yeah, pretty ghastly.. never heard of her either..
She's been around since about 2010, and in that time released nine albums, all big sellers. Mostly just her, a piano and some strings. Pretty downbeat most of the time, and her voice imo is completely at odds with how she swears like a trooper :)
Not for everyone, but I quite like. Not enough to spend 30-odd quid on the vinyl though, this was only £6.

You might change your mind after hearing this track from the album  I did say it's nothing like "Oxygene". Anyway, give it a go, preferably with headphones:

No worries. That particular track is a bit full on, but all of it is a bit chaotic. With 80s production through most of it. It is getting on for 40 years old now, I wonder what he's doing these days, if anything.
His dad Maurice Jarre, did a lot of film scores I believe. I liked what he did with "Jacob's Ladder", one of my favourite films.

Yes I'd probably agree with that, though the album I play most is "Something to Remember", a collection of her more down-tempo songs, which best demonstrates her imo under-rated voice.
Anyway, this now: Got an Amazon gift card for my birthday, and this was only £15.99. So there are still a few bargains to be had :)

I like both unfortunately or not as you may see it. The Bright side is a firmer harder rendition with more instrumentation, harking back to the PG4 and PG5 feel IMO, that Dark side is an odd description depending on how you look at it, I think the mix is more stripped back and so some of the songs become more forceful in the vocal and lyrical impact, I think that makes sense.

I'M DEFINITELY NOT IMPRESSED ABOUT THE LADY GAGA GUEST VOCALS ON THE ONE TRACK THOUGH ?? THE STONES DON'T NEED OTHER PEOPLE REALLY TO GIVE THEM CREDIBILITY (AS IS THE CURRENT TREND BY A LOT OF BANDS/ARTISTS) !!!!

It's from 1986 - it's okay. Imagine crossing Clapton with Phil Collins then chucking Tina Turner into the mix.
I don't think you'd be that keen. I have a soft spot because that was the tour on which I saw him live.

I think that was the time when both Clapton and Collins were going through partner difficulties. I also think Collins was staying with Clapton, so maybe during that period they influenced one another musically.

Collins plays drums on it and produces it.
I've not played August in a long time, must give it a spin. I remember my brother and I were record shopping and were both interested in this and Graceland and we agreed that I would get August and he got Graceland. I ended up playing Graceland more but liked August, I think it was of it's time, he looks like he's auditioning for Miami Vice on the cover. I only saw Clapton once on the Just One Night tour and he was very good.

What do you think of the Steve Earle CD Barry? Do you have any of his other albums? I'm going to put a cheeky bid on a 'bundle' listed on Ebay, which includes "Copperhead Road" - I already have this one on vinyl, so if I win the auction I'll send the CD to you if you want it :)
Hi Steve,
The Steve Earle is new to me. I had heard of him of course, but never got around to hearing any of his work - I think the label "country" caused me doubt. However I saw 'The Collection' in a charity shop going for very little, so I thought I would take a punt. I know that Grant is an admirer of Steve Earle, and as I respect his tastes in music, I didn't think I could badly wrong. As it turns out I like it very much and would be interested in hearing more.
So if you do find yourself with a CD of his that you do not need, going spare, I would be delighted to take it off your hand! :)
Thanks for the offer.

It has been awhile since my last post due to loosing my father in December and then of course the whole hullabaloo of the festive period! My father was a huge music lover in particular Stan Kenton, Count Basie, Oscar Peterson, Frank Sinatra and the whole 50's to 70's Jazz and contemporary vocalists scene. I have inherited his music collection running to over a 1000 albums and having now added them to mine I am left with about 40 duplicates! So my first choice is one of those duplicates a great album by the perhaps little known but great WYJO.

I like it a lot, heavier, perhaps less 'playful' than the second.

Thanks Dom, I did notice a new re-issue on Ebay at a very good price, so I took the plunge and snapped it up, looking forward to some more Patto.
I noticed that you probably have quite a lot of records, I was wondering what cleaning regime you have if any?
I have been trying something new out recently based on the Audiophile Man's(Paul Rigby) vinyl cleaning product reviews and his manual cleaning process, I was primarily cleaning with an ultra-sound bath and a cleaning fluid mix similar to what he uses, but I felt the ultra-sonic clean did not always get the record clean. So I have tried another product and gone back to using it in the Disco-Anitstatic and got some great results.

I never thought that this particular record was very well re-issued/recorded/engineered, it always sounded a bit lack lustre. However I have been trying out a different record cleaning product and it seems to have made all the difference, much more clarity and detail, and better dynamics. Perhaps it's a case of not being properly cleaned when made, or maybe my ears are working fully today.

Richard Ashcroft and The Verve were from Wigan, and in the 90s I saw them live at Wigan's Haigh Hall Country Park. I actually preferred the support act (Beck), a view that didn't go down well with my mates, who were all from Wigan.
That's the thing with Wigan, lots of people come from Wigan, not many go to Wigan.

I was there once back in early 1980s, all I can recall is rows of half demolished terraced houses. Or maybe that was Widnes, I always get them confused.
Then you've got St Helens. My memory of that is it was like 100 years after the apocalypse where the survivors have cobbled together something vaguely reminiscent of the previous civilization from wreckage they found lying about.
But that was years ago and I'm told it's quite posh now.

Only just spotted your post Martin. The Richard Ashcroft CD was one of a number of CDs that caught my eye and picked up cheap in a charity shop.
Totally new to me, I had heard of him but had never heard anything by him. I liked the disc and will keep it, but have to confess I wouldn't have wanted to have paid full price for it.
If I see anything else by him I might be tempted, but only it is going cheap. I suspect he is a performer best seen live.

My Dad loved music mainly not of his "generation" whereas my Mum was very much a Beatles, Cliff Richard, her "generation" music lover so I grew up listening to a wide spectrum of artists and went to concerts from a young age e.g. Shirley Bassey with The New Seekers as support act or Lionel Hampton and the Jazz All Stars !

No, vinyl prices started at £75 new. Used was even more. I got it on CD for a fiver, no brainer really.
I still need to get "Pretzel Logic" and their penultimate album (can't remember the name) to complete the set. I suppose I ought to get "Steely Dan Gold" or something too, so I can have "FM". It's a dear do, trying and failing to avoid a completist spiral

This Greatest Hits album also gives you 'FM' and 'Here At The Western World', which are both essential. Used to be cheap on s/h vinyl, I don't know if it still is. I've got two of them on vinyl so you can have one next time I see you, although CD is better obvs

No, total rip-off! The best versions are the original CD releases - the remasters they did around the turn of the century are acceptable but not quite as good.
Got all but the last two albums on vinyl and got all of them on CD as well. Plus the DVD-A of 'Gaucho'. ( seems to be expensive now https://www.amazon.com/Gaucho-DVD-Audio-Steely-Dan/dp/B0001JXQDI)

I would stick with your original pressings, they will have been made when the master tapes were still fresh.
God alone knows what the £200 'audiophile' releases were made from No doubt from digital copies of the masters, but how old and degraded were the master tapes when those copies were made? I think the Dan original master tapes were lost in the fire at Universal some years ago.

Musical appreciation remains individualistic and subjective. It's an understood that an invisible "in my opinion" precedes anyone's posts/comments regardless of how enthusiastic the opinions are presented. That's how I take it, choosing not to be such a big girl's blouse, whether I do or do not agree.

Differing opinions about particular music choices are just a bit of fun, and come under the heading 'banter' imo.
FWIW, I had no time for The Sweets' glam singles, but having seen them live in the 80s I would agree with Loz, that they did indeed 'rock'. And regarding that Fleetwood Mac album, well I have that and have played it only once. The picture on the cover of that poor dog begging it's owner "Please make it stop!" should have been my first clue.

Well, I can always count on Barry's unique seal of approval..................... cheers Barry !!! Now we've got Barry's inane nonsense out of the way; The Sweet, like Slade, Bowie and T-Rex were bloody great and, to me, were the essence of good time rock n roll when music was fun !!!!
If you wanna hear The Sweet rock, listen to the B-Sides of some of the glam singles......... they were heavier and more powerful than the A-Side !!! As for their music lacking substance or value, I think there's plenty of people out there who may disagree with you as THEY ALSO SOLD LOTS AND LOTS OF RECORDS !!!! Kerr-Ching !!!!
As I've always said in many of my posts, music is subjective and we all like different things - if we all liked the same thing, the world would be boring and uninteresting and I appreciate that my musical tastes aren't to everyone else's taste but, on here, I don't trash what other people like - it's personal choice and that's how it is. Have a nice day !!!!

Wiki
Compared to 1977's Rumours, which sold ten million copies by February 1978, Tusk was regarded as a commercial failure by the label, selling four million copies. In 2013, NME ranked Tusk at number 445 in their list of "500 Greatest Albums of All Time".The album was also included in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die. In 2000, it was voted number 853 in Colin Larkin's All Time Top 1000 Albums
When Tusk was first released I purchased it, I was 21. Put it on my Dual TT and listened, and played it several times, and I thought well thats disappointing, from then it did not get played much. However about 6 years ago when replacing my lost vinyl collection I purchased another copy put it on and my view of it was and is now somewhat different. I think I suddenly got what they were trying to do on Tusk. The recordings and feel and structure of the songs are much more stripped back, in some cases, giving a more simplistic presentation when compared to the previous two highly successful albums. If you carefully listen to those then you can clearly hear that they were very carefully crafted and produced probably with the aim of producing a more commercial sound that would have mass appeal, thats view for what its worth. I think Mick Fleetwood has commented along these lines in interviews.
I now consider Tusk to be quite a good album which was not received as well at the time as it was a departure from the previous two and was unexpected by the masses. Saying that it still sold over 4 million copies, something most bands would be happy with.

I'm not sure why Tusk is so bad (IMO the only track that is any good is the title track), but it wouldn't surprise me if it was due to the ongoing in-fighting and bed-hopping of the group members, which probably encouraged the 'stripped back' presentation. But whatever the reason, it's an album that doesn't encourage me to listen to attentively.
I will fish it out and give it another listen: last time was about five years ago, and then I thought it crap and was going to take it to our local charity shop. Maybe third time lucky?

Its like all art forms, some you like some you dont, some you get others you dont. Some are great some not so great, and perceptions of greatness can change with time.
I came back to it with fresh ears after 20+ years and had probably lost some of my preconceived views, I now listen and hear it differently and enjoy it. [emoji41]

Why 3 CDs? What additional material is on them?
a live performance on this one which is 2 discs. very good too..port chester n york... both good recordings
Well at least that is better than 'out takes' that pad out CD versions of some LPs.
What I really detest are the 'Easter eggs' at the end of some CDs. You think the disc has finished, but the clock continues running, and after about a minute or more a rather indifferent sounding track will play.
I hate the 'bonus' tracks on remaster CDs. The last song should be the last song that's what I'm used to. Ruins that 'completion' feeling you get when an album finishes. Because it doesn't! Just wrong.

Some good points Ade.
That has happened with me with some albums, didn't like when originally purchased, but when revisited years later found that I had 'grown into it'. I'll give Tusk another go, maybe when first hearing I was expecting a "Rumours II", which it definitely wasn't.

Haven't played that in ages! In some ways I prefer the previous (first) album, but both are good. :)

Definitely recommended listening Adrian. The three I have (Two Suns, The Hunted Man, Fur and Gold) are all worthy. If you like Kate Bush, you'll like these. Natasha has a great voice, and the production is excellent too.

I was thinking of 'Gold and Fur'. The one you cite is 'Two Suns'.
I'm not sure of the title of the third album (the one which has a naked Natasha Khan carrying a naked guy around her shoulders).
Ah - I've just read your last post: yes, "The Haunted Man".
Agree with your assessment of Natasha Khan/Bat for Lashes. Comparison with Kate Bush is quite apposite.
