Italy is to make it compulsory for all workers to have a Covid "green pass" - proof of vaccination, a negative test or recovery from the virus.

The measures are a first for Europe and some of the strictest in the world.

Anyone without a pass will reportedly face suspension from work and may have their pay stopped after five days.

True, but the movement of people is hard to control. I would also say that France were behind the U.K. in terms of the vaccination roll out.

Missed Saturday's figures, as I was down in Birmingham, so yesterday in the UK (with Friday's figures shown in brackets below): https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/:

Positive tests: 45,140 (44,932).

Deaths: 57 (145).

Hospitalisations: 915 (827).

So... Not good news, in terms of notable rises continuing with new cases and hospitalisations. The latter was simply inevitable, considering the continuing rise of the former. Apparently, the majority of new cases is in the 12-15 age group, so with half-term approaching, that may help knock things on the head. Deaths, as we know, are artificially low, due to it being a Sunday.

We'll see later what today brings.

In Wales yesterday (with Friday's figures shown in brackets below):

New cases: 2,965 (3,130).

Deaths: 10 (18).

I am going home to Venice on the 2nd to see Mum and Dad after 2 years I am really looking forward to it even if I will have to spend my week holiday in quarantine
Green pass there is a minor thing, one need to carry ID at all time or spend the night in a secure and one need to provide ID when buying a sim card for the phone and a id card when getting cigies from a machine.
walk out of a shop or a bar whit no receipt and both you and shop get a fine. skip voting at the elections and that could be bad.
I use to be stopped and searched by any one of the 4 different police forces at least 3 or four times a week back in the 80's just because I had long hair.
So green pass is nothing

The point I'm making is that Italy has always had a very strong fascist following and history, so it's no surprise that a claimed 80% of the population would be behind such a dictatorial, fascist ruling!

We've seem similar types of coercion though, here in the UK, in terms of the government pushing for vaccinations, with care-home workers being told the very same thing as said workers in Italy, and also the introduction of 'Covid passes' for entry into nightclubs and large public venues in Scotland and Wales.

Don't think that BJ-boy won't be implementing 'Plan B' shortly, and following suit with said passes in England! And then who knows where it might lead...?

As I've said before, NO country purporting to be truly free and democratic should *EVER* be seeking mandatory vaccinations - and via the back door, through coercion, as BJ-boy's attempting, is just as bad as the front!

Lol... Well, would the same thing be true if broadcast, say, in Naples?;)

I'm being somewhat tongue-in-cheek, but if the British public were asked to vote for or against something as odious as below, being proposed by their government:

"Italy is to make it compulsory for all workers to have a Covid "green pass" - proof of vaccination, a negative test or recovery from the virus. The measures are a first for Europe and some of the strictest in the world. Anyone without a pass will reportedly face suspension from work and may have their pay stopped after five days."

...80% would NOT be in favour of it! You'd be lucky to get 50%.

That's because Italy (and also France) has always been more sympathetic towards the notion of state control, and predisposed to having an authoritarian mindset, as opposed to libertarian. You only have to look at the strictness of their respective police forces, compared with ours, to see their very different attitudes to authority and how they impose it on their own populations.

In any case, *exactly how* can the above highlighted in red, which is clearly coercion, be part of a democracy...??

And for those who value their civil liberties and living in a free society [count any decent, right-thinking person in], as opposed to a fascist police state, *THAT* is not something you want to see gather pace and become more widespread, with this pandemic used as a convenient excuse for such!!:nono:

Is that the sort of regime you (as in 'one') would like to live under? Well, just sit back and accept it, and allow authorities to roll out said 'Green Passes' into other essential areas of life, in order to become the 'new norm', and see what happens....:trust:

Somewhat later than usual... Yesterday in the UK (with the previous day's figures shown in brackets below): https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/:

Positive tests: 43,738 (49,156).

Deaths: 223 (45).

Hospitalisations: 921 (915).

So... New cases come down, halting their continual rise for the last few days.

We'll see where we are tomorrow, and whether if things continue in that vein, there's a cause for optimism, or if it's simply a 'blip'. Death's back up to a more 'realistic' level, and the highest they've been for a while, reflecting the rise in both new cases and hospitalisations. For now at least, the latter remain stable, but still much higher than they've been before the recent spike.

In Wales yesterday (with the previous day's figures shown in brackets below):

New cases: 3,200 (6,398).

Deaths: 2 (20).

The figures are crazy sometimes, as they've often jumped up and down like this before, so you wonder whether the highest figures simply reflect a previous lag, and subsequent update in data, therefore making the lower figures somewhat false, or (hopefully the case), as in here, a genuine big reduction in the number of new cases. We'll see where we are later today. Same also applies with deaths.

I find Dr John Campbell's calm and intelligent analysing and summarising of the scientific data for Covid, and where we are currently with the pandemic, interesting, informative and easy to follow, and done in a way that's blissfully free from the hype generated by the mainstream media.

Therefore, if you like to keep abreast of things and be properly informed of the facts, and where we're likely to be heading with this pandemic in the coming months, then I'd thoroughly recommend following this chap's output. Here he analyses the current data, in terms of new infections, deaths and hospitalisations, and how it's likely to affect us in the coming months, plus discusses herd immunity, which instead of vaccines, many others and I have always said would finally be our way out of this thing.

So, for all the above reasons this is worth watching:

https://youtu.be/FVBzaTnDZKo

His belief is that cases will continue to rise, both in the UK and US, going into the autumn and winter, which will result in increased hospitalisations, but that the herd immunity effect will start kicking in by the end of 2021, and because of that, cases will be going down by January/February next year, but that we've still got the next few months to get through first.

I fully agree, and that's why we shouldn't despair too much about things getting worse, as they will, over autumn and winter, before they get better:)

In the meantime, I also fully agree with this view, which I found in the comments section underneath the video:

"This virus is not going away anytime soon if at all. What herd immunity means at this point is we should see less and less people with severe symptoms in the coming months - breakthrough and reinfections will be our boosters. A truly usefull measure of this is not case numbers but ICU patients with verified Covid pneumonia, cytokine storm, etc. If we continue to focus on case numbers we'll never get out of this!"

Indeed, so in the months ahead try not to focus too much on case numbers, as they don't really tell the true story.

Vaccination is 90% effective at preventing deaths from the Delta variant of Covid-19, researchers say.

The data, released by the University of Edinburgh, was gathered using a Scotland-wide Covid surveillance tool.

Figures suggest the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine is 90% effective and the Oxford-AstraZeneca jab 91% effective at preventing deaths.

It looked at people who have been double-vaccinated but who have tested positive for Covid in the community.

The study is the first to show across an entire country how effective vaccines are at preventing death from the Delta variant, which is the most dominant form of Covid in the UK.

Researchers defined death from Covid as anyone who died within 28 days of a positive PCR test, or with Covid recorded as a cause of death on their death certificate.

The study analysed data from 5.4 million people in Scotland between 1 April and 27 September this year.

During this period, 115,000 people tested positive for Covid using a PCR test in the community, rather than in hospital, and there were 201 Covid-related deaths recorded.
Tracked in real time

No deaths have been recorded in those who have been double-vaccinated with the Moderna vaccine in Scotland, according to the data.

Researchers said it is therefore not possible to estimate this particular vaccine's effectiveness in preventing Covid-related deaths.

The research team from the University of Edinburgh, University of Strathclyde and Public Health Scotland analysed the dataset as part of the EAVE II project - Early Pandemic Evaluation and Enhanced Surveillance of Covid-19.

It uses anonymised, linked-patient data to track the pandemic and the vaccine rollout in real time.

Positive tests: 52,009 (49,139).

Deaths: 115 (179).

Hospitalisations: 959 (869).

So... Cases continue to rise (now topping the 50k mark), along with hospitalisations, as predicted by Dr Campbell, therefore I guess we'll be seeing this occur for a while, as we enter autumn and winter. Thankfully, however, deaths remain on a steady downwards trend, which I suspect will largely remain the case due to vaccines and more effective treatments of people in hospital.

In Wales today (with yesterday's figures shown in brackets below):

New cases: 4,240 (3,450).

Deaths: 13 (13).

The UK government has got it wrong IMO. NHS and scientists agree we need some precautions, such as wearing masks, social distancing etc as in Scotland and Wales yet we are free to go around as if Covid has gone away. Borders are wide open to just about every country in the world and mass gatherings are back to normal. Practically every country in the world are taking precautions except England.

Meantime the cases are increasing at an alarming rate and all the Government is saying is 'take care'.

Meantime the cases are increasing at an alarming rate and all the Government is saying is 'take care'.

yup still wear masks in shops etc. schools and colleges seem to be the biggest areas at moment. the double vaccined seem to be living better if the catch it.
im still being very cautious but picking up shopping at collection points now, wearing mask of course. trying sainsbury pick up tomorrow. see how they are. it'll double as a car run too.

I don't necessarily disagree, Dave. yet despite that, cases are still rising in Wales. Look at the stats for Wales I've been posting for the last few days. I think Scotland (and possibly N. Ireland) are the only areas of the UK currently with lower numbers, so the problem doesn't just exist in England.

4,240 new cases reported in Wales today, as opposed to 2355 in Scotland, so the mask-wearing and social distancing is going well, eh?;)

It would certainly be interesting to know why there are less cases in Scotland now than Wales - i.e. what the mechanism responsible is. Scotland has a bigger population, too.

just saying.. i'm doubled jabbed but still got covid a fortnight ago, just one semi rough day apart from that no problems.

I'd enquired about my booster covid previous and had been told I'd hear in due course ( ie fuck off) I've enquired with my practice and told no flu jabs available but I've booked into a Superdrug pharmacy on Monday for a paltry £14..

There's something going on in the background I think and I'm not liking the feel of it..

Around one in 55 people in England are estimated to have had Covid in the week ending 16 October, according to the Office for National Statistics

That's an increase on the week before, when the figure was one in 60.

At the peak of the second wave in early January, around one in 50 were estimated to have coronavirus.

In Wales it is estimated one in 45 would have tested positive, while in Northern Ireland it was one in 130.

Scotland saw a decrease with around one in 90 estimated to have had Covid

Scottish numbers: 22 October 2021
Summary

2,902 new cases of COVID-19 reported
35,188 new tests for COVID-19 that reported results
8.8% of these were positive
19 new reported death(s) of people who have tested positive
60 people were in intensive care yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19
894 people were in hospital yesterday with recently confirmed COVID-19
4,299,649 people have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccination and 3,888,408 have received their second dose.

NHS Lanarkshire has moved to the "highest risk level" as its three hospitals are at maximum capacity.

The military is already providing additional support at University hospitals Hairmyres, Monklands and Wishaw.

But the health board described occupancy levels as "critical" and said the "sustained pressure" shows no signs of easing.

It also confirmed some elective cancer procedures have been cancelled.

Earlier this week, NHS Grampian became the latest Scottish health board to ask for military help amid the pandemic after NHS Lanarkshire and NHS Borders.
'Relentless pressures'

NHS Lanarkshire deputy chief executive Laura Ace said: "We are facing relentless pressures, bed shortages and staff shortages due to sickness, stress and self-isolation and University hospitals Hairmyres, Monklands and Wishaw are all at maximum capacity.

There's 16500 hospital beds in Scotland therefore only 5.4% of beds are occupied by people who have tested positive for Covid (but some of those will be in hospital for some reason unconnected to covid and would therefore be in hospital anyway). Have to conclude that those three hospitals being at maximum capacity has little to do with Covid.

OK so after years of Government and NHS management mismanaging the NHS, the shit is hitting the fan. FFS what a surprise.

In years of management I was expected to be proactive, and forward thinking, with a 5 and 10 year plan, updated monthly, it staggers me that this doesn’t happen. Any plans had to have risks and issues outlined and mitigated for, all this in a formal document.

WTF is going on?

It’s almost as if the failures are planned!

Trend analysis and modelling , with all the masses of statistics available seems to be ignored!

Government by panic for the masses!

Given that the “science” is active, who predicted the nonsense that if we had a viral pandemic, vaccination would be the answer, given that said vaccination does not prevent spread.

So we sacrifice lives to save the NHS, does this make sense to anyone?

We closed down Nightingale hospitals....why?...Oh they were hardly used.

Talk about piss up and brewery.

not what the report you quoted said though, it clearly implied that Covid was the issue. Inclined to agree with Gary that the real reason is incompetence. It's built in to any very large organization, public or private.

Today in the UK (with yesterday's figures shown in brackets below): https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/:

Positive tests: 49,298 (52,009).

Deaths: 180 (115).

Hospitalisations: 1,065 (959).

So... Hospitalisations break through the 1000 barrier again, I doubt we'll see things get better (in any area), before they get worse, so folks, let's strap ourselves in for the ride!

In Wales today (with yesterday's figures shown in brackets below):

New cases: 3,296 (4,240).

Deaths: 11 (13).

its folk who have had covid in many cases and obviously some that have it now. a double whammy. the incompetance is in not making sure staff are available for hospital and care homes plus home visit carers. that is the major problem. jobs are being offered to folk who are in these jobs with better money etc so they are leaving in droves too.

Incompetence in staffing is far too simplistic, it goes much further.

As I’ve said before, the Government both national and NHS are guilty of not seeing the solution, but not recognising the problem whether purposefully or sheer stupidity!

I’m repeating myself again......if you want to protect the NHS you concentrate on effective treatment so people don’t get hospitalised, did they do this no, they sent alleged cases home to get worse or die!

The case for lessened infection capability of “jabbed” people is not proven, and the way masks are utilised in reality is just plain stupid. Does every scientist walk round not using their eyes? Where’s the MSM on how to wear a mask to the WHO’s conditions for effective interruption of airborne infection? The Government’s outline how to make a mask is laughable!

Kin hell people, just think FFS!

Sorry to pluck this bit out of the post, but it got me wondering...

If the vaccines can either guard against infection, or at least mitigate the severity of such, is it possible that many of those 'double jabbed' (by being largely asymptomatic) could be unknowingly infecting others? (assuming the vaccinated may still be able to pass it on).

If so, folks who thought that they didn't need the jab as the great majority who had it will help to bring about the end of the pandemic may be in for an awakening this winter.

So imo the case for being vaccinated is not about protecting others, but more about self-protection. Like the wearing of seat belts and crash helmets.

I can see and understand this, but on the other hand, the long term effects of vaccination after vaccination are definitely unknown. So, in the end the vaccinated may be in for an awakening long term.

Assuming the vaccine is self protection, with an unknown lifespan, then an intravenous vaccine drip would be appropriate apparel.

Before I respond properly, could you clarify what you mean by "an awakening"? I'm pretty sure I know what you're getting at, but just want to be sure.

As for the rest, the vaccinated can indeed still transmit the virus. Vaccination only reduces transmission by (a claimed, but not proven) 50%, so that still leaves plenty of scope for the vaccinated to pass it on!

So imo the case for being vaccinated is not about protecting others, but more about self-protection. Like the wearing of seat belts and crash helmets.

Absolutely so, and has always been the case, which is also why the introduction of 'vaccine passports' is much more about coercion and government control, than protecting others!

Indeed, but not forgetting of course that the effect for most (i.e. the non-elderly without any serious underlying conditions), is mild, flu-like symptoms at worst, otherwise we'd have had a MUCH more serious situation on our hands.

"Most" equaling the overwhelming majority of the population. Whilst not wishing to underplay the seriousness of the virus for those most at risk from becoming seriously ill or dying from it, we must not lose sight of that fact.

Well at the time of me being vaccinated my belief was that I was not only protecting myself, but also protecting others from being infected by me (if I haven't got it I can't spread it, simple) The truth appears to be rather different though.

But not different enough to make me think twice if I had the choice all over again.

Source is Public Health England as of August 2021. If course if you're going to doubt any data presented then there's no point discussing it further. But based on that data an unvaccinated person is roughly 3 times more likely to end up in hospital than someone who has been vaccinated.

You have to weight that chance up against the chance that there is some totally unknown and very long term negative consequence to being vaccinated, which based on available data and medical knowledge of vaccines, is just a superstition.

I wouldn't necessarily dispute that data, but all you're doing is proving that the vaccines are primarily designed to protect YOU, which we already know.

The data I'd like to see, however, is on how much is transmission of the virus to others prevented by vaccination, and I'd want to see accurate and reliable sources for such, from our experts and authorities, not simply 'informed guesstimates', such as I've only seen so far.

After all, it's a key figure, and if properly understood would put a lot of things into focus, including how we limit transmission going forward.

Quite a few studies done on that, they all get similar results, here's one of them https://www.medrxiv.org/content/10.1101/2021.10.14.21264959v1

Effectiveness of full vaccination of the index against transmission to fully vaccinated household contacts was 40% (95% confidence interval (CI) 20-54%), which is in addition to the direct protection of vaccination of contacts against infection. Effectiveness of full vaccination of the index against transmission to unvaccinated household contacts was 63% (95%CI 46-75%). We previously reported effectiveness of 73% (95%CI 65-79%) against transmission to unvaccinated household contacts for the Alpha variant.

So you're less likely to get it in the first place and less likely to pass it on even if you do.

Well, personally speaking, I don't spend any more time on that than other folks may do watching the evening news, reading papers, or listening to the radio. My view is that with such a serious and important matter, it's good to be as well informed *as possible*, which IME isn't best served by either glibly swallowing what's reported on the mainstream media, government lies, based on their given agenda of the day, or living in 'blissful ignorance'.

Getting closer to the truth, however, most certainly isn't best served by buying your head in the sand and hoping it'll all go away, although I'm not saying you're doing that, or only choosing to believe the stuff that appeases your insecurities and makes you feel comfortable, as often the truth is the polar opposite...

We previously reported effectiveness of 73% (95%CI 65-79%) against transmission to unvaccinated household contacts for the Alpha variant.

So you're less likely to get it in the first place and less likely to pass it on even if you do.

Well, like anything else, that's not a 'job done'. I'd need to research how the data was collated, in order to ascertain how reliable the figures were, then form an opinion based on that. Again, I'm not saying you're guilty of this, but too many people simply 'swallow' those types of figures as gospel ['cos it looks kosher, innit?], without recourse to proper scrutiny.

well read the whole paper then, it goes into the methodology in detail. I only quoted a bit from the abstract.

if you google 'vaccine reduced transmission' it brings up a number of them, they all seem to have broadly similar findings.

Sure, my point is simply that it's valid info to *take into account*, not undisputable fact. For me, if the vaccines were anything near as good at preventing virus transmission, as they are at protecting individuals vaccinated, then we wouldn't be seeing so many new infections.

meaning what? You can look at the studies, who did them , the methodology, not sure exactly what more you'd require. Google is simple a route of access, it doesn't have any connection with the studies.

Marco.

You've got to take into account the number of people in the world. Even if 90% were vaccinated that still leaves hundreds of millions who are catching and transmitting at full chat.

Take the vaccines away and number of new infections would be considerably higher, 40% to 60% higher according to the research.

No, but firstly consider who owns Google, what agendas they may have in controlling its content, and therefore only allowing studies on certain subjects to be searchable that conform to those agendas. It's no secret that the establishment often gag or suppress the views of those who seek to challenge the 'norm'.

That's why, in order to dig deep enough into areas you need to discover the 'truth', sometimes it requires going a little 'off piste' with your choice of search engine...;)

You can see what Google wants you to see, it’s not a simple route of access to truth necessarily.

How have you verified your statement “it doesn’t have any connection with the studies”?

In your opinion;) I'd call it practicing some lateral thinking. Btw, that's not necessarily to agree with what Gary's just written, but I firmly stand by what I wrote previously.

One could argue that it would be equally delusional to believe that the content of Google [i.e. what's permitted as being searchable] is freely open, and not in any way subject to bias or censorship, designed to serve the best interests of its multi-billionaire owner(s).

Double jabbed people are catching Covid and passing it on to those they live with, warn experts who have studied UK household cases.

Individuals who have had two vaccine doses can be just as infectious as those who have not been jabbed.

Even if they have no or few symptoms, the chance of them transmitting the virus to other unvaccinated housemates is about two in five, or 38%.

This drops to one in four, or 25%, if housemates are also fully vaccinated.

The Lancet Infectious Diseases work shows why getting even more people vaccinated and protected is important, they say.

Unvaccinated people cannot rely on those around them being jabbed to remove their risk of getting infected, they warn.

Covid infection protection waning in double jabbed

Vaccines do an excellent job of preventing serious Covid illness and deaths, but are less good at stopping infections, particularly since the emergence of the more infectious Delta variant which is dominant in the UK.

And over time, the protection offered by vaccines wanes and needs boosting with further doses.

Both myself and Mrs Puffin had Covid just over 4 weeks ago despite being double jabbed. Mrs P has had Pneumonia and Bronchitis in recent years (hospitalised and on intravenous anti-Bs) but thankfully neither of us had any respiratory problems. Both lost our sense of taste and smell and my taste is not that much better (no comments please)

Mrs P was wathcing an interview with the author Michael Rosen who has had Covid and he has had a lot of the same things I have had. Freezing feet and legs (on occasion) he said that the blood vessels can be affected and he is deaf in one ear. My Tinitus is much worse and I couldn't work out why....now I know.

I cycle regularly and have been out again in the last couple of weeks and it feels ok thankfully, and at least it get the blood flowing in my legs and feet. Due to have our booster jabs next week....but they are no guarantee that you won't catch it for a 2nd time. No idea where I picked it up.

Last night I was watching TV and all of a sudden I felt really shit, my heart was beating faster and a hot flush came up (could be the menopuase) and I had to go to bed. Happy Days.

I have come back from Venice yesterday
I had all my papers ready
Locator form vaccination certificate PCR test (£55.00)
At first I could not get a green pass so I had a further PCR test for E 22.00 this was at a main chemist take about 1/2 hour whit no appointment, they slot you in ! and is as good as the green pass for 48 hours.
I managed to get the green pass whit the NHS vaccination certificate later at the Pala EXPO

The white pill box in the picture from goggle maps is a Covid Centre
You get any of the 3 jabs on different flavours, PCR rapid test and green pass and what not
I had my NHS vaccination certificate, my visitor locator form and Passport it take longer to walk to the right que (of one) than to get the piece of A4 paper whit the squiggly dots printed on it all free of charge I did not even had to pay for the A4 printer paper or the toner surcharge, Toner surcharge goes at about £3.49 here in the UK:D all in all I was in and out in 1/2 hour if that

New cases reported in Italy from the World meter at under 7000
Covid: in Veneto 773 new cases and 4 deaths in 24 hours – Veneto (italy24news.com) (https://www.italy24news.com/News/253197.html)
As in the article 773 new cases just in the Veneto region

Over there 773 new cases and the fact that the figures are going up is a matter of great concern
Venice is mostly a tourist City If you go inside a shop you wear a mask!

When one wear glasses and try not to cover its nose because they steam up they will ask you to cover your nose but be very patient and give you tissues to clean them up no one not even the other people in the que make a fuss about it

Enter a bar (loads :eyebrows:) and they will ask for the green pass 99% of the times they just ask if you have one yes or no, only 2 times in a week my piece of A4 paper whit it was scanned.
You go on a bus or public transport you wear a mask! Dare not, you will be told to or the buss will stop and you be asked to leave! refuse and you will be dealt whit by one of the 4 or 5 police forces there. quite simple really

The driver area is cordoned off. he has the right to work on a safe environment!
Hand sanitizer is freely provided and I have never seen an empty both on busses and shops. a couple of times entering larger outlets I got my temperature scanned

I got asked for Passport, boarding pass, passenger locator, at both Airport on Entry and saw almost no one at Both airport exit
The £55 for the predeparture PCR all in all was a waste of money but if you are asked for one the rapid PCR test at both airports is much more expensive.

11 new cases for 100000 in Venice is considered pretty HI and a matter of concern but no one make much of a fuss about it one just get on whit it wear a mask and enjoy.

I can't see any justification for not wearing a mask at the very least. It's minimal inconvenience and can save cases rising and the inevitable deaths.

When our kids and grandkids visit, they take Covid tests before they come. Makes me feel more comfortable.

Just come back from Tesco and I reckon it's now 50/50 wearing masks. I expect some youngsters to be without masks, because they are invincible but there were several people, frail and probably in their 80s without masks. Why ?

a lot of folk think its over; well it isnt, not by a long chalk. people can only live in terror for so long then it just goes away for most part. it happened in the blitz. Of course one of the great levelers was that for most part everyone was treated equally. Boris's govt made the mistake of making it one rule for them and theirs and another for rest of us. All that is needed is a credible alternative to him and his for them to be ousted. before its too late.

Not wearing a mask in public inside is foolish and potentially dangerous especially to others.

I agree, it’s probably 50/50 wearing/not wearing masks in Tesco at lunchtime. I started wearing one before they were compulsory, and have no intention of stopping when inside with the great unwashed, even when (if) COVID is history - I’ve not caught any cold or bug (apart from one my son brought home) since I’ve been masked up so it must do something!

There was and is no mandate for any card, nor was it given per se, you had to download it or ask for one. It was purely for comfort of people that felt intimidated when asked why they weren’t wearing a mask. Neither do you have to give any reasons for being exempt. You do not need any medical documents to prove you are, indeed, exempt.

The same exemptions apply in Scotland so not technically illegal not to wear a mask.

I’ve commented on this subject in Macca’s post.

The guidance says if you’re wearing a mask, it’s only effective if worn correctly

So who’s wearing the mask correctly as defined in the WHO directive? No really who on here has read this directive, and is complying 100%?

Wither it is pointless or not is irrelevant in Scotland as by Law a face covering must be worn in certain circumstances, as detailed above.

I don't understand how people can say a mask is no use, if you cough or sneeze it will act as a barrier and stop/reduce the number of, potentially, disease ridden particulates flying around the place - more effectively than putting you hand over your face or sneezing in to your sleeve.

I agree that it is a matter of courtesy to wear one.

Just an observation (no scientific basis), I am certain that people who don't wear a mask in shops are also the ones that don't give a toss about "social distancing".
My extrapolation of my observation - can I trust people who don't wear a mask or socially distance to follow any advice on hygiene :nono:

cage helps me breathe and it also makes the mask easier to use. its on off with ear straps. hands a cleaned with alcohol. both in car. along with plenty others. mask goes over nose tightly so specs dont fog up. over mouth and chin. no gaps anywhere and cage helps with this. before i found them i couldnt wear one and although ive a badge, i didnt go out at all, as too many folk were attacking people for not wearing them. anyway i dont want to be mixing closely with people who might have it. a mask helps; its not a pancea but every little helps to stay protected. i use a good alcohol handwash a dozen times a day, even in house plus all the washing. im taking as few chances as i have to. i got swine flu pandemic and it nearly killed me. this one will finish job.

According to the leader of the article:

"It was my pleasure to provide input to God’s chosen people on such an important issue and I hope it will save lives".

What if you are not one of the chosen?

“God’s chosen people” has its roots in the bible. The Jews are thus referred to, as I remember it, no reason for the reference has been found.

As the article outlines addressing a meeting of Jews on the Covid subject it’s natural for this salutation.

If you’re not one of the chosen you may not be of a certain religious following. But as Dave Allen used to say:-
“May your God go with you”.

In Austria, vaccination against Covid will become mandatory from February. I dare say exceptions may happen on medical grounds, but I wonder how those with ethical objections will cope.

Had my booster yesterday - quick and efficient, jab bang on time (10.55). Many thanks to all those involved :)

Moderna vaccine this time (Astra for first and second), feeling a bit chilly this morning and a bit of a headache. Just had some ibuprofen and going to take dog for long walk to try and freshen up/clear my head..

Well, Ibuprofen and walk (chilly wind, but quite lovely :)) seems to have done the trick.

I need to chase up the flu jab - local GP has waiting list and local pharmacies seem to be booked up until mid/late December. I was wondering whether there is a supply problem with the vaccine?

Seem to be doing them together up here at the vaccine areas. Doc's surgery's not doing them here.
I won't get my 3rd dose til next year, so unlikely I will get the flu jab til then. I will just have to be extra careful. Means not going to daughters for Xmas dinner again alas.

Highly contagious new variant emerges in South Africa, in 2-3 weeks we'll see how harmful it is. I've been pretty lax in my attitude towards this virus, but what happens if it mutates to become as deadly as the Spanish Flu? Still can't understand why there isn't more anger at China over this.

This one, Omicron, is a real nasty bastard too...10 mutations opposed to 2 of the Delta variant...it also bypasses the vaccines with ease...face masks become compulsory again....Lockdowns round the corner me thinks...

The UK’s minimum gap for Covid booster jabs will be halved from six months to three, after the government accepted advice from its vaccines watchdog to speed up the programme to limit the spread of the Omicron variant.

The health secretary, Sajid Javid, confirmed that all adults would be offered the jab, after the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) announced that the waiting time was being cut for all adults, with priority for booking to be decided by the NHS.

The watchdog said adults aged 18 to 39 should be offered booster jabs and recommended cutting the gap between second and third doses from at least six months to at least three months.

The latest TV broadcast on Covid-19 advises opening your windows at home to let the virus out. Enlightening that it appears the virus mainly rises inside the house and when a window is opened the virus continues to rise.

Is the best protection then to lie on the floor?

Is opening a window to let the virus out to infect other people not counter productive?

Follow the science :D

I had a low grade cold for the past month, that seemed to peak in the last few days, then when I expected to recover I didn't, took a lateral flow test this morning which proved positive, had a mild temp yesterday, but ok today, with just mild aches, and generally just want to stay in. Although I do hope I'm not one of the reported 50% of cases to suffer this side effect.

It just feels like a cold, to be honest. Cough, snotty nose and I just feel a bit below par. No shivers, temperature, fatigue or anything like that.

That said, my sense of smell and taste have completely vanished, which is a bit unnerving!

Got my Covid booster this morning, feels like my arm has been kicked. Wasn't like this the last two times. Don't know why I had to stick around for 15 minutes afterwards, this apparently is only required with Pfizer. I should have asked why.

My booster was Pfizer and at the time I said it felt as though I'd been whacked with a baseball bat, it wore off after half a day though. I didn't get that with the first two jabs which were AstraZeneca.
