Next up another album that rarely sees the light of day from a fellow Canadian (of K D Lang, I mean ) !

I first saw her live in 1998 at the Wigan Jazz Festival, she was little known in the UK at the time, although Sir Michael Parkinson was certainly responsible for raising her profile and even scooped live on air in 2003 the announcement of her engagement to British New Wave legend Declan MacManus, they married later that year at Elton John's home in Windsor.

This her second album released in 1995, recorded at the Power Station NY, Krall being more than ably accompanied by a who's who of the Jazz world - Ray Brown, Christian McBride, Lewis Nash and Stanley Turrentine. Well this morning starts with an album I have to admit I can't remember when it was last played but some considerable time ago. Strangely neither the album or any of the tracks are on my phone library so it hasn't been played in the car or on the JBL Flip on a beach or terrace on holiday either !

This album released in 1992 was nominated for 6 Grammy's wining Best Female Pop Performance for Constant Craving. The album sold Platinum in New Zealand and the UK whilst going double Platinum in Australia, Canada and the US

The songs, arrangements, musicianship, engineering and vocals are sublime.

I bought this at a car boot a few years ago, and wasn't expecting much. How wrong I was. Brilliant album, quickly became one of my favourites. Everyone should have this in their collection :)

What do you want to know? Supermarkets tend to be best on price, but not necessarily quality. I prefer locally produced ( one of my regular customers always gives me free eggs), the yokes are always more yellow, and boiled with soldiers to dip in are one of my simple pleasures :)

So first up is the 1977 follow up to the career changing album 2112. The band deciding for the first time to record outside of Toronto and Canada settling on Rockfield Studios in Monmouthshire, Wales founded in 1963 (by brothers Kingsley and Charles Ward) although it wasn't until the seventies that it would host a roster of now famous groups and artists including Joan Armatrading, Black Sabbath, Dave Edmunds, Dr Feelgood, Judas Priest, Hawkwind, Mike Oldfield, Queen, Van der Graph Generator et al. The album took 3 weeks to record and was to see the bands musicianship pushed to new heights, particularly Geddy Lee's bass playing, setting each of them on course to becoming some of the most influential and inspiring muscians of the 20th century. A complete change, so next up this awsome third album from this American singer, pianist and songwritter. Her limited success in the early 80's was to change in the late 80's following her contributions to Tears for Fears International chart topping album Seeds of Love. Last we finish with vinyl and this original release pressing from 1981. Featuring the now iconic track Start Me Up which reached number 2 on the US Billboard chart. Produced by the Glimmer Twins (Jagger and Richards) and featuring a host of famous guest muscians including original Stones founding member Ian Stewart along with Billy Preston, Pete Townshend, Sonny Rollins, Michael Carabello, etc. We should also mention the who's who of technical collaboration, Glyn Johns, Andy Johns, Keith Harwood, Bob Clearmountain and Bob Ludwig et al.

The album sales only went Gold in the UK and most other territories except 2 x Platinum in Australia and 4 x Platinum in Canada and the US !

Cheers Loz, the bands we saw last weekend re-ignited my interest in Rock, (though not to the exclusion of everything else). And it's the one genre me and Anita are both agreed on :)

It was your good self that got me interested in Japan - and for the second time I'm buying David Sylvian's "Brilliant Trees", after my first attempt (from some Numpty on Ebay who left me disc-less, inconvenienced and out of pocket) failed miserably. So now I have one heading my way from Music Magpie, who may now be the only seller I bother with!

As for igniting your interest in Japan, you're very welcome; glad to be of service !! :thumbsup: The Remaster of Brilliant Trees is very good; I also have the original CD (and Vinyl) :D aswell - hard to choose between the two as I like the analogue sound of the original but the RM just lifts the edges etc and gives it a slight freshness.

And yes, Led Zeppelin were one of the greatest rock bands to ever take to the stage; better musically than most others (even The Stones or The Beatles) !!!!!

Ultravox - Rage In Eden. I cannot express how good I think the first 4 Albums by Ultravox (with Midge Ure) are!!! SUBLIME!!!

Having said that, I quite like 'Songs from the Wood' (1977).

This album ("Stormwatch") was released September 1979, more than two years after The Sex Pistols' "God Save The Queen", so the backlash was well underway.

I read that it was the third of a trio of folk rock albums that started with the "Songs from the Wood" you mention and continued with "Heavy Horses", and was the last album to include the full Tull lineup - the bass player John Glascock was seriously ill at the time and only contributed to part of the album, and died soon after.

I always liked the look of the "Thick as a Brick" album sleeve (John & Yoko's "Some Time in New York City" similarly appealed, though I did resist it as I did eventually hear it and thought it was a bit cack).

"Thick as..." will go on my Christmas wish list, along with albums from King Crimson, Blind Faith, also Waka/Jawaka, all of which passed me by first time around.

Still my favourite Genesis live album and takes me back to the first time I saw them live in the late 70's. I knew the "old" songs (The Cage, I Know What I Like, Suppers Ready et al) with Collins vocals before I really knew the Gabriel versions.

I started out 3 months ago, buying a copy from a private seller on Ebay. Fiver plus £1.85 postage. A week later I received something else altogether. He'd sent my CD to someone else and I got theirs. So after a bit of back and forth I returned this wrong CD to him at my cost, and waited. And waited.

After a few weeks I chased up the seller, who then promptly refunded my fiver and to his credit offered to stump up the postage. He also told me he never received the CD I'd returned. Maybe he'll take more care in future with his despatching. Just more hassle than it's worth, using dopey private sellers for cheap items.

So back to Music Magpie, £5.12 inc postage, and it arrived three days later. No brainer really. Oh and the CD gets a few of these:thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup: - can't really categorise it, it seems to be sometimes a bit jazzy sometimes a bit ambient. Ambient Jazz?? Not sure where to go next though.

A band that should have made it big, they had a cult following including me back in the day. They released 9 albums, I know the first three very well, they used to bang out of my Panasonic car cassette player in my split screen VW camper on my regular surfing trips down to Croyde in Devon from London. I would describe their sound as a mix of Joy Division, early U2, with a Bauhaus feel on some songs, and a tinge of Simple Minds. Great stuff!!

Rather please, their albums on vinyl can be hard to pick up in good condition, and came across this NM/NM copy yesterday for a sensible £12.

Well I would say it is hard to tell the difference, with the exception that the re-release is quieter on run in. There is the odd crackle on the 1st press, but nothing to affect the listening enjoyment.

Your 1st press will be noticeably thinner vinyl than your 180g remastered one - have you found it to have an audible effect on your VTA? I know you have put a lot of time and effort into getting the setup just right.

Given the choice I would always prefer to have the originals, but getting decent copies is always a bit of a lottery. Even pricy examples which the seller claims to be NM can be a disappointment.

They released 9 albums, I know the first three very well, they used to bang out of my Panasonic car cassette player in my split screen VW camper on my regular surfing trips down to Croyde in Devon from London. I would describe their sound as a mix of Joy Division, early U2, with a Bauhaus feel on some songs, and a tinge of Simple Minds. Great stuff!!

Rather please, their albums on vinyl can be hard to pick up in good condition, and came across this NM/NM copy yesterday for a sensible £12.

Your 1st press will be noticeably thinner vinyl than your 180g remastered one - have you found it to have an audible effect on your VTA? I know you have put a lot of time and effort into getting the setup just right.

Given the choice I would always prefer to have the originals, but getting decent copies is always a bit of a lottery. Even pricy examples which the seller claims to be NM can be a disappointment.

From my understanding all this business about VTA issues between differing vinyl thickness is a bit of a red-herring, although getting it right in the first place is pretty important.

I generally setup my cartridge using a mid thickness lp, weighing in around 140gm, I set it up with the tonearm/head shell parallel to the record and then I dial it in adjusting up or down until I hear the sweet spot , for me anyway, by listening to very well known track. I then try a 180gm and the a well know 120gm and if they sound good then leave well alone. Its all about the SRA(stylus rack angle) which governs the angle of the stylus in the groove, assuming that the stylus is correctly fitted to the cantilever and is at 90 degree to it. Stylus rack angles vary depending on manufacturer and I think stylus type.

As I have said elsewhere getting the azimuth right is also very important as this determines if the stylus is equally hitting each groove wall equally, if off at an angle it will sound odd and may even distort or possibly track badly. Most people use the mirror under the stylus method to check the cantilever is not at a weird angle and is set up correctly, I find this quite tricky to do well, it is easier with some carts than others IMO.

Going back to the VTA adjustment, this can be quite limited with certain arms/TTs, shims under the mounting post or even under the cartridge to head shell are not unheard of solutions, neither of which I would choose to live with unless I loved the TT/Arm combo and was not going to change the cartridge much. If you have a fixed head shell or an all in one arm, this has its benefits - more stable and rigid, possible better sonically, but it can limit correct Azimuth set up, although there are some solutions out there that allow the cartridge to be canted on the head shell, effectively mounted it on a shim with a central fulcrum, not something I would be that happy with personally.

Made things so much easier I think, though easier than what i don't know - in my 45 years of interest in hifi this was the first time I'd ever changed a cartridge! How on earth did that (not) happen?

I seem to have it set up ok, sounds good to me. Could it be better? Almost certainly, but I'm not blessed with bolden ears, so I'll never know... unless one day you find yourself driving north and get a sudden craving for Jaffa Cakes and a brew :D

That digital microscope looks really interesting, for all kinds of things. I think it might just be the ideal Christmas pressie for me, unless I can think of someone else to buy it for (then borrow it from) ;)

Featuring Arne Domnérus, alto sax, clarinet; Bengt Hallberg, piano; Lars Erstrand, vibes; Georg Riedel, bass; and Egil Johansen, drums. Considered by many as one of the best sounding Jazz albums of the 20th Century.

I have both albums on vinyl (this one and volume 2) and I have this one on cd too and then there's the 30th Anniversary SACD Hybrid 4 CD box set on its way too !

The song reached number one in the UK in 1968 and became a staple of his many live shows.

IMHO they are all pretty good, and each has its own signature in some way, I, II & III epitomise them for me. Runes as you say may be considered a more commercial approach, possibly because of ‘Stairway to Heaven’. ‘Houses of the Holy’ I think is reminiscent of encapsulating aspects of III & Runes(IV). ‘Physical Graffiti’ is interesting because it has aspects of nearly all their earlier works rhythmically and musically but in near material. Presence, a much maligned album IMO has some great material, I think it got a bad press as it was perceived as more of the same. I also really like ‘In Through The Outdoor’ a darker heavier approach with throwbacks to a Phys Gaff feel, not so keen on CODA. Would be interesting to know what the band think.

Assited by Keter Betts on Double Bass, Buddy Deppenschmidt on Drums, Gene Byrd on Guitar and Bass, Bill Reichenbach Sr. On Drums.

This album signaled the beginning of the Bossa Nova craze in the USA.

Maybe they think of it more as an investment because the coloured vinyls are usually limited to a certain amount of pressings and they obviously increase in value as time passes due to their rarity so, the potential for money making.

I, on the other hand, only buy records to play and not as an investment. And IMO any colour other than black would make cuing difficult.

Me too.

I have maybe half a dozen or so on coloured vinyl, and none of them were bought deliberately. Just got them home to find them so. With the exception being Kraftwerk's "Tour De France" which came with blue and red discs. That's the one time I knew what was coming.

I haven't found coloured vinyl to sound worse, but then it hasn't been better. So I don't see the point other than it being a marketing gimmick.

The only one that sounds really terrible is Eurythmics' first album which has a picture printed on it, and the vinyl is really stiff like a 78. That is all but unplayable.

So we start the day with this truly iconic album from 1971, recorded in Studio A at the Power Plant New York The album is dedicated to the late Buddy Holly and has a slightly melancholy feel with sparse arrangements. Producer Ed Freeman, decided to use accomplished musicians who were not "studio musicians who could act like a metronome" because he wanted to capture the feel of a "band that was really cooking," so he rented a rehearsal studio and they rehearsed the title song for two weeks before they recorded it !

Next up an album that few if any rock music fans can claim not to have heard the title track !

Having sold over 43 million copies worldwide the album has a folk lore story.

Steinman and Meat Loaf had difficulty finding a record company willing to sign them. According to Meat Loaf's autobiography, the band spent most of 1975 writing and recording material, and two and a half years auditioning the record and being rejected. Manager David Sinenberg joked that they were creating record companies just so they could be rejected.

They performed the album live in 1976, with Steinman on piano, Meat Loaf singing, and sometimes Ellen Foley joining them for "Paradise". Steinman says that it was a "medley of the most brutal rejections you could imagine." Meat Loaf "almost cracked" when CBS executive Clive Davis rejected the project. According to Meat Loaf's autobiography, Davis commented that "actors don't make records" and challenged Steinman's writing abilities and knowledge of rock music:

Do you know how to write a song? Do you know anything about writing? If you're going to write for records, it goes like this: A, B, C, B, C, C. I don't know what you're doing. You're doing A, D, F, G, B, D, C. You don't know how to write a song.... Have you ever listened to pop music? Have you ever heard any rock-and-roll music.... You should go downstairs when you leave here...and buy some rock-and-roll records.

Meat Loaf asserts "Jim, at the time, knew every record ever made. He is a walking rock encyclopedia." Although Steinman laughed off the insults, the singer screamed "F..k you, Clive!" from the street below his office.

In one 1989 interview with Classic Rock magazine, Steinman labeled Todd Rundgren "the only genuine genius I've ever worked with." In a 1989 interview with Redbeard for the*In the Studio with Redbeard episode on the making of the album, Meat Loaf revealed that Jimmy Iovine and Andy Johns were potential candidates for producing Bat Out of Hell before being rejected by the singer and Steinman in favor of Todd Rundgren, whom Meat Loaf initially found cocky but grew to like. Rundgren found the album hilarious, thinking it was a parody of Springsteen. The singer quotes him as saying: "I've 'got' to do this album. It's just so 'out' there." They told the producer that they had previously been signed to RCA.

We as usual close with vinyl and this 1983 debut solo album from British born guitarist and one time Thin Lizzy band member Terence Charles "Snowy" White. It includes the song "Bird of Paradise", which reached No. 6 on the UK charts when it was released as a single.
