There is just something about how Mr Numan constructs his music and songs that works, sweeping synths, driving beats, and thundering bass. Simple but very effective, sometimes less is more, very clever IMO

So here is an oddity from the Prog Rock World - The Pentateuch of the Cosmogony (The Birth and Death of a World). Maybe not everyones cuppa tea but well worth a listen.
Some of you may know of Mr Greenslade from Coleseum or the band Greenslade, this offering was inspired by the drawings and words of David Woodroffe. The double LP is probably as progy as anyone can get, it is a complete and total concept both from a pictorial, written and musical form. It is effectively a story of how the solar system came into being and mankind. It mixes sci-fi with a fight for good and evil and the involvement of a god. It is very allegorical in its approach. The album comes in the form of a book with 2 LPs, the intention is to read the book and listen to the music at the same time. The drawings and paintings are quite wonderful and the music is pretty good all instruments played by Dave Greenslade, primarily electronic keyboards, moons and tubular bells, and church organ, drums on some tracks are by Phil Collins. Some of the music verges on orchestral composition, and some has a pop and rock feel, it is all quite expressive.
There is a very prophetic comment and poem at the end of the book care of Patrick Woodroffe
Man is a danger, though less of a danger to the universe than to himself.
Man is in danger.
As the angel, in Haydn's oratorio "The Creation" warned Adam and Eve when they were given custody of the garden.
O happy pair, and happy evermore
Provided folly lead you not astray
To wish for more than you have
Or more to know than for you good.

It is an interesting listening, some tracks very good and others I dont get. As a whole its very good, and obviously a lot of effort went into producing it. A good collectors piece. A bit like Godley and Cremes - Consequences which I actually think is superb.

An often and sadly overlooked album! No. 335[6] on its List of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. In an early 1987 Rolling Stone list of their top 100 albums from 1967 to 1987, Squeezing Out Sparks was ranked at No. 45. I saw them live in 78, I think at the at the famous Hope and Anchor.
Graham Parker was/is often compared to Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson, but he actually was there before either of them cam along on the scene. IMO opinion he could have easily have been as big a Costello if he had kept producing great lyrics with a hard edge.

Hi Adrian,
I made a mistake in quoting the title of Woodroffe's book. It's 'Mythopoeikon': https://www.amazon.co.uk/Mythopoeikon-Patrick-Woodroffe/dp/067122932X.

Thanks Steve, I think I had been rather lucky over the last 3-4 years, I picked up a lot of LPs for £2-4 in pretty good to nam condition, in 2nd hand and charity shops in a 15 mile radius. 1 was als given about 400 lps from 3 people. Sadly it seems to have dried up in the shops, and what is there people are asking silly money or they are crap. The hospiscare warehouse in Honiton has stopped selling vinyl, they have got some one valuing and sell big online, what is worthless to sell goes fro the-cycling at £1/kg and the get about 100kg a month, so around 800lps scrapped. I have started to buy re-issues selectively, but cost is prohibitive. .

This is the complete concert on 3 LP's as performed on the night at the Albert Hall, it is extremely good and very well recorded IMO and worth a serious listen to. having sorted out my cartridge and arm set up since last playing it and now it has really come to life, especially the orchestral parts, I think I need to explore more of my collection. :)

Pet Shop Boys Discography (the complete singles collection) from 1991 on the go right now as i sip slowly on a fresh black coffee ....not listened to this for perhaps a couple of years ...my my they are bringing back memories of long nights and early mornings hearing these tracks played much too loud in clubs in my rather younger days .. :)
"In spite of ourselves" is a good album ... my preference is "For better or worse" which seems to swing a little more to me .... having said that a bit of John Prine always goes down well to my ears enjoy your listening Grant :)

I have tried several copies of this album, and ended up keeping this Canadian pressing as it was the best I tried, smaller print run. I found the UK ones to not be very good, noise and on one distorted bad pressing. I think due to the volumes pressing SQ was not great and also it is a long album.

Having a bit of a Genesis moment, not everyones cuppa tea, especially the later stuff, but IMO they did generally did some pretty good stuff, and from their records sales I think millions of others agreed.

For those of you who are not familiar with this then it is well worth a listen, stunning production and mix, its basically stunning vocals from Sister Sledge with Chic, and Nile Rodgers being the driving force I suspect, doing his magic. Whether you like this or not I think it will be a classic for all time.

Sinatra "A Man Alone"...sung with such feeling .....Rod McKuen who wrote it all words & music beautifully arranged by Don Costa from March 19-21st 1969, the 3 sessions ran 8-11pm each night after which he and a few invited others would go drinking until the dawn.
It is interesting to think that Sinatra who was known to support black muscians since his time touring with Bands early on in his career, often refusing to appear at venues that didn't allow the black artists such as Count Basie & his orchestra to enter the building using the same entrance as the white artists and having dressing rooms in the same corridor, chose at this time in his career to support an openly LGBT poet and music writer by recording an album entirely of his work, perhaps not incidentily Sinatra was in the fullest sense considering his retirement at this time having told Paul Anker in Dec 68 when listening to a demo of 'My Way' while filming 'Tony Rome' ..."I think i've had it with all this...a time to sit back and do other things is calling" ...and in the States then the "gay movement" was getting louder so perhaps it wasn't just the sublime lyrics and music that seemed to be written perfectly for Sinatra (which it was as McKuen freely stated) that was his total motivation in making this album.....
Well apologies i've rambled on ....However the main thing is to enjoy the music for the music and this album is one i return to often its sad and beautiful in equal measure to my ears

As I said, with the exception of The Levellers, all were bought 'on spec'. At 50p each, I'm always willing to take a punt on something that interests me.
I do rather like it, though there is nothing exceptional about it. A bit too early to decide whether to keep it or not - it need another spin or two. As an aside, why do some modern CDs (as this one) have 'Easter eggs' recorded at the end? What is the point of it?
'Emotional Rescue' is one of the better of the Stones later albums. I'm afraid I started to loose interest after 'Exile on Main Street'.

No worries, and yes EM is rather good. I have all the Stones albums on vinyl, and like you prefer their earlier stuff, but also don't discount their more recent output. My favourite track on EM is 'Down in the Hole', as it's just so raw and bluesy:
https://youtu.be/a0FfyrIhyLA
And it sounds really awesome on my system! :guitar::guitar:
I 'found' them late [much like many bands from the 60s and 70s], because as an '80s boy', all that type of music largely passed me by, so have only really been appreciating it for the last 20 years or so...
Anyway, next up tonight, some classic Zappa (on original vinyl):

:( You're just playing this to wind me up - you know I'm on the lookout for a nice copy. Or maybe you're playing it because it's great. I do have "Killer" on vinyl (played it last week), just want "Love it..." and "Billion Dollar Babies" and I'll be a happy bunny. Trouble is, I could only settle for a complete copy, with all the bits. Because I'm sad that way.

No loss, I would not have sold them if I still played them. In my teenage years I soon sold albums I not longer liked.

Good album. I was going through Boz Scaggs albums last week, he has quite a catalog of decent ones, some are very expensive to buy on cd though. His last album I really like: Out Of the Blues.

Never come across whatrecords before thank you for bringing them to my attention ....not to mention the Eva records too ....
I'm listening early today and currently got a compilation cd running 'Pure Genius" 40 of the worlds greatest singer songwriters ...a 2000 collection of hits ranging from Labi Siffre to Paul Wella ...its a surprisingly well mastered cd with some tracks being better on it than the artists own albums to my ears ..although i don't think it wad ever sold as being an audiphile recording ..

Tim the owner is very helpful, and I find the prices pretty good, buying individuals is not cost effective, but max P&P cost is £8 by DPD so buying 8 or more it is good value IMO. Sometimes he has to order in records, so if you have not received after a week an email maybe worth while to check, sometimes he will split orders if records may take longer to come in.

It's a great album IMO, quite a few of the tracks have a vaudeville feel to them, presumably a reflection of influences on the band, and the lyrics are quite tongue in cheek.

Actually got to sit down and listen to this today, cost me £3.99 off ebay +£4 P&P, I was cleaning some other records this morning so did this as well. I have to say that this is a rather stunning Mike Oldfield album, it's the first where the whole album is not a concept. Crises, all of side 1 is excellent, some thunderous drumming at the end to test speakers out, and overall the dynamics are superb. Side 2 is 5 songs with the famous Moonlight Shadow, all are rather good.
If you like Oldfield the this is one to have IMHO.

Well this is a rather annoying record, it is an original PF - Animals and the vinyl looks great condition, but there is a but, which is why I re-cleaned it this morning. Result is it definitely has less surface noise (crackle). What is odd is that it is perfectly fine for half a track or so and then in comes crackle and pop for a bit and then is OK again. I have looked at it carefully under a very bright light and reckon that it has suffered from a smokey room many years ago. Its not terrible just annoying. So I think it will have to undergo a super clean and see if it improves a bit more. I have had one or two vinyls like this before and with perseverance have clean up in the end, so fingers crossed.

I'm picturing loosened crap being dragged along the groove by the stylus, until it accumulates into audible clumps of crap. I'm probably wrong, but further cleans as you say, may be the answer.
Good heads up with the Mike Oldfield record, I'm off to Ebayville to get a copy :)

Hi all,Eva Cassidy Nightbird (The entire Blues Alley performance) while waiting for any comments on the 45rpm album on another forum i pulled the trigger as i saw it at £69.99 it arrived saturday and gets its first outing today as the weekend was a full on family time as the last weekend that more than 6 can gather in England ... we made it into an early Xmas do for the 13 of us too ..just in case ..well i digress ...
back to topic ..i'm playing while i type ..but both sides of disc 1 (of the 7) sound fantastic ..Eva's voice is sooo clean with good separation particularly of Eva's voice and the drummers bass, cymbals and piano so far ...I'll update full thoughts in dc (that's due course)
Only negatives so far observed ....
1) That the center hole on the record (if thats the correct term) is very tight for my spindle....TT is Atmo Sfera High End Edition so i think its spindle is well machined.... so i have to 'support' the record and player as i push the record on and again when i remove it... but i've read others comment on this before about these issues for this release on the 33rpm version so i guess its something i'll have to live with as returning the album won't in all probability get me records that have holes that are an easy fix..
2) All the discs are somewhat warped, which i think might of caused more of a problem if my TT had a platter but as mine is a platterless design with quite a range of articulation the needle, so far i'm on disc 2 and its not causing any audible issues ...

Hi, my copy is perfect which I was given as a birthday pressie 2 years ago. If they are warped I would return them and ask for a replacement copy, bad storage is likely to have caused the issue. A couple of mine were tight on the sold left but eased off after a couple of plays. Cheers Adrian

Use a pencil in the hole. It will extend hole safely. Just put in and turn as you push. A common problem

Thanks for the thoughts ....so far the warping isn't affecting the music and that's what matters most ....and the TT is my long term keeper (bought directly from Duncan Saul formally of Intimate Audio a good man who told me of its uncanny ability) , its ability to play far more warped records has helped with some of my teen (70's) albums that have been treated ....well shall we say badly mis-treated over getting on for 50 years from time on a beach with a battery TT in late summer 78 i seem to remember ...sand and records a great mix

Thanks Grant thats a great tip ....looking for a pencil as soon as i can drag myself away from the music ..which is difficult right now i've never heard Eva sound so good ..
