I am trying to watch Van Dee Walk and suffer the shit ads, what really really pisses me of is the banks, insurance companies, media cosmosnied and anyone else you can think of trying to put a spin on their ad that they are their for us.

Absolutely disgusting, and extremely poor taste

Don't forget all the bloodsucking 'funeral plan' companies touting for business left right and centre. I'll bet they're rubbing their hands with glee at the moment and will no doubt have massively boosted their premiums and added suitable loadings and clauses to ensure they come out well ahead!

Gaz, I appreciate your intentions are good mate, but you're beginning to sound like a broken record...

No offence, but it's coming across more like you want everyone to do what YOU think is right (based on your level of risk assessment), rather than folks using their own judgement. Anyway, let's leave it there now, please.

The psychologists say the government must do more to explain the reasons for ongoing physical distancing to help young people understand lockdown rules.

And while the government is explaining that to them maybe it could wipe their arses for them too?

on yesterday's coronavirus 'Briefing', a young journalist asked why, since the 100,000 tests target was achieved a week ago, they have failed to reach that target every single day, and also asked why some people have had to wait as much as ten days for test results to come back. Through extensive use of flannel neither question was answered.

I've watched a few of these "briefings" now, and the novelty has well and truly worn off. So this afternoon I'll flick over to the Sci-fi channel for something more believable.

There's not one of them or their advisors really has a clue.

Now they're saying new arrivals in the UK should be quarantined. If they'd done that at the end of January when they could see what was coming, there would have been no infections here!

Sorry wrong, it escaped China in November and was in north Italy in December and people were dying but they did not know what it was, they thought a new flu. Lots went skiing including Brits and it was here in January and spreading. Same through rest of EU. But I agree shutting the border would have helped.

I've been giving something a lot of thought recently, as I'm naturally a considerate chap... Aside from our faces, and given the extreme toxicity of our botty emissions, do you think you and I should be tying a 'mask' to our arses, kind of like a mini-tarpaulin (which when 'filled' inflates like a parachute), thus transporting us upwards and away from endangering the public?

It's something that's been troubling me greatly (no doubt also you) since the outbreak of this pandemic, as I'm mindful of the potentially fatal effects of infecting folks with a 'double whammy'.

It is a concern, particularly as your coughs and sneezes are usually accompanied by a corresponding rearward chuff. I think you'll be ok, your adult nappy should catch them. But it'll only work as long as you wear it - leaving it at home just because your mankini can't adequately conceal it puts everyone in danger.

We will obviously continue to take funds from central government, a new parliament called the Round Table will be set up in Tintagel. Anyone breaking strict Covid distancing laws I force at any time will be deported to the rest of the UK and will be refused entry back.

I predict tough times ahead for some employees and employers. There will be some bosses, desperate to resume trading in order to save their business, and who despite doing all the right things safety wise, cannot get their workers to come in due to travel and childcare issues.

And I don't know how they will go on regarding the furlough scheme. Perhaps it will be made clear in the govt's newly-published 50 page "Did you seriously think we'd keep paying you?" booklet, though I doubt it

50 pages? Maybe back in the 1970s. Here are the official guidelines for the modern government pamphlet:

1) no more then 8 pages long
2) use a large, well spaced, easily read font
3) have lots of pictures in the 'cartoon' idiom
4) tell you absolutely nothing that you did not know already or which was not intuitively obvious
5) Be available in 50 different languages (and brail)

So you can only meet friends and family one at a time in the park BUT you can visit a complete strangers house if they're selling it?

Top tip - If you want to visit family or friends get them to put their house up for sale and you're allowed to pop round for a 'viewing'.

And we are now allowed to meet a friend if we are 2 metres apart. Only one friend mind you; anymore and you (which one?) will be fined.

So there we are talking to a friend out in a public space, keeping 2 metres apart, when two other people you know come by, and keeping two metres apart from one another stop to talk. Now there is four of you - which one of the foursome will be fined?

In this area, I haven't seen a Policeman or even a Police car going by, for months, so it doesn't worry me. What does worry me is that when crime is committed, the nearest Police are over an hour away in Braintree.

Problem is that Southall commonly known as “little Punjab” has an ethnic population which I believe is susceptible to Covid19 so may explain why so many deaths. Plus there is a tendency to live in large family groups which will spread it quicker.

As you say, it's not a new thing. It's everywhere. Immigrants would tend to stick together when arriving in a foreign country as they would be simple folk, and rather fearful in their new unfamiliar home, facing hostility. Happens in large towns and cities across the world. I know I too would have chosen to settle close to people who understood my language and customs.

I was told by my daughter's fiancé's parents that there is a connection between Italy (well Barga anyway) and Paisley, including Paulo Nutini, and I guess your parents too. Only a "problem" when the numbers become so great that our own cultures are threatened (thinking about sex education in Birmingham).

Yup (and I'll get to the Italian thing in a mo), but you're missing the point, and the key words "take over", see below:

No ONE race of people should ever be allowed to take over large areas of any city...

INTEGRATE harmoniously with the existing population, yes, but TAKE OVER it, no. What if Geoff and the other existing British inhabitants of Southall don't want to live in a "little Punjab"? It wasn't like that once. When they moved there, I'm sure that wasn't what they 'signed up' for!

Quite simply, it should *never* get to the stage where immigrants create huge 'ghettos' in cities, and yes, TAKE OVER them, to the *detriment* of the lives of the existing inhabitants/natives of the country in question, often making them too scared to walk their own streets! But unfortunately that's what has happened, and continues to happen in our towns and cities - and it's fundamentally wrong.

I'd welcome any immigrant to the UK who a) is hardworking and able to be an ASSET to the country, b) is willing to learn English, and c) is willing to RESPECT OUR customs and way of life, and INTEGRATE harmoniously with the existing community that they're going to become a part of [as I said, at one time Southall *wasn't* a "mini Punjab"; it's simply been allowed to become such by successive governments too afraid to stop it], rather than running roughshod all over it, simply to turn the area they've chosen to live in into a 'mini' version of the country they've just left...

Sorry, BULLSHIT to that. It isn't right and needs stopped. And since you mention Scotland, parts of Glasgow are exactly the same as Southall - towns have been turned into ghettos by the Asian (mainly Pakistani) community, where British residents (what's left of them) are treated as outcasts, and too afraid to go out at night or actually LIVE in the area where they were born and bred, and other natives of Scotland, who dare to venture into these towns, now 'ghettos', are treated with similar disdain (or often worse) by the immigrants who've now overrun them!!

At least Italians (and most other immigrants to the UK) have sought to INTEGRATE harmoniously with the existing population, and respected the prevailing customs and way of life, and didn't attempt to turn large parts of UK cities into a 'mini Italy'. The only way you'd know that you were in part of a town or city with a large Italian population, would be the presence of the cafes, chip shops, delicatessens and restaurants owned and run by them, and where by and large they were loved and considered as invaluable by the existing local community.

I can say the very same, in that respect about the thousands of Polish immigrants who've been coming to Wrexham for decades, and who without doubt are an ASSET to the town and have made it a BETTER place to live - and *that* is how it should always be with an influx of immigrants from ANY country: THEY need to LEARN how to fit in with *US*, so we can all live in harmony together, while respecting each other's customs, not the opposite!

Anyway, yes, there is a BIG connection with Paisley, in Scotland, and Barga (in Tuscany), not only Paisley, but huge chunks of Glasgow, as many of the Italian restaurants there are owned by people who were either born in Barga, or whose families came from Barga - count me in!:) Paulo Nutini is another, and also a distant cousin of mine. His grandparents used to live in the same street in Paisley as Del and I did (when we bought my granddad's old house), and when I was a kid I remember visiting them with my dad, which of course was long before Paulo was born.

However, when Paulo first considered becoming a singer, his granddad was most disappointed that he didn't want to be the next Dean Martin!!:D

Marco
14-05-2020, 09:59
Indeed - Dino Crocetti:)

Paulo's granddad (Giacomo, known as 'Jackie' Nutini) so wanted him to be a crooner!:eyebrows:

As some might say "it's not black & white". Many in the region are westernised, but others, who tend to congregate in more densely populated parts, just seem to ignore the fact that they are in a foreign country and carry on as they would have done back where they came from and refuse to concede to any kind of integration. To the extent of refusing to learn English or wearing anything resembling european attire.

Marco
14-05-2020, 10:49
And *that* last bit is what should never have been allowed to happen... The question you have to ask yourself is, if you decided to move to Pakistan (or wherever), and refused to observe and respect their culture and customs, moreover ran roughshod over them, and attempted to turn the area you lived in into a 'mini England', what do you think would happen...??

Hang on a minute... Isn't that what we call 'Benidorm'?:D

More seriously though, so why do we allow it to occur here in the UK, the other way round? Because we're too bloody soft - that's why!

There's an old saying that goes: 'Do as the locals do' - and that applies as much to the behaviour of immigrants to ANY country, as much as it does to tourists!!

Re. your earlier comments: No, I didn't miss the point, rather you missed my point in paragraph two, pretty much what you was saying, but in a much much more concise way! Apart from that you may be surprised to know that I agree with everything you're saying there. Just enough words left to say this:

Over the years I've done work for people of all nationalities, and it would be fair to say that all have their own characteristics, some good, some less so. However I will go out on a limb and say that imv the Hindu and Sikh communities are almost always peaceful and law abiding, same with other nationalities, certainly more so than white British. But I feel that much of the problems come from Pakistani Muslims, and their refusal to integrate, but especially the young males who have a real attitude on them. This just comes from my observations, others may have a different view.

Fair enough, I simply wanted to differentiate between this (what you wrote earlier, and is perfectly fine):

Happens in large towns and cities across the world. I know I too would have chosen to settle close to people who understood my language and customs.

...and TAKING OVER towns and large areas of our cities, forcing their culture and way of life upon non-desiring native residents of those areas, and which *isn't* right - and indeed very wrong!

Just enough words left to say this:

Nope, you were quite right to say what you think. I agree, as it happens to be true, and it certainly represents the results of my own experience. Unfortunately too many people in this country, including successive governments, are (or have been) too scared to tackle the problem, for fear of being deemed as 'racist', when in reality it is nothing of the sort!

Quite simply, all non-compliant immigrants, Pakistani Muslims or otherwise, when entering this country, should be FORCED to integrate. And if they refuse to comply, then they should be immediately sent back to their own country - and a hard line needs to be taken on this. If that had happened way back in the first place, instead of the politically correct 'liberal do-gooders', too scared of offending anyone, getting their way and allowing such behaviour, then we wouldn't be in the position we're in now.

Marco.

My hometown suffers from young muslim/pakiastanis causing havoc. The police are not interested as they just claim they dont speak english so the police have to get translators in at huge cost. So the young thugs can do as they please, involved with one in a traffic collision the whole family is immediately there intimidating witnesses. Hiring and racing their nice cars for a blast through middle of town. And folk wonder why us normal folk who see what they upto constantly without repercussions hate them.

But you can't send anyone "back to their own country" when that country is Britain, and most will now be 2nd or 3rd generation British, making them as British as you and me! (on paper at least). But policy-makers and police need to be able to take a more even handed and considered approach, without fear of being branded racist by those who simply use the term to slap down anyone who dares to put their head above the parapet and say "Hey this isn't right".

Pete, we have much the same problem in Preston, with young lads tearing around in cars of the sort I could never afford, driving like they're not afraid of losing their licence.

Marco
15-05-2020, 09:35
Yeah of course, what I meant was in reference to new immigrants coming into the UK for the first time, from *wherever*. There should be a clear message put to them of 'Fit in or Fuck Off'... Well, perhaps I'd put it a little more diplomatically...;)

Seriously though, it's whoever allowed the type of behaviour we're seeing now to exist in the first place, way back when, who's to blame. instead of punitive action being administered by the authorities for non-compliance. And if that precedent had been set THEN, and a strict monitoring of behaviour and enforcing of the rules [essentially learn English, be an asset to the country, fit in with society] had been the case from the off, since day one of the first immigrants refusing to integrate, then we wouldn't be in this situation NOW - simples!

Unfortunately however, the bed has long since been made, and now there is little real option but to lie in it... As I said, in the UK we're too bloody soft/easy-osy, and we certainly wouldn't get away with doing similar in their country. TBH, we should take a leaf out of New Zealand's book, when it comes to immigration. Those dudes have got it pretty much right.

Me? I'm all for living together, peacefully with people from all different nations. I love mingling in diverse multicultural communities and learning about the lifestyles and customs, different foods, etc, of people from other countries, but it has to exist within a framework of mutual respect and tolerance, and crucially that anyone coming into our country fundamentally understands that it is THEY who are the strangers entering a new land, and so it's incumbent on THEM to respect and comply with OUR culture and customs, and FIT IN (and us to welcome them when they do) - not the other way round!

Unfortunately I don't know what can be done to stop whole areas of our towns and cities becoming ghettos. A friend's parents, who are both in their eighties, live in a large semi walking distance from Preston North End's football ground (my mate and his dad go to all the home games). But he frequently gets people knocking on his door and offering to buy his house. He has no intention of selling, but they won't take no for an answer. Several neighbours have already sold to up and moved away, so bit by bit it will become a new 'ghetto' :(

in 2010 Election " Too many Easter Europeans over here " lol. It was said Blair/ Mandy open the floodgates to rub the rights nose in it. Rightly or wrongly ?, but its backfired big style.

Agree 100% As I've said before, my work has me dealing with all nationalities, and always get on with them. Even get free lunches of whatever they're cooking, which while often unfamiliar to me is always very nice. Thing is to take people as you find them.

Nice one. I've had the same with some of mine. One of my best customers up in Glasgow, who was Indian, used to make me some amazing Pakora! We used to swap recipes, as she loved Italian food, and I loved (proper authentic) curries!!:eyebrows:

That's what it's all about: living in harmony and helping each other, no matter race, creed, colour or whatever else...

Not sure I follow your logic... Why would some folk offering to buy a house end up turning an area into a ghetto?

Unless everyone knocking on the door was a scumbag....

Fulwood is one of the better areas of Preston, but one part of it (about half a square mile) has attracted ever more Muslim families, who seem intent on making that area their own. I would have no problem with having Asian neighbours - as you say, diversity is a good thing, but I don't want to be the only white family in the whole street either, this is how our national identity gets lost. Are we even allowed to say national identity without being branded 'racist'?

Badgering long-term residents, many of whom have lived there most of their lives, until they give up and move out, is the exact opposite of integration imo. Perhaps 'ghetto' is the wrong word, I'm meaning an area that is exclusively one particular race.

Fair enough, I simply wanted to differentiate between this (what you wrote earlier, and is perfectly fine):

...and TAKING OVER towns and large areas of our cities, forcing their culture and way of life upon non-desiring native residents of those areas, and which *isn't* right - and indeed very wrong!

Marco.

I'm just going on what my friend's dad told me. He said some of the other residents have had similar offers, and I have no reason to disbelieve him. We're talking about couples around retirement age, in large 3/4/5 bedroom family homes, who may at some point think about 'downsizing'. So it's a case of get in there with an offer before anyone else does. My point isn't about the harassment, but about the 'colonisation' of parts of our towns and cities.

Yes, there are many good, dedicated members of our police force, keen to make a difference in the RIGHT way, for the greater good of society, but there are also a number of only-too-willing-to-become 'mini-Hitlers', who thrive on abusing their authority, and indeed take great delight in imposing their control upon people, and thus are using the opportunity that this pandemic has created to demonstrate their dictator-like tendencies!

This is where it's important that we, the people of the UK, don't allow this virus to become the very excuse that the authorities need to impose restrictions upon our longterm freedom, and which impinge on our basic HUMAN RIGHTS. Therefore, whilst I fully appreciate the need for monitoring and minimising the effect of this virus on our population, it MUST NOT be at the expense of *longterm* huge cost to our freedom!!

I, for one, will not allow myself to effectively be under house arrest forever, or live in a heavily-surveilled police state, controlled by the establishment, and would fight against that and protect my freedom and basic human rights, to the death!!:trust::trust:

But yes, whatever anyone may have thought of Corbyn, he was clearly at heart a humanitarian and pacifist, important traits for any decent/well-adjusted human being to have, and which are clearly shared by his brother, who was part of the protest I linked to earlier.

Therefore, one wonders if Labour had won the election, and Corbyn had been PM, instead of dithering Boris, if he'd have allowed so many of our people to die unnecessarily from this virus, simply as a result of outrageous ineptitude and incompetence.

The UK's response to Covid is directly at the feet of the conservative party both in the response and the preconditions due to austerity. absolutely criminal and even now it's so obvious how "scientific" advice is being presented to cover up party dogma and failings to the electorate at large.

Yeah I agree with all of the above, particularly the highlighted bits. I have no strong allegiances towards any political party (save the SNP, and if I lived in Scotland that's who I'd vote for), as the 'party line'/agenda is almost always entirely self-serving, but I can recognise what I consider are good politicians from any party, and Mr Starmer is one of them:)

Well, I,d say censorship is the tool of anyone from social democratic nanny state s to totalitarian states, be they fascist or communist. I say we're adults, treat us as thus.

They don't want adults though. Ideologies of any type appeal only to the weak minded, the naïve, and those who are ruled by their 'emotions'. That is why they are always accompanied by plenty of hatred. It is a badge of honour amongst them as to who can hate the most. Ironically it is the continual expression of hatred that turns normal people away from the ideology and those espousing it. This is why ideologies rarely, if ever, gain enough traction to take control. Much to the upset and confusion of their adherents.

Well, I,d say censorship is the tool of anyone from social democratic nanny state s to totalitarian states, be they fascist or communist. I say we're adults, treat us as thus.A big problem is that getting good high quality information is very difficult. In the USA we hear that some doctors are being abused because they're involved with Covid-19, and some crazy people are denying that the disease exists at all, or in some areas disputing the evidence that it exists within their areas. As for the attacks on phone masts - obviously the little green men are coming ..... and should perhaps be followed by the men in white coats.

Even if we do get very good data and information, many people don't understand, or misinterpret what they hear or read.

People don't always understand obvious things, and Covid-19 presents many aspects which are not at all obvious. Only yesterday I heard someone on the radio saying that the incidence of CV-19 as very low (I think it was mentioned as 0.28%) so we could/should all go out and play and disregard it. The incidence of CV-19 in some areas is low, but let's not forget that initially it was presumably zero, so just one person (or possibly several coming in to the UK at the same time) would have initiated a big problem. The virus has not, as far as I know, changed much in its nature - it can still be deadly for some people.

We are always receiving "information" which has been heavily filtered, and in some cases massaged to present a particular point of view.

hifi_dave
17-05-2020, 09:12
It might well be 0.28% but if you or a loved one is in that 0.28% it ain't funny.

Meantime, I read in the paper yesterday, that an average of 170 planes arrive at heathrow every day and not one of those people are tested or even questioned. That's just Heathrow, so I suppose that other airports are also allowing flights. Even if we had no cases at all in the UK, surely this is a good way of getting the Pandemic going again ?

Are you afraid of showing yours?

I'm not necessarily disagreeing with your statement, but why put the word "emotions" inside inverted commas, as if to indicate in some way that they're false, or a sign of weakness? After all, it's what defines us from robots...

Emotions/gut instincts are fundamental to human beings functioning in line with how they were created. Therefore, to shun or dismiss them, is to fail to be human. Of course, one shouldn't be 'ruled' by one's emotions, but then neither should one be 'ruled' by logic, as often our emotional/gut instinct reactions to something/certain situations are more accurate than those governed solely by logic.

Gove's statement clearly hasn't been thought through properly and should have been proof-read, but we do get what he's saying. Relaxing of restrictions will put more people in contact with each other, and even with precautions will still put us at increased risk. Just how much so we'll have to wait and see.

Everything we do is based on risk/reward, whether we are aware of it or not - for example going out for a nice meal involves the risk of death/injury on the roads, foreign holidays may come with the risk of an air crash. At some point we have to decide whether the risk of infection justifies putting our normal lives on hold. And at the moment that risk is too great imo.

Post of the year!

Precisely... We should all read and digest the above, but with some caveats... "Putting our normal lives on hold" could be interpreted instead as: 'allowing the authorities to continually keep us under house arrest'. We need to ensure that WE get a say in the matter!

As I said earlier, *we need to keep the authorities in check* by not allowing ourselves to be unjustly ruled or bullied into submission, in terms of eventually how lockdown will be ended [that's ENDED not eased], and we get to live within the boundaries of the proposed 'new normal' [and btw, watch very carefully the future role in that of potentially mandatory vaccines, which haven't been properly tested as safe, and the penalties for non-complliance], and which would unquestionably result in the erosion of our civil liberties.

Would that really be a price worth paying, simply for being a 'sheep'??

Virus risk assessment will largely be based upon age and levels of health. Personally, I'm at the point now where, whilst still being sensible and aware of the risks, I can't wait to get back to some form of *genuine* normality!

However, this is the crucial bit, and so I'd ask everyone here to LISTEN UP, and to LISTEN very, VERY carefully........

When this pandemic is 'over', or as 'over' as it will ever be, do we want to retain the same levels of freedom that we enjoyed pre-Covid-19, or will we allow ourselves to be continually surveilled and our lives unjustly and immorally controlled by the authorities, subsequently with our liberties curtailed to the extent that the UK becomes more like a police state than we have ever known it, simply to be able to 'track and trace' this virus - or make some futile attempt at creating a 'cure'...?

That, my friends, is the decision that WE, the people of the UK, must make; DO NOT let it simply be FORCED upon us......!!

I'm not saying that we're about to enter the creation of a totalitarian state , but we have to fight together for our FREEDOM, march, protest, ensure than dissenting voices are heard in Westminster, challenging this 'new normal', and that have the necessary impact on keeping in check the controlling agendas of the establishment - do WHATEVER is necessary - to PROTECT the freedom and HUMAN RIGHTS we once enjoyed, indeed took for granted, as proud citizens of a FREE COUNTRY, and which was once 'our normal': a 'normal' that our great grandparents and ancestors fought so hard for us to have during two world wars!

Do we want to effectively end up living in a world that resembles what would've very likely become reality under rule by Hitler??

So..... I'd ask you all to watch very carefully what happens in the coming weeks, and in particular what we will be 'asked' to do by the government [read as 'asked' only in the sense that it won't become mandatory, as long as enough people do what they're told, sorry 'asked'], in terms of alleviating the lockdown - and here I'm referring to the government's Coronavirus 'traffic-light system', and what will be required for us to reach 'Level 1'.

And in that respect, *think very carefully*, perhaps more than about anything you've ever done in your life so far [yes this will be *THAT* important] about what you 'volunteer' to do, under the premise of being a 'responsible citizen' - as trust me, there will be NO going back!!

Well I tend to agree that we need to be very careful what we sign up to in terms of monitoring, in the first instance the reasons will very likely be with good intentions to establish what is happening with Covid infection and re-infection, but once established it can be corrupted and used for other purposes, I will leave others to summise what they may be.

With respect to “volunteering” this is very abject, IMO there is usually some form of coercion, guilt trip, no brainier argument or peer pressure involved. And worst of all is when opposition is ridiculed, singled out or demonised as not belonging or believing in doing something for the good of all. Unfortunately I suspect it will go this way over the coming months.

Mrs. P has concerns, but more to do with cyber security than the possibility that the state may be monitoring us. I certainly won't just accept that it's safe just because the government says it is.

You should be fine with your Nokia 3210 though :)

I just had my first trip out in car since this kicked off.. went to tesco but didnt get out... was a small queue, but drizzly too. courage failed me, and i will do without. was a brave new world; main rd was pretty deserted; town was a little busier but no much. all shops in centre look closed etc.. depressing is the word for it

I think I'll download the app, then Sellotape the sim card to the cat's collar before she goes out. I've no idea where she gets to, but if I get a knock on the door from Mr Plod, acting on reports that I've been a "Peeping Tom", or that I've been burgling houses via the cat flap, I'll know the app is being abused.

Exactly!

I completely agree; indeed we're already seeing it, with people being arrested for protesting against the lockdown [and as you say being demonised for it by the sheep/uninitiated who fail to see the bigger picture] - and trust me that will get worse in the weeks and months ahead, as folks become gradually more frustrated and fearful, not necessarily of the virus, but of the effects of the lockdown to both their mental health and financial security!

The FACT is, people will only put up for so long with having their freedom and civil liberties curtailed, and crucially their ability to look after themselves and support their families, by earning a living - and of course the government KNOW that. However, what remains to be seen is what they intend on doing about it....

Maybe they'll bring a halt to untraceable 'top up' facilities, citing their use by criminal gangs as their justification, so folk will have to buy traceable sim contracts. And of course the modern sims won't be compatible with your 3210. So you'll have to buy a smartphone or (more likely) do without altogether and go off the grid.

Here's a thought... If what you're suggesting becomes reality, I wonder how many smartphone owners would give up using them altogether, and go off-grid, if they knew that their data was going to be misused, and that what they were carrying around with them [and effectively controlling their lives] was essentially a tool for 'Big Brother' to spy on them?

My post was addressing you personally, which is why I inserted (more likely) there :) As to your question, I have no idea how many would give up their smartphones. people will individually decide whether the convenience is worth it. I imagine your average fat bint on Facebook wouldn't care.

I have a smartphone, but I wouldn't say my life revolves round a virtual world. I use the BBC Weather app (real weather, not virtual), sat nav (takes me to real, not virtual places), and Shazam identifies certain songs for me (real songs), and if that leads to me being targeted by those who might sell me related records/downloads/whatever, I can live with that. Other than that I use it for calls and texts (to real people) :)

Anyone that tries to monitor or exploit me via my smartphone will become very bored very quickly.

Sorry but there is an important point I think I need to make, mobile devices and their operating systems, and other computer systems are incredibly sophisticated, to the extent that it is possible to install an app and if with the correct authority override aspects of protection and enable auto update etc, this would not necessarily be visible or know to the end user.

This is one of the reasons all apps on the Apple platform have to go through a testing and acceptance process before being made available on the Apple download platform. My understanding is the proposed government one will not meet certain criteria.

No worries, the question was rhetorical, in that it would be interesting to see how many people would choose to continue using their smartphones if they suspected, beyond reasonable doubt, that they were being used by the government to spy on them. Of course, before now the very same was happening, but conducted rather more covertly. So would knowing the truth in that respect be the difference between them keeping hold of their devices or not?

Essentially, choosing between convenience/habit or freedom/privacy... Oh, and I wasn't saying that you live in a virtual world, but rather the majority of diehard smartphone users [people for whom their phones have effectively become their right arms], and who have inadvertently allowed them to control their lives.

Here's the test, in terms of the latter, and how addicted or not you are to your smartphone:

What's the first thing you do when waking up in the morning? If it's to check your phone for new messages (or for any other reason), then you have a problem with addiction. Unless of course there's some ongoing genuine emergency..... Or, would you be able go through a whole day [full 24 hours] without switching on your smartphone? What about 2 days, a week, or a month??

Again, if the answer is no, and there's no *genuinely unavoidable* reason for needing to use it [note that yacking on social media doesn't qualify as such], then the unfortunate reality is that your life revolves around your smartphone. I'm afraid that's the simple truth!

Yup, like you, if I had a smartphone, and was being monitored by the 'powers that be', they'd get very bored, VERY quickly indeed (or most likely permanently traumatised, if they caught me performing my 'stool-disposing regime'), but as Grant says, it's the *principal*...

I agree with the first bit, but how do you reconcile the latter with the armies of 'iZombies' roaming our streets, and visible on public transport (more so of course before this pandemic), who quite clearly are GLUED to their smart devices, to the extent that they're completely oblivious to their surroundings, with the worst examples of such bumping into things because they're too busy gawping at their screens??

It would be laughable if it weren't so sad, and given what we're currently discussing, also very dangerous, as clearly they've already been brainwashed, and so are prime fodder for further controlling!

What about all the kids/teens now who would rather use their phones to send texts to members of their own family, LIVING UNDER THE SAME ROOF, when communicating with them, instead of actually *speaking* to them in person? And trust me, these days that's a common occurrence.

And I'm not just talking about kids (or the young) either. What about all the middle-aged people, and older, who when out for a meal or a drink with their partners or friends, would rather sit using their phones, than indulge in conversation? Bars and restaurants are [or rather were] full of them! I could go on....

So if those aren't valid examples of smartphones CONTROLLING people's lives, and also making them very lazy and susceptible to being further controlled by technology, I don't know what is!

Marco
17-05-2020, 17:51
Ok, but that's only because she's well-adjusted/educated, no doubt due to how you've brought her up. Many others won't have been as lucky. The point is, the behaviour of you or I, or our offspring, or most likely the majority of members of AoS, isn't necessarily representative of the behaviour of the masses - and ultimately it's the behaviour of the masses that counts!

Unfortunately, I believe "folk like that" now represent the overwhelming majority of the general public.

And there is plenty of observational evidence that supports my theory, based on the daily habits and behavioural traits of the general public, showing that they are *dangerously addicted* to their smartphones, not to mention evidence in schools of it becoming increasingly apparent in children and teens, that they simply *cannot function* without their smartphone - and remember that they represent our future generation!

As I said, take the test I outlined earlier, for assessing how addicted you are to your phone, and how much you've become reliant on it, in order to function [earn a living], and therefore survive, and see how you'd get on...

Marco.

Unfortunately it is in our current situation, where technology is being used to brainwash people into behaving in a manner that serves to further the establishment agenda, surreptitiously via government instruction, and potentially with a view to removing (or severely restricting) their civil liberties.

And the sheep, unless they wake up soon and smell the coffee, will simply fall into the trap and end up paying the ultimate price!

Hi Macca,

When you get the chance, I'd appreciate your thoughts on the post below [#1927], which I directed at you earlier, particularly on the bit in bold, and why you used inverted commas:

A big problem is that getting good high quality information is very difficult.

Well, if the president of the US tells people to inject bleach into themselves and a only a handful of people do, then I'd say have more faith in the general public.

These sources suggest otherwise:

https://commonslibrary.parliament.uk/research-briefings/sn04033/

"In 2018/19, public spending per person in the UK as a whole was £9,584. In England, it was £9,296 (3% below the UK average). This compares with:

Scotland: £11,247 (17% above the UK average)
Wales: £10,656 (11% above the UK average)
Northern Ireland £11,590 (21% above the UK average).

Among the English regions, public spending per person was lowest in the South East and East Midlands at £8,601 (10% below the UK average) and highest in London at £10,425 (9% higher than the UK average)."

https://www.carehomeprofessional.com/england-lagging-behind-scotland-and-wales-in-social-care-spending-per-person/

New analysis by The Health Foundation has revealed that spending on social care per person in Scotland and Wales is significantly above that in England.

The report shows that England is spending £310 per person on social care, 43% less than Scotland (£445) and 33% below Wales (£414).

The Health Foundation reveals that England has fallen further behind Scotland and Wales since 2010/11 when it spent £345 per person compared with £457 in Scotland (32% more) and £445 in Wales (29% more)."

I suppose it all comes down to who you believe.

Marco

It's not remotely indisputable regardless of political leanings or lack of them in my case. The gov had one priority in this crisis and that was to prevent the health service being overwhelmed and that has been achieved. The handling of the crisis has not been perfect but then it is impossible to handle a new and unexpected crisis perfectly. Way too many poorly-informed 'Captain Hindsight' comments on this thread.

Governments in general do not handle things well at the best of times, achieving sub-optimal outcomes and poor value for money. Those who would like the government to run everything would do well to bear that in mind. Taking that into account it has not done too badly at all. As for the actual politicians it seems it needs to be pointed out again that they actually 'handle' very little themselves. That's what the Civil Service is for.

In theory the politicians decide policy and the Civil Service carry out those policies but that's only in theory.

In reality the politicians do what is best for the politicians and the Civil Service does what is best for the Civil Service. Very occasionally that pans out well for the rest of us too but that's purely by chance.

All of course, in your humble opinion!;)

I completely disagree, and think the way that the Tories have handled this crisis has largely been a grossly mismanaged incompetent shambles, full of massaged figures and blatant lies, in contrast to the very clear, concise and efficient way that Nicola Sturgeon has dealt with the *exact same* crisis [born from the same cause] in Scotland.

But the weather is way too nice to be stuck inside arguing the toss with you on this, so I'll let you have the last word, while I return to my crystal flute of chilled Prosecco!:D

Probably LESS funding for testing, too... And the poorer areas are PROPER poor, unlike in England, where they're just playing at it;)

Undoubtedly though, to anyone with half a brain and the ability to examine things rationally, 'The Strurge' has handled the lockdown in Scotland, and this pandemic in general, far better than Boris the Blundering Buffoon has done in England!

Marco.

Not if she has allowed Scotland's testing to go underfunded without commenting though. So which is it - Scotland going underfunded and Nic not bothering to kick off, or are they doing as well as the rest of us, ie not so well?

I'm not saying this to defend Boris Blank-head, but if I may use a building trade metaphor, it's much easier for me to criticise the standard of a plasterer's work than to do the plastering myself. Just sayin' :)

As Guy said earlier, it depends on who's figures you want to believe! I mainly go by how people conduct themselves in public, what they say, and how much of it becomes reality. And for me, Nicola has a better record of that during this pandemic than hapless, dim-witted BJ-boy, and his bumbling backroom staff.

I'm not saying this to defend Boris Blank-head, but if I may use a building trade metaphor, it's much easier for me to criticise the standard of a plasterer's work than to do the plastering myself. Just sayin' :)

That's absolutely fine, but in agreeing with Martin you're in effect saying that, in terms of the government's handling of this crisis, it's simply "not been perfect". I'm afraid for myself and many others it's been a damn sight worse than that, which is why I wrote what I did!!

IMO, they've been a bloody disgrace - and worse, guilty of crimes against humanity, which one day they'll pay for.

Well I have never been accused of being a Tory, and indeed I have NEVER voted Tory in my life, so this must be aimed at others :)

As a 'free thinker' I don't readily latch onto whatever 'truth' fits with my beliefs. Rather I'm inclined to believe that the truth is somewhere between what the govt is telling us, and what The Guardian has to say about it. Neither do my blue-tinted specs (don't wear specs) cloud me from reality, which is that EVERYBODY LIES. Maybe one day the liars will be called to account, but I doubt it.

Time for me to get out in the sun now, it's currently 34C here, and the pool beckons :) It has a swim-up bar

As I have intimated before and given examples, there are quite a few untruths being bandied around by those in power. Also certain facts about the coronavirus and it’s origin, and stability appear and then suddenly disappear, I wonder why that might be. I have even noted that the “free” press have on occasions got close to what I suspect is the truth and then suddenly do not follow it up?

Lol - what made you think that the "blue-tinted specs" comments were aimed at you? Not at all, as I know you're not a Tory. Those who are, however, or have leanings in that direction (i.e. voted for them at the last general election), are making little attempt at hiding the fact - or their deeply-ingrained bias;)

Yes, everyone lies, to protect their own ass, but some more so than others!

Having the highest death rate in Europe is “Not done too badly”. Seriously??

Where do you get your figures?

I don't look on this pandemic as a league table opportunity, to each individual/family affected by a Covid death, that would be insensitive, but your assertive post caused me to look up the current figures:

https://www.statista.com/statistics/1111779/coronavirus-death-rate-europe-by-country/

Far too dangerous to look at statistics as a simple tally - as I have posted previously there are far too many factors to consider to make assumptions on efficiency of any government or to make petty party political points (and no, I do not consider myself a "Tory" or for that matter a Scottish nationalist ).
However the current figures do not show that we have the highest death rate in Europe.

On a different tack, the figures show that Slovakia has the lowest death rate, would I want to live there  after all in some measures it is considered one of the poorer countries in Europe.

Seems pretty clear here (WORLDWIDE, only the US has had more deaths): https://gisanddata.maps.arcgis.com/apps/opsdashboard/index.html#/bda7594740fd40299423467b48e9ecf6

Oh, and I'm a "Scottish Nationalist" only in so far as I'd do anything to end the unjust English/Westminster rule in the UK, which Scotland, Wales and the Republic of Ireland has had to endure and suffer from [be treated as second-class citizens) for centuries!

Anyway, this isn't the time or place for that particular discussion:)

Cheers Marco, but that link took me to "confirmed cases" worldwide - not death rate (number of people who die/total population x 100).

The claim that I was querying was

If we were to use confirmed cases as a means of comparison, then Monaco or similarly low population countries would look very good (even if they all died - God forbid).

Having the highest death rate in Europe is “Not done too badly”. Seriously??

It's not a cup competition to find out who's the best. There are various factors involved here, the idea that it can all be blamed on 'the government' is facile and simply represents a poorly-informed and somewhat distasteful attempt to make party political capital out of a tragedy that, if it was anyone's fault, it wasn't anyone in this country.

You could take into account that we have the highest population density in Europe, and that our lockdown was not as severe as some of the other countries, notably Italy. Added to which you have a different social culture that includes a different attitude to obeying the rules. If you look at world press you will also see people in other European countries blaming their governments and the EU, with similar, ideologically-inspired motivations. But some people just cannot help themselves I suppose.

I am not suggesting that the handling has been perfect and mistakes have been made. But then anyone with any real-world experience knows that mistakes get made all the time, in any field of operations. The fact is the primary objective was achieved, which was no mean feat. I cannot see any aspect of this crisis that would have been handled any differently had a different political party been in power. It's completely irrelevant to the situation.
