The The - Soul Mining

Quite a few years since I listened to this. Still sounds as great today as it did in 1983. Fantastic stuff.

Stereo beatles are digital

At the start of the restoration process, engineers conducted extensive tests before copying the analog master tapes into the digital realm using 24-bit/192 kHz resolution and a Prism A-D converter. Dust build-ups were removed from tape machine heads after the completion of each title. Artifacts such as electrical clicks, microphone vocal pops, excessive sibilance, and poor edits were improved upon as long as it was determined that doing so didn’t at all damage the integrity of the songs. Similarly, de-noising technology was applied

turntable/cart combo I seem to use the most at the moment is a JVC QLY3F/AT15Sa with an original NOS stylus. I'll keep a watch out for a 150 now :D

I'm listen to the Rolling Stones in Mono box set. The sound of these Mono tracks is purely awesome. The best remastered set I've ever heard. Even if your not a Stones fan, you must listen. One of the standout tracks for me is 2000 Light Years From Home from the Satanic Majesties Request album. Bass you've never heard so clear I promise. A superb remaster if ever there is one, and in MONO.
Using Tidal, now there is another surprise, I might even carry on subscribing.

I had a mate years ago who was a good classical and jazz pianist and guitarist. He was obsessed with Al Di Meola, Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke. He played little else on his sound system. Never quite got into it myself.

That's the one! Actually some good stuff, really like their 'money' album regardless what their name does or does not stand for. I actually do like Depeche Mode as well. I discovered KMFDM when they opened for Ministry (one of my all time favorite bands).

Overall very good,no surface noise, criticism would be loosish ,one note kind of bass - but I listen through valves and that is a criticism of valve systems so may not be a valid criticism.More observation than criticism really, and take nothing from an exellent album. The quieter ,acoustic parts ARE very good [imo]

Mike Oldfield's Wonderland....Mike Oldfield.....Virgin Records Benelux Copy .....A 1981 complilation of Mike's career up till this date...At this point his major works were complete and he was heading for a change of direction. These tracks encompass the time that Tom Newman recards as Mike's goldern era , which was for Mike a very painful time mentally .....Strangely enough Mike produced some of his best works at this time and never really recaptured that creativity again.
This complilation is quite interesting as it appears to feature a few minor remixes !

Attic Thoughts......Bo Hansson.......Sire.......US Copy This is a "much off the beaten track" record from 1974.....Hanssen is best known for his album of works inpired by "Lord Of The Rings" and even that is not mainstream. Bo Hanssen is a multi instrumentalist who favours largely instrumental work of the progressive rock nature. His Nordic origins are reflected in his work giving it a somewhat stark projrction of his themes. There is ice and smow in his approach to the ideas that he wishes to put across to the listener even though the titles of the tracks do not directly show this. The music is largely guitat keyboards and drums .His style is to use his keyboards in a gentle but cold way to busk around the themes that have been suggested to him whilst meditating in his attic on various ideas. An interesting listen but not compulsive. It improves with repeated listening but, it is not much more than an interesting listen.:)

Essentually a fussion of jazz, classical and modern instrumental work, these recordings are a cult thing. Windham Hill represents the US movement and was centred around a recoding studio located in California.......The brain child of William Ackerman it became a base for like minded musicians to explore the path already built by modern jazz and classical musicians and extend it with a more organic and creative kind of music which would be the basis for a new direction music for mindfulness and meditation which reflects the seasons and the feel of nature.........:)

...and what a listen it is. Been trying to get a copy at a decent price for 4 months and it arrived yesterday (Mint). :)

The Mars Volta are very difficult to categorise, you will either love or hate them. They are certainly thought provoking. Some I suspect will consider them pretentious or execessive. if anyone asked me who I would compare them with then I would answer "A modern King Crimson".

The Bedlam of Goliath is their 4th album, which I came across by chance and is my entry point to them, I have been told that their first De-Loused at the Comotorium is the best to start with, but I like a challenge. Bedlam is certianly a challenging listen, with lots of cross rhythms in places, with soaring hi and lows from the vocals. The dynamics of the music stretch the hi-fi big time. After a listen through once I would say the songs paint a picture of what the band say they experienced when on tour playing around with a ouija board purchased in a junk shop in Jerusalem. Whether true or just a clever bit of publicity the songs and feel of the music are certainly menacing in places and paint a vivid and intense frightening feeling of fear and control.

if you like a challenge and interesting music, get your pennies out.

Great choice Adrian, and very nice write up!
I have never thought about the King Crimson analogy but why not?
I have, and like, most of The Mars Volta albums but find it difficult to name a favorite. I see them as "listen through" works though.

Hergest Ridge.....Mike Oldfield.....Virgin Records.....UK first pressing Benelux sleeve.
....
This is close to a first pressing and as such contains the original mix of Hergest ridge which is significantly different to the later issues. Mike remixed the album for the “Boxed” release and as such abandoned the original mix until it’s recent reissue in his Mercury reissues. Mike was never really comfortable with Hergest Ridge at times he has said that he was uncomfortable with it and “bored” during it’s recording. It was the follow up to the highly successful “Tubular Bells” which was always going to be a difficult act to follow.

Hergest Ridge is the name of a beautiful place just on the Welsh border and it was the place Mike withdrew to when he tried to escape the publicity and notoriety of his early success. It is a wild desolate place which has great natural beauty which is captured in this record.
The original mix has a rawer quality about it than the remix(es), which somehow reflects more the feel of the landscape of Hergest Ridge. In addition there are instruments and sections that are more prominent in this mix and this is lost in the remixes.

Sadly, Hergest Ridge was produced in 1974 and to get a good clean copy is a difficult. This was the height of the oil crisis and as such many of the pressings are on poor recycled vinyl. The copy I have although cleaned well and in good shape visibly is still quite noisy. However, an early 1974 copy is well worth seeking out so that you can enjoy the beauty and rawness of the original mix.

It is easy to see that CD benefited Hergest Ridge....it is an album which sadly was a classical based piece of music which had been subject to poor quality vinyl which at times is quite intrusive. CD brought silence to it’s background which help to allow access to the more subtle areas of it’s score.
So , go out and look for an early UK copy of this album (or maybe the original mix on CD ) and sit and enjoy its raw and expressive nature.......enjoy listening also to the remix and indulge in the game of compare the two mixes!

( For the audiophile who wants a special treat..... The Japanese release uses the SHM-CD (Super High Material CD) manufacturing process and I believe it contains the original mix too !

Songwriter.......Justin Hayward........Deram SDL 15.....English Copy

A solo album, from a member of The Moody Blues published 1977. Justin had worked on several projects outside the Moody’s notably with John Lodge. His song writing talents, were producing not only contributions to the Moody Blues themes but also, he had material that he wanted to develop more for himself. The style of the album defiantly reflects the Moody’s sound but he develops themes and idea that reflect his own thinking and personality .Some of these solo works, would not fit on a Moody’s album.
When I first owned this album, I found it a bit light weight and I didn’t really get into it. However my original copy is long gone but, in the last few days, I have acquired a second copy and began listening to it again and realised that I had misjudged it somewhat .The first thing I noticed, was the commonality between Justin’s sound and writing style to that of Clifford T Ward. In fact, they tackle common themes and go about it in a similar way. There is also a common aspect in the sounds of their voices. Further both artists have the ability to observe situations and report on them in song. Of course there are differences Justin appears to compose musically in a different way to Clifford who always favours piano based composition with his own self taught chord structures and with a view to orchestration.
So what is in the package “Songwriter”? Ten tracks (on the vinyl version) exploring themes from being a “Song writer” to Nostradamus. Most are vocals with Justin’s vocal being foremost and his guitar work too. It’s soft rock and easy on the ear. It takes a few plays before the music and lyrics come into focus but, when they do it is good listen and one that you would enjoy over again.
The pressing I have is a good clean and largely silent one, reflecting Decca’s high standards at the time.:)

This album is where jazz opera and fledgling pop music collided in the early 60s. Add to that Shakespeare and New York City and the recipe for a classic album was born. With Music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim the ability to capture the feel and emotions of one of the world’s classic stories was assured. The film score is as many were at the time , not a true reflection of the talents of the actors and actresses who stared in the film .Instead they were dubbed using the finest vocalists from the film studio’s roster. Sadly , they are not credited on the album sleeve and it is only in recent years that their true stories have been told. I am told that at the time, these great vocalists were only given session fees for their work, despite this album going on to sell over three million copies.
The film was ground breaking for it’s ability to create the atmospheric setting for the story and much of this transfers to the album. There are great audio pictures of the gangs involved in the play and the emotions of love a beautifully portrayed in “ Tonight” and “Somewhere”. There is social comment on the problems facing immigrants , youth and the everyday struggle to survive. Dreams and aspirations are debated in “America” and later we are tempted to see the vision of how divided communities might come together. It was relevant in 1961 and it still is today !
Vinylwise? I think I have a late 60s Dutch copy which was acquired for peanuts but, it is as quiet and flat as you could wish for. Sonically it is excellent and can challenge most cartridges as it is well cut.
To my mind this album was an excellent way to blow a Euro and will be enjoyed for many years to come!
