I do need to be in the mood for Frank, though 'Hot Rats' is the exception. Any time is a good time for Hot Rats :)
In the early 80s I naively thought it would be good to collect his entire discography. That idea didn't last long, life and money is too short to be spent pursuing that goal :nono:

Well there are 126 official Zappa releases, with an almost unlimited number of bootlegs. So you were wise not to pursue trying to collect them all!

:eek: When I set out on that foolhardy quest I think it was about 80 or so. I would never have kept pace, it would be like saving for a deposit on a house, where prices just get away from you!
There will be someone out there who has managed it, but he probably has no money and no friends :(

Think I have about 10 Zappa albums. He's so varied I can't imagine anyone liking everything he ever did. I mean some of it is classical music, so that rules it out for me.
I've got a few people into him over the years. At first they resist but then they start to get it. A month later they're showing you all the albums they've got so far.
Think I have 6 and a half - the 'half' being Zappa's ''The Perfect Stranger", conducted by Pierre Boulez.

Wow! 'Run Like Hell' - They played this on Planet Rock a couple of days back, I was listening via the speaker in the computer tower sat under my desk. Really enjoyed listening to it but this is a whole new ballpark.
I suppose that's why we bother to have proper systems isn't it?

I often wonder why a lot of people just dont bother investing in a "PROPER" hi-fi system; I think unless you've played an album on something really good, you've probably never really heard the album !!!!!
Maybe nowadays, music isn't so important in people's lives like it used to be ???

Donald Byrd - Places and Spaces, a fantastically uplifting album. Unfortunately not as good on CD as on vinyl, so the hunt continues for an original. Might be my room, but the bass is better controlled on the vinyl version, in fact everything is.
Edit, fuck it just got a brand new vinyl copy on Ebay for £27 posted, for some reason typical price seems to be £40 now for many of these reissues, fuck that!!

The record sales and the critical consensus tends to point otherwise but, its a subjective point.
I like most Pink Floyd so it doesn't really bother me.
Just as a matter of interest, I'm listening to Roger Waters - The Dark Side Of The Moon Redux; I dont think that Roger really needed to do this album. I think it's more of a self indulgent thing that Roger has done as the original album is quite simply on its own high and mighty pedestal in the world of music. Roger (in his very old tired sounding voice) is just laying out his critical spiel about things that are in his mind in conjunction with the original lyrics of the songs - its OKish but, its a little boring; maybe it's his age, I really don't know but I don't feel it adds anything new to the album other than the clever lyrics and some of the messages it conveys.
It's an album that's for Pink Floyd fans to individually assess for themselves and make their own judgement. As for me, I'm on teetering on the top of the fence - it's a bit boring but, as much as I find his voice tired and a little effortless, I find myself listening to it................. maybe because of it's relationship to the original album !!! I've got to ponder some more !! :scratch: :scratch:

Rest of the band wanted to become millionaire rock stars, I don't think they had much choice myself.
The early stuff is a bit patchy, had a listen to 'Piper' not so long ago, some great stuff on that, and some utter crap.
Ofc it's all over after 'Final Cut'. 'Lapse' has its moments but it isn't Floyd, and as for 'Endless River' - more like 'Endless Wank.'
None of them's solo stuff ever did anything for me at all including 'The Madcap Laughs' (although it's a great album title).

Agree with all of that. I saw PF in the late '60s when Barratt was with them, but even at that time it is quite possible that Gilmour was in the wings ready to take over.

Safe As Milk is the only one I have. I'm by no means a Beefheart fan, and just picked that particular album at random. I could just have easily bought one of the others. I played it just once, and found it a bit dated sounding, very sixties, and not necessarily in a good way.
I might give it another go in the morning, see if I've grown into it yet. You never know, my music choices do seem to be moving back in time at the moment.
I more or less lost interest after DSOTM, and partially so after Waters left.
As such I don't have a copy of The Wall, though I do have a copy of The Final Cut.

Yes we played it on the drive back from NEBO. Surprisingly good recording I thought, but, bookended by 'Astronmy Domine' (great) and 'Bike' (good grief), patchy is an understatement.
I bought The Madcap Laughs soon after it came out, after hearing 'Terrapin' on a Harvest sampler album. Which turned out to be the only song I liked.
For me the only Floyd worth listening to was when Gilmour and Waters could work together, and Syd was elsewhere.

I think it will always be important, but there are just so many other ways to be entertained these days.
At no point in the last 50 years did I ever think "This sounds crap, I wish I had a better stereo". I either connected with the music or didn't, regardless of what it was played on. Nice to have a system that can resolve more detail and greater scale, but the 'essence' will always be there if it's a good song. that way I can still enjoy classic rock songs on my jobsite radio.
Which brings me to an unrelated gripe: Planet Rock has vanished from my radio :( Apparently it's no longer going out on DAB, just DAB+, or tinternet. So looks like I need a DAB+ radio, which will be 130 quid. I sense a con here.

Kinda reminds me of TV....................... how many streaming services have you got to subscribe to now to have the ability to view what you want - there are so many; sport is the worst, especially "Pay Per View" for different events - it's all A GREAT BIG FKN CON!!!!!!

Apart from the DAB+ thing. There will be other stations in the same group as Planet Rock, like Capital maybe. And I'm assuming all the various BBC stations will go the same way.
I will have to get a new one at some point, it gets so much use. Not just work, also when camping or in the garden. I might just upgrade - Makita have another similar for about £180, that also can bluetooth from your phone and had a subwoofer built into the bottom.

How long will it be now before we see the scrapping of the FM airwaves and we all have to listen to sub standard compressed music forever. I bet Ofcom will have a field day raking in all that money for the government from the sell off of the 88 - 108 mhz frequency range. Most civilians, the best system they own is the one in their car.
They don't even know separates hi-fi is a thing. The ones who come round here often assume that all the equipment is for making recordings not playing them. Domestic playback equipment to them is earbuds or Alexa.
My system is so complicated, my partner doesn't know how to use it!

Flares were great, and when moving from 70s to 80s fashion they were so accommodating - there was room under them for my tiny white tennis shorts and multicolour legwarmers, so I didn't look stupid when out and about, but when I arrived at my aerobics class for a boogie to "Lets Get Physical" I just whipped off the flares and I was ready to go :)

I might just be growing into these old albums - just wait to see what's going on next: it's a classic and will no doubt be very familiar to you, but tbh I didn't care for it much when I bought it. We'll see...

Later issues of the LP only had the yellow banana printed on the cover, yet retained the "peel slowly and see" instruction. A cost-cutting exercise obviously - but I always thought Andy Warhol's cover idea pretty stupid.

Shame, as the musicians can play - but not what I like. Back to a charity shop for this one!

This Music on Vinyl pressing is actually a double album, the second disc carrying 7 bonus tracks, same as the CD. I'm liking this album more than I was expecting, very bluesy.
TBH, I've never checked this band out before and tonight, I thought, lets give it a try. I have to admit, I like this a lot; in places it's like psychedelic blues rock and reminds me a bit of the Stones and in a few other areas, its totally out there !! Very interesting !!! Great choice !!! :thumbsup:

So, unfortunately, no time probably for a vinyl album as I decided that this band would be first up and thier epic double album The Wall from 1979 is where we start today. I think it's fair to say this album has sold multi platinum in pretty much every territory that matters peaking with 23 x Platinum sales in the USA.
As this album is part of the Shine On box set it would be inevitable that I would end up playing another one of the albums maybe Dark Side of the Moon or Wish You Were Here or maybe Animals or ...........
I do, however, still have the original vinyl release of The Wall from 1979 which has regrettably seen better days from a playing perspective!

The packaging on each of the previously released albums was unique to this set, with each CD housed in a solid black jewel case with a small sticker of the album cover affixed to the front. When lined up in order of release, the spines of the eight CD cases displayed the prism image from the cover of The Dark Side of the Moon.

Anita has worked out (with the help of Youtube) how to 'double click' (clicking on the pad with two fingers), but the little window that then appears has different options to my old lappy. I used to select 'copy image link' then went back to AoS and click on image icon, click in the url box, then ctrl + v buttons got the image onto my post. Simple.
The new laptop doesn't offer this 'copy image link' option, just 'copy image' or 'copy image address', neither of which work. The best we've managed is an image link on my post, as you can see.
I might just take this back to the shop and get the tech guy to help me. And if he can't or won't, I'll just batter him round the head with it until someone more knowledgeable shows up.

What's "Acid Soul"?
I've no idea Barry. But the singer (Lady Blackbird) is pretty good, sort of modern and retro at the same time. Two or three of her songs have made the charts, but don't let that put you off. I'd try to link to a video of one of her songs for you, but my head has fallen off thanks to this new crappy lappy. I'm thinking I should have sent my old laptop to be cleaned up/refurbished. I know where I am with that one.

both selecting pic(copying) and pasting it, ... the cursor arrow has to be over the pic or pasting then over the space the tree box produces. if cursor isnt in that space then the paste wont appear. as i say a wireless mouse is much easier to use for these things.
i use thes and they are fine and cheap.

Billion Dollar Babies on vinyl? That's a nice thing to have. I bought it when it first came out, 1973 I think. My favourite AC album used to be Love it to Death, then last month I managed to get it on vinyl as well as Billion Dollar Babies on CD. Turns out that's my favourite these days, I seem to have grown into it.
I've never heard of 'Special Forces', so I'm guessing it's a later album. I stopped after Welcome to my Nightmare, though I do have 'Trash' on CD.

So my three choices for this morning couldn't be more different !
We start with the debut soundtrack album from this British singer-songwriter, guitarist and composer. Oh and also one of the best live performers I have had the great pleasure to see on a number of occasions throughout his career.

Next up another legendary singer-songwriter and his 1982 debut solo album.
The Nightfly is one of the earliest examples of fully digital recording in popular music and the efforts Fagen and his team went to to get the quality right were extraordinary !
Problems with the technology, (The Nightfly was recorded using 3M's 32-track and four-track recorders), persisted throughout the recording, particularly regarding the alignment of the 3M machines. Representatives from 3M had to be called frequently to align the machines, eventually Fagen and Nichols grew tired of this. Nichols and engineers Jerry Garsszva and Wayne Yurgelun took classes at 3M's Minnesota headquarters and returned knowing how to align the machines themselves. "I was ready to transfer to analogue and give it up on several occasions, but my engineering staff kept talking me into it," recalls Fagen.
Many of the musicians on The Nightfly had also played on Steely Dan records, including Jeff Porcaro, Rick Derringer and Larry Carlton. Similar to the Aja and Gaucho albums, a large number of studio musicians were employed, with the liner notes crediting a total of 31 musicians !

So for my last choice we go to vinyl and this thier seventh studio album from 1980. Inspired by the air drum anthem listners choice this morning on Radio2's Owain Wyn Evans early morning show.
In June 1979, the band finished its eight month tour of the United States, Canada, and Europe in support of its sixth studio album, Hemispheres (1978). The tour had taken its toll on the group and for the first time in the band's history, each member agreed to take a six week break before starting work on a new album. They regrouped in mid-July 1979 at Lakewoods Farm near Flesherton, Ontario to write and rehearse new material for two weeks.
With some material prepared for Permanent Waves, Rush moved into Sound Kitchen Studio in northern Toronto, Ontario with their producer Terry Brown to put their ideas onto tape. "The Spirit of Radio," "Freewill" and "Jacob's Ladder" were further polished on the warm-up tour during soundchecks and by early September, "The Spirit of Radio" and "Freewill" were being performed live on the band's warm-up tour in August and September 1979.
In September 1979, Rush headed to Le-Studio in Morin-Heights, Quebec to record Permanent Waves with Brown and engineer Paul Northfield. Having recorded their previous two studio albums in Wales the band felt it was time for a change and initially chose Trident Studios in London, but cancelled due to the high costs of studio time and accommodation.
The new material showed a shift in the group's sound towards more concise arrangements and radio-friendly songs (such as "The Spirit of Radio" and "Freewill"), though their progressive rock blueprint is still evident on "Jacob's Ladder" and the nine-minute closer "Natural Science." Bassist/vocalist Geddy Lee also employed a more restrained vocal delivery compared to previous albums.

Great band and innovative in the studio too. Great album, Graham Gouldman's song writing legacy is just phenomenal! He has been the band's only constant member since its formation in 1972. Before 10cc, Gouldman worked as a freelance songwriter and penned many hits for major rock and pop groups, including the Yardbirds, the Hollies, Herman's Hermits and Ohio Express.

Probably the last truly creative period in British pop, rock based anyway. Soft cell are a synth band with soul, which to me is a perfect mix.

Duran Duran - Danse Macabre. New album from one of Birmingham's finest; featuring contributions from original guitarist Andy Taylor, (who is sadly fighting terminal prostate cancer) second guitarist Warren Cuccurullo, Nile Rogers and many other people. The album presents an unusual set of songs done in different ways and is quite listenable; nothing they do now or in the future will ever top the first album, Rio or The Wedding Album (IMHO) but this new album is OK................. still not the best but, an easy listen. :thumbsup:

Last up and vinyl this time. Not a great collector of compilation albums, this one from 1983 covers many of this artists most well know early pieces.
His famous composer father (Maurice Jarre) is quoted as saying of his sons music, "elevator music", they were estranged for most of the time up to his fathers death in 2009.
Jean-Michel was the first Western artist to officially be invited to play in the People's Republic of China and holds the world record for the largest ever audience at an outdoor event for his Moscow concert on the 6th of September in 1997 attended by 3.5 million people !

Needed something I'm well familiar with to try out a phono stage (EAT E Glo Petit) I have been loaned. I might be hearing slightly more detail than with my usual ProJect Tube Box, but it's subtle. What isn't so subtle is the difference in gain. I'm having to turn up the MF A5's wick to 12 o'clock, which would normally be just enough to blow the windows out. There are various gain settings on it, but I can't get them to do anything. A call to JacHawk later methinks.

lol it's a good album but never top fifty or even top a hundred.
Mind you with Q Magazine I bet the rest of the top 50 was crammed with U2, Springsteen and REM.
Only important if you want to restrict your collection to 50 or 100 titles.
As to the other performers you list, I could and do live with few titles from them all (though to my knowledge I have only one LP from "The Boss"). ;)

Australia for October, 5 Nights in Sydney, then 18 days with Motorhome stopping 12 times driving up to Cairnes, then 6 nights at Palm Cove just North of Cairns. We had a wonderful time, did all the touristy stuff and even went to see Miss Saigon at the Sydney Opera house, and we do not like musicals, but it was very good and quite an experience, although expensive as we got 2 of the last 3 seats left. Australia trip was Sue's 60th Birthday present on the 2021 Covid lockdown, she has always wanted to go there, and it was out Ruby Wedding on 22 Oct, so lots of brown points.
That's some holiday.
Now back here to the rain and cold :)
Yes! - I'm most envious; Australia is only continent I have yet to put a foot on.
And a visit to the Sidney Opera House - can't get much better than that.

A couple of years ago I thought I'd try him out. But I totally failed to connect with it, and gave up after side one.
Today I thought I'd have a poke around some recordings that failed the first time around, and this one jumped out at me (well actually grudgingly dragged itself of the shelf). I played side one again, and nothing has happened in the two years since its first play to change my mind. But I'm persevering. So far so good, but God he's a miserable bugger.

"Is This The Life We Really Want?" is not an album I have heard either.
Certainly Waters started to write angry and depressing material before Pink Floyd split up, and yet, of the careers of the former members, it is that of Waters that most interests me.

The vinyl version (3 record set) goes for £45+, so that's not happening. My double CD copy is £6.39. The Nick Mason CD (assuming you mean the "Saucerful of Secrets" live set) is rather more expensive, probably some rarity value. But looks interesting, I'll put that on my list.

Been meaning to buy that for years, for some reason you never saw it in second hand record shops, I suppose that's a positive testimonial.
Friend of mine as a 14 year old got it as a Christmas present from his ageing parents. They wanted him to play it while they listened - knowing the language on it he made all sorts of excuses but they insisted. Ofc when Dury says 'Fuck' they went ballistic, didn't speak to him for a week.

Did you ever see the Ian Dury biopic, that is worth watching if you come across it. Andy Serkis was perfect for the part, more Ian Dury than Ian Dury himself.

Andy Serkis is, as you say, perfect as Ian Dury. It's the rest of the cast that let the film down for me.
