Is that why you're allowed out for a drink provided it comes with a sit down meal? Line your stomach so you're less likely to get pissed and be a knob?

Marco

We rarely go to pubs just to drink anyway, so it suits us! Quality pub grub in a convivial setting, in good company and with pleasant and friendly staff (no riff-raff), is always the main attraction, as well as quality local real ales, should such be on offer...

BUT - the food always comes first!:)

I think that's the reasoning behind it, and those more likely to want to go to these type of places are as you say; less likely to be falling all over each other after downing 5 pints on an empty stomach!

So, do you have a really crap memory, or was you born forty? :ner:

That sort of thing is not for me, not any more, but in my yoof I'd have go at pretty much anything, often to excess, and I turned out ok :) Course it's all different these days, a lot get pissed before they even leave the house, and when coke gets thrown into the mix (ridiculously commonplace these days) there's no reasoning with them. So getting them to comply with Covid regs? No chance!

Course this isn't every punter, just enough of them to ruin it for everyone :(

Done plenty of that stuff when I was in my teens, but as soon as they were over, I got bored with the idea of 'going out and getting pissed', especially as there wasn't the same attraction in it for me, as I'd been used to drinking alcohol (albeit in small quantities) since I was about 10 (wine diluted with water at meals).

The drinks cabinet at home was always full of all sorts of stuff my parents enjoyed, and I didn't feel tempted to 'raid it', simply because I was introduced to alcohol early in life and so it wasn't a big deal. From about 12/13 onwards I was enjoying a small aperitif before lunch with my parents, then a small glass of wine with meals (it's an Italian thing), so unlike with Brits I had no compulsion to 'go mental', when I was 18 and legally allowed to drink in pubs - just a different culture, which I still practice now:)

There's WAY too much obsession in this country with alcohol and going out and getting drunk - too many pissheads, which you simply don't get to the same extent abroad. I enjoy alcohol, but always in moderation and so would have ZERO interest in getting into such a state that I was sick or couldn't stand up, and just behaving like a total idiot (I can do the latter sober:D), so simply wouldn't go there.

My haircuts are similar to DIY jobs, Mrs. P is my barber. But with a couple of important differences - she never asks if I'm going anywhere nice for my holidays as she knows I'm bloody well not, and she never offers me "something for the weekend", apart from maybe a lawnmower or paint roller :(

My barber stopped asking me if I needed "something for the weekend" years ago. My then girlfriend though it a strange thing to ask, not understanding that it was a 'men only' environment (along with the magazines :D), and for some men it was less embarrasing than going into a chemist.

Today the same barber shop is staffed by both male and female hairdressers, and the typical topic of conversation is bloody Covid!

I haven't been to a traditional men's barber since I was a kid, as they've always tended to be full of old men!:D

So.... I prefer what are essentially ladies hair salons, with either women working in them, who know how to cut men's (short) hair, as many don't, and so normally the job of a 'senior stylist', or men who generally know how to cut men's hair.

I much prefer the vibe, and indeed have always been someone who prefers mingling with other people my age or younger, and of course some of the girlies who work in these salons aren't too 'hard on the eyes';)

Lol.... It's all part of the entertainment, plus I enjoy building up a rapport with a particular stylist, a bit like a bartender in a local bar, in that respect, in that I can walk in and they know what I want without asking for it.

I've known my current stylist, who usually calls at home, but had to isolate after a friend of her daughter's tested positive for Covid (hence why I visited a salon), for nearly as long as I've known Del. I think I first met her in 1990, in a salon in Wrexham, when Del and I were living in Glasgow but used to come and visit her mum, and she's now become a good friend to both of us.

I just enjoy building relationships like that, and as I've said before, I'm someone who's always enjoyed female company, as I usually get on very well with women!

Yeah, they've gone too far there, I think. Luckily we only use supermarkets for buying food and drink, toiletries and cleaning items, very little else - all unquestionably essentials.

It'll certainly make the checkouts in the likes of Asda, Tesco and Sainsbury's a dam sight speedier, as one of my pet hates are the idiots who buy tons of kids clothes and hold everyone else back in a queue, while the assistant removes the bloody hangers and security tags!!

It's a pointless, futile excersise. The numbers may be high in places but are also low in others.
All that will happen is economy gets screwed again and when lifted it will happen again. Eventually people will die of food shortages, insanity or be shot rioting.
Imo govts are just trying to cover their arses and hide behind ropey science which has proved it doesn't work long term

Marco

Glad you're coming round now to my way of thinking....;) I've been saying the same thing for months!

One thing it'll do though, is stop folk going for 'jollies', just to get out of the house, as happened in garden centres during the spring, with all the sheep queuing up for sun loungers and parasols...

TBH, *if* (and it remains to be seen), the knock-on effect of the two week 'firebreak' results in more normality over Christmas, it'll be worth it - BUT it all depends on what the 'exit strategy' is!

More like RUINING the country... What exactly are his 'leadership qualities', then'? I'm asking simply because he hides them so well!! As I've said, I don't necessarily agree with some of Drakeford's recent decisions, but he seems a sincere man with his heart in the right place, unlike BJ-Boy.

And if this 'firebreak fortnight' results in a significant drop in infections, and subsequently to us (in Wales) enjoying a more normal Christmas, whilst you lot are in lockdown and forced to endure a 'digital Christmas', then he'll deserve a medal, and I'll be on here saying....

I’d have thought that locking down the areas with a high R number and letting the areas that aren’t so badly affected to continue to trade and (relatively) go about life as usual, as opposed to slamming the door firmly shut on the entire population would be a sensible and intelligent thing to do. Wouldn’t you?

General public: Can we please buy an egg?
WelshLabour: Why, of course you can
General public: Can we buy an egg cup to eat said egg?
WelshLabour: Hell no, you’ll kill us all!!!
General public: Ok, can I bathe my child?
WelshLabour: Go right ahead
General public: Can I buy a towel to dry my child?
WelshLabour: Absolutely not, no way, this would be the death of all mankind.
General public: Can I at least buy my child new clothing so they’re not cold?
WelshLabour: Are you mad? We will not let this happen, not ever, it would be catastrophic to the population.
General public: Can we at least buy cleaning products to minimise the spread of the Wu-Tang virus?
WelshLabour: Don’t be stupid, of course not.

Etc etc etc

I was going to say that the above is a light hearted look on things in Wales, but I can’t as its actually and quite unbelievably happened.
But, yes, I agree that none of the practices are perfect, and there’s no one size fits all solution.
That said, there’s practices that are relatively sane and then there’s Welsh Labour and Drakeford.

I don't think it's so much the transactions which are a concern, but people travelling out to buy stuff, and the social mixing that arises. Also, some articles in shops tend to be handled before purchase - think birthday cards or CDs. I quite often enjoy looking through birthday cards before selecting (or not) one to buy.

I'm trying to think of examples of "non essential" items which really are.

Probably things like tools - and tap washers - to stop major water damage if one's plumbing goes wrong.
Toilet syphons - so toilets keep overflowing.
Fuses for electric plugs, so that what they're connected to work.
Engine oil for cars.

On the other hand some things are less immediately essential, surely - such as:
Interior decorating paint (exterior paint probably helps to preserve surfaces and reduce/avoid problems in the future).
Luxury foods - such as caviar.
Curtain fabric.

Over to you ....

PS: Isn't the thing about supermarkets and non essential items to give a more level playing field to other smaller shops? Example: birthday cards - which presumably can still be bought in card shops, small shops and post offices.

Another one - flowers - go to a local florist.

Yes, I totally agree, and it's very well documented that I'm passionately and fiercely protective of my freedoms! However, the lockdown was announced well in advance - it certainly didn't come as a 'surprise', so there was AMPLE TIME for the general public to plan for it.

His mistake was the late introduction of the the ban on buying 'non-essential items', which should've been announced at the same time as the lockdown. However, much of what you've said is of course exaggerated for effect, as ALL of the things you've mentioned above any organised person should already have at home in abundance, such as clothes and towels (plenty to last 2 weeks), certainly anyone with kids. And if not, then it's their own fault!

In any case, as I said let's see where we are in Wales on Nov 9th, and whether or not the measures look likely to have had the desired effect (of course there will be a delay for the 'catch up' to happen), and if they have, then for me MD should be applauded.

From what I know of him and his behaviour to date, he's certainly isn't the authoritarian, draconian type (quite the opposite in fact); he's a passionate Welshman trying to do what he thinks is best in the long term for Wales and the Welsh people, but at the same time (contrary to what you think) is a strong enough leader not to be afraid to take any tough decisions that he thinks are necessary in order to achieve that, and which is precisely what he's done.

The fact is, despite what you think of them, both he and Sturgeon have had the 'balls' to do what they think is right, whether you or I agree with it or not, thus have shown proper leadership qualities, unlike dithering, bumbling Boris!

Good post, Adrian. I fully concur!

The problem is folks these days are so bloody disorganised and used to not having to THINK, with everything being available to them in shops, 24/7, so there's no need to plan properly.

Therefore, if something is 'urgently required', they just run out to the supermarket, making umpteen unnecessary journeys in the process over the course of a week, when some proper planning and organisation would limit that necessity - and limiting that necessity (along with people's movements), and therefore the further spread of the virus, is the whole reason why these new measures have been implemented.

Look at the ridiculous panic buying, for example, that takes place in supermarkets every year on Christmas Eve - simply because the shops are shut for ONE DAY!! 'OMG, just HOW are we going to cope for 24 hours without buying yet another bag of sprouts or pint of milk, 'just in case'??'

Fucking madness!!

So TBH, if you can't go 2 weeks without buying a towel or ]yet more] kids clothes, for kids that already have too much and WAY more than they need, then take a good look at yourself, not the Welsh First Minister!

Marco.

Can we stop using the word 'leader' in reference to politicians? It isn't their job to be 'leaders' any more than it is our purpose to be their 'followers.'

The concept of political 'leaders' is very left wing/Orwellian and certainly not something we want or need in this country. I know that you see the term used often in the media but it is fundamentally incorrect. A Prime Minister or First Minister is the leader of their political party, not of their country. If you are not a party member then they are not your leader.

Well, they (a prime minister) will 'lead', in terms of being the figurehead [ultimately the one who carries the can for the result of government decisions] and who outlines those decisions to the nation, and which they will certainly have had some input in.

He (BJ) is also leader of the Tory party, and IMO a very poor one, in comparison with the leader of the SNP or Labour party. And Mark Drakeford is the leader of the Welsh government, and in that respect, IMO, doing a far better job of it than BJ is in his role!

The other point of course with the 2-week lockdown in Wales, is that it was probably decided to make it national, not regional, in order to send a simple message to the Welsh people about what they can do and where they can go, within a set timescale, unlike the regional 'tiered system' shambles, full of confusing mixed messages, that's taken place in England, where many folks haven't got a scooby-doo what they're doing or when the restrictions are ending!

In that respect, Boris should take a leaf out of Drakeford's book, and look up the meaning of CLARITY.

No I disagree that they are 'figureheads' as much as I disagree that they are 'leaders' (except of their parties). In the UK the monarch is the 'figurehead', in the USA and France it is the President.

I don't think any of the politicians are doing an especially good job but then this is one of those situations where it isn't really possible to do a good job which is why defining it along some sort of party-political or personality line is absurd. There are some problems that cannot be solved easily, and some that cannot be solved at all. Covid is in the latter category. No amount of 'great leadership' will make any difference whatsoever to the outcome.

Disagree away, and I'll disagree back - the fact is, nothing either of us will say, will change our respective opinions on that particular matter!:ner:

Regardless, as you say, they're still leaders of their respective parties, and IMO, Sturgeon is doing a far better job in her role [as a leader] than BJ is in his.

In that respect, I stand firm on everything I've said. Yes, some things aren't easily solved or can't be solved, but that doesn't mean decisions taken to try and solve them can't be clear and concise, instead of as clear as mud!

I'm sure it's been mentioned in at least one of the 431 pages before this, but I can't believe anyone would seriously believe there is a link that exists between all the individual world powers and the rise of Covid inside a year. Certainly there will always be those that will try to turn the situation to their advantage, the 'good day to bury bad news' type but certainly not the whole planet.

Conversely I am hoping all those with the basic intelligence to wire up a loudspeaker to play sounds from their separates (you dont even need to get the polarity right, unlike people like me that use a headphone jack to achieve same) , would believe mobile tower deployment and the rollout of 5G is behind the suppression of dissent, much less the spread of the next strain of the common cold.

Unfortunately I have extended family members that are sucked in by the 'compelling' evidence of Covid 19 being a tool for new world order (and Covid 21 - snigger). When I am asked to comment I always pull up this scene with Otto and his parents from Repo Man whilst hypnotised by the evangelist on the telly.

If independence ever happens and I'm not a hopeful, nor particularly wanting it, then I can assure you snp will lose next election

Of course you could, but as with anything like this you have to wonder how true some of it is. Politics these days is all about slinging mud and hoping some sticks.

I picked one of the more interesting ones - 42. *Kenny Maclaren SNP councillor suspended for book burning.

Book burning? Sounds like the Nazis. But what was the truth?

And in fact a quick search shows that no books were burnt. What they actually burnt were some copies of The Smith Commission Report (yes, I had to look that up too) as a publicity stunt.

https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/politics/snp-councillors-suspended-burning-copies-5352635

And then you wonder how many of the others are true...

Whilst I couldn't care less whether the Scots go independent or not I don't like the SNP because they are socialists. Even so just goes to show you can't believe everything you read, even if you'd really like to.

Even so just goes to show you can't believe everything you read, even if you'd really like to.

Indeed. And also *wanting* to believe as FACT that which you've read best fits your belief system or political bias, using it as 'proof' to support its veracity, and in turn creating a false smug belief of 'correctness', in an attempt to score points against others with different beliefs!;)

Hilarious.

socialist ideals per say are not bad; quite the opposite, but like most things, shouldn't be taken too far. Once you start heading into a "nanny state" then that is not socialist, but more communist imv.

PS, if Scotland did ever get independance, the SNP would be one of the first to go after the uk controlled so called Scottish tories and Scottish Labour who are just puppets; hence why they do so badly now.

I dislike ALL forms of extremism, which is why I hate 'ist' and 'ism' labels, as they're too black and white and only represent one way: 'my way or the highway', when no such rigid way is ever right. Such selfish and blinkered absolutism only leads to division and hatred.

I like 'happy mediums' and middle grounds, as that's usually where there's most chance of achieving fairness and equality for everyone, in all aspects of life, which is my mantra. The biggest problem with the world, especially now, is the existence of GROSS INEQUALITY, especially when it comes to the division of wealth.

However, I also support entrepreneurialism, and the right to 'build one's own empire', within reason. Therefore, I believe that personal wealth, whilst allowed to flourish, should always be capped and never provide any single person, or small groups of people, with such levels of power, that it gives them the ability to impose control or rule over huge sectors of human life, solely in the pursuit of personal gain.

So with that in mind, stick whichever political label on me you like!:D

.

The division of wealth thing always interested me. What would happen if we pooled all the wealth in the world and divided it out equally?

If you don't count derivatives but do count everything else then there's approx £175.5 trillion dollars of wealth in the world. Assume 7 billion people so if we whacked it out we'd each get £25,000 dollars. Bear in mind that this includes the value of property so a lot of us would be considerably poorer. However the poorest 2 billion people would be 25000 times wealthier than they are now.

Trouble is this does not take into account debt. Global debt (individuals and countries) is approximately 200 trillion dollars. So if we clear all the debt before dividing up the wealth we're left with minus 25 trillion dollars. In other words we'd each be left with a net debt of $3.5K.

Those already in more debt than that would no doubt find this welcome. For the rest of us not so much, including the poorest 2 billion who would actually be much worse off than they are now. But it would be fair and equal.

Martin, by 'fair and equal', as with everything else (as I'm a 'happy medium' guy), I mean *within reason* and as far as possible. Perhaps I should rephrase it as (much) fairer and more equal than it is now?

And major steps should be taken, in order to achieve that. As I've said before, the BIGGEST beef I have with the division of wealth that currently exists, is that such vast amounts of the world's wealth is divided among so few people - the 'super elite'.

In my world, there would be NO multi-BILLIONAIRES, verging on or becoming TRILLIONAIRES:nono:

You'd be allowed to attain a certain level of personal wealth, say for talking sake, £50 million, and then be forced to donate the rest (in a properly controlled and managed way) to the poor and needy worldwide, and in the process begin to build a fair(er) and more equal world than the one that currently exists!

I'm not good with finances (my wife regularly reminds me of this :)), but surely the total debt of 200 trillion dollars is owed to someone/s, so wouldn't that all go in to the pot and be part of the distributed "wealth"

Well have to admit my post was a bit tongue in cheek. Just wanted to point out that the whole thing with money and debt is complex and it isn't as simple as just doing a Robin Hood and robbing from the rich to give to the poor.

As far as the debt goes that's 'money' that is created out of thin air. If you borrow £100K off the bank to buy a house they don't actually give you £100K of their own money out of the vaults. So no, you can't count the debt as wealth.

Macca
25-10-2020, 13:08
Also it isn't a zero-sum game. If Geoff Bezos gets richer that doesn't mean someone else has to get poorer. So the idea that people hoarding vast sums of money means there is less for the rest of us doesn't hold water. Nevertheless, blaming rich people for poverty does play well in the sticks.

Marco's point about individuals being wealthy enough to influence the political process does have some merit to it. But really it's mostly the big corporations that have that power, not individuals.

Added to which wealthy individuals can't actually access most of that wealth. Most is in shares which they can't just cash in for various reasons. Bezos may be 'worth' $170 billion but he doesn't have that in cash at bank.

Once you compare that to government spending, it's a drop in the ocean. UK government spent £772 billion in 2016-2017 - US Federal government spent over $4 trillion last year.

Even if you confiscate all the super wealthy people's 'money' it would be gone in a matter of months and wouldn't change things very much if at all.

But surely the bank needs to have that money kept somewhere in some form? This is what I can't get my head around - this global debt must be owed to someone on this planet who had that money to lend.

A 'high street bank' has to have - in theory - ten percent of the money it lends in actual concrete assets. The rest it produces out of thin air. That £100k mortgage has £10K in the vaults and the other £90K is 'created' when you borrow it.

Merchant banks - gambling on the international unregulated global casino aka 'the stock markets' - have no such restriction. They used to but then it was decided that was a bad idea. Result was the financial crash in 2008.

Google 'fiat currency' and 'fractional reserve banking.'

Going on Martin's earlier posted figures, I can't see many people wanting to 'redistribute the wealth', not until they've satisfied themselves that they won't personally be any worse off. Fred Bloggs next door is told that he must give up his £200,000 house and move into a £100,000 flat in order to distribute the wealth fairly. Fred didn't see that coming, and wishes he hadn't voted for it.

And so what about the individuals who own the big companies, one of which you mentioned earlier (Bezos), and someone who's profited MASSIVELY from the Coronavirus pandemic, and with the slow (but sure in time) death of the high-street, is set to become even richer and more influential in future!;)

He's someone I'd love to 'relieve' of a few billion, but most importantly in the process, GROSSLY REDUCE his influence on how people shop, thus keeping his monopolizing tendencies in check and handing more power back to the high street!! Gates and Larry Page would be two others I'd gladly 'demonetize'.

That would be one approach but it would be very difficult for a number of reasons. You subdue Bezos/Amazon another pops up to take his place. The market always runs ahead of legislation so you're always playing catch-up. Plus by making such significant changes in what in business is legal and what isn't you risk running into lot of unintended consequences many of which would be counter-productice.

As Tony Soprano says, 'Every thing you do affects some facet of everything else.'

A more effective approach would be to establish a rival influence on government thus offsetting the power of the corporations. You don't change the system to win, you game the system to win. With the internet this is no longer an impossible dream. Doubt it will ever happen though.

Not if you prevent them from doing so by 'disincentivizing' the accruing of huge wealth, from ground roots level up. If you know from day one you're only going to be allowed to earn so much, or it'll be taken from you and given to others who need it more, then you're less likely to want to become another Bezos!

Possibly, but I don't like 'sticking plasters'; I prefer fundamentally fixing problems *at source*, so would seek to change the system, as the current one is rotten to the core. And it could be done IF you had enough power and influence, but used it for the benefit of good, not evil....

Who or what decides how 'the system' works? THAT is what I'd attack first with all my might!

Oh Steve, put me down for one of the chunky Kit-Kat's.

I don't know but I'd make an educated guess the currency markets alone employ hundreds of thousands of people world-wide from the top brokers down to the office cleaners. Plus you still have to pay tax on your profits. And all those people have to pay tax on their salary and on almost everything they buy with the remainder. Which they spend on goods and services thus spreading it around.

So it isn't wealth creation but it is economic activity which you need too.

As long as we have capitalism we will have the morality of the market, that is the market decides. People shop online because they get exactly what they want, at the best price, usually anyway there are exceptions. The internet brings with it a tendency to monopoly because it feeds a world wide market, so your average shopkeeper can now broaden his market to not only his local high st, but the entire fucking world!! Admittedly this wont't work if someone in outer Mongolia wants a pint of goats milk, but it will work for say a cycle shop. Has it killed the high street? Well the shops just get turned into something else, like another bloody coffee shop, or a charity shop, yeh its killed the street, this is only the beginning, like I said, its unstoppable, the morality of the market always wins.

Good post, Mike. I fully concur. So essentially then you're saying that capitalism has 'created' the current 'system'? Too many years under Tory rule, I guess?

As I said, that's the problem with 'isms': they're too extreme ONE WAY, and capitalism in that respect is no different from socialism or communism. Extremes of ANYTHING are never the answer!:nono:

However, all to some extent have good points, so if you could take all of those and combine them into a new 'ism'. that might be the answer. 'Rationalism', perhaps?

However, the problem is those behind whatever 'ism' represents the bias of the political party in power, only ever want their policies to be true to the values of their chosen 'ism', so you end up with the extremes of those 'isms', instead of happy mediums, and with ordinary people being subjected to the worst of those extremes, which with capitalism is the grossly unjust and unfair division of wealth and opportunities.

However, people are also their own worst enemies and, so along with capitalist-minded Tories, have helped create 'the system' we have now. When shopping, people today (although count me out) are WAY too driven by price and convenience, and not enough by QUALITY, so the mantra has for some time now always been 'cheap as possible is best', together with the minimum possible effort required to get it, simply because no-one today has any time!

Therefore, it's no wonder then that the high street is dying, in terms of the existence of shops that are actually worth having, not cheap, chavvy convenience shite, charity shops and mediocre eateries. So 'the people' [today's couch potato, mouse-clicking shoppers] have got what they wanted, or perhaps what their lazy, superficial, dumb-ass behaviour has created. Hell mend them - and it will only get worse!

Just watched Mark Drakeford announce what will be happening in Wales, after the firebreak on Nov 9th. Travel will be allowed anywhere within Wales, but not outside of it, which is fair enough, and also all pubs, shops and hospitality industries will reopen, along with meeting other folks from one more household, so that's good and will mean our social life is rekindled once more - woo-hoo!

What we'll have to watch though, and is a potential worry, is all the pissheads from England trying to cross the borders into pubs in Wales, to have a drink, so I just hope that they put some TOUGH measures in place to prevent that. If it were me, I'd just completely close the borders to anyone from either country without an essential need to cross them (work or care-related, etc), and police them accordingly, with HEAVY fines handed out to those who don't comply!

If it were me, I'd put the bloody army on it, and man all borders with machine guns - that'd soon keep the c*nts out!!:guns::guns:

In that scenario, I'd be championing for the Welsh to stay the fuck away from England, so this is nothing to do with an anti-England bias, in case anyone mistakenly thinks otherwise!

To be brutally honest, if I were a landlord right now of a Welsh pub, I wouldn't be serving anyone with an English accent *who couldn't prove that they either lived or worked there* - not difficult to do with some form of ID - as proper STRICT ACTION needs taking now, in terms of trying to prevent the spread of further infections, if we're to slowly rid ourselves as much as possible of this fucking virus, and have our lives return to some form of normality, sometime soon!!!!

Exactly! That's what DRASTICALLY NEEDS DOING, and should've been done, MONTHS ago, particularly at airports!! One of the main reasons we're in the situation we're in is because of a rather laissez faire, apathetic attitude towards STRICT border control and people's movements between those borders, both nationally and internationally!!

It might be possible for a low population backwater like New Zealand but there's no way that is possible for this country.

In a normal year tens of millions of people come and go from this country. Even if you do test them all which is pretty much impossible it only takes a handful to be missed and you've got your virus back.

Marco
02-11-2020, 15:15
Why can't you prevent folk from coming to and entering the country in the first place? That could easily be done with enough proper enforcement! As I've said, bring the army in if needed.

If the country you live in has LAWS ENFORCED that don't allow travel to a country which currently isn't allowing any visitors, and the intended destination country of the traveller in question has LAWS preventing and ENFORCING any visitors from coming in, then you have CONTROL of your borders, and subsequently as much control as possible of the spread of the virus!

But the problem is there's been too much dillydallying and pussyfooting around in that respect, especially by BJ-boy in No10, who's about as decisive as demented pensioner.

If the authorities to date have managed to enforce national lockdowns, and shut down the countries in question, then the same authorities can enforce proper border controls!

So you stop everyone coming and going and then you keep that up for how long? Forever? Just not remotely realistic.

The strategy is a controlled approach to herd immunity, the actions taken so far only looks like indecisiveness if you think the strategy is to eradicate the virus. It isn't and it never has been.

Not forever, of course not, but for however long is necessary in order for the measures to take effect, the principal behind which is exactly the same as that of the current lockdowns. Therefore, you lockdown the airports, seaports and railways in the same way (allowing only essential travel), until the time is right to remove those restrictions (a lowering of the 'R' number, for example).

Armed police, or the army, enforcing such a law, at all border entry points, would've soon prevented anyone being tempted to travel abroad, outside of a genuine emergency!

And you really need to take your BJ fanboy blinkers off, if you think his recent actions have been in any way decisive. Why then didn't he decide to impose the recent national lockdown in England, during half term, when all the schools were closed anyway, thus limiting the spread of the virus, as stats currently show that the source of many new infections is in schools and colleges!!

With weekends taken into account, there would've been nearly 12 days of naturally uninterrupted time to put a brake on transmissions in said areas, during the school holidays, but he 'decided' not to. WHY?

Answer: because he's an inept, clueless BALLOON!

He's not our 'leader'. We're not a troop of cub scouts.

Actions will be taken based on the scientific advice. Obviously lockdown is to be avoided due to economic damage, but if the advice changes (with the developing situation) from 'we don't need a lockdown to 'we've now got no choice' then of course we'll have a lockdown.

As always there's only one goal and that is to prevent the hospitals being overwhelmed. As long as that does not happen then the government is doing a good job.

It would be good to be able to achieve that without another national lockdown, which is what they've been trying to do, but if the experts say it is necessary then it has to happen. They government are not going to ignore their advice.

I shouldn't really need to explain this as it's all blindingly obvious

Going by recent figures I think the UK may have just crested the peak of the second infection wave. Of course the immediate post-weekend figures can look high, but we haven't had those yet today. By Wednesday or Thursday we should see more clearly what the trend is. Unfortunately, repeated falls and rises to peaks in infection are probable I think.

Seeing today's figures, it looks like the recent downward trend is continuing. If things follow pattern and the decline continues during lockdown, it will probably bottom out around mid Feb. Then we'll head for another peak, hopefully less pronounced, somewhere around May/June. Of course, the introduction of any successful vaccine, should it happen, would influence this.

Yes, but it's not just about that! There are other equally as important things to consider that the government are responsible for and have failed in. Firstly I'm not a Johnson Fanboy. I voted for him/tory in the last election because it was the least worst option. Given the choice between the robber barons and the people who will persecute you without end because their consciences demand it I'll take the robber barons every time.

I think Boris is a likeable character but that was not a major influence on my decision. I do think he has intelligence, confidence and charisma and I think those qualities are important in a PM so that was an influence. But it was a considered decision based on many factors.

I was interested to see what he could do given the chance, I didn't have massively high hopes. But I thought he might do well getting us through Brexit. Obviously that was all pre-covid.

Reducing that to me being a fanboy is a cheap and desperate shot. Suggests you don't have a better argument.

Mistakes - well it's easy to be a monday-morning quarterback. Anyone who as part of their work has had to implement a complex project, especially on the hoof, knows that you're not going to get everything right. So I would cut some slack regardless of who comprised the government.

The original lockdown decision could have been made a bit earlier. Some say two weeks, I'd say a week. It's a big step to take. How much difference that would have made to anything though? I'd guess not a lot.

I'm interested to know what the deal is with the dodgy looking PPE contracts. Prima face it does look like some people got a lot of money for doing nothing.

Over-promising on the track and trace was stupid. But that's a stupid political decision not a medical one.

Otherwise, as i said, the sole overriding concern with any pandemic is to prevent the health services being overwhelmed. If they can continue to manage that then overall I'd say the handling has been competent. Not perfect, but competent.

And really that is not to the politician's credit since they don't actually manage any of the processes. They make decisions, but even then they make them based on advice from the experts. It's a brave politician who goes against the expert advice, especially in public health crisis. That's why regardless of who the government was or who the individual politicians were we would not have seen things pan out much differently.

I don't actually see covid as a political issue at all which is why I get puzzled by people trying to make it into one.

As I keep saying, but unfortunately it's not sinking in, I'm simply telling it as I see it, and IMO, based on what you've written here to date, you've *come across* as a BJ fanboy [note that this is rather different from ACTUALLY being one], simply because up until now I've seen little evidence of you criticising him - and indeed plenty of the opposite!

Btw, in terms of your comment about BJ being "likeable" and having "charisma", that's only because you're English and see things only from an English perspective (or at least again that's how you come across). Otherwise like me, the very LAST thing you'd find him is 'likeable', as all he cares about is England, or to be more precise, London and the south.

He really couldn't give a damn about the rest of the UK, hence his disgracefully unfair treatment of the people of Manchester, Preston, Liverpool, etc, who have borne the brunt of his bias, thus subjected to the ever-present north/south divide, with some of the government's decisions taken over lockdowns, and therefore why he's strongly disliked by many 'northerners'.

Mark Drakeford too, is on record as being rather frustrated with BJ's lack of communication and avoidance tactics, when pressed on issues relating to what's in the best interests of other parts of the UK, outside of his 'favourite zones', while attempting to deal with this virus. So it's therefore no wonder BJ is considered as a c*nt by those he has patently shown such contempt towards.

There are other examples too of his apathy towards anything he considers doesn't serve the best interests of England or his core Tory supporters. He's supposed to the PM of the UK, and therefore have the best interests of the WHOLE OF THE UK at heart, not just the places he considers as most important!

That's why he's disliked or detested by people from the places I've mentioned, which have borne the brunt of his bias, and particularly Scotland, as he gives a damn about that even less than he does the north of England.

P.S It's my understanding, based on what MD has said during his TV 'coronavirus conferences', that he takes advice from his own scientific advisors, which aren't necessarily the same as those followed by BJ. That was why, for example, Wales were later than England in making the wearing of face coverings mandatory in certain places, and also why a national 'firebreak' lockdown was implemented there before England followed suit.

Lol - well, sadly your lovely mum is as confused over judgements of character as she is over who's PM!;)

However, the 'relevance', since you asked. is that most people [i.e. the general public], when it comes to appointing a new PM, vote for who THEY LIKE, i.e. on personalities, not just policies [witness Trump, for example], so if you think someone's a c*nt, then no matter what other 'talents' they may have, you won't vote for them; conversely if you think the sun shines out of someone's arse, then you're more likely to turn a blind eye to their failings.

That's how most people think. It's largely only the politics geeks who study the subject in detail, and who base their decisions in that respect, solely (or mostly) on policies.

Anyway, this is going nowhere useful, as we're political polar opposites - and polar opposites in many other ways too, so best leave it there.

That was heavy going. :(

But I watched the whole thing. I always suspected that Money was an illusion.

I'm a worried man. I expect we'll get through this though.

The dreaded virus has now moved 10 yards over the road from me.

The 4 Portsmouth University students who dwell therein have been diagnosed positive.

I really think the University should be shut down. Tough as it will be for the local economy at about 10%. It's a menace.

And honestly, who needs to pay for University these days? It's all on the Internet anyway. Stanford University lectures are free.

And you've always been free to walk into lectures at French Universities.

Far higher standard, IMO.

We hope. And that is cheerful news.

My medical practise have been nagging me for a 'Flu jab.

But as a viewer of dismal news, the Mink outbreak in the State of Denmark might put the Kibosh on vaccination. A new variant.

Personally I fancy my chances. Slim, healthy, albeit old.

But the wreck of the economy is what worries me.

I'm not having the vaccine, why should I line the pockets of the pharmaceutical companies, it probably won't work anyway

Ok there won't be a shortage of Christmas puddings, but they won't be as good

Mince pies will probably be rubbish too, I read somewhere that there's a worldwide shortage of mincemeat due to Covid

Mistletoe? Forget it! I don't even kiss my wife. And I don't care if they've been vaccinated

And I won't be bothering with any Christmas parties. That I never get invited anyway is beside the point

General release, yes defo, probably around spring time next year, but I did predict earlier that the oldies would get the first batch around Christmas.

Whilst not really meaning to be flippant, it'll be interesting seeing how they react to the vaccine, and how many 'pop off' due to a bad reaction... I'll be watching that one VERY closely! And also how others willing to take it react when the vaccine becomes available for general release.

Regardless, I still wouldn't touch it with a very large bargepole!!:nono:

On another subject, I just received an email from one of our favourite local pubs, outlining the new rules after the 'firebreak' lockdown, particularly now that neighbouring England is in lockdown....

I quote:

"Further Updates to Post-Firebreak Rules Monday 9th November

Hello yet again!

Just to bring extra joy into all of our lives there was a further update from Gov.Wales as to what we must do in terms of verifying the ID of customers when visiting us.

Groups of 4 or less (adults)
For those that we don’t already know, and in an effort to avoid Mickey Mouse or Scooby-Doo visiting us, we may well need to verify your name for track and trace purpose. With this in mind please ensure that you bring something like a credit card or driving licence.

Groups of 4 or more (adults)
To ensure that you are all from the same household and are living together, please would all members bring some form of printed document or letter that includes their name and address on it.

We hope that you understand that we are doing this because we must, not because we want to.

Hopefully, see you very soon!

The Crew at The Boat."

Hear, hear - and quite right. So if you can't prove that you're all from the same household, and live in Wales, then essentially FUCK OFF!!:clap:

Well, you can take it for granted that if your required ID doesn't show a Welsh address, there'll be questions asked! That's certainly what I'd be doing if I were a landlord now of a Welsh pub.

I wouldn't just want proof that customers were from the same household, but also that they lived in Wales! Otherwise, strictly NO ENTRY:nono:

We really need a thread about Covid-19 jokes.

You know the sort of thing. Because I used to share a flat with a Lloyd's underwriter. Whatever disaster befell the World, Lloyd's had an achingly funny joke about it.

I think you are right about Edward Jenner and smallpox.

Pasteur was more interested in a nasty milk related germ causing, er, Brucellosis. Hence the milk we drink these days is Pasteurised.

I am not a medical expert.

So many nasty germs in the World. I have seen Polio, Malaria, Diptheria, Rabies, Shingles and Pneumonia at work. You don't want to catch them.

Anecdotally, this current inter-species Covid horror has been around for years. Possibly infested Bats in South America near banana plantations, and hence the workers were at risk.

The tour guide advised social-distancing from them. They tended to a strange illness.

Bats sleep in huge groups during the day. We are talking millions here. A breeding ground for germs.

My friend came back from his tour of South America feeling very unwell 2 years back. He thinks it was Covid.

struth

ive had shingles and pneumonia 3 times.... not nice.. swine flu pandemic too.. yes there are a lot of potential nasties in milk before pasteurization, hence why it was enforced.
Dorset farmer Benjamin Jesty was first to do the smallpox vaccine apparently, but Jenner got the credit as he worked out exactly why it worked.

Smallpox was a really horrendous disease and when I was growing up it was not that uncommon to see survivors about, they were seriously 'pockmarked'! My science teacher when I was about ten was a survivor and was very badly scarred. The rash could be all over and even internal and mortality was high!

I love the old horse-racing. Missed Dakota Gold the other day due to my bookie being shut. Came in at 4-1! Oh well.

Possibly the most life-threatening disease ever was Cholera or Typhoid.

Not many people now this, but at the height of the British Empire, about 1850, your chances of living past 30 in London Town were slim.

The Thames river was an open sewer. Drinking water was contaminated with disease.

Got so bad we built drains. Happily they were over-engineered. Have hardly needed upgrading since.

From my perspective;
The people who' at the moment are totaly against accepting "the vaccine" i think would be much more aproachable on the subject if there was independent un-biased testing and examination of said vaccine, taken randomly from each batch, that really is the only sure way that everyone who accepts it can at least be sure they are getting the exact same Vaccine as say; those who are in positions of power ie; government, and royalty just two examples, but i am sure you get my point.
The main problem throughout this whole affair has been a total miss-trust in those who have been elected to look after the interests of the nation.

Marco
10-11-2020, 14:38
The people who' at the moment are totaly against accepting "the vaccine" i think would be much more aproachable on the subject if there was independent un-biased testing and examination of said vaccine, taken randomly from each batch..

Exactly my view, too.

Firstly, I'm not 'anti-vaccines'; I'm simply anti any that MY judgement criteria, not that of the 'officially appointed experts'], who may be biased towards their efficacy for any number of reasons (commercial and otherwise), I consider as having been rushed through, thus not adequately tested [again based on MY judgement criteria], and therefore *potentially* unsafe.

I'm afraid I simply don't sign up to the notion of 'The powers that be have told us that it's safe, therefore it is', so I'll just open my veins and let it drip in... For me, that's lazy, and potentially dangerous thinking, particularly because once this stuff is inside you, and if it stimulates an adverse reaction and in the process does untold damage to your system, there's likely NO going back!

So for the reasons above, and those you've outlined, that's why I won't entertain taking a vaccine for Covid, under ANY circumstances, but also because I'm fit and healthy (and largely always have been) so have faith in the ability of my immune system [and help of the good Lord] to deal with the virus, should I catch it. Yes that's possible, and who knows what might occur if it did happen, but that's MY risk to take with MY own body.

Also, being someone who's only ever vaccination was a BCG jab at secondary school, and who's never been outside of northern Europe [therefore needed immunised against this or that] or contracted any major disease otherwise, I'm not naturally predisposed to being vaccinated and having my body pumped full of chemicals. I don't even have the flu jab [not had a cold or the flu for years], and take no forms of medication whatsoever. I even fight the urge to take paracetamol if, on the odd occasion, I get a headache!

So... as I've said, aside from any potential 'dodgyness', as outlined, over the vaccines being introduced for Covid, I'm simply not a 'vaccine kinda guy', so will be carrying on as normal, until this bloody nightmare is over (or as over as it can be) and praying that those who take the vaccine find it effective and safe, and it subsequently allows the world to return to some form of normality, sooner rather than later.

Marco.
