Agree about The Police (or as they're known now, 'Sting.').
Not listened to much Dan lately so time to remedy that with this offering from 1976:
https://i.ibb.co/HdPGTjQ/scam.jpg (https://imgbb.com/)
You got Babylon Sisters last week, no need to be greedy... having said that, I'm going for 40 minutes of Dan now, with this - most folk's favourite looks to be Aja, but this is mine. Especially The Boston Rag. We like what we like :)

'Countdown' is lots of people's favourite I think especially those who weren't keen on the move to lounge jazz with Aja.
Anyway, done all my jobs for the day including helping a new neighbour (just moved here from S.A) to buy a car, so now this:

Great choice - I remember the first time I heard this, coming out of my mate's brother's new Spendor BC1s. It sounded just right. Still got the album, but it's a bit crackly these days, I ought to get a new copy.

Henry Cow - Legend, and the one with the sock on the cover, oh, they've both got socks on the cover. And the live one called 'Concerts'.

I have most of their albums, been a fan since 70's, I like all of them but personally I really like Thrak which is from 1995, it is a more aggressive sound, quite edgy in parts, but very good IMO. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Thrak-200gm-Vinyl-King-Crimson/dp/B07WMM8X9Q/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1D0ZUMU6UCVUN&keywords=king+crimson+thrak+vinyl&qid=1687860673&sprefix=Thrak+%2Caps%2C84&sr=8-3

It says on the inlay card "Dedicated to Paul Young 1947-2000". That's really confusing - last time I saw him on telly I thought he was looking a bit rough, didn't think he was dead though.

Ok, I get it now. Different Paul Young. This one was with Mike and the Mechanics, and died from a brain tumour in 2000, aged 52. This CD seems to be a tribute to him. And I have to say that so far, it's pretty good :) Shame it has to go back, but someone probably paid good money for this, quite a bit more than my Sylvian CD cost me.

I lost track of the Stones' output after 'Exile on Main Street' (1972). I should 'catch up' - is 'Emotional Rescue' any good, and what other later Stones records would you recommend?
Cheers

Stones albums I like:
Beggars Banquet
Exile On Main Street
Sticky Fingers
Let It Bleed
Some Girls
Emotional Rescue
Not keen on what went before or what's come since.
Exile, Bleed and Fingers are the Holy Trinity of Stones albums IMO and probably some of the best stuff ever done by anyone ever.
I warn you now 'Some Girls' and 'Emotional Rescue' are 'disco era' Stones. I liked it when they went disco but some hate it. Although regardless of that Emotional Rescue is worth it for 'All About You' alone:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/All_About_You_(Rolling_Stones_song)
On the writing, Richards said, "That song was hanging around for three years. After researching to make sure it wasn't somebody else who wrote it, I finally decided that it must have been me".

Ah - I have all the highlighted titles. :)
I know what you mean about the 'disco' period - that was a direction largely pushed for by Mick Jagger; the rest of the Stones just went along with him, hoping that the phase would pass!
Thanks

Great band - I only have this and 'Live From Fillmore West' always meant to get some of their others but not got round to it.
I used to have a copy of 'Stonedhenge', but only really liked the track 'Speed Kills'. My neighbour in the house I was sharing as a student, did like it. So much so I gave him my copy as he would enjoy it more than me.

When I'm at home, the system is on more or less from 'dawn to dusk'. The only time it is off is when I watch TV or want to read.

Agree 100%. Besides, I work best in the morning, before the aches and pains catch up with me. But students have a different body clock to normal folk. They're the reason sign language midgets were devised for morning telly, so students would know it was bedtime.

This is the original CD release from the 1980s so you have to crank the volume up a bit - no loudness wars back then.
Yes it has 'Wonderful Tonight' but there's some good stuff on it too.

Not my sort of thing it's too electronic for me. Don't mind a bit of mellow electronica (Thievery Corporation, that sort of thing) but that's full on.

I'm pretty sure I have but I had a quick look and can't find the other. I just might be getting mixed up with 'Avalon' which is a similar cover.
You can have my vinyl copy if you want. Not sure if it's an original pressing but it's deffo an early one and quite minty.

Thanks Mart, but don't be pillaging your retirement plan for something I may or may not like. That sort of thing can only increase in value... Edit: I'm streaming it right now, and I do like it, so I'll have a look on Music Magpie for a CD copy :)
Cover does look a lot like Avalon I agree.
There's a lot of stuff from that era which passed me by, like King Crimson, Humble Pie, Blind Faith - 'discovering' albums by such bands should keep me busy for a while, and make up for the lack of anything new worth bothering with. I only discovered Little feat recently, and that worked out quite well :)

nah you can have it plenty more where that came from.
Little Feat are ace, I don't have any of theirs on CD though. Like you say plenty of old bands I've never got round to, don't really need new music, although it's always good if you find a gem amongst the dross and the 'heard it all before.'

:) Thank you so much, that's very generous :) As I have mentioned before, I've started buying more CDs and less vinyl, as prices are starting to take the piss...

Thanks for that Grant, But I hadn't even considered vinyl. As I never go for anything described as less than 'Excellent', and prices for minty examples of anything these days are going through the roof.
And I've just noticed, there are currently 27 listings for this record on Ebay, 25 of which are located in the US. With reasonable asking prices, but twenty-odd quid postage costs. Must think we're stupid.
Had winning bid on a CD copy earlier, cost me a fiver with the postage. That'll do for me :) Even though CD prices look to be on the increase too.

Hendrix was angry when he found out about the original cover - but in those days the recording companies had total control over everything.
My copy has the original cover, and I have to say some of the models do look 'uncomfortable' with their poses.
Pigmy Pony

So did the double album with the models come out first? I'd always assumed my old copies which were two separate albums would have been the originals.
One strange thing about my double album with the models: The sides are arranged across the two discs so that presumably you could put both discs on an autochanger record deck and follow side one with side two without any swapping over, if that makes any sense.
I was unaware that Electric Ladyland had been issued as two separate LPs.
I think the new cover was done for the American Market; to protect their delicate sensibilities. Record shops there probably tired of selling the LP in a brown paper bag.
My copy is the double with the gatefold sleeve, distributed by Track Record (a division of Polydor) in 1968.
It too has the four sides (labelled A to D) arranged for playing on an autochanger, which was not uncommon at the time

Yes the ones I had in the early 70s were as the images I put up in post #26209. It looks like the double with the naked models may have come before them. And American censorship sounds like a plausible reason.
According to Wikipedia there are at least 3 different 'original' covers which varied depending on the label. The nude cover was done for Tracks.
Hendrix wanted a completely different photo to any of those actually used for the covers, but it was vetoed.
Also says that the side arrangement across the 2 discs was done for autochangers.

Yes, my poke around tinternet confirms what you're saying.
One other thing that might interest some: if the text on the inside of the 'models' cover is blue, it is worth a lot more than if it's white. Though really life's too short to be concerned with such nonsense.

Karen Carpenter
CD
Yes, the sound is "dated" but absolutely what one would have expected at the time. Her layered background vocals on this one are extraordinary and executed with utter precision. I'm a jaded musician and these BGV's make my jaw drop. Yes, 2 or 3 songs seem completely out of place. Minus those, in 1980, she could have given any number of female pop vocalists a run for their money, if not made them look altogether foolish. They should have tweaked, finished, properly mixed and mastered this one and let it fly. Shame on A&M. Listen with headphones... goodness gracious.

It's the 'Hendrix Family Authorised Edition' remastered from the original tapes with 24 page booklet'.
No tits on show, not allowed to have tits on album covers in our progressive liberal/fascist brave new world, but I do have the original vinyl gatefold with the proper cover.
On this side of the pond, it's the liberals who want to walk around with things flapping and dangling in your face... and want you to like it. But, yes... someone beat me to it. Hendrix was not fond of that cover. I can't blame him. Though said label executives were not the first to play the game of "just put a chick on the cover and it'll sell", whatever they were going for, I do believe backfired.

I read that the models were paid £5 to go topless, or £10 if they would go naked. One of the models in a later interview said: "Everyone looked great, but the picture makes us look old and tired. We were trying to look sexy, but it didn't work out. It makes us look like a load of old tarts. It's rotten".
I have to agree, they look like "readers' wives". I'd happily swap my original double album for the later separate single albums in a shot. On my shoulder I have a tattoo of Jimi Hendrix... it's not very good, Jimi looks more like newsreader Trevor McDonald, but even that would make better and more relevant album art.

I was going to say I thought they all looked a bit rough. According to wikipedia Hendrix didn't like it but 'Dug' it anyway.
He thought the cover for 'Axis' was disrespectful so didn't like that one either.
Funny how one of the most creative geniuses that ever lived didn't get to choose his album covers.

Absolutely horrible cover, good thing the music is better. Won't get fooled again, what a blinder.

Hmm, there's an idea for a thread. Best and worst album covers.

I never liked the cover for 'Axis', thought it was horribly 'kitsch', but regard it as his best LP.

I think we might have done a 'worst', or most disgraceful-looking cover thread in the past.

Yes, as soon as I'd typed it I thought that may be the case.
Anyway, just been listening to my latest arrival:

As albums covers go, this is certainly not the worst I've seen, but I'm not sure what two pigeons atop a flying rock have to do with anything. And the sleevenotes are so bog basic looking I thought at first the seller might have knocked this up on his pc.
But I liked the album. Bit of a wonky start, but soon gets into its stride. Decent recording for its age too.

Don't normally listen to 70s American rock/pop, but I loved a track off this LP so much, had to buy it, 'Dirty Work', then I discover the first track is a classic of radio stations everywhere, 'Do it again', so nice to hear it on a home hifi system rather than a tinny radio.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Dan. Can't decide whether it's well-polished AOR, or if it's more than that. Despite my doubts, I have all their LPs.

I remember being round my mate's on a Saturday afternoon and his older sister coming back from town with that record - had to look it up - 1982!
