IMO instead of spending $5 M on sending out a self advertising junk mail they could have told the NHS to send out free presciptions of it for the few that do not get free prescription any way
I blipping pay for it (over £400 on National insurance contribution this month on top the 25% tax)

Did you have a cancer scare a few years ago, or am I misremembering?

Not cancer (as thankfully the tumour was non-malignant), but I had a large tumour intermingled with my spine, growing by the day, and which had it not been removed, would've killed me, by eventually shutting down all of my vital organs.

I was also told by my consultant that there was more than an 80% chance that after it had been removed, I'd be paralysed from the waist down, as the tumour was next to delicate nerves in my spinal column, some of which would've been in danger of being severed, when the tumour was cut out...

In that respect, I can't begin to describe the relief I felt when waking up from the op and being able to wiggle my toes!!

I think the joy of a massive win on the Lottery would've paled into insignificance in comparison... Going through something like that certainly refocusses your priorities in life, that's for sure, which is one of the reasons why I now live much more 'for the moment'!:)

That was in 2007, and I haven't been near a doctor's surgery or hospital since (nor needed to)!

Lol - I can laugh now, but you don't know how right you are, although not in the sense you mean! By that stage, I'd lost almost all control of my bladder, which was one of the things that the tumour had been starting to shut down... Not nice.

Joke aside, good it went one way - the right way and not the other

Fair enough, Gaz... You make your own choices.

TBH, it's bollox anyway, in the real world, as if you've been near a supermarket recently, you'll have seen that apart from at the entry and exit points, where 2m distance markings have been put, no bugger pays any attention to social distancing!

Apart from in small shops (the ones suffering most from the 2m rule), it's completely impossible to enforce.

What does that even mean? Are we talking 'right wing' as in more authoritarian and less democratic? Or 'right wing' as in 'More freedom for the individual and diminished powers for the State?'

Or are you using 'right wing' in the Newspeak variant where it is completely interchangeable with 'evil'? To the extent that I don't know why they just don't just say 'evil' instead. A tribalistic thing I suppose. You've always got to be at war with Oceania even if you're not really sure what Oceania is. Or even if it exists in the first place.

You stick with your 5m Grant.

I have been trying to avoid this thread for a while as I was becoming frustrated with it, however I think some would do well to consider certain aspects of a this disease.

1 it is highly infectious, as is basically like a cold.

2. it has been pretty well established it is very likely to be unnatural, in other words engineered, various eminent scientists/virologists around the world have stated this publicly, and it is considered to be very dangerous.

3. several scientists/virologists consider an effective vaccine due to the above to very unlikely.

4. If you have a weakened immune system through illness, age or possibly genetics the the risk of death is much higher.

5. Long term immunity from it has not been established, and there are known cases of re-infection with deaths.

6. Increased exposure to it has been shown to increase the likelihood of the person exposed becoming more ill.

I could go on but won’t.

So if you think your safe and happy to roll the COVID-19 dice go ahead. We will all probably be forced to anyway as it will be too damaging to not get the world back to work. So we will probably end up living with it and those that die from it will, with greater risk as you get older or ill.

Nobody feels safe or happy 'rolling the dice' but there isn't any other option. The world can't stand still forever as the consequences of that would be catastrophic and we'd still have the virus to worry about in any case.

sure.. its a case of managing both in interaction.. im inclined to say ypounger healthy individuals go back to work.. try to keep a metre for short term closeness, and 2 for longer.. older and more infirm just need to stay out of circulation for a good while.. maybe all year if needs be.

No I did not say safety at all costs, please do not put words into my mouth!

I am just stating what is going on with respect to what is known about COVID-19, you can choose to ignore it if you wish, but may find out it will be short lived, or it may even catch up with you, that’s your choice.

As for my health condition I actually have not shut myself at home, and discussed the risks with my GP, and I took a decision to go out and exercise as much as possible for my physical and mental well being. I and Sue have also had to take higher risks than most to ensure her 83 year old mum with early dementia is safe and has supplies, this was impossible to do in isolation from her.

The sad fact is that it is likely to be with us for some time and each of us better hope we get it later on than sooner.

Wishing you all the best, and good health.

I'm not ignoring anything, simply making decisions/expressing views based on my own circumstances and judgement criteria.

Yup, and same to you. I'm pretty sure that both Del and I have had it, as we experienced most of the common symptoms [none of which were serious] and made a full recovery, hence why we're not scared of it.

Let's hope that none of us here (or those we know) get the virus, but if not, then that we recover from it fully and (for a while at least) become less susceptible to catching it again:cool:

Sue is doing very well and went back to work last week on reduced hours, considering how serious her condition was I am very surprised and pleases. Going into the hospital several times in the midst of the lockdown was quite daunting to say the least, but we decided that we just had to get on with it and accept the risk, which we were told was quite high, all you saw was PPE and people in the grounds with face masks. I do wonder if I have had it as I lost all taste and smell for about 3 weeks in Feb/march and had a persistent cough/chest infection prior that put me in an ambulance just before CV19 broke across the country.

Sue took her Mum out this afternoon, first time for her Mum in 4 months, she needed some shoes so went to the local large nursery which also has a large clothes shop.

Let's hope that none of us here (or those we know) get the virus, but if not, then that we recover from it fully and (for a while at least) be less susceptible to catching it again:cool:

Well I hope I am not right but I think this crap is just going to go around and around, so it I suspect it will be a bit of a lottery, I hope I am wrong but remember the government figures of +500k deaths with no intervention.

Look after yourself, and all be sensible.

Certainly with you on the visiting pubs and restaurants. We are very thankful for the opportunity to exercise in a local nature reserve within walking distance but feel very limited by the lockdown of not being able to stay overnight anywhere in the motorhome.

I feel sure the risk is reducing from the reducing numbers of new infections, but stay safe everyone.

It's a sad indictment of 21st century society, and aside from anything else, how folk don't have time to carry out the most important things in life. Or if they have, they choose to waste it instead queuing outside of junk food chains:rolleyes:

I had to laugh at the thick bint interviewed saying that once you're in the queue you can't get out... Well the answer of course is not to join it in the first place!!

It's hard to imagine why anyone would do so, as soon as they approached the queue and saw how long it was... In that respect, anyone normal would've done an about turn and gone elsewhere!

The reality is, her time would've been more constructively spent digesting the contents of a cook book, or taking valuable lessons on time management.

Having worked in one I can tell you that there is no 'marinade'. There's the 'secret blend of 11 herbs and spices' thing that comes in bags mixed with the flour and breadcrumbs. You take the chicken parts (which are fresh), break them and then roll them in the flour, then they go into the deep fat fryer. No marinade involved.

So there's some salt, and oil from the frying but it's not the worst thing in the world you can eat by a long shot.

I worked there for 10 weeks and you could eat for free on your breaks and lunchtime so I ate it twice every day, 5 days a week. No health issues at all and 30 years on I'm still here.

I wouldn't recommend it from a health point of view but shows you much of this stuff is exaggerated. Like that idiotic documentary where he eats McDonalds every day and he's pretending he's being sick. And his doctor tells him after two weeks that if he carries on he's going to die. What a load of bollocks. Same bloke who did that doc about fracking that was also full of lies.

Anyway - You could have it, say, once a week with no problems at all.

You're joking, surely?? You mean compared with the homemade one Del did, and you were raving about the look of on the food thread? Trust me, you'd have loved the taste, too!;)

Different animal... I though you were a connoisseur, going on about the texture of the patty, etc? That's totally absent in McDonald's thin, tasteless cack. And that PLASTIC CHEESE (never seen any dairy) you get on a McD's cheeseburger... YUK - come on!!

Marco.I said for the money it tastes good. It does.
I would rather make my own and often did. But out in car 8 into a 12hr shift and 60miles from home it's a great bly filler for little money or time.

Sorry then, we'll have to seriously disagree on that one. Aside from anything else, the flavour of that plastic cheese ruins anything else, and the tasteless and doughy cheap roll it's put in. The burger itself is just about edible, but not exactly substantial, for the money.

Fair enough, but IMO any decent quality burger from a supermarket, in a proper roll, with a nice salad and some sauce, cooked properly, is far superior - and cheaper! Never mind homemade... And when I was out on the road (for years as a salesman), Del made up a nice packed lunch for me, so I rarely felt the need to seek out a McDonalds, or any other junk food:)

Sorry, that's what I was referring to. Marinade, 'rub' or whatever... And it contains a TON of salt! I forget exactly how much the survey I read said, but trust me it was LOTS, and so not remotely healthy! When you make southern-fried chicken yourself, there's no need for all that salt, and it's just as tasty - more so if you use the right herbs and spices!:)

Sure (although I never seen the programme concerned), but it's definitely not something you should be eating often, if you've got any notions of having a healthy diet. Don't get me wrong, eat what you like, when you like, but just be 100% aware of *exactly* what it is you're filling your body with.

Anyway - You could have it, say, once a week with no problems at all.

That depends, as there are so many variables, not least of which is what constitutes as "problems", which of course will vary from person to person, and may only be revealed in the long term.

Also, it depends on what else you're eating in the course of that week, so if it's trips to the chippy, Chinese and/or curry house, combined with processed ready meals, salty snacks and cakes, and a virtual absence of fresh fruit and veg, then NO, it's not going to be good for you!;)

I make a point of not eating any kind of takeaway food (I enjoy fish & chips, curries and Chinese) more than once a month - everything else I eat is cooked fresh from scratch at home. Yes, of course I'm lucky to have a wife who makes it for me, but I can assure you that if I lived on my own I'd still care about having a healthy diet and wouldn't live off of junk food!!:nono:

A marinade is specifically a liquid, that's what I meant.

No of course it isn't good for you but something not good for you once or twice a week isn't going to do you any harm. Personally I couldn't stand living my life like that, worrying about what I ate being 'bad for me.' Might as well just become a Mormon and have done with it.

Too much food fascism around these days. People should be able to eat whatever they want without someone wagging a finger at them. It's nobody's business but their own. And before someone says 'It costs the Health Service money!' -- we are all going to get sick and die one day no matter how healthy we live and when that happens it's going to cost the health service money.

And if you are so healthy you live to be 95 or something and then have to be cared for round the clock you're going to cost it a bloody fortune.

Right. I pay a doctor to fix me if I'm sick, not to lecture about how not to get sick. That's a job they've taken upon themselves, I suppose because they think it will mean less work for them. I mean nothing wrong with giving people pointers on how to live healthy if they're so thick they can't figure it out for themselves - which is pretty much nobody.

Everyone knows they should eat healthy and exercise. The reason they don't is because they don't want to! Not because they don't understand FFS!

But it's become 'nanny knows best.' Treating grown adults like children, penalising people for making 'bad choices'. It's self-righteous, self-important bollocks. Anyone knows that if you're drinking less than your doctor then you're fine.

I fully agree, but do you honestly think I do that?:D Fuck no.... BUT I make sure what I eat is both healthy and tastes great! You know how I live. It's simply how I was brought up and what I'm used to. Worrying about anything doesn't come into the equation! The fact is, if you're able to eat well, and healthily, then you simply don't need to seek out junk food or live off of takeaways.

I completely agree, but I just have a bit of a 'thing' for people's obsession these days with 'fast food', filled with crap, as ably highlighted by the behaviour of those morons queuing up for KFC. Quite simply, that's not normal behaviour! The whole food culture in the UK (and elsewhere) is misguided and focussed on totally the wrong thing. BUT that's just my opinion - you don't have to agree with it.

And if you are so healthy you live to be 95 or something and then have to be cared for round the clock you're going to cost it a bloody fortune.

Not necessarily... Again it depends on how healthy you are!:ner: Look at my dad, at 87. He lives on his own, is totally self-sufficient, still fit [looks 20 years younger than he is] and does more now than you, lol!;)

Chances are, unless something drastic happens, he'll be the same for some time yet. So he's costing no-one a fortune.

My granddad was the same [who lived until he was 95], along with other elderly members of my family, alive or dead - and why? Because they ate well (or still do) and looked after themselves when they were young - simples. As they say: you ARE what you eat.... And what you do in your younger years often 'pays you back' in your older age, for the better or worse. I'm a firm believer in that:cool:

And I intend to emulate my dad and granddad, by living a LONG, HEALTHY and HAPPY life. So far I'm doing ok!:eyebrows:

I agree that queuing for an hour and half just to get Kentucky is not normal. But then we all do things that are 'not normal', we just don't do that thing.

As for the food culture I don't thing it is right or wrong it's just what it is. For every person living off of KFC and Maccie D there's someone who takes a lot of time and effort over cooking gourmet stuff for themselves. Lots of people are obsessed with cooking in this country, that's why there's so many pissing cookery shows on the telly.

I mean does it really matter? Why would we care? I mean I don't mind living in the future. I like the internet and the big tellies. But all the self-righteousness, that takes some getting used to.

The nineties were the best. The only people who felt they could pontificate then were the people not doing hard drugs at least once in a while and there was hardly any of them.

Yes it is what it is, but IMO it's wrong, as I can see the problems it causes, in many different ways.

Aside from anything else, one other such massive queue, at a Burger King, when it first opened after the lockdown, spilled out onto the main road and caused delays there. Now, if I were travelling along that road and was being held up by some dickheads going to Burger King, I wouldn't have been a happy bunny!!

Call me a considerate bastard, but I always try and ensure that my actions, whatever they are, and wherever possible, don't impact negatively on others. One thing that pisses me off even more than our 'junk food culture', are people who only care about themselves!

And do you think the folk who watch all those cookery shows, regularly put into practice what they're watching? I don't see much real evidence of that, based on the contents of most of the shopping trolleys I see at supermarkets, when they're emptied out onto conveyer belts at checkouts, or when I'm talking to others about food in a general conversation.

Sure some do, but most only watch those programmes for their entertainment value.

Jeez, it's patently obvious that many folks who dine out, even in expensive restaurants, don't really know about food [i.e. what things should actually look or taste like, based on their description on the menu], and wine comes under the same category. The reality is that they're not particularly knowledgeable or discerning; they just have the money to pay for whatever it is they're ordering!

I think that there is a big problem with "fast food"/"takeaway" culture (not sure if "culture" is quite the right word :)).
I am sure that we are going to have a section of society with massive health problems in the future. There are areas of Ipswich where the children seem to subsist on takeaways, by secondary school age (some before) many of the kids are obese and seem to have poor complexions and very little energy.

At one school where I worked, for a short time, they employed a new cook who made all of the dishes from scratch (some of the best school meals that I have ever had) - One of the pupils created a hell of a scene, demanding to see the head, because they had found a leaf in their casserole and the cook needed to be f...ing sacked

Well, Big Brother Watch seem sane compared to the Q-Anon loonies with their wacko theories about Donald Trump, saviour of the universe. But here in the UK at least any 'Big Brother' scheme will almost invariably be stymied by a) government incompetence, particularly in the IT field, and b) the sheer bloody-mindedness of the British populace.

It's slightly odd, given that you support civil liberties, that you back the supposed intention of Donald Trump to close down media outlets he doesn't approve of, and lock up various people. We now see that he's trying to block publication of two books that say nasty things about him. So much for freedom of speech! Fortunately, he's even more incompetent than a government IT department, and is seemingly in the early stages of dementia, so it's unlikely he'll be able to do any of what the Top Secret Plan involves. He's already failed to shut down Twitter, and the US Supeme Court is blocking almost everything he's asking for.

Generally speaking the 'best decade' is when you're in your teens/early 20s, because after that the music becomes shit, and you have to worry about mortgages, bills, and, worst of all, working for a living.

Once the 70s were out of the way, I spent the 80s getting married, buying a flat, then a house, having two children, and working. In the early 90s I moved to Bristol, and after that it's mostly a blur until I retired at the end of 2012 and went back to university. That was also when I paid off the mortgage.

That's what's good about having children. You're so busy working to keep them fed, clothed and schooled that you don't notice any of that 'decade' shite.

Liberalism is a complicated concept. You have the John Stuart Mill variety of liberalism, where the individual's wishes are paramount and no-one, least of all the government, should have the right to interfere, and the 'Big Government' variety, perhaps personified by Lloyd George, where the state meets everybody's needs from the cradle to the grave, and therefore has the right to tell us what to eat, what exercise to take, how much alcohol to drink, etc etc. What we currently have seems to be the worst of both worlds (though even so, it's not like we're living in Communist China or Soviet Russia).

indeed, especially if short of time and away from home etc... also kids need to keep up with their peers or they feel left out so should get to go occaionally if they want.

Not if you bring them up to be confident and have minds of their own!:ner:

When I was a kid, I honestly never felt that I had to do what everyone else did. I enjoyed being different, which of course I was, coming from an Italian family and a very different culture from the Scottish one that existed in the 70s!;)

Peer pressure, therefore, didn't really come into it. Back then, I was very strictly brought up to do what my parents wanted me to do (be what they wanted me to be), and I obeyed them mostly without question, because I loved and respected them, so naturally wanted to please them, and also because my dad was a strict disciplinarian, so what he said, quite simply, happened!!

If I'd bleated about wanting to go to a burger joint (even if McDonalds, or whatever, had existed back then), I'd have been told no, in no uncertain terms (as they both my parents were very anti-junk food and believed in only eating fresh, home-cooked meals, which was the Italian way), and if I'd persisted, I'd have been given a (well-deserved) slap!!

However, they wouldn't think twice about taking me with them to the nice restaurants and country pubs that they used to enjoy going to for lunch, and frequently did, which I suspect I'd have much preferred anyway to eating a mass-produced burger, especially with having been brought up on my mum's rather excellent cooking!

I guess that's what was partly responsible for turning me into a 'foodie'...

Parents these days though, tend to be too soft, and too easily give into the whims of their 'little darlings', mostly for a quiet life, and which is partly what breeds peer pressure. Quite simply, if there's no behavioural guidance from parents, kids will just end up doing what all their mates do - and so rather than growing up to be free-thinking individuals, with their own identity, simply become the same as everyone else...

That's certainly NOT how I'd choose to bring up my kids, if I'd been a parent. They'd have been brought up to respect MY values, and behave accordingly, not the values of popular society, simply in order to 'fit in'.

Ok, time for breakfast - I'll get to other recent posts here later!

Marco
19-06-2020, 09:55
Yes, but it's only different *if* you ALLOW it be different!

Don't get me wrong, I know what you mean and sympathise with the pressures parents have now, but babies aren't born into the world with a personality. That gets developed, through time, largely through observing the habits and behaviour of its parents - and which is why the early years are so important, in order to mould and shape them into the adults you would like them to become.

If you get that right, and successfully instil your values in them, from day one, simply by how you treat them and behave in front of them, then I believe that they'll grow to be more confident of themselves in later life [develop minds of their own], form their own identity, and thus be less prone to peer pressure.

That's one thing that asians get right, and which we often criticise them for (not fitting into our society), as they're brought up to have a very strict/rigid cultural identity, and behave accordingly, not pander to current popular culture, and whilst they often take that too far, British kids could do with growing up having a small taste of that discipline!

Well, the point is you can TRY (whilst simultaneously allowing them to express themselves in their own way when they're old enough), rather than simply allowing them to become 'A-N-Other' sheep, programmed to live according to the ways of popular culture.

And btw, I'm not talking about just creating a 'mini-me' [perish the thought], but instilling YOUR values in them from the earliest possible age, and not allowing their values simply to become whatever modern culture dictates. That's the difference! Try to breed a free-thinker, not a robot...

In what way?:)

So are you bringing Megan up with YOUR values, or simply allowing her values to be shaped by whatever popular culture dictates?

If it's the former, then you're bringing her up to be a free-thinker, i.e. someone who has the capacity to think differently from the norm/challenge orthodoxy, and create their own identity, rather than their identity being controlled by the values of modern society and culture.

Do you see what I mean? Essentially, do you want Megan to grow up to be more like you, or her pals, who've simply become 'slaves to the system'?

The conundrum is raising children who neither slavishly follow popular culture/their peers nor just become a 'mini-me' version of yourself and your partner. Most teenagers will go through a rebellious phase, when they are trying to establish their own identity, which may be entirely different from your own (eg they might reject your religious beliefs, or dress 'unsuitably'). They will push the boundaries as far as they can, and the trick is to allow them space to grow without letting them run wild. It's incredibly difficult to get the balance right, and, as some of the sad stories in a current pfm thread indicate, it often turns out badly for parents and/or children.

That's exactly it! And, as a responsible parent, you should try your utmost to achieve it, rather than simply selecting the easy option of allowing trends and society to take control. Unfortunately, there's too much evidence these days of not only kids slavishly following popular culture, but ADULTS, so what chance do the kids have?

We need to see more kids today being brought up unafraid of creating their OWN individual identity, and having the confidence to express it and be different from others. If not, we're heading for a future where the world will be populated by identically brainwashed robots.

In that respect, every time I see a 5-year old with a smartphone, my heart sinks......

You can do much more harm than good being obstinate about it tho. My grandkids get to go on occasion, usually a treat when they have been good or a birthday if thats what they want. Failure to take these desires of your kids into account can cause a serious issue with their adulthood as well as just giving in all the time or being lazy and bringing them up on fast food.

Its a delicate balance

Absolutely on all counts, and as you say obstinance is rarely a constructive solution to anything.

Plus, TREATS are a different kettle of fish. If your grandson wants to go to McDonalds as part of a birthday treat, then that's totally cool. What *isn't* cool, are those eating habits becoming the norm - and unfortunately too many parents today feed their kids on junk food/ready meals, simply because they're too lazy to cook.

Or... The common excuse: they don't have time. Well, MAKE time! They're your kids, FFS, and so it's YOUR responsibility to feed them properly/healthily. This lack of time thing though, is an ever-growing problem these days, due to parents having to work ridiculous hours to fund a lifestyle which they can ill afford - and so quite simply they no longer have TIME to do any proper parenting:doh:

Unlike when we grew up, and it was the norm for one parent (usually the mother) to be at home looking after the kids, and so they could devote the necessary attention to bringing their kids up properly, and unfortunately you now can see the results....

Especially when, for the sake of an easy life, and you're too tired/can't be bothered, you'd rather shove 'Junior' in front of a smartphone or an X-Box, to 'keep them quiet' - than interact with them properly as a parent and human being. How can kids develop essential people skills, to facilitate their successful development into adults, when they spend more time now in the company of computers than people?

And we wonder why kids these days are more introverted than ever, and would rather send texts than TALK....

I fully agree (although disagree on some aspects of the Trump thing), but the latter in particular is certainly true. The point is though, you need people in Westminster, who are very firmly focussed on protecting our civil liberties, to keep on 'poking' the authorities (as seen on the video contained on the Twitter feed I posted earlier), and in keeping the government's desire to control us in check!

I won't be fucking 'controlled' by anyone, period. I'd die fighting for my freedom first! Of course, I'll always behave reasonably and responsibly, and lawfully within certain boundaries, but that's it.

It's slightly odd, given that you support civil liberties, that you back the supposed intention of Donald Trump to close down media outlets he doesn't approve of, and lock up various people. We now see that he's trying to block publication of two books that say nasty things about him. So much for freedom of speech!

Erm no... It isn't as black and white as that. Right now, I'm backing him to do *whatever is necessary* to dismantle and bring down the global elite, and anyone who knowingly represents them or furthers their agenda, as I believe that currently, that takes precedence over all else.

Once, or if he succeeds, partially or otherwise, then I'll look into what else he represents in more detail and judge him on that accordingly.

As I've already said, before the end of his time in The White House, I fully expect him to have succeeded in putting behind bars more scum, such as Epstein, for crimes they've committed against humanity, and in exposing high-level corruption and paedophile rings, sex trafficking and slavery, which is rotting the foundations of our society.

So come back to me, once we've seen what's happened, and we'll assess things then. Btw, you do realise that if I'm proved right about ANY of this, I'll be demanding a full and sincere public apology from you, for the ribbing I've been taking?;)

Oh, sure. But if I had to put money on it, my bet would be that Trump continues to flounder around, pissing off just about everyone, and achieving fuck-all. He keeps picking fights he doesn't need (eg over curtailing the employment rights of LGBTQ workers) and losing. If he's got some master-plan in his back pocket, why is he farting around?

Trump continually does dumb things on social media, most recently by posting a 'doctored' video on Twitter, making himself look like an incompetent loser:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-53106029

'Twitter has labelled a video tweeted by US President Donald Trump as having "manipulated media" for the first time.

The video shows a black child running away from a white child while playing, with a fake CNN caption.

The caption reads: "Terrified toddler runs from racist baby", before the video accuses CNN of "fake news"

CNN's communications department also tweeted back at the president with a terse response.

"CNN did cover this story - exactly as it happened. Just as we reported your positions on race (and poll numbers)," it wrote.

"We'll continue working with facts rather than tweeting fake videos that exploit innocent children. We invite you to do the same. Be better.".'

As I said upthread, the Supreme Court, even though it has a majority of politically conservative judges, seems to be in the mood to reject everything Trump is asking for, so they'll probably tell him where to shove his 'sealed indictments'.

He's already asked (according to John Bolton):

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-53089609

'In the book, Mr Bolton describes a meeting between President Trump and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping at a G20 meeting in Japan last year.

The US president "stunningly, turned the conversation to the coming US presidential election [in 2020], alluding to China's economic capability and pleading with Xi to ensure he'd win," Mr Bolton writes.

"He stressed the importance of farmers and increased Chinese purchases of soybeans and wheat in the electoral outcome."

Agriculture is one of the major industries in the Midwest American states that helped propel Mr Trump to victory in the 2016 election.'

Marco.

It's from the Q-Anon lot, who got all excited about a large number of 'sealed indictments', which I took to refer to the targets of Trump's anti-EVIL crusade. See this link for more details and de-bunking (the article's from 2018, but the Q-Anon claims still seem to be doing the rounds):

https://www.dailydot.com/debug/sealed-indictments-qanon-conspiracy/

'The central claim of the #QAnon conspiracy theory is that President Donald Trump’s Justice Department has filed thousands of sealed indictments against Democratic leaders, Hollywood celebrities, and wealthy elites.

All are guilty of a variety of misdeeds, horrific sex crimes, affiliation with the “deep state,” and/or intent to harm the president and his administration.

And when the time is right, Trump will order the indictments unsealed, prompting a massive wave of arrests, with the accused tried in the field and sent to Guantanamo Bay for indefinite detention.

For months, the theory has lurked in the shadows of the internet, but this week it exploded when Q followers made their presence known at a Trump rally in July, prompting an outpouring of media coverage.

[...]

An indictment is simply a formal accusation of serious wrongdoing, sought by a federal prosecutor, voted on by a grand jury, which usually leads to an arrest.

The Fifth Amendment requires the federal government to obtain an indictment from a grand jury in order to prosecute someone for a felony, and it’s important to remember that only grand juries hand down indictments. Judges can’t do it, nor can federal agencies. Or the president.

[...]

Sealing indictments is a routine legal procedure, done in most cases so that the subject of the indictment doesn’t know they’re about to be arrested. Some criminal cases are sealed due to the age or high-profile nature of the defendant, while some are sealed for dubious or unclear reasons.

[...]

Meanwhile, sealed indictment mania is a conspiracy theory that feeds itself, and will continue to, by adding more numbers to an essentially meaningless tally, and pretending it’s a portend of things to come.'

Q-Anon is also the bunch behind the false claims made about the Pirbright research institute:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/53061563

'Researching viruses in farm animals is essential rather than glamorous work, and The Pirbright Institute in Surrey excels at it. But recently they've been getting some very unwanted attention.

For months they've been unwittingly drawn into the orbit of conspiracy theorists, including those who accuse Bill Gates of planning the coronavirus pandemic. It's led to hate mail and threatening phone calls.

"We'd never experienced anything quite like that. Some of the commentary was quite vicious. Calling us murderers, that type of thing", says Teresa Maughan, head of communications.

Teresa remembers one particular phone call. The person had rung up before, leaving a colleague in tears after shouting down the phone accusing them of creating coronavirus and using it as a bioweapon.

"He then called me pretending to be Mrs Doubtfire, so it was pretty obvious it was somebody putting on a voice. He said something sexually abusive to me and I obviously put the phone down."

It all started in January with misleading social media posts about a patent.

Jordan Sather, a YouTuber who promotes the pro-Trump QAnon conspiracy in the United States, posted a series of tweets linking The Pirbright Institute to a patent "for the coronavirus" granted in 2018.

Coronaviruses are a large family of viruses known to cause a range of illnesses in both animals and humans. The novel coronavirus that causes Covid-19 only emerged at the end of 2019, so the suggestion being made was that the institute had identified this virus much earlier and lodged a "patent" for it.

The institute does hold a patent, but it's linked to research into a vaccine for a previously known coronavirus that affects chickens.

[...]

Online abuse was hurled at staff. An email to Dr Erica Bickerton, an expert in molecular virology, read:

"You know the composition of this Virus so you know how to destroy it...SO PLEASE I REQUEST YOU NOT LET MY FAMILY DIE AND TELL ME THE ANTIDOTE."

"Personally I found the misinformation spreading quite difficult", says Dr Bickerton,"because the work we're trying to do is to help livestock and other animals and understand this virus."

Someone even went to the trouble of setting up a fake "Pirbright" website offering to sell a coronavirus bioweapon.'

This is an interesting development:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-us-canada-53117951

'Geoffrey Berman is not going quietly.

Attorney-General Barr may have thought replacing a top US prosecutor would be a smooth process. But Mr Berman - by refusing to resign - has shown he has other ideas.

Mr Berman also may have the law on his side, as this particular US attorney was appointed to his position by a court, not the president, making it unclear whether President Trump has the legal authority to remove him. A court may have to sort this out, too, creating a procedural headache the White House surely hoped to avoid.

Looming over all of this is the question of why the president, and his attorney general, felt compelled to do this now, just five months before election day. The suddenness of the dismissal, coupled with the fact that Mr Berman is overseeing an investigation into the president's personal lawyer, Mr Giuliani, amid other corruption inquiries are already prompting accusations of impropriety.

In the months since being acquitted in his impeachment trial, Trump has removed a number of government officials for apparently insufficient loyalty. Mr Berman may be the latest target - albeit a stubborn one.'

(Berman is the bloke who has been trying to get Prince Andrew to provide evidence in the Jeffrey Epstein case).

Marco
20-06-2020, 11:34
Indeed, the key quote for me, given what I'm interested in, and which you've also highlighted is this:

The suddenness of the dismissal, coupled with the fact that Mr Berman is overseeing an investigation into the president's personal lawyer, Mr Giuliani, amid other corruption inquiries are already prompting accusations of impropriety.

In the months since being acquitted in his impeachment trial, Trump has removed a number of government officials for apparently insufficient loyalty.

"Amid other corruption inquiries" [which is probably where the sealed indictments come in], and which of course is what I've been saying all along,

This is now virtually proof positive that Trump is *actively in the process* of hunting down various corrupt (targeted) individuals, such as whom I've mentioned before, in an effort to dismantle the elite and remove their control and power, which is further confirmed by the statement contained in the last paragraph above.

"For apparently insufficient loyalty", I suggest could be read as not being sufficiently 'on message' in Trump's quest to overthrow the elite, in terms of securing him the arrests he needs, or in some other way has become a barrier towards him achieving such. Perhaps Berman got cold feet once he seen who was involved/who Trump was targeting?

As I've repeatedly said, and my gut feelings in that respect are rarely wrong, I'm utterly convinced that the heads of various corrupt high-level officials and businessmen will roll before Trump's stint as US president is over - and make no mistake - he's entirely focussed on achieving that goal. And all power to him!

For me, therefore, all that remains to be seen is whose heads they are!

What I’m scratching my head at is the idea that Trump is doing what he is doing out of some altruistic mission to “break up the elite” for the common good...

Well, not really. The author is very critical of, in reality, how dangerous this virus *actually* is to the overwhelmingly VAST majority of the population.

You might share some of the sentiments expressed, many even, but unless I was reading another language, others and you here were vehemently in support of the lockdown, in 'staying safe' via social distancing, wearing masks etc, all of us effectively being put under house arrest, and in general supporting the reported severity of the virus...

So how does that square with the contents and main thrust of the article? :hmm:

And btw, I totally agree with every word of it!!

The pertinent question that needs asking though, if you AGREE with what Shriver's saying, is...... WHY? And.... WHO or WHAT would benefit by the destruction of our economy and the creation of this 'new normal'...??

My views on that are very clear, but if you dismiss all the 'conspiracy theories', involving the global elite seeking to create a new World Order, and this 'new normal' is therefore simply a stepping stone towards them achieving that goal, then what else could logically be behind it?

I'd like to see some views on that.

You might share some of the sentiments expressed, many even, but unless I was reading another language, others and you here were vehemently in support of the lockdown, in 'staying safe' via social distancing, wearing masks etc, us effectively all being put under house arrest, and in general supporting the reported severity of the virus...

So how does that square with the contents and main thrust of that article? :hmm:

And btw, I totally agree with every word!!

The pertinent question that needs asking though, if you AGREE with what Shriver's saying, is...... WHY? WHO or WHAT would benefit by the destruction of our economy and the creation of this 'new normal'...??

My views on that are very clear, but if you dismiss all the 'conspiracy theories', involving the global elite seeking to create a new World Order, and this 'new normal' is simply a stepping stone towards that, then what else could be behind it?

Marco.

i wanted the lockdown as it became needed.. it probably wouldnt have been if they had protected all the main dangers. a much lighter touch would only have been needed then.
I wanted the old and at risk wrapped up... for the majority it would have been manageable

Marco

Fair enough, but that doesn't answer the questions I've asked or address the main [rather eruditely expressed] points of the article!

So I repeat: WHO or WHAT stands to gain most from the creation of this 'New Normal' - and WHY...??

Marco.

Marco.

A new, dangerous virus that seemed to be both highly infectious and with a high fatality rate. In the absence of a vaccine, the only things that 'work' are stopping movement of people and limiting social contact, especially for the old and those with pre-existing medical conditions. Keeping the economy going 'normally' in such conditions is almost impossible, but the alternative is to let hundreds of thousands of people die, often in their homes or in the streets because all the hospital beds are full, and doctors and nurses are also unwell or dying. That was essentially happened with the 'Spanish flu' just after WW1. Then, as now, countries which acted quickly fared better than those, like the US, UK and Brazil today, which 'hoped for the best' and downplayed the severity of the problem.

It's even worse now than with the Spanish flu because people are so much more mobile. Countries like New Zealand, which have no 'local' infections, are having to cope with imported cases. That's difficult, and expensive to police, but it's essential to avoid infections spreading across the country again.

Nobody wins. We (ie humanity) have to work out an exit strategy that balances lives lost against financial and other indirect losses arising from lockdown, and hope that a vaccine is found before too long, or that the virus mutates to something less deadly.

Marco
20-06-2020, 14:02
Yes, I get all that... BUT - look at what we've created now as a result? Would you like this "new Normal', as Striver has outlined, and which we're undoubtedly all now experiencing, to become permanent?

Aside from anything else, would you like to see kids educated that way in future, in such a soulless, inhuman way. and effectively grow up to be afraid of human contact? Because that's what WILL happen if we allow it!

Not only that, as Striver says, many other key aspectd of our lives and freedom as individuals will be severely compromised, as a result of a virus with a painfully low death rate? Ah yes, and of course that's where Gates gets to vaccinate and so 'cure' everyone!!

But the point is, for the overwhelmingly vast majority of people, it *isn't* deadly!!

40-odd thousand dead people in the UK, as a result of the virus, is 40-odd thousand too many, but still a teeny-tiny percentage of the population. And yet, we're willing to throw away key aspects of our freedom and civil liberties, and bankrupt the economy, potentially putting hundreds of thousands of people out of work, in order to 'protect ourselves' from it?

Sorry, that's BULLSHIT... It makes no real sense whatsoever.

And don't talk to me about 'vaccines'.... As I said WAY back on this thread, there is nothing currently happening that in my view conclusively refutes what I predicted will happen... I'm afraid only further evidence that reinforces it!

There isn't an answer, certainly not an easy one. How would you feel if lockdown was lifted to allow 'normal' life, and one of the 'painfully low' fatalities was your wife, or your father (and remember that fatalities are 'painfully low' mainly because of lockdown and minimal social contact)?

Macca
20-06-2020, 14:12
It does seem that if you get a heavy dose of it then it can kill you regardless of your age or fitness. Whilst we can't keep everyone wrapped in cotton wool forever, especially children, it isn't safe to go back to absolute normal. And it won't be until/unless a vaccine arrives.

Marco
20-06-2020, 14:17
The answer to that question is obvious, but you can't make massively important key life-changing decisions for our country, and indeed the WHOLE WORLD POPULATION, based upon whether or not someone you know will be a victim...

What is it Spock said in that famous episode of Star Trek, when he was sacrificing his life for others: 'The needs of the many, Captain, outweigh the needs of the few', or something like that?

Well, in this instance, as sad or unpalatable as it is, that's the cold harsh reality!

However, I'm still DEEPLY suspicious of who or what is behind the creation of this 'New Normal' and what they have to gain. And until someone can convince me differently, I'll stick to my (educated) 'conspiracy theory'!;)

Now we're getting somewhere... So you agree then that there's *some* merit in the theory?

The BIG point, however in that respect, which everyone's missing, is that it wouldn't be "1984 a little late", in the sense that the plan has just recently been dreamed up and happening now..

It would be "late" simply in the sense that small (but significantly incremental) steps have successfully been taken for YEARS, by the 'powers that be', as a build up to what could now be about to happen (some steps foiled in the past, simply by fate and/or the successful intervention of good over evil, which perhaps is why the process has been delayed), and so now we're simply seeing (or about to see) the fruition of those small steps having successfully been taken, and subsequently a significantly FURTHER, this time BIG step taken, in terms of how this pandemic has been deliberately manipulated, to achieve their ultimate goal: the creation of a New World Order.

The point being, just to be clear, is that I believe lots of things have been happening covertly in the background for a very long time in the build up to all of this - it's not just something that's happened 'out of the blue' or dreamed up last week!

Anyway, as you say, time will tell what will happen, and as I said before, never in my whole life have I EVER wanted MORE to be wrong!!

Why would you hope to find 'concrete evidence' of something that occurs covertly? That would somewhat defeat the purpose, no? The 'concrete evidence' would only exist when what's happening no longer needs hidden - and then you can worry!;)

Besides, if you need 'concrete evidence' for everything before you even begin questioning it [not necessarily believing in it], then there will be many things in life that may exist, but which you simply won't see... There's a quote to conjure with!

Who's to say the Bill Gates/ Dr Evil scenario isn't any different, I mean...there's no proof that it ISN'T?

This is a Theory someone told me back in the Day, and with all that's going on I'm hearing that many, many People are saying it again:

England back in 1981,

At the behest of the Thatcher Government, the new PsyOps branch of MI6 covertly approached the popular beat combos of the time "Tears for Fears" and "The Flock of Seagulls", to hide and utilise their newly created PsyOps weapon "Moog Mood Control frequencies" in their Hit Parade pop-picks, the idea being to make the populace more "suggestible" to Thatchers more controversial incoming Policies.

The then head of MI6, an unpopular Svengali type figure, one Yoffi Liftsafinga (pictured)
https://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2012/05/05/article-0-12E72B65000005DC-245_634x554.jpg

approached the heads of EMI and Sony, but thankfully the scheme was thwarted when Tears for Fears singer Roland Orzabal did his civic duty and told the Rozzers.

The Officer on the scene, a Constable George Dixon, said he's never heard of anything so devious saying "Its a Mad World right enough."

Trust me I've done my research, they tried to bury it but as always...

I really don't think so.

When Trump does news conferences, you have to remember that his primary goal is to 'make headlines', preferably first and foremost about HIM, and so will often deliberately make provocative and/or controversial statements, designed to be, shall we say, 'a little ambiguous', in order to prompt a reaction from the public - and when he gets one, he LOVES it!! The bleach example was a classic.

Yes, the guy has a planet-sized ego, which I'm not a fan of either [along with other odious aspects of his character], but he is who he is. As I said before, I don't give a flying fuck what he says in the media, as long as he gets the job done he's been appointed to do, as outlined. And he *is* doing it.

Yes I agree his words do matter and he's ill advised to make tongue in cheek comments - although I suspect no-one advises him at all anymore as he's just not interested in advice.

But this is another case of a criticism of Trump being almost as stupid as Trump. What gets me is that if you look at his record as President there are plenty of valid criticisms that can be made. Even allowing for the fact that the President is a glorified figurehead and has very little actual power.

But instead opponents tend to focus on this sort of thing. Is that due to sheer laziness? Or do they think that it plays better in the sticks than a considered and evidential analysis would? If it's the latter than I'd suggest that it's about the same level Trump operates on.

As for 'removing' him - tried and failed. Don't forget the rules, he was democratically elected and so gets to serve 4 years. Election in November, the people get their say then. Or is it okay to just forget the rules if it's someone you don't like/don't agree with? Marco.

He's got four months (having been in power for almost four years), during which time he'll have to fight for re-election.

Whoever these mysterious geezers are who allegedly put Trump into power couldn't have made a worse choice. He doesn't understand the law, more specifically he doesn't understand the limitations of his Presidential powers, so he keeps saying he will do things which are not within his authority. He also seems unable to grasp the notion of the 'separation of powers', whereby politicians make laws, but the courts interpret those laws and make judgements, which at present are mostly unfavourable to Trump's wishes. This makes it highly unlikely that he'll be able to force multiple major prosecutions in the limited time he has left, unless he intends overthrowing the Constitution, ruling as a dictator and ordering courts to act as he directs.

Another problem is the federal prosecutor. As Berman refused to stand down as Public Prosecutor, Trump had to fire him, but a replacement can't just be slotted in; he/she has to be endorsed by the Senators for New York. Both are Democrats, and unlikely to simply rubber-stamp Berman's replacement. They will want to know why he was sacked, given that the Attorney-General said he had been doing a good job. (Trump has effectively washed his hands of the matter, saying it was all down to the Attorney-General). This will further delay any ongoing investigations.

He's got four months (having been in power for almost four years), during which time he'll have to fight for re-election.

So? A LOT can happen in four months - and WILL HAPPEN - trust me!

So can we please just WAIT and see what happens first, and what TRUMP achieves in that timeframe (or otherwise) and assess things then, without you continually 'poking' what he says or does, and hounding him like a woman scorned, because as I told someone else recently [who knows who he is:D], you're beginning to sound like a broken record...

Marco,
I watched it live as it happened on PBS,
so know what happened and the context.

116,000 people (and rising) wouldn’t find this funny...
This is the guy, remember, who wouldn't let a Cruise Ship dock because infected passengers would make his "numbers" look bad.
He's more concerned about his re-election than consoling the families of those that have died, and preventing more from dying...

Which is his fucking job.
But hey, its all a joke.

Who else is on the "Hit-List" by the way?

Erm no... Remember the video posted earlier showing that the BBC 'selectively edited' his words out of context (as did many other media outlets, keen to discredit him? If you missed it, scroll back and have a look. 'HD Goofnut' posted it.

There are also other clips, all over the net, which portray events rather more accurately and show that that's NOT what he said.

And as far as removing him is concerned, remove away, once he's banged up more bad guys... Many more scum filth, like Epstein and Weinstein, are due to get their long overdue comeuppance VERY soon!:yay:

No he isn't an idiot. He's just like pretty much all politicians in that he grew up in a wealthy bubble, has never had to spend a day in his life, and so never learned a bloody thing. It's interesting that the few politicians who don't come under that description don't tend to be successful in their attempt to rise to the top.

The trouble with these things is they are so one-sided. Why doesn't he question some of the assumptions made and point out some of the errors of fact? Other medical services and hospital admissions for non-covid were not suspended during lockdown but the claim goes unchallenged. Also it isn't true that 80% of people tested are asymptomatic.

Why did deaths increase after lockdown? Because it takes time after catching it for it to kill you. 14-21 days. And the fact that the spike in deaths immediately following lockdown was followed by a gradual decrease in deaths (as you'd expect) is not mentioned at all. Presumably because it blows the theory out of the water.

The theory also makes the common but naïve assumption that 'the media' are told what to print/publish when the reality is they will print/publish whatever will get the most hits/readers and the only control the government have over that is that they can prevent publication in extreme circumstances.

Bad news gets a lot more hits which is why the media mainly run with bad news even if they have to make it up or embellish it. No-one would buy a newspaper or click on a story with the headline 'Things are, in general, going pretty well. Don't worry and enjoy your life.'

Please also scroll down and read the comments underneath... I'll pick out a few:

"You quarantine the sick not the healthy. This is a brain washing scare fear tactic".

"Social distancing is about building distrust".

"I'm 70 with a robust immune system, very actve, outside every day working or walking my dog for hours. No mask, no flu vaccines ever and I'm not about to start now. I wish more doctors would come out like you speaking the truth. This is being blown so far out of proportion that it is painfully obvious that there is some other agenda at work here. Why so many refuse to see it and willingly give up their freedoms is beyond me."

...etc...

Marco.

Gotcha! Well, I've watched it and my initial brief thoughts in no particular order are as follows (I am supposed to be working, after all - *cough*):

- Yes, I agree that some people are taking it to extremes, but then you'll always get people who do this! Gasmasks are ridiculous but when I was in Singapore at the end of February when it was just starting, the advice was for people with symptoms to wear face masks, which seems sensible enough.

- She says there are no long-lasting effects from the disease. The people with permanently scarred lungs thanks to viral Covid-19 pneumonia might disagree with that.

- She only touches on the issue of people with the disease and no symptoms, which think is a more crucial issue. My mother is 88 and frail - she is currently in hospital as she fell down and broke her hip three weeks ago. Luckily she's in a certified Covid-free hospital but part of the reason for this was that they stopped visitors back in March, so I can't go and see her. However before this, my sister wouldn't go into her house and set the shopping down at the door for her. I did go in because I did little jobs for her but I made sure I didn't get close to her and wiped down anything I touched, simply because I knew how devastated I would be if I turned out to be an asymptomatic carrier and inadvertently passed Covid onto her without knowing. If she caught it, I'm sure it would hit her hard, possibly fatally. Heck maybe it is all a hoax and she'd be fine regardless but I wasn't prepared to take that risk.

- Ultimately my opinion is that moves like social distancing are necessary because of the gross stupidity of most of the general public. You see plenty of people ignoring the 2m rule and I'm sure that, most of the time, it doesn't make much difference. But if you're telling them 2m they'll think that 1m is fine, then when you tell them 1m they'll think 50cm is OK and so on. A bit of common sense is actually all that is required but this is something that is woefully lacking in most people in this country.

But finally, the most important thing I learned from the video:

- Ooo, Dr. Sam Bailey is cute! I'm going to watch more of her videos... ;)

Marco
25-06-2020, 00:00
Lol - what are you like?:D

And if that video was a MUST watch, this one is a MUST MUST watch, and in my view shows what will eventually happen with the data that they receive from us, in relation to our health, as a result of this virus, and its potential misuse to try and control us in future:

https://youtu.be/9Pxw-G9iFVc

Don't allow the government or authorities to make emergency measures that have been taken [involving analysing your biological functions via technological devices] to supposedly help control the spread of this virus, to 'stick' and become the 'new normal', long after the virus has gone, by using it to control you EVEN MORE in future!

They can't monitor your biometrics from a cellphone, you have to be wearing a device. If you don't wear a device then they can't monitor your biometrics. So unless they make wearing a fitness tracker compulsory then he's talking bollocks. Are they going to do that? I doubt it. Would it even be possible to enforce such a rule? No.

It probably is [I hope so], but it's still something worth considering, as the truth is we don't *know* what is possible and what isn't, especially with new technologies and how they could be used to facilitate an agenda and make people behave in a way, which in normal circumstances they wouldn't consider, especially when fear is used as the driving force.

After all, a few months ago we didn't think that whole countries being put under house arrest could be enforced, our kids stopped from being educated, us from earning a living and not even being ALLOWED to touch or cuddle our loved ones. So if fear can be used to force us from practicing such innate human behaviour, it could certainly force us to wear tracking devices for dubious 'health reasons'!

The truth is, we don't yet know how many MORE ways this virus will be used by the government as an excuse to monitor and control us in future - but one thing's for sure; the more we continue to meekly acquiesce to the demands put upon us, instead of en-mass, simply refusing, and casually relinquishing our liberties in the process, the more the 'new normal' being imposed upon us is likely to become permanent.
