainly a top three !

Hi Martin. I only meant the original cover in relation to posting on here. I'm not aware of any CD release that has the original cover as artwork (as it was banned quite quickly) unless you or anyone else know otherwise.

I would agree with these observations. Additionally the dimensions of the CD case are stupid and pointless, also the omission of 'Comfortably Numb' which is included with the DVD) is inenexcusable. But as a whole I think it is interestingly different. I only play it when Mrs P is out, where the hooligan in me runs it at at levels where the low frequencies do their best to move the furniture around...

I agree with this too. Comes a distant-but-closing third to 'Fur and Gold' and 'Two Suns' imo. But I won't write it off, as I have found over the years that albums which don't initially impress often become more rewarding after repeated listens. Maybe this'll happen here, maybe not.
Only problem with this is that while in my teens with perhaps only 40 or 50 albums to choose from it was easy to play something to death, it is rather more difficult to do this when there are hundreds or more. So much choice, so little time...

Good one! Pleased to see she is recording again, having taken time out to look after her partner.
I did a quick read up on her:
The album I'm playing right now is her eponymous debut, released in 2006. After a four year break during which time her husband died from a methadone/alcohol overdose, she released "The Sea" (Dom's choice). Followed by "The Heart Speaks in Whispers" (2016), and "Black Rainbows" in September last year.
So only four albums in 18 years, though there have been other projects. Such a lovely delicate voice, you'd never guess she hails from Leeds :)

Re. Hunky Dory
I have his first LP, then there is a gap until his 'Berlin period' and then Scary Monsters.
I ought to investigate his early period more, but having had 'Pinups' and not liking it, it put me off somewhat.

'Pin Ups' is really just a selection of covers, and not really representative of his work during that period.
I can heartily recommend Hunky Dory, but then I would say that... it's the Bowie I grew up with, so there will be a certain amount of nostalgia there. I have always owned it in one format or the other. Currently I just have an original early press and a pretty recent vinyl reissue.
Some of the songs you will already be familiar with (Life on Mars, Changes, Oh! You Pretty Things), but it is so much more than that.
I think I gave my CD copy to Macca a couple of years ago, otherwise you could have had that.

Yeah, early Hawkwind was great. But I didn't buy their records as my mate was a massive fan, and if I wasn't at his house listening to them he was at mine and always brought them with him. I did however have Hall of the Mountain Grill, which I recently bought again.
I also saw them 5 or 6 times in the 70s, with their Liquid Len and his Lensmen :)
