Guys, I'm not taking sides here, as I can sympathise with elements of all the views that have been expressed, but let's just remember that this is a sensitive subject and that many people have died and lost loved ones as a result of this virus.
Therefore, it's not really the place for backslapping viewpoints that others may find offensive, and so I'd ask that everyone shows due consideration for that fact and tries to be a little more considerate. Ta!:)

This is absolute madness..full lockdown should be kept in place until at the very least, all of the adult population has been vaccinated.
I'd go with that. We are nowhere near out of the woods with more cases per day, more hospital cases and more dead than in the previous peak last year. If the media had it's way we would all be out mingling, clubbing and socialising now with no restrictions. A nightmare in the making.

Vaccine or not; allowed to or not, I really wouldn't want to fly for a holiday for quite some time - just the thought of all that recirculated air and close proximity to others really puts me off the whole idea (and I am really desperate for warm weather and a swim in the sea :()

Nah, there are some lovely picturesque little seaside towns, way off the beaten track, and Pembrokeshire has always been somewhere we've wanted to visit. It's very much 'the land that time forgot', and been ravaged little by modern commercialism or consumerism, meaning that life there is more 'real' and closer to how it once was back in the day, which suits us down to the ground!:)
So we'll just book a nice hotel somewhere central, and tour around in the car, probably go sometime late Aug/early Sept, where by then things should be largely back to normal:cool:

Hopefully that's be the case, Guy, although in normal times, during the summer months, I'd always avoid very touristy places, such as Devon or Cornwall, as even if where you're staying is relatively quiet, the surrounding towns often aren't, and I can't be doing with crowded places.
Anyway, if you go, I hope you guys have a great time and the chance to enjoy life again, as we could all do with a break!!:cool:

Sounds like a plan...that's what people should do when they go abroad...stop away from the commercial holiday hotels/sites...and venture out into the sticks and see the old way of living. My old pal, who's passed on now, used to visit places, where he told me there was one shop in the village that sold everything...the fruit and vegetables, were still covered in dust and soil, the way they had been picked...he also said he would regularly step out the front door and pick oranges from the trees in the village...the country...Spain...But I can't remember the name of the place...It'll come to me...:mental:
I stayed in some place in Spain back in the late 1980s and there were chickens running around in the street. Can't recall the name but it was near to San Sebastian. Properly rustic anyway.
There was a power cut while I was there so we had to go to a cistern and draw water by hand. The locals said that wasn't out of the ordinary.
Might have changed a bit by now I suppose.

No me neither, if i have a holiday booked I usually don't think about it until the night before then find I've got no clean clothes. And I average a holiday about once every five years.
But I know people who always go three times a year and as soon as they come back they are counting down the weeks to the next one.

What? So in the last year they haven't managed to work around the issues? What, is the virus on their site stopping trucks from getting in and out? Shell, Esso and BP certainly don't have problems having oil ready.

TBH, when we're abroad, we try and avoid ALL tourists like the plague, no matter where they're from, and as much as possible mingle with the locals, which is reasonably easy in types of places where we usually go [way off the beaten track]:)
One of the nicest things for us is being in some lovely little village in France, without a tourist in sight, and sitting in (perhaps the only bar), having a few drinks and chatting to the locals in their lingo (or at least I do) - Del just smiles nicely and lets me know when she needs a refill, or if she spies a dress shop/boutique she wants to have a look in [read as undoubtedly buy something from], and I'm employed as payer/translator!:rolleyes::D
Being petite, she gets a lot of her clothes in France and likes many of the French fashions, as they're a bit different from here.

And 'heaven forbid', no internet or mobile phones, let alone Smartphones etc. No television. No supermarkets. Oh, and few had cars!

ive found out a fair bit about myself through this and found that maybe i will change the way i live out my life too. freedom is a precious thing that we should embrace, but it has to be responsible freedom. Even a taste of freedom curtailment has affeted many, so imagine if you ended up living like Chinese or other countries that just force you to do what they want.
So everyone needs to keep their guard up for their own safety, that of their fellows and make sure governments do as WE want them to.

Yes of course, and I acknowledge that. Your argument (and similar) has been presented many times before, but whilst it is relevant, it doesn't really fit, in terms of acting as an effective comparison with the current situation.
Firstly, the world is a very different place now, and subsequently so are the people who populate it [as are their respective needs, based on the former], so you can't really apply 20th century principles to modern day living.
Secondly, whilst all you say is true, at least families could mix, pubs and restaurants/cafes/dance halls/cinemas were open, where people could socialise, have fun and take their minds off of the drudgery of everyday life (as you've outlined), and if you had a car (count my parents and grandparents in) you could travel around, go to the seaside, etc.
Unlike now...!:doh: Where fundamentally we have much LESS FREEDOM... *That* is the key point!
And crucially, where there exists a different type of "everyday drudgery", which is no less painful or real in its own right, BUT where we're all being kept prisoners in our own homes, climbing the same four walls, day after day, now since 20th of December, and before that too with the previous lockdown, and a daftee here (lol) is suggesting that we should just 'put up' with another 3 months of this hell...:mental::nono:, and who knows whether even once everyone has been vaccinated, that we won't be facing a similar situation again this winter??
Nothing is certain with this virus, but at some point we going to have to learn to live with it (just like we do with many other fatal diseases), rather than continually living in fear of it.
But to demean the very real hardships that many are facing now, and which most of us here are fortunate enough to have been able to avoid, by essentially saying 'Oh give it a rest, as folks had it much worse in the old days during the war' is both disrespectful, mate, and fundamentally misses the point.

im inclined to feel that by time things start opening next month the majority of the at risks will be safe, or as safe as they can be, and a good number of others too. Infection rates may go up a bit but vast majority of those wont be lethal.
The lockdowns should only go on if death rates are going to go through roof and, well we will have to see what happens. It wont be a complete lifting so, as said before the country needs to start opening up a bit.
People like myself will probably continue to avoid others for good while tho but can do that on their own back. others can get about and we see if the vaccines are working. Its gotta be tried sometime.

Precisely, and another 3 months of full lockdown, in order to allow for everyone who wants vaccinated to be vaccinated, IMO would incur too much (possibly irreversible) financial damage, not just to the economy as a whole, but to people's individual livelihoods.
It's all very well focusing solely on potentially dying from Covid if you're old, don't work anymore, don't have any young kids, don't socialise, and overall don't really have to *DO* anything much on daily basis, but for everyone else, it's got to a critical stage now where life MUST *start* returning to some sort of normal, or there won't be much left to live for!

I'll say only one thing more on this matter...and it's from a soothsayer called mad-moon....for the future...espcially the 15th " I told you " ;)
I'm guessing there were lots of option on table, and may still be. A gradual opening is first step.
Will it work? Well sure we all hope so but I expect hiccups, as I'm sure there will be in any way. We still have lots of infections although they are mostly by some people who are not following the rules and getting infected and then passing it on.
Where I live the teens are all having group meets and drinking and then committing crimes.
A recent survey has found over 40% of over 80's are breaking the lockdown as they have had the jab. Now they are most at risk yet they have had enough.
So we might as well go for it as half the country aren't bothering now.

Germany's vaccine commission has approved the use of the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab in people aged over 65.
The country previously approved it for under-65s only, citing insufficient data on its effects on older people.
That led to public scepticism about its effectiveness, with some Germans spurning it and leaving many doses unused.
But German Chancellor Angela Merkel said recent studies had now provided enough data to approve it for all ages.
Announcing the commission's decision on Thursday, Health Minister Jens Spahn said the move was "good news for older people who are waiting for an injection".
"The new data also shows that the vaccine is even more effective when the first and second jabs are administered 12 weeks apart," the minister said, adding that the law would be updated to incorporate the new recommendations.
Mrs Merkel said on Wednesday that Germany would follow the UK example of stretching the interval between vaccine doses in order to offer as many people as possible an initial shot.

Case rates in England 'falling in all age groups'
Case rates in England are continuing to fall among all age groups, Public Health England says.
The highest rate is among 30 to 39-year-olds, at 121.1 cases per 100,000 people in the seven days to 28 February. That's down week-on-week from 178.3 cases.
The rate for 20 to 29-year-olds has dropped from 161.3 to 111.3, and among 40 to 49-year-olds it is down from 148.0 to 102.0 per 100,000.
The rate for those aged 80 or over is now 65.0 cases per 100,000, which has fallen from 101.8 cases the previous week.
All good signs, mate, that things are moving in the right direction, and will continue to do so, even when we gradually start easing lockdown (although as you say there'll likely be some teething problems, as always is the case with these things). There is no notionally perfect solution, so when the vaccination programme has been completed, we'll just have to get on with it.
However, now [the dates as outlined by the government] is the right time to begin the process, slowly and methodically, of returning to normality, or the normality that will exist when we've successfully learned to *manage* [the key word] this virus, and so in turn will need to learn to live with it and the continual risk (albeit grossly reduced) it will present us, as that's all we can realistically do!:)

I have problems with some recent posts assumptions.
There is no information that says if you’re vaccinated you can’t get the virus, (they think that the effects will be less) or pass it on. People are being sold on the idea that having been vaccinated they can get back to normal.
Statistics being banded around from Government bodies are reliable and true, really! ‘Flu infections and deaths are near enough zero! Are people really stupid enough to believe this? Deaths within 28 days of testing positive for COVID-19 are declared as being from COVID-19, even from car accidents.
The current COVID-19 tests are invalid even resorting to the WHO’s instructions.
Trusting the Government not to continually move the goalposts, using new variants (all viruses mutate, it’s how they survive) to extend any restrictions.
No one can seriously believe the Government has a clue (along with the rest of the World) what they are doing to our lives, they have a beautifully enhanced bubble, or if they do they’re really playing us. Pay people to use restaurants, oh shit no close them down. Open up Universities so people from all corners can congregate, oh shit no put all the pupils in isolation.

Had my first vaccination today - I apologised for arriving early; not a problem. lots of people their giving up their time to make the system work.
In, vaccinated and out again in five minutes. Very impressed, I left with a renewed faith in human nature :)

Area around injection still a bit stiff after 12 days, but no biggie. Anita had her first jab yesterday (Astrazenica) and felt pretty crap a few hours later. Too soon methinks, and more likely caught the bug that laid me up a couple of days ago.
Someone suggested my lurgy was probably a late effect of my jab, I'm more inclined to blame it on clipping clinkers off the cat's arse while eating a bacon sandwich. The bacon did smell a bit funny

Aches and pains as well, but I think that is because I spent four or five hours in the garden digging and planting new border yesterday.
I find it quite frustrating that I get so many aches now - when I was younger, I could do so much more without any consequences the following day :wheniwasaboy:

I know what you mean though about being 'obsessive'. Last week I spent about that long weeding all our paths and the driveway (with a bucket and spade, pulling them out by hand) before putting down some weedkiller. I was fine after it though, but slept well!:D

That's life for you but even a youngster not used to digging would ache after five hours of digging. You have to build up to it.
So where do you get to, and how often? And just how messy are you, to justify such lengthy and frequent valeting? I heard somewhere you have a decent stereo, I'd prefer to spend time listening to that :) Just as soon as you've dealt with that lone biscuit crumb hiding under the parking brake...

Different kind of aches when you get older Dave - younger folk get aches from untrained muscles, with us oldies it's more stiff back, ankles, wrists etc. Nice to reward yourself later with a Radox bath and some tunes.

Well, at the moment it goes to the supermarket and/or butchers, and church (which is 3 miles away) and back! But of course, if it rains, or has been raining, the game's a bogey, as it'll be full of splash marks, and black *really* shows it up!
Even just leaving it outside, after having washed and dried it, and it's rained overnight, then dried again, the 'sandy' rain stains are obvious and do my nut in... The car's got to be in 'showroom condition', inside and out, before I'm happy!:exactly:
Plus, as I've said, if it's in any way dirty inside, the resident princess here won't get in it, lol!!

Lol - we're quite different then, in that respect, as like Grant I can chillax in a nice hot bath (listening to choons, as we have ceiling speakers in there connected to the main system and soft 'mood' lighting) for ages, or listen to the footy on the radio!:)
Showers are fine for convenience and if you're in a rush (which for me is rare), but there's nothing like lying back and relaxing, submerged in all those suds and playing with your wee submarine!:lol:
Del usually has a shower, but if she has time much prefers a long soak in her (roll top enamel) bath, as long as I run it for her, light some scented candles, and bring her a glass or three of chilled Prosecco!:D

Yeah, I heard you returned yours after disappointing results with absorbency, but especially after that incident with the Velcro tabs giving way in the middle of the bog roll isle in Asda, simply due to the weight of a full 'morning load'... I told you before, and Anita will back me up, you should always have a dump (and a proper clear out) after your breakfast, before venturing outside, so I hope you've learned your lesson!:doh:

However, the garage is currently full of all sorts of crap, so there's no room for the Brabster, and in any case, the plan is to turn it into a dedicated dining room, so we've got more room for entertaining (read as Del having more of her pals round to 'play with'), and also possibly to double as a small restaurant, which may be a plan for when she retires (that is if she f still feels like working:D), but she does love cooking and likes the idea.
Instead, in terms of the car, we're going to have a large car port built (with a proper tiled roof), which will house both of our cars. Yes, Del's got a little runaround, but it rarely gets used now the college she works in is in Wrexham and within walking distance (used to be 12 miles away), and she prefers the exercise, or if she feels lazy on the way back, she calls and says she wants picked up.
She going to sell her little runaround (A-Class Merc), as she WANTS a red Jeep, like Melinda from the Ghost Whisperer (her absolute FAV programme, see here: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0460644/), Melinda shown in pic below:

It's quite girly, so I could defo see her in one of those - and there's certainly plenty of room to store all the carrier bags after I've taken her shopping!:doh::eyebrows: So once things return to some semblance of normal, I'll take her to look at some.
As for using Del's runaround to do the 'errands', thus keeping the Brabster clean, yeah sure, but that rather defeats the point of having the latter - as I *LOVE* driving it, plus being the type of car it is, it needs driven and USED, otherwise engine-wise it suffers.
So, no, once the car port has been built, the Brabster (or whatever eventually replaces it) will stay much cleaner for longer, but until then it's simply a case of washing it and keeping it clean, and which I actually rather enjoy!:cool:

Lol, nice, but too aggressive (yes 'butch') looking with the big wide wheels. I'd drive that, in black, but Del would want something daintier. What she *really* wants (but defo ISN'T getting) is an original Fiat 500, in red, which are absolutely tiny wee cars and very cute (perfect for her), as shown below, but sadly totally impractical.

It took me about two years [and numerous strops] to convince her it was a non-starter though, and that I wasn't been mean for not letting her have it, so she doesn't always gets what she wants - there is a limit, lol;)

Interesting mate, and she'd probably like the shape, but being a 2-seater it'd also fall into the category of 'impractical', as she'd want it to be able to carry stuff too (all her college folders for starters, which are numerous), but also on significant shopping trips, plus she likes the Jeep because it's 'high up':)
Not sure that the boot would even be big enough to house the booze bought for one of her 'girly nights in'!:D

Why can’t she have a Fiat 500?
My mate has one and it’s an absolute hoot to drive, although it is a typically appalling piece of Italian design in some ways (for example, it has THREE separate switches to put the sidelights, headlights and instrument illumination on at night!)
I must admit I prefer his Honda S600 from a driver’s point of view, but the Honda makes the 500 feel big...
As you may have gathered, he likes air-cooled cars and also has a Citroen Ami and a 1953 Beetle. Even more amusingly he can fit all four into his “double” garage!
my son bought himself a fiat 126.... it was a heap of scrap, but i managed to get it going etc and sold it for a profit:D like a ride on lawnmower without the blade:doh:

Lol, because it's too small to hold anything much, unreliable (from the Fix It Again Tomorrow era of Fiats), and left outside of a garage in all weathers, in a UK climate, would rust to the point of ruin in ten minutes!

Cool/cute, yes, practical no. Both of those boxes need to be ticked, hence why a red Jeep is the front runner. A Fiat 500 Abarth was considered, as believe it or not, Del likes sporty cars, and I was seriously tempted, as I'd have loved driving it too, but again you won't get much inside one!
And the Jeep will likely also be used for 'booze cruises' abroad, which it would facilitate rather nicely:cool:

Looks more orange to me, mate.... But that's often the case with computer screens. If it's red, then I like a deep (slightly darker than pillar box, verging on crimson) red, as does Del.

That Volvo C40 would be my choice, and its 0-60 (under 5 seconds!) sounds like fun. But I bet they will want silly money, which is a shame. Anyway, Volvo's rep for reliability has been slipping in recent times if Which? readers' experiences are anything to go by.
Still want one though :)
