An alternative source, and one that I subscribe to, is that the background noise is the church's air conditioning system. It is too even and constant to be traffic noise, and if you listen carefully you can hear the 'squeak' of the fan bearings.

But you are right - The Trinity Sessions was recorded using a Calrec Soundfield microphone set to the Blumlein 'crossed figure of 8' configuration.

The original recording was for some reason recorded at relatively low levels I believe, not sure why, this means that groove noise can be a replay issue on some versions, from what I have read especially the later re-releases, although I believe a 1980 Japan release is considered by some to be good dynamically. Most recommend seeking out as early a pressing as possible in NM condition.

Yes completely agree, some of their best material, with a superb drum/percussion track. Originally recorded in Quad and released in Japan, I think they must have gone to great lengths to get the best live recording they could.

You don't see vinyl that cheap that's worth owning very often. Shame its sister album 'The Grand Wazoo' is a lot dearer, be nice to have both. Maybe next Christmas.

It’s from the same era as ‘Thick as Brick’, ‘Passion Play’ & ‘War Child’ all big favourites of mine. ‘Minstrel in the Gallery’ is good musically and has that usual tongue in cheek lyrics, which can be thought provoking, it’s very good IMHO. Happy listening.

It is pretty good IMHO, there are two version the Light Side and the Dark Side each edited/mixed by different engineers, I have to listen to the Dark side yet.

Just looked on Amazon and Ebay - vinyl prices start at 70-odd quid :( So that's not happening. I still don't have "Can't buy a Thrill" and "Pretzel Logic", so one of those two will be my next purchase, and the above mentioned album can wait.

I know I could get it much cheaper on CD, but for some reason not even known to me I want vinyl only for the Dan, as it is with Zappa and Hendrix. Maybe I need professional help.

Edit: just put a bid on a CD copy of this, which is one twentieth of the vinyl cost. Can't argue with that logic.

Don't really know if I would disagree... I grew up with my dad's Honky Chateau and Greatest Hits but when this hit my turntable as an adult, it was an eye opening experience in a very good way. In a case of "the house is burning grab an Elton John album"... this would be the one for me.

Yes, World Machine is a good album; I saw them live at the B/ham Odeon on that tour in the 80's - I've still got my program :thumbsup: from the event. I have to be honest here and I think that when they did World Machine, that's when I think they went more commercial and I never thought from then (including that album) they were as good as before. I liked the 1st album, The Early Tapes,True Colours and some of The Pursuit Of Accidents. World Machine was a wholly commercially aimed album and just lost some of that something that the previous albums had. They're still a fantastic band and the musicianship is superb!!!

I saw Level 42 again last year at Torquay Theatre and they were still brilliant live!!! :thumbsup:

:) Yes I know the track your referring to... I suppose it can sound a bit like vinyl noise when played at low volume - no such issue here as I had the house to myself and had volume adjusted accordingly ;) Though I think I am due a fresh copy, I bought this secondhand and it's not the best condition wise.

I feel the same about Mary J. Blige, who I think has an incredible voice. Dubbed "The Queen of Hip Hop", and "Queen of Soul/R&B", she's never going to make it into my record collection. Be nice if she moved into another genre, say rock - the version of U2's "One" with her doing guest vocals is so much better than the one with just Bono.

Having now watched the video you sent, I don't consider that is a rock song; I actually quite like the song and the girl performs it quite well :thumbsup: but its simply NOT a rock song.

Again, I have to be honest here, I never saw Patti Smith as a rock singer; she was associated with the american punk scene but I saw her more as a poetic folk type singer. If I were to try and give a good example of a female rock singer it'd be Suzi Quatro in her younger days.

To be fair, I've got all of Hearts albums but, the ones that stand out for me are Heart 1985 and Bad Animals 1987. I still don't think many women can do rock vocals though !!!
