As the UK approaches 400 diagnosed Coronavirus cases, one wonders how many others are incubating the illness with no symptoms yet and how many are infected but not aware of any significant feeling of being unwell? Possibly thousands.

I expect we will see this snowball very quickly. Not good!

Being a certain age and with a raft of 'underlying problems' does focus your mind.

If you are young and fit, there is probably not much to worry about but if not, it could be a huge problem.

Plus, Scotland so far [touch wood] hasn't had many confirmed cases of the virus. If I were you mate, I'd go with home deliveries, for your shopping for the foreseeable future, and wash your hands thoroughly after touching anything that comes through your door.

But yes, I do hope that our older and more infirm members can come through this situation in full health. The next two weeks, when things peak, will be crucial.

Not downplaying this at all, but other flu kills 290,000-650,000 every year worldwide. Never see that in the news.

Ordinarily I would agree with that Ali, but as yet we don't have any natural immunity to Covid-19, or a vaccine and as pointed out that's a very low number of deaths on a global scale. This has the potential to be lethal and one of the worlds leading authorities Dr Richard Hatchett from CEPI said this about it;

"I have been working on epidemic preparedness for about 20 years and completely dispassionately, without elevating the temperature or speaking hyperbolically, this is the most frightening disease I've ever encountered in my career and that includes Ebola, it includes MERS, it includes SARS and it's frightening because of the combination of infectiousness and a lethality that appears to be many folds higher than flu"

The NHS and Government are now saying there is the potential for 80% of the UK to become infected, now with a flu fatality rate of 0.1 to 0.5% that maybe doesn't sound too scary, but do the maths on a fatality rate of 3%.

80% of 64 million = 51.2 million
3% of 51.2 million = 1.5 million

That would completely overwhelm pretty much every public service we have, let alone the financial cost and I dread to think what panic it might cause. So this is something everyone should be taking seriously. China took it deadly seriously, quarantined entire communities and built a huge hospital in Wuhan in 10 days! We don't have the ability to do anything like that. It's a legal requirement there now for all workers to have their temperature taken twice a day and record it, that's the entire country. So they have not messed about with it, but I guess they realise it's danger as they are at ground zero, but it's now gone global.

Those numbers are a worst case scenario and we are now forewarned by the huge crises in Italy, so hopefully we will take positive action if the numbers keep rising exponentially, but it's already at community infection level - as in being passed from people who have not been to a high risk area like Italy, or interacted with anyone from those areas. So complacency could have very serious consequences and way beyond no bog roll or pasta at Tesco.

If I was 25 I maybe wouldn't be too bothered, but I'm of an age where it could potentially kill me, so I am concerned.

1.5 million over what period of time though and how many of those people would die anyway over that period of time even without this virus? 56706 people died in the UK in January 2020, that's before CV got here. So approx 600,000 die annually anyway and that does not overwhelm anything. It's serious, yes, but no point in losing perspective.

It's serious, yes, but no point in losing perspective.

Yes Martin, which is why the word potential is there.

With what we now know about it's highly infectious nature and higher than flu fatality rate, I'd like to think we will respond accordingly and won't get numbers anything like that, as we haven't got the ability to respond like China. They are taking it very seriously, as WHO now is, whilst many of us seem to be questioning everything and playing it down as an over-reaction, which is what Brits do, we are naturally obstinate which has often served us well.

I think that's the wrong perspective, as I'd rather plan for the worst and be wrong, than be faced with a country in total lock down and an overwhelmed health service like Italy.

I don't know what the current population is Geoff, that was from memory and it's low, I just Googled it and it's likely now around 67 as the 2018 figure was 66?

I'll leave it there though as nothing I say will change peoples mind ;)

Marco

Nothing in north Wales yet (just south), but that'll no doubt change soon. Best plan, if you can, is to stay indoors and self-isolate regardless, even if you feel fine, and only go out when you *really* need to. That's what we're doing.

Marco.

death rate in Italy is around 7% at moment, although thats on reported cases, so may well be lower... There are quite possibly 2 strains now, 1 being more fatal than the other is the thought. Looks maybe better and safer than it probably is... it can take 4 to 10 days to appear so numbers can escalate rapidly

Marco
12-03-2020, 09:44
An important stat for Italy is that it has an older than average population, so that partly accounts for the higher mortality figures.

Yup and families are closer, and living often in closer proximity to us... although im guessing China was similar

Marco
12-03-2020, 10:20
Indeed... The way I see it, and this of course is no comfort to folks like Geoff or you, is that the virus is largely killing the elderly, and/or infirm (of any age) with existing health issues, and if you don't come into that category, although if you get the virus you may experience some adverse effects, you're very likely to be fine.

So although this is a serious situation, and the worst pandemic we've ever had, it's not likely to wipe out the world population anytime soon. Therefore, we just need to stay calm, follow the advice given, do what we need to do, and ride it out.

Marco.

Tim

If I was a 30 year old scrum-half in rude health I'd probably be wondering what all the fuss was about . . . hey ho, it is what it is. I can do my best to avoid it and will and just hope that others do the same, who are less likely to be effected.

Well if you look into the leaked China figures that were on the high tech giant Tencent high tech IT site. see https://www.express.co.uk/news/world/1238554/Coronavirus-news-deleted-figures-official-virus-tally-table-china-Wuhan-latest. There are also other reports that the COVID-19 virus may have originated from a laboratory that was experimenting on horsehoe bats and was also suspected of being responsible for the SARS outbreak. https://www.express.co.uk/news/weird/1251719/coronavirus-china-bioweapon-experiment-lab-leak-wuhan-seafood-market-spt

As can be seen from the leaked figures if these are real then they indicate and 8-10% death rate in those infected and it would explain why the death rate in Italy is so high. A very good friend on mine was skiing in Austria last week and met a southern Italian senior medical worker, this chap said they knew they had a problem with a virus in Northern Italy mid December onwards but had no idea what it was or the seriousness, obviously it has since been identified as COVID-19. This implies the Pandora box had already been opened before China let everyone know in January.

Another friend who saw a senior Cardiac surgeon last week advised her to Socially Isolate herself from everyone, including friends and family, and he feared he would loose 15-20% of his heart and lung patients due to Coronavirus. So personally I am taking this matter quite seriously and we are both minimising seeing anyone unless absolutely necessary.

Another friend from Hampshire told us that someone at a pub quiz he attended last week on Thursday has been tested positive with COVID-19, the people sat immediately next to him have been told to 14 day self isolate and if one sat next to my friend develops it then my friend will need to isolate, he sadly has serious cardiac issues and is obviously concerned. Also a secondary school nearby has been closed due to 11 confirmed cases in the last few days.

So it is on the march, be careful everyone.

Thing is though the Govt are more than happy to lose a few 1,000 people off the NHS/Welfare bill, so they're not bothered in the slightest.

I drive/handyman for a council care home with a day care centre and I'm still bringing elderly people in every day and absolutely NO advice from the council yet as to what we need to be doing or need to prepare.

It was only last week that one of my supervisors arrived to check out my stores that I have for the domestics and carers stocked with cleaning materials, cloths, the usual thing as well as anti bacterial kit etc and because some of it was supplied by a company we don't use any more they binned loads of it, I couldn't believe it, I thought we are about to have problems with Covid-19 and will no doubt have supply issues ( happening already ) and they just binned it!

As of yesterday no official policy [emoji848]

The bottom line is though, there's no point in worrying about something you can't stop. I've never been someone who panics easily, or prone to irrational bouts of hysteria, and don't intend on starting now. What will be, will be.

*But* that doesn't mean that reasonable and logical precautions/steps, where possible, shouldn't be taken to minimise the spread of the virus, and in the process possibly save some lives. And in that respect, the government should've been much more proactive.

I'm not young or fit, or smug about it. But I'd rather operate on the facts than what I would like to be true. I can't find any infectious disease specialist out there who says that there is a hope in hell of containment working. This is what the bloke from John Hopkins says:

Johns Hopkins senior scholar Dr. Amesh Adalja told CNBC on Tuesday that the new coronavirus will likely cause yearly outbreaks, with most of the cases being mild.
“It’s going to become a part of our seasonal respiratory virus family that causes disease,” Adalja said.

Also:

Michael Osterholm, an epidemiologist at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis. “Trying to stop influenza transmission is like trying to stop the wind,” he says. “Containment [of COVID-19] was never going to work.”
Osterholm says that, whether or not the WHO declares COVID-19 a pandemic in the coming days, we should all change our mind-set, to shift away from containment toward dealing with a virus that can’t be kept out by travel restrictions. While such measures may temporarily slow the spread of the virus, they’re ineffective in the long term, he says.

See if you can find a single one who says that it can still be contained.

Less than a month on from the outbreak peak, China have reported only eight new confirmed Coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, so it may be that the infection rate will continue to decline, assuming the published figures can be relied upon.

Hopefully, if the rest of affected countries including the UK follow this pattern we could be past the worst by mid April (fingers crossed).

I've been 'self isolating' as best I can for a couple of weeks now. Contact with others being minimal.

I totally agree, *but* that's presuming we can contain the virus as successfully as the Chinese have done. Fingers crossed, but I have my doubts, as we're nowhere near as well organised!

Exactly - TOTALLY different mentalities! I'm proudly Italian, but their disorganised, often lazy-minded mentality (and tendency to blindly panic during difficulties) was always going to be a recipe for disaster with this virus, and with America, in terms of mindless behaviour and selfishness, it's not much better.

This is a time for cool heads and [very focussed] rational behaviour; traits that the Chinese nations excel in. Therefore, here in the UK, we need to try and emulate that when dealing with this virus.

It is sickening, and very worrying indeed the way some folk behave in what isnt even a crisis, i have said for years that is serves no purpose in hoarding anything in the short term, if there were a real crisis, then the hungry and those without would just resort to desperate measures, and anyone known to have anything worth having, would get it taken from them by force, and posibly lose their lives in the process, the only way to deal with a crisis is for people to work as a comunity, and pool everything together, and ration everything out, just like they did after the war, that is the only plan that would work in the long term, but then again what would i know.:rolleyes:

I've always kept a decent 'buffer' stock of basic essentials. It's just seemed a sensible thing to do. Admittedly, last July I bought more in case there was a run on things for the October Brexit. Looks as though I did myself a favour, although I dare say shop stocks will soon recover from the panic buying. There's bound to be a point where buyers will realise they have enough. At least I didn't contribute to it all.

A school / nursery next to the Royal Free Hospital also closed for deep cleaning. Not good.

I've always wondered about that expression ever since I first heard it at a place I worked back in about 2003. There it meant that they were actually going to clean as opposed to doing absolutely nothing (the place was minging and people were getting rashes off the dust. It was here in the UK too not France in case you were justifiably wondering.)

I mean somewhere or something is either clean or it isn't. What is the alternative to a 'deep clean', a lick and a promise? Someone spits on a handkerchief and then just rubs really hard at the worst bits?

Shouldn't somewhere like a hospital be 'deep cleaned' every day just as a matter of course?

I think it is the giving a shit that Gaz is talking about.

Time is the thing though, I'm out 11 hours a day and I like to get 8 hours kip, that only leaves 5 hours for me which is either music or telly time. Back when I was on the rock and roll the place was immaculate. Old houses harder to keep clean too.

Wot - it's only women who give a shit how clean the house is? That's not true either. I'm more fastidious about that than Del is - always have been. Ditto my dad, compared with my mum (and he was the one out working all the time), although neither my mum or Del were/are mucky pups:)

That's the healthier reality. TIME is defo a precious commodity though, regardless, and for me *MUCH* more important than money, for all sorts of reasons, most of all considering the effects of the current pandemic...

Not much point having worked like a dog for years, amassed pots of cash in the bank, and having sacrificed your personal relationships accordingly, once you're dead!! That's why you also have to live for the moment, not just plan for the future, as the future you've planned might never happen.

Cup cupboard door left open, spoon draw left open, lid of tea bag canister left off, tea bag and spoon left on the counter, milk left out of the fridge, wet “ring” from the cup not wiped up. Sometimes the fridge door left open. Apparently I’m “anal” for having a problem with any of this...

I had a mate who was looking for a house to rent and another who had a spare house to rent so I put them together and this bloke's been living there ten years now. But he's getting married in the autumn so he's moving in with the bird. I swear to god he has not cleaned that place once in all that time.

But now he has to leave it looking at least half decent when he leaves. I mean, Marco, if you think my place is a bit messy you have got no idea. This is unbelievable. It is going to take him a week full time to scratch the surface of it. And he isn't the worst I know by a long shot.

Lol - so why live like that (in such a pigsty)? For me, there are only two possible reasons:

1) Mental health issues (generally depression).
2) Sheer laziness.
3) A combination of the above.

And I'm not referring here to your gaff (which is not like that), but those you've just described of your mates. I don't buy the 'It's just a single bloke's thing', as I can *ASSURE* you, if I lived on my own, the place would be tidy, although not to OCD levels. However, I'd likely lean towards Timbo's standards of "Captain Tidy":D

For me, unless you suffer from mental health issues, liable to influence matters accordingly, there's NO acceptable excuse for living in a midden!:nono:

One of the reasons i have a sparce modern pristine home, People think your at it all the time keeping up the show room appearance but believe me you are not.

Yes, that’s true, when I was on my own the place was pristine, but didn’t take much effort to keep it that way. Before kids it wasn’t too bad, but once we got a bigger place and nippers it’s not so much dirty as just a bloody mess!

I just made 3 trips to de shops, spent 150 notes, not one toilet roll did I see, tins of tomatoes gone too, just as well I got a few left over from the 2010 banking crisis, I lie, I replenished them in 2016, then again in 2018, so all good for another few weeks, cos things are happening quickly now ain;t they! I got 2 bottles of wine amongst my groceries, got one left. Sheeeet, at this rate, with unemployment and recession looming, gonna have to start buying crate loads of the stuff to keep me sane.

What I find very disconcerting is the new message to sled isolate for 7 days if you have possible symptoms and don’t call anyone or go to medical centre or hospital. If you look at the government site it says nothing about what to do if you become more ill or are having difficulty, and nothing for those with serious underlying health problems.

Seems to me they just don’t want to know and would rather you just died at home. Also seems to be a good way of not telling everyone what is actually going on, what the public don’t know won’t harm them.

Personally I think it is appalling, a complete lack of information and clear guidance.

I expect a good few vulnerable individuals 'self isolating' on their own will be found dead in their homes as time passes. The government won't give a toss.

Same applies and probably even more so in America, where anybody or anything that costs money is swept aside.

Never let it be said that benevolence got in the way of the bottom line!

seems a bit judgemental. People are concerned that if supply chains break down, which is unlikely but not impossible, they will starve to death. Especially If you have children you are going to put that as a priority, I know I would.

Marco
14-03-2020, 10:30
Yes, but their selfish actions will impact on others in the very same situation, who equally want the best for their kids and loved ones, and so on and so forth... No-one's going to starve to death. We need to pull together as a community, not behave like rabid dogs. So panic buying and selfishly looking after No1 is not the answer, quite the opposite, as it simply exacerbates the problem.

Proper (supervised) rationing of essentials now in supermarkets, with allowances per person outlined when entering stores, and enforced at checkouts, in order to allow stocks to be replenished, is the only answer if things continue as they are.

I agree but we don't have that yet so what are people supposed to do? Just take a chance? I don't know anyone with children who would not trample over every other human being on the planet to get to the last tin of food if they think the alternative is going to be watching their child starve to death, It's basic human biology. It's hard-wired in. You can't blame people for it. You'd do the same and so would I.

Marco
14-03-2020, 10:47
No I wouldn't - not unless there was *NO* other option, and their very survival (and mine) was dependent on it. We're nowhere near at that stage yet, nor are we likely to be, so there's simply no excuse for panic buying!!

And I'd prevent such selfish behaviour by enforcing rationing in stores, as outlined, and people will simply have to do what they're told and like it.

As long as there's drinking water available, we'll be fine. If necessary, we can survive on minimal amounts of food - and plenty of folks these days are walking around with belly-fulls of 'reserves', probably many of whom are guilty of panic buying...!!;)

Hoarding or stock piling can be a problem, but sometimes it makes sense. Depends on who's doing it, what the stuff is, and why.

Up here in the frozen north it's not too uncommon to see an offer in Lidl, say starting on Friday, so go down to the store to stock up, and by 9am one sees someone taking all the stock of whatever out in a trolley. One could argue it's selfish, though they could be buying whatever for their local community. More likely though they are people running B&Bs who have spotted an opportunity to cut their own costs. If the "whatever" is very critical, and other people need it, then this is indeed very selfish. However, in the current climate it might also be that small communities delegate one person to stock up, so as to minimise outside contact.

Some form of sensible rationing for critical items is needed, but the emphasis should be on sensible and critical.

I'm not thinking so much about us but other people. We live in the sticks, with no neighbours, so we can go out and not see anybody to catch anything from. We have good stocks of everything (inc loo rolls), three freezers and lots of cans of all sorts. Our grown up kids are all an hour away but could get us shopping if needs be.

Trouble is, the talk is of 3 months isolation for it to die down. That will be a nightmare for many older folk but could be doable, I suppose, if the food delivery companies keep going.

Apparently, some GP surgeries are closed now, so what are the ill to do ?

It may be best to get infected now.

Hospitals are short of space and respirators with current level of infections. If you are over 60/have underlying medical problems, and are infected in May/June, when the expectation is that the infection rate will be at a peak, then it will become a lottery on whether or not you get a respirator in hospital.

The virus is one thing but the damage it will be doing to the World is significant. In a few weeks, there will be millions of unemployed and numerous small businesses gone. Without some sort of legislation, how are we going to survive 4 months of isolation without going to the shops and what about essential GP and hospital visits ? Will our medication still be available ?

for healthy under 60's its not going to be a serious illness for 99% as i understand it. most will find it similar to a cold. alas they will be highly contagious for a week or so. Almost all deaths have been from the over 60 and unwell groups. if you are both over 60 and unwell, especially lung, heart issues then it will be very dangerous.
Most younger healthy folk will probably be better catching it according to our esteemed pm:rolleyes:

I have to go out to work 5 days a week, what am I and the tens of millions of others who also have to work supposed to do?

Wear a mask and gloves.

If you need space, just cough.

Just been the supermarket, no panic buying, no shortage of anything, just utter bollocks as usual.

ofc it is. Told the other half yesterday they will all be stocked back up tomorrow. It a matter of just getting the stock from a central Warehouse to the shop.

Now the big topic is people cannot afford to be off work, The Gov idea of paying you is cobblers, too much messing about & waiting for money. People will go to work ill or not, They have to & will do.

Personally I don't think that is a very valid measurement at all.

My understanding is that it is generally accepted that eventually most of the world population will get COVID-19, based on currently know statistics of those that have had it, about 80% will get it mildly and recover easily and quickly, around 15% will be badly affected and will require medical treatment with most making a full recovery and the remaining 5% will unfortunately be very ill will require critical life support, of this 5% about 20% will not survive. This is based on current WHO figures.

I think if you do the maths then even if only about 80% of the population actually get it then the death rate is likely to be substantially higher than your % figure. By the way as pointed out earlier if the leaked figures from China are actually true then it may be even worse.

Couldn't your employers use available cloud technology and let you work from home? It's office-based work you do, isn't it? Do you have a decent phone line and computer at home, mate? Surely, if that's the case, there's nothing you could do at work that you couldn't effectively also do at home?

I don't know... Educate me - in terms of tasks, what does your typical day involve?:)

Plus, if things keep going the way they are, all large businesses/factories, etc, may be closed, so you could end up at home anyway.

All speculative and predictive at the moment. No individual, government, or population modelling software can predict the true outcome. It's more to do with the virulence of COVID 19.

Yes, I could work from home, not likely to happen though. You can't use your own computer due to the danger of it infecting the network so they'd have to issue us all computers...can't see that. What I do isn't short-term 'business-critical' as they call it, so if it comes to it I'd just get to stay home unpaid for a couple of weeks.

I see, no worries. I thought it would be possible, one way or the other!:)

You never know, with things going the way they are, it might become a reality. I was also under the impression that the government were funding (or contributing to) any loss of earnings folks will have from being made to work from home, or requiring sick leave, as a result of the Coronavirus?

Guess I am more at risk than most, having to work on site. Currently working in London, travelling weekly and staying in hotels. Ironically, the project consists of replacing a 132/33kV transformer, built and supplied by an Italian firm. For the last few weeks they have been flying an engineer in to oversee the installation...

Yeah, I get that mentality. If you do get it, you'll almost likely only experience mild symptoms, and then become immune, so it's no biggie:)
