IF YOU (LIKE ME) LIKE THE THE SWEET, THEN THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST VERSIONS OF A GREATEST HITS (BY THE SWEET) THAT YOU CAN GET BECAUSE IT INCLUDES ALL THE SUPERB B-SIDES TO THE SINGLES THAT THEY DID AND IT'S IN PRETTY MUCH CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER !!!

I STILL THINK THE SWEET WERE TOTALLY UNDERRATED AS A BAND AND DESERVE BETTER RECOGNITION THAN THEY GET; THEY WERE A LOT MORE THAN A POP BAND......... THEY ROCKED!!!

Oooh, I might have to look a copy of that out :D

Loz, I don't know what's going on with my head these days - I thought "Kate Bush, why not?" and decided I fancied playing "The Dreaming", only to find I don't have it

Oh well, this will do, some great stuff on this :) Interesting cover art - I wonder if it was her idea to have all that stuff flying out of her ladyparts?

It's an interesting album - certainly idiosyncratic. It is one of my favourite LPs.

I think the cover says it all, with all those wierd lifeforms flying out from under Bush's dress!

I thought Alien was crazy when you see the chest buster but, to be honest, I'd never noticed the fact that all those things were coming out of Kate's body - at least she wasn't being destroyed like in Alien !! All of Kate's albums are interesting, she's unique in every way - I've always liked her from the moment I heard Wuthering Heights and, thank goodness for Dave Gilmour's faith in her !!!

The video for Bittersweet Symphony mimicked Massive Attack's "Unfinished Sympathy" where vocalist Shara Nelson followed the camera on a waik through Los Angeles. A great song and a great video.

When I saw The Verve's video where he just barged past anyone who got in his way, my thought was "if he did that to me I'd knock him on his arse". I'm a lot calmer these days, probably an age thing :)

https://youtu.be/ZWmrfgj0MZI?t=294I remember both videos well. Didn't Massive Attack change their name to just Massive for that single as a result of the Gulf war? Never got why they had to.

If anyone doesn't know what Verve sounded like when they were good, listen to their first album A Storm in Heaven.

They also changed their name, the "The" was added later.

According to Wikipedia, "the band temporarily shortened their name to "Massive" on the advice of [Cameron] McVey [their first manager] to avoid controversy during the Gulf war".

My CD of "Blue Lines" says Massive Attack on the casework but Massive on the CD itself

The albums to listen to are Vienna, Rage In Eden, Quartet, Monument (Live) and Lament. All these albums are in the era with Midge Ure and to my mind are the best !!! The earlier albums are with John Foxx and are OK but nowhere near as good than the ones with Midge Ure. They did other albums with Midge but aren't of the quality of the aforementioned.

Midge did albums with Visage and they are superb aswell I.M.H.O. I'm sure others will no doubt disagree or slag them off !!! The 2 Visage albums with Midge are the self titled one and The Anvil

IMO, 'Led Zeppelin II' is one of their best.

I'm always suspicious of remasters, as again IMO, most I have heard are distinctly inferior to the originals. But as I have a lot of respect for Jimmy Page I'll give this one a try.

Not heard of them Adrian - what are they like?

Neither had I, a knowledgable music shop owner recommended them yesterday, I was trading some LPs and rationalising my collection a bit. An interesting blend of instrumentation and musical feel/genres, I suppose if you wanted to pigeonhole them then the Wiki one is OK "British nu jazz and downtempo group". If you like St. Germain you will probably like them, well worth a listen.

My personal view is that I think it will become regularly played album, and I will likely have to investigate some of their other offerings.

From Discogs.

"Their debut album, Motion, was released in 1999. The critical success of that album led to them being asked to perform at the Director's Guild Awards ceremony for the presentation of the Lifetime Achievement Award to film director Stanley Kubrick.

The band were asked by the organisers of the Porto European City of Culture 2000 festival to write a new score to Dziga Vertov's classic 1929 Russian silent film Man with a Movie Camera, to be performed live in accompaniment with a showing of the film. The work differed from the band's usual compositions due to its live performance, ruling out the post production work that was present on Motion. The Cinematic Orchestra toured with the work and later released it on an album of the same name. Many of the compositions originally created for Man with a Movie Camera were later adapted from live form (adding in vocal tracks and electronic elements, among other changes) for their next album, Every Day.

The Cinematic Orchestra released the album Ma Fleur on May 7, 2007.

The Cinematic Orchestra performed the soundtrack to the Disneynature film "The Crimson Wing: Mystery of the Flamingos", released on December 15, 2008."

The first 5 albums are really classy, granted proggy, but very good, 'Tales From Topographic Oceans' takes some getting into but I used to listen to it in my bedroom on cassette a lot in 73/74 and became quite familiar with it, I think there music takes quite a few listens. 'Fragile' is my favourite.

I think that some of their material can be difficult due to its symphonic/rock cross overs which can be confusing IMO.

The Philips CD104B was my first player - and very good it was at the time. The trouble was that in trying to make it compact dimensionally the component density was very high, which compounded by the poor heat sinking, meant solder joints could and did fail.

I've been doing some record cleaning with my improved method and both of them came up very well.

I saw Curved Air east Southampton University SU when I was 17 on 24 Jan 1976, apart from drooling over Sonja Christina, what I remember most was that they were superb musicianship. This wasn't surprising really they had toured relentlessly since 1970 https://curvedair.com/curved-air-gig-history.html I believe they are playing at a festival in Kent this year https://anewdayfestival.com/daily-line-ups quite a line up of prog rock bands, some I wouldn't mind seeing.

https://i.postimg.cc/WzHGcw5L/016.jpg

There's not a lot I can tell you about this CD I found in a charity shop. It was privately recorded, so no label or record number.

The best I can do is quote verbatim the notes on the back of the CD:

"This CD is a collection of covers and original songs. The covers and also "Hey Mr. Postman" were recorded in Amsterdam in August 97, and feature Carlos Vamos on the electric guitar. The following five compositions were produced later the same year in Rio de Janeiro, my home town, with session musicians."

Five of the six tracks were co-written with William Longden.

It's not bad, but I'm not sure I will try to track down any subsequent recordings.

What constitutes "working class rock"? To my ears they were heavily influenced by The Beatles; so pop rather than rock, not that there is anything wrong with that.

Were the Beatles not working class ???? The definition of pop can be debated, does it mean simply popular? In which case Metallica is as much pop as the Spice Girls were. Or is it a musical genre? Does it simply mean catchy? In which case, anything of any genre can be catchy if written that way. Oasis sound is certainly rock music, they had a standard rock band line up, their music was guitar driven and took from not just the Beatles, but T-Rex, The Sex Pistols, Slade and David Bowie to name a few. Their music was certainly "heavier" than the Beatles but also more one dimensional than the Beatles who tried their hand at all sorts of styles away from their early rock n roll rooted sound.

That 'pop' is simply short for 'popular' is a common misconception - I'm inclined to go with how someone on the radio (I can't remember who) that said "You take a song and produce it to make it 'pop'".

As far as I'm concerned "Pop Music" is anything that was aimed at the charts or entered the charts or was played to death by radio or DJs. No musical skill necessarily required.

Well Boris Blank, as you probably know, is one half of Swiss electronic outfit Yello, providing the music for vocalist and sometime collaborator Malia. The sound is recognisably Yello, but don't let that put you off. This is much more mellow, less frantic than Yello's usual fare.

The production is top-notch, beautifully clear and truly full-range. But my copy has dreadful vinyl roar, so I would recommend CD.

Malawi-born singer Malia's voice I'm struggling to describe, but I'm confident you would really like it.

One of the songs from the album:

Well Boris Blank, as you probably know, is one half of Swiss electronic outfit Yello, providing the music for vocalist and sometime collaborator Malia. The sound is recognisably Yello, but don't let that put you off. This is much more mellow, less frantic than Yello's usual fare.

The production is top-notch, beautifully clear and truly full-range. But my copy has dreadful vinyl roar, so I would recommend CD.

Malawi-born singer Malia's voice I'm struggling to describe, but I'm confident you would really like it.

Yes, I think I might. Thanks Steve.

No particular album, just been listening to assorted selections from Rhiannon Giddens, Malia, Humble Pie, Blind Faith, Laura Mvula, Jim Jones and Billie Eilish. And it's not even 10am. This is why streaming would be no good for me, except for discovery.

When I was twenty it was twenty years since Woodstock, which then seemed like some way distant event that had happened close to the dawn of time.

Now it's nearly forty years since Live Aid - which seems like yesterday. Or at best a few months ago.

Confession time: I have never heard the original studio album  I read somewhere that this live album is pretty much identical, so if you weren't too impressed with the original it may not be worth buying. I got it cheapish a couple of years ago at an audio show (£15).

Macca would be better placed to draw comparisons, he has both I think.
