I heard it last weekend through those Klipsch Cornwalls, and it bowled me over. But I could yet be disappointed, it's happened before. In about 1977 I heard Fleetwood Mac's Rumours played through a pair of Yamaha NS1000Ms in a hifi shop. I was so impressed I left the shop and went over the road to buy the record. Didn't have quite the same impact through my Wharfedale Dentons. Still a classic though, it has seen me through all my system's incarnations :)

Well he's an old boy now. I was 22 when it came out and I was amazed some old geezer of 45 years of age could still rock out like that.

on my system now I can hear he sings 'My libido' on 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'. I always used to hear that as 'Panel Beaters'. Still jars with me.

it was my era I suppose but the only other grunge bands I have records of is Smashing Pumpkins and Foo Fighters. And I'm not sure Foo Fighters count.
I was mostly geting into Steely Dan and Creedence back then IIRC
(Noel) Gallagher noted in 2006 that the 1994 Oasis single "Live Forever" "Was written in the middle of grunge and all that, and I remember Nirvana had a tune called 'I Hate Myself and I Want to Die,' and I was like ... Back when this came out my boss's boyfriend was big pals with Dave Grohl. I told him to tell Grohl that IMO he had made a classic rock album.
Didn't expect him to actually mention it to him, but he did. He said Grohl was very appreciative and said 'Thank you'.
Read an interview with him not so long ago where he says this is his favourite of all their records.

I think Liam and Noel are both a pair of dicks for continually spatting about eachother and not sorting out their differences !!!! They should reform Oasis whilst they are still young enough for it to be worthwhile - it's what all the fans want.
A bit like Guns N Roses, it took fkn years before Axl and Slash sorted their differences out and did what they should've done years ago and reformed Guns N Roses whilst they were still young enough for it to be worthwhile; alas, they left it too long, reformed (sadly without the original line-up with Izzy and/or Matt/Steve) and basically, they're too old now.
Good job I saw Velvet Revolver in the early noughties when they were young enough to still kick ass!!!!!

Nirvana sort of started Grunge.
Neil Young never had a 'Grunge' period, he's done a number of albums with Crazy Horse, some of which are moderately heavy rock, that's all.
Some say that was part of the inspiration for Grunge but I'm not sure if that's really true.
Sabbath probably more of an influence as they were pretty much the influence for anything heavier than the Stones.
This is where genre labels fall down. I always assumed Black Sabbath were 'heavy metal'; a genre I really disliked - but then I dislike Deep Purple, Iron Maiden etc. :sofa:

No need to hide behind the sofa. Judging music by its genre is crazy, I think one should judge it on whether one likes the tune/song or not; I wouldn't think that "More Than Words" by Extreme was the product of a metal/rock/funk fusion band but, its a great tune/song; neither would I think that "Every Rose Has Its Thorns" by Poison was a song by a Glam Metal band or "Changes" by Black Sabbath was by a full on genre inventing metal band!!! :thumbsup:
By the way, what genres/bands do you like ? Don't supply a big list, I'm guessing it will be quite long and it is 10pm :lol:

I think when describing a band, genre is too blunt a tool, and can be misleading. I don't get how some folk sort their music collections according to genres, I'd end up wasting more time looking for stuff than playing it.

I agree. Storing alphabetically suits me best, although that needs further sub-indexing for acts that begin with 'The' :).

I just discount 'The' in my listing: The Wonderstuff filed under 'W', The Beatles under 'B' etc. The only exception being 'The The' :)

Your collection is probably way bigger than mine and so would make sense. My pile consists of only about 500 records and 700 CDs, so alphabetical works fine. Unless I put something back in the wrong place, then I'm buggered :doh: One of my Melody Gardot CDs has gone walkabout, and I'm too lazy to go through all of the CDs.

Being one of the more senior members of AoS, it will not surprise you to know that my musical journey started in the '60s, and as such I became interested in performers and groups of the time; some of which I'm embarrassed now in retrospect to admit I liked. :doh:
The first group that I followed was The Shadows, and after them The Beatles. Later came The Rolling Stones, The Kinks, The Who and then a whole slew of groups under the unhelpful and misleading heading of "progressive pop/rock":
Pink Floyd; The Nice; The Doors; Family; Soft Machine, etc.
Although contemporaneous, I listened to, but disliked "heavy metal" such as Deep Purple; Black Sabbath; Iron Maiden, and my dislike has not diminished with time. I did/do like Led Zeppelin, but that is due to them being blues-based, rather than the tedious nihilism of most heavy metal groups.
It was through listening to British blues-influenced groups such as John Mayall's Bluesbreakers; Fleetwood Mac; Keef Hartley etc. that encouraged to seek out the US blues players that had influenced them.
That's enough to be getting on with for now - after near 60 years of listening, my musical tastes have expanded enormously, yet I still try to keep up with what is new by watching Jools Hollander 'Later', but rarely find anything there that 'fires me'.

Like I said in my previous post, you are what you are, you like what you like and that's it !! If we were all the same, the world would be kinda boring wouldn't it ? I'm not quite so sure about "tedious nihilism," I think the devil and the beauty are in the detail (of the playing). That's the opinion of myself after around 52 years of music obsession and seeing countless bands and singers!!!

One or two nits I feel need picking:
Firstly the casework, it's absolute crap! Unnecessarily large, it won't fit alongside the other CDs, it needs to stand on its side. Also, "Comfortably Numb" is conspicuous by its absence. This song formed part of the live set, and is included in the DVD/Blu Ray, so why not here? Also much of the vocals are a bit iffy, some of which will be down to guest vocalist Spandau-man Gary Kemp, but I also think Waters' voice is moving past its sell-by date.
Now onto the good bit:
Excellent recording, interspersed with some startling dynamics and subterranean bass which I could feel through the sofa. When CD1 kicked off the cat almost shit herself and made a bolt for the door. The song structures sometimes sounded a bit clumsy, lacking the 'smoothness' of the original versions we know so well, but then it is live, so we probably shouldn't expect it to.The arrangements aren't necessarily worse, just different. And I found that quite refreshing.
All things considered, well worth the six pounds fifty it cost me, and I look forward to next time Anita leaves the house and I can give it some proper welly!

Does your remastered version have extra tracks? I have had a look at my original 1971 pressing and it only has 9 tracks: 5 on side one and 4 on side two.
3 LPs seems quite extravagant for only 9 tracks.

I was tempted with this re-release Half Speed Mastered 180gram 3 LP Set (see below) with 'Now and Then' included. I am not usually a fan of re-mixes but what I was not prepared for was the super pressing quality and how sympathetically and well done the re-mixes have been approached, it just opens them up and gives better clarity. The best I have heard these tracks IMHO.

Almost since the advent of CD, it seems most albums are about an hour long, compared to traditional 40 minutes(ish). This means that many vinyl releases have to be double albums, bumping up the price even further...
But we like what we like, and I will continue to buy records, as long as they don't take the piss with prices.
Speaking of which... We went into town for the first time in years yesterday (Mrs. P wanted some Doc Martens, we found just one shop selling them and they wanted £225 and didn't have her size anyway. She has now bought some online £60 cheaper). But my point is: I went for a nosey round the HMV store, where none of the Bowie vinyl was under 30 quid, and "Young Americans" was £50! Now that is taking the piss. I paid £20 for mine a couple of years ago.
I can see CD becoming the preferred physical format again (it probably already is now), unless the vinyl sellers get their shit together.

I very rarely buy new CDs, much cheaper to find used ones on Ebay, particularly Music Magpie. As for vinyl, I can see them coming to me mostly as Christmas or birthday presents. Or occasionally secondhand from record shops.

New releases on CD are usually only £9.99 - in 1980s money that's about three quid so they are cheaper now than they've ever been.
For vinyl, demand is still outstripping supply. You don't need a degree in economics to know that's going to push the price up.

Got the Johnny Harris one off Ebay, I'm guessing many of you will know it, it's pretty good. The Jack Mcduff one is very good, late 60s, or early 70s, whichever, groovy jazz, but good, not cheesy. It's a reissue, the Harris one is original on CBS.

Well I gave the Hawkwind album I bought in Bury yesterday a go, and found it to be unplayable :( No visible scratches, but it sounds like someone replaced their stylus with a rusty nail.
So this should restore my faith - looks and sounds like new and only cost me 3 quid :)

Many regard 'Blue' as Joni Mitchell's best LP. I like it but don't think it her best - I prefer her first three albums.

I never said there was a problem, I said it was a waste to give it away - but I get your point.

I've got that on vinyl have to say it was a disappointment. I think the only thing he's done that I rate is 'Green'.

I have to say, I find it strange that some people who appear to like rock and prog music seem to dislike this album!! :scratch: I think it strikes a great balance between the two genres; the musicianship on the album is excellent - I really love it !!!!! :thumbsup: To be honest, I rate all the early Steve Hillage solo albums!!! As I've said many times though, we're all different so................ cest la vie !!

I haven't played Motivation Radio for so long, that I can't remember what it was like. But I still have it, so it couldn't have been too bad :).

I've been meaning to investigate Richard Hawley for a good while now. A few months ago I picked up a disc of his in a charity shop - don't remember the title, but I was disappointed. He was singing with orchestral backing; whereas I was expecting to hear him play guitar.
No doubt I chose a bad example, so does the album you cite have him playing guitar- I feel I ought to give him a second chance.

Well, upon seeing people's opinions on this album (Standing At The Edge of The Sky) about it being "psychedelic," and the fact that I'd never heard of it, that kinda aroused my attention as I like things like that so, I've just got it on my streamer. The album's correct title is "Standing At The Sky's Edge."
The opening track immediately got me comparing it to tracks on Oasis's album Standing On The Shoulders Of Giants. I shall carry on and listen to the rest. :thumbsup:
Now I've listened to the rest, I find the opening track excellent and as the album progresses it becomes slowly more mellow but still with the psychedelic edgy guitars mixed in. It's like mixing a 60's crooner with 60's psychedelia and adding a modern twist to it; overall, it was quite listenable - the opening track is definitely the one that sparked my interest the most (very Oasis like.) :thumbsup:

As i've said loads of times, we're all different aren't we ? I think Standing On The Shoulders of Giants is a SUPERB psychedelic triumph!!!! The first 4 Oasis albums are absolutely great but, when when Oasis did Heathen Chemistry, that's when I felt the standard started to drop and, after that, it wasn't good except for the single "Shock Of The Lightning" which was bangin'!!! :thumbsup:

I dont think either of them are doing anything that's much good; as I've said in a previous post, I wish the pair of them would sort their differences out and do what the fans all want and reform Oasis. Even if they don't do any new music, just do some gigs before they get too old to do it - Liams voice seems OK at the moment from what I've seen and Noel can still sing and play OK so, do it now before it's too late!!!! :thumbsup:

Try Specsavers, they do hearing tests now as well as eye tests but unfortunately haven't moved into retail food sales yet so, try Aldi or Poundstretcher for the biscuits and I'm sure you'll get a good deal there if your worried about a £1.00!! Much as it pains me to say it, but as things stand my vote is for CD too. Just too many greedy bastards about taking advantage of the vinyl resurgence. Mike's experiences are all too common, where used copies are rated unrealistically, and new vinyl quality is patchy at best.
I bought a used copy of Hawkwind's first album a couple of weeks ago. Ok I only paid a tenner, but the thing is unplayable. I could have got it on brand new CD for less than that.
My vinyl collection is quite modest compared to many on here (about 500), but that's enough to see me out. There's only so many hours in a day, and my body only so many years left on the clock. So... with the odd exception it will be pretty much CD-only in my buying future, until the vinyl bubble bursts or I peg it, whichever comes first.

Absolutely true. Not just with visuals but also with sound. Digital recording is better but if the content isn't any good there's not much benefit in it being crystal clear.
Although the conversation I referred to was about which has better sound quality, it wasn't about the other factors.

I agree with that !! I think that their is a lot of factors that come into play when we discuss old vs new etc. I (as with a lot of you) can give examples of where analogue just fits the bill better. One example is where the band "Airbourne" opted to record their first album using all analogue equipment due to the fact that they felt digital recording could not replicate the analogue sound of older recordings and, to be honest, I think they were right !!

getting a little of the right type of distortion in the right places is what good vinyl does well to make peoples hearing happy. doesnt work as well once you get used to none of course and then can become wearing. hearing isnt all about ear; its about what the brain wants to hear too

For me stuff like The beatles/Stones is better suited to vinyl, although I have Abbey rd on cd, but that has a warmer sound overall. The white album I couldn't even manage on vinyl, just sold it. The thing with vinyl is it seems to place the music better, its more grounded, on CD you've got all those 1s and 0s flying around and it just sounds edgy, impossible with classical too, may be its my hearing, I'm quite sensitive in public places to people who have their mobile phone on loud speaker for instance. Of course buying on cd is much cheaper, and I will continue to buy them in some cases, just got 3 'This mortal coil' cds, I have their first lp original, that was mint, a rare find. It was 10x the cost of the cds though. Life's too short for seeking out first pressings of anything you like.

I have to say that with some CD's, when they remaster them it takes away a little of the warmth of the original analogue CD version so, for me, I sometimes keep my original CD version than get a remastered version. Some remastered versions can sound too processed and a little harsh - it depends on lots of factors doesn't it........... your ears, your hi-fi system, the quality of the signal source from the CD player, room acoustics and all manner of things !!!

So first up an album from 1998 by perhaps a relatively unknown name outside of the Jazz world, however, this guy has an ability to play the lyric of a tune to perfection with interpretation but never loosing the listener in an indulgent avant-garde demonstration of his talent; a great example being track 3 "Strange Little Smile/With You I'm Born Again".

Now we follow on with another guitarist, singer-songwriter and composer and his bands 1980 third album, often overshadowed by the later and perhaps more commercially successful albums, this album still achieved Platinum sales in the USA, Italy, Finland and New Zealand, with double Platinum sales in the UK and Canada.
The album featured Roy Bittan on keyboards and Sid McGinnis on Guitars. On the whole I would agree. But with reference to Donald Fagin's 'The Nightfly', it maybe one of the first digital recordings to appear on vinyl, but it was not the first - that honour goes to Ry Cooder's 'Bop Till You Drop - and it is a terrible recording: the soundstage is flat and the instrumentalists pop up and down like the price flags on an old fashioned cash register. If an album needed remastering, this is a prime candidate.

I'm going to do an experiment on the subject of original CD vs RM CD. I already have a 2020 RM of Tears For Fears The Hurting so, I've just decided to purchase an original 01 matrix 1983 mercury UK release of the album (which I did own in 1983/4 but it got stolen along with my car in the 90's); I'm going to give the both of 'em an audition on my set-ups (both the Pioneer and the Mission systems) and see what I think; after all, the best judge of 'em (to me) is my ears so, we'll see !!!
I've just got to wait for the orig version to arrive in the post this week (hopefully !!!)
I know, this has been done so many times before and it is a boring subject but, just for my own personal edification, I'm going to do it to see how it ties in with comments I've read on here.
