Just to get off the subject of female genitals, what do you Scotts (people that live in Scotland) think of your chances of reapplying to join the EU if you got independence?
Would they let you in? Can you afford it? And if not, who or what would fund it, and would you accept the euro as currency?
This may be “off topic”, but it’s more “on” than the previous page of posts in my humble opinion.

Barry
27-07-2020, 21:04
Thread drift is notorious in AoS. So in a thread concerning itself with Coronavirus and the global pandemic, discussion of possible Scottish independence and application to rejoin the EU, is as much a thread drift and "off topic" as is the discussion of female genitalia.

We'll see what the future brings in terms of the independence thing, and I do agree that at the moment it's a long way off. My gut still stays it will happen one day though, but there was certainly all sorts of underhand shenanigans going on last time we had the referendum [and I believe vote rigging], although of course there is no concrete proof.

I mean, what's all this about Russia's involvement in that respect, tampering with things? What would be their motive, I wonder, to interfere in something that on the surface seems nothing to do with them?:hmm:

Marco.

InThe Sticks
28-07-2020, 09:53
That was fully investigated and Russia were not found to have done anything untoward.
I think a lot of remainers were banking on the fact that they had though as it may have given them the chance for another vote.

Marco
28-07-2020, 10:03
That was fully investigated and Russia were not found to have done anything untoward.

Really? Got any links to show details of what you're saying, as that wasn't my impression of matters, which was that there was still an on-going investigation, and that nothing whatsoever had been categorically proven:

https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/politics/russia-meddled-2014-scottish-independence-22308246

https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2020/07/20/russia-report-kremlin-tried-meddle-scottish-independence-vote/

If true, I don't get what their motivation would be, though? Why on earth would such world giants be interested in the affairs of poor little Scotland? Anyone got any ideas?:)

Marco.

InThe Sticks
28-07-2020, 10:32
Thats what i mean, nothing was proven.
Russia i imagine would want as many out of the EU as possible as it makes it weaker, so can't see why they would want Scotland to join them (even though unless they get concessions they couldn't afford to join anyway).
I've got a recent interview bookmarked somewhere with a Russian minister explaining why they wouldn't have meddled.
I'll post it later, now off for a ride to the seaside somewhere.

Marco
28-07-2020, 11:01
Exactly, nothing has been *proven*, and by that I mean indisputably and categorically, either way. My own feeling though is that there was something in it, that underhand shenanigans did indeed take place, and that Russia were guilty, and which will come out in the wash in future.

In that respect, it'll be interesting to see what in due course the Russia Report reveals... However, you can submit information from any source you care to, which is biased towards the argument you wish to present, and of course that would apply to anything a Russian minister has to say on the matter [likely biased towards portraying Russia in the best light], therefore I'd take anything he had to say with a pinch of salt.

For me, this is a pretty balanced view of matters, and which is likely to reflect the reality: https://www.spectator.co.uk/article/why-putin-wants-scottish-independence

I like this quote:

It will also not have come as a surprise to casual viewers of Russia Today’s coverage of the referendum campaign. There was no pretence at even-handedness: the United Kingdom was on the verge of imploding and Putin’s propagandists were keen to toss in a few grenades to help out. If it seems improbable that the annexers of Crimea would care a jot for Scottish efforts to cast off the yoke of English colonial oppression, understand that the break-up of the United Kingdom would be a coup for Putin’s Western destabilisation campaign.

Indeed, and the deeply-ingrained fervent and passionate desire for a significant proportion of the Scottish people to, as quoted: "cast off the yoke of English colonial oppression", and unjust Westminster rule over centuries, and the deep disgruntlement and sense of injustice, for having been for years systematically downtrodden, felt by those people, I believe will ensure that ONE DAY independence will rightly be theirs. Much to the chagrin of some, including our bigoted anti-Scotland PM.

The Scottish people, therefore, will NOT allow the issue of independence to simply 'go away' - and in that respect, neither will Nicola Sturgeon!

Enjoy your ride to the seaside, stretching the legs of that machine of yours - it's a lovely day for it:cool:

I would guess (and it is only that) that if Russia were involved in the independence vote it would be trying to encourage a split in the UK - amongst many other things it would be with the intention of disrupting our nuclear sub capabilities, where else in the UK is there a suitable base other than Faslane? (also there could be a link because of Alex Salmonds work with RT?).

Faslane came to mind to me also. Not to mention other bases that cover the 'Iceland Gap' area.

On the other hand the 'Russian interference' amounts only to postings on social media designed to influence readers to vote a certain way. No more than that. It seems unlikely to me that this would be in any way effective. On the other hand it does provide some illusory comfort for those people who otherwise cannot understand why so many people continue to reject their political ideology.

yes, but Spain are highly unlikely to send in the tanks and troops if one of their regions decides to go it alone. Whereas that's no problem for Russia.

Spain has said they would veto an attempt by an independent Scotland to join the EU which would leave Scotland dependant on English currency and therefore English economic policy. Or if they could get in the EU, dependant on the Euro and - effectively - Germany's economic policy. Look how well that's worked out for Spain, Portugal, Ireland and Greece.

The only way Scotland would be truly independent is if they had their own currency that was not pegged to someone else's. I've yet to see a credible theory that suggests how that could come about.

Bloody hell, just watched that
I think the twitter shortened version did her a favour or two.

It just shows how whatever your political or nationalistic bias is, can cloud your perception of said interview, as I've also just watched it and concluded that NS was honest and candid, as usual, and ably held her own, correcting some factual errors from the interviewer, without allowing herself to be forced into a corner!:ner:

Nothing or no-one is perfect, or gets everything right, including NS (or the SNP), but I'd still rather have her as PM, before blundering Boris, as aside from anything else, whether right or wrong, she always displays consummate integrity and sincerity, and for me that's important.

Plus, unlike the English here, as my nationality is Scottish (and Scotland is where I was born, although my ethnicity is Italian) I don't give a flying fuck about Westminster, or what's best for England.

What I care about is what's BEST for Scotland - and ultimately I believe that's independence (so that Scotland can make entirely its own decisions, retain ALL monies it generates, particularly from North Sea oil/gas, and so be in charge of its destiny), and with it, for its people, the end of centuries of unjust English colonial rule and oppression!

:exactly:

More on topic, what about the government's 'Tweeting' of the recent localised lockdowns? Just incredible....

Aside from the trivialising of such an important situation, by using social media to announce it, what if those in question living in that area didn't use Twitter? Jeez, the end of the world could've been announced on fucking Twitter, and I wouldn't have had a scooby-doo, as I don't go near it, ditto Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and the rest of such shite. Yes, the problem is that we're not bad enough to remove all hope, so it's still always a disappointment when we don't win it. Although without some poor refereeing decisions ('Hand of God' et al) who knows what could have happened?

Indeed, but life is full of 'what ifs'...:)

IMO, it would be far better for England to enter tournaments, playing down their chances of winning them (considering themselves instead as UNDERDOGS), and just taking one game at a time, which I'm sure is what the players and manager do (as anything else simply reeks of arrogance, and pisses off the non-English like you wouldn't believe, especially the Scots) - it's the bloody jingoistic English media and TV pundits (and some sections of the fans) that are the real problem!

Being English, and therefore an England fan, you won't really appreciate just how annoying that is to have to listen to, when you've got English TV pundits (often ex-players) predicting who England could meet in the quarter or semi-finals of the competition, after having only played ONE group game!!:wanker::punch:

Enthusiasm is fine, ARROGANCE isn't - and with England fans, frequently the balance is tipped in favour of the latter, which is why it rubs up everyone else (the non-English) who then want them to lose... Plus also because if they won, (like 1966), you'd never hear the end of it!!

Exactly my point. Plus, and so this is the key thing, WHY OH WHY then do they go into World Cups as one of the FAVOURITES, having only won the tournament once, some 54 years ago, plus (to my knowledge) have appeared in only one semi-final since!

It's bullshit. Fair enough if they had the track record in recent time to warrant that tag, and had recently reached numerous quarter and semi-finals, but they haven't. So how is their favourites status in World Cup tournaments remotely justified? Just because 'they're England'...?

And yes, the Scotland international team is also hampered by all the foreigners playing for Rangers and Celtic, and one of the reasons why we haven't qualified for a major tournament since 1998. However, we're a much smaller nation than England, with far less money supporting our game, and so I'd argue that in that respect, given their resources, England, since 1966, have underachieved at international level far more than Scotland.

Well I was being tongue in cheek of course, But seriously, no England fan cares whether a Frenchman or an Italian or whoever wants them to win - or lose. Why would they? They'd expect them to support their own national side and be elated or disappointed if that side won or lost. Once England are out I'm not bothered who wins it.

In what world cup have England ever gone in as a 'Favourite'. I can't recall us ever being a favourite with the bookmakers and that's surely the only definition that counts?

As above when have we ever been the favourite? Or even one of the favourites? France, Holland, Germany, Spain, Italy and Portugal are always the top picks, although the ranking does vary from tournament to tournament obviously. The usual narrative is that England are the 'plucky underdogs.' Which is also bollocks ofc.

EDIT - forgot the non-Europeans like Argentina, Brazil, Uraguay. They all get ranked higher than England too.

Not favourite, but ONE of the favourites. If you were to ask pretty much any person in the English media, journalist or TV pundit, who were, say, the top six favourites to win the World Cup, in any given year, England would be in that top six [I guarantee you] - and quite simply their record doesn't justify it.

Brazil, Argentina, Germany, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Belgium, Holland (among others), *factually*, based on their record in World Cups to date, are all ahead of England.

*That* is my point. Realistically, England have hee-haw chance of winning the World Cup anytime soon, so they should NOT be seen as being one of the favourites.

A pundit will say anything though. What counts is what the bookies think. And we're never even close to being a favourite with them.

And I'd never say never if I were you. Remember Leicester winning the EPL? I know a Leicester fan won ten grand on that betting at the start of the season. You'd have told him 'Don't waste your money!' ( I would've too tbh).

Yup, but league football is a *totally* different ball game (literally) to the international variety, as aside from anything else, teams are bolstered by the quality of top foreign players - and that makes a HUGE difference to your likelihood of winning things.

Plus, remember I said anytime SOON, and I stand by that, as foreigners will continue to flood the English domestic leagues for many years to come, which subsequently is likely to continue weakening the international side.

In terms of bookies, that doesn't detract from the point I've just made. The point is, as a Scot, having to listen to such biased nonsense from the media, during tournaments, especially English commentators during matches [chuntering on about England this, England that, when they're not even playing:doh:], is a major bugbear and spoils your enjoyment of the tournament.

For UK TV coverage, the channels should employ more Scots, Welsh and Irish commentators and pundits, which would then help even out the bias.

So don't watch the punditry. I usually switch over to the channel showing the match just before kick-off so I avoid all that.

And as far as fans go, the times I have watched matches in the pub the crowd have been highly critical of the team in general, the manager and certain players. Unfairly so, sometimes. There's certainly no uncritical adoration going on from the fans.

No, that's not the answer. That's a copout. The answer is to IMPROVE the quality of the punditry in the first place, and dilute English bias. After all, the whole of the UK isn't supporting England during World Cups, so commentators and pundits should always remember that.

I'm a MASSIVE and passionate football fan, so I love all the 'chat', before, during and after games - but I want to hear a bit less about England, and more about the other teams involved, when I tune in. Surely that's not too much to ask, unless the BBC is really the EBC?;)

That's were we differ as I think football is for watching or playing, not for talking about. Although I suppose I'm talking about it now.

I think the TV just gives the punters what they think the punters want. I'd guess if they come across as being negative about England they get a whole load of complaints from nutters. I think that has actually happened a couple of times. But those nutters are not the bulk of football/England fans. IME the bulk of fans are quite realistic about the team's chance of success.

Sorry, not even remotely so! You're obviously unaware of the reality because you don't bother listening to the 'chat'!;)

There's ALWAYS a media "fuss" over England, no matter where or when they're playing football, even in friendlies, which are televised live to a UK-wide audience - a luxury not afforded to Scotland, Wales or N.Ireland for their friendlies, and which instead are regional. The fact is, the coverage of sport (not just football) in the UK is heavily biased towards England, just like everything else, which is one of the many reasons why Scots want independence, to escape from such control!:ner:

And what about all the non-Italian people living in Italy? There must be a fair few. Don't they count?

Of course they do, but you're still missing the point. It's not about who was born or who comes from where, in terms of individuals; it's about catering for the needs of the NATION in question, as a WHOLE. In that respect, Italy is Italy, Germany is Germany, and France is France, etc.

However, Britain is NOT England. There are three other, equally important nations to consider, so the BRITISH (not English) broadcasting associations should accept that fact and make allowances for it, in order to ensure that their coverage of ALL sporting events, is carried out from a NEUTRAL and impartial perspective, not one biased towards England.

IMPARTIALITY is essentially the key point. The national broadcasters of ANY country, therefore (Italy or otherwise), have a duty to ensure that their TV coverage - of pretty much anything - is as impartial as possible, and that patently doesn't occur in the UK during the BBC's or ITV's national live coverage of World Cup football games.

Anyway, I think we should leave it there now, and just agree to disagree, otherwise we're in danger of creating a pointless circular argument, on a subject where, as a result of our respective nationalities, our views are largely incompatible.

If British medical scientists say it's okay then I'd be fine with it.

You don't know that you've had it already, either. That's a big leap of faith.

How do you know I haven't been tested?;)

See below: https://www.leaderlive.co.uk/news/18617991.hundreds-attend-wrexhams-two-mobile-coronavirus-testing-centres-first-day/

British scientists can be 'adversely influenced' by controlling authorities, for whatever dubious reasons, the same as anyone else. Blindly believing that they, or anyone representing them, automatically have your best interests at heart, is both gullible and naive, and not really like you.

If we're talking about 'leaps of faith' therefore, I'd say that the biggest one was simply 'accepting' that any vaccine introduced now was 100% safe (nothing else will do) without adequate proof of such, and by that I mean tested and approved by independent, impartial experts.

Marco.

Macca
11-08-2020, 12:31

Yes so do I. British independent impartial experts. Plenty of countries where they could cover up an unsafe vaccine, this is probably the least likely place where that could happen. Ultimately you're always playing the odds, so play the most favourable.

(If you'd been tested you would have said already. And in any case the tests are not 100% accurate).

Marco
11-08-2020, 12:42
Well, I'm glad we agree on the last bit! Between Del and I, we've had all the common symptoms, Del worse than me, so I'd be astonished if we hadn't had it.

And by the same token, neither would any vaccine introduced now, so quickly (when we've never before been successfully able to create a vaccine for a form of Coronavirus, including the last one SARS), likely be EFFECTIVE, even if it is deemed as 'safe'. So if 'playing against the odds', I'll trust the effectiveness of my God-given immune system!

So I wonder which strain of Covid-19 this vaccine has been designed to address - the one that first hit us, or what it's mutated into since?

Ohh, i am immune i have antibodies says the one being interviewed, so you have had a test, asks the interviewer, yes, came the reply, interviewer, ok, but haven’t we been told by the experts that any antibodies we might make naturally may only keep us safe for around three months, yes was the reply, Interviewer; ok, well when we actually get a vaccine, are we to expect a similar life time of immunisation as our own natural way of creating antibodies, yes, came the reply!
So my point is; What the hell good is a vaccine that only covers us for a three month period at a time!
Please someone correct me if my assumptions are wrong.

Well, I'm glad we agree on the last bit! Between Del and I, we've had all the common symptoms, Del worse than me, so I'd be astonished if we hadn't had it.

And by the same token, neither would any vaccine introduced now, so quickly (when we've never been successfully able to create a vaccine for any form of Coronavirus, including the last one SARS), likely be EFFECTIVE, even if it is deemed as 'safe'.

So I wonder which strain of Covid-19 this vaccine has been designed to address - the one that first hit us, or what it's mutated into since?

Marco.

Or neither really, maybe, if the real agenda was that the vaccine carries something else too ?!!? .......

Exactly! And if they tell you anything different, they're deluded, or lying simply to encourage you to have it. Like I said too, by now the virus will very likely have mutated into something else (a different strain), therefore vaccinating against the original one will be fruitless.

The reality is, we simply have to learn to live with this virus, and deal with it/take the necessary precautions, in the same way as any other mankind has faced, especially one (when properly controlled and managed) with a death rate arguably no higher than that of flu.

Under those circumstances therefore, IMO, any 'vaccine' that's been rushed through, in order to inoculate the population, simply stinks of an agenda.

Indeed, which makes me even more suspicious as to the real reason for wanting to give us anything!

And do you think that there haven't been any nasty side-effects from people having flu jabs, some of which might not have surfaced for years? The point being, there already *is* 'shit' inside the flu jab which, although may protect you to some degree from the flu, fatally damages your body in the process, I'd argue by adversely affecting your immune system.

That's why, some folk who are regularly jabbed with this that or the next thing, not just for the flu, and permanently on antibiotics, despite all that are never well!

Yourself mate, sadly being a case in point. I fundamentally believe that some of the stuff that's wrong with you is because of your body being pumped full of chemicals for years. I'd also say that Anthony comes into that category. The fact is that the side effects of some drugs are often worse than the ailments they were designed to cure!

For me, the less shit like that you take, the better for you it is. In my view, instead of drugs being the 'default solution' for treating various health conditions, we should be learning more about natural (plant based) remedies, and being better educated in terms of nutrition! But of course, that doesn't make any money for the big pharma companies, or the billionaires behind them....

I'm also not convinced that it's in the best interests of 'the powers that be' to have a healthy population, and if you believe that's the case (for good reason) then you can start to see why certain things are how they are.

Then, sadly Geoff, you obviously haven't paid attention to a word that's been said in relation to the highly potential 'dodgyness' of this whole thing.

And how would any (arguably ineffective) vaccine, for logical reasons stated, result in you not worrying in that way, other than having the comfort of a purely psychological/placebo effect? I.E 'I feel safe now, just because I've been vaccinated', even if *in reality* said vaccine doesn't do what it says on the tin.

In that [very possible] scenario, you'd be no safer outside, mingling with folk, than you are now. You cannot rely on drugs to provide a risk-free life, as there is no such thing.

Absolutely. Everything we need to keep us healthy is already here on the planet. God provided and gave man that knowledge.

BUT, it doesnt suit certain types to go down that road and educate us that way, as you've pointed out Marco and for many other reasons too.

If you speak to any of the elder Caribbeans in particular, my Mum included, they will tell how when they were young, no matter what ailment you had, stomach, headache, cut, wound etc there mums/grand parents would know the exact item/bush/herb/ leaf use or boil, prepare and give you.

My mum remembers her and her sister being given regular bitters for cleansing of the system and blood.

Who even still knows that stuf now, let alone in the west, the knowledge has been almost lost. Thankfully some of us still know it and cleanse, detox the system and utilise the good and beneficial herbs and spices available to us all.

How can you just eat and eat, pollute the system and never cleanse it ?? makes no sense. The build up poisons and all manner of toxins is not good for the system at all, hence it becomes diseased, sometimes leading to cancers, blood pressure, sugar diabetes and so on.

At least know the health benefits of the simple things available to you, Water, garlic, turmeric, onions, beetroot, ginger, fruits-vit C, Vit K2, D3, Green tea and other herbal drinks. Lemon, green leaf, super herbs like Spirulina and chlorella, and ALL berries, which have amazing health benefit.

Boosting your immune system is key ! and by doing so you are gaining far more good benefit to your general, overall health than any flu jab inoculation behavior

We need to be smart and educate our selves, high blood pressure aint no joke either. Cut down on the sugar, salt, drink lots of water at least, learn about the good things for the body and what to avoid, ie: fatty diet, artificial sweeteners which are basically carcinogenic but our so called great sugar free alternatives are loaded with them, same the colours (chemicals) in our foods.

Be smart and informed, then act on it for our own good. Trust no one but your own knowledge and wisdom. The more you know and learn, the harder and less likely that you will be just going along with things, willy nilly, to your detriment.

BTW - not trying to diss anyone's medication or be doctor. This is just a way to help and share n terms of general health being and maintenance :)

Despite over 50's now being considered "most at risk" it seems that 50 to 65 year olds will be at the back of the queue for the jab due to limited stocks and the logistics of getting the population lined up for an inoculation.

I am quite willing to have the flu jab (for Covid) even if it only reduces my risk of being put on a ventilator by 10 or 20%. Hearing more about the long term effects of this virus is quite frightening. Also, this winter is going to be pandemonium in A&E with people having the common cold or one of several other infections panicking and getting themselves off to the hospital, just in case.

Get stocked up with bog roll, tins of tomatoes, flour and bottles of spirits now :D

And so you haven't seen the problems and terrible side-effects that have been caused around the world by bad vaccines? And we certainly don't know for sure, whether this one, if it happens, will be good! And even 'good' vaccines can have side-effects, as I've just explained to Grant.

I don't let myself be influenced by scaremongering and rumours, let alone conspiracy theories.

Fair enough, but I think you should also guard against the effect of only believing what your belief system wants you to believe, and shunning *anything* else, rumour, scaremongering or 'conspiracy theory', which challenges that and takes you outside of your comfort zone;)

That's a BIG problem, IMO, for some folk who are staunchly anti 'conspiracy theories'........

Its quite common lately for folk to bring up the Small pox vaccine victory, but look a bit deeper and there is more evidence to prove that the desease was already on the way out before the Vaccine, so from what i have read, and the experts i have listened to, there really isnt much hard evidence that the vaccine alone was actualy responsible for its demise!

True Marco, marijuana has many benefits, but nothing smoked will be good for you in the long run. Things become toxic when burned, plus the tar and your lungs etc https://www.healtheuropa.eu/health-benefits-of-cannabis/92499/

I remember my Mum telling me many years ago. She was in Jamaica on a visit and she was feeling pretty rough.

She told me she slept like a baby that evening and when she woke up in the morning she had never felt better, fresh, alive and full of revived energy she said, which was an experience and memory that has stayed with her.

Sure, but it doesn't have to be smoked; it could be taken in tablet form. Plus, I'm not advocating that it should be used all the time, in a recreational sense, as too much of *anything* is bad for you; simply that it could be consumed solely for pain relief, as an alternative to paracetamol.

It was strange, but every morning after a few beers I had an "upset stomach".
I thought that as I am getting older, perhaps I had developed a gluten intolerance or something similar. So I stopped drinking beer for a while only to discover that when I cycled over to a nearby village and had a couple of pints there was no problem. Went back to my local pub and problem started again, even tried their lager and it affected me.
Only when I talked about it with a couple of regulars did I find out that they all had the same experience (dirty lines, so draught and keg were all affected) but put up with it

100% agree. However, it's not just about their own fears; it's primarily about their resentment over you *seemingly* not complying with the rules and 'getting away' with something that they think you shouldn't!

It's like those fuckers (self-appointed traffic cops) who sit for miles doing 70mph on the fast lane of a motorway, when the two inside lanes could've been used instead, and you're behind them wanting to overtake, who resolutely refuse to SHIFT, no matter how much you flash your lights or blast your horn, so the only course of action is to undertake them, then give them the 'wanker sign'!:steam:

I mean who the fuck do they think they are? It could be an emergency; they've no idea WHY you're in a hurry, but that doesn't stop the fuckers from attempting to FORCE you into doing what THEY think you should be doing instead!

And it's exactly the same with the self-appointed mask police. I'd line all those cunts up against a wall and shoot them. Can't stand that mentality!!

Here's my message to them: MIND YOUR OWN FUCKING BUSINESS AND GET A LIFE, YA SAD FUCKS!

yeah precisely, Masks don't help really..unless it's an air fed mask totally sealing your head from outside interference...everything goes straight through the masks in use anyway..I suppose a little bit of defence, if someone coughs directly beside you, but the airbourne droplets are that microscopic, they just get sucked straight through the masks..

It's the other way around I think, the mask will restrict how far the droplets spread. So if someone is right next to you it will make no difference but if they are at a distance then it will reduce the chance of droplets reaching you.

The legal requirement is for a face covering, not a mask, so anything will do whether it is in any way effective or not. I use one of these gaiters https://www.military1st.co.uk/k14012-03-pentagon-fleece-neck-gaiter-coyote.html

Just wear it round the neck, pull it up over the nose when you enter the shop. Washable, serves other purposes and you don't look like a complete dick walking about in a surgical type mask.

When I've been in England, I've noticed staff in shops, bars and restaurants wearing face coverings, but thankfully here in Wales there is no such mandatory requirement, as the Welsh minister is a) a logical and eminently sensible chap, and b) guided by more clued-up scientific advisers!;)

The idea is that a face covering help prevent others from infection by asymptomatic carriers. That is the covering helps others from infection from you; and so by reciprocation if others are wearing a face covering, they are helping to prevent you becoming infected by them.

It may only be palliative but it helps to improve confidence.

There's no requirement in England for shop staff to wear masks, only for customers.

I've seen people alone in cars, driving along, wearing a mask. What's that all about? Or walking on their own down an empty street with a mask on. Very strange.

According to the studies I've read a proper mask, fitted correctly will decrease risk by about three percent. The things you see most people wearing will do nothing. Like putting a sieve on your head to keep the rain off. As you say it's all about increasing confidence and getting that herd immunity going.

If the neighbours in the car with you then it may help slightly, and a little more if he wears one too. But alone in the car there is zero risk.

Doesn't stop most of them doing it though, out of some largely misguided notion that it will give customers more confidence to patronise their premises!

Yeah maybe if you're old and vulnerable, but having been out and about recently, dining and drinking in pubs and restaurants, I can tell you that the vast majority of people under 60 don't give a shit - and quite rightly - are just getting on with their lives!

Been like that round here for months. Seen a few oldies walking about with their masks on, and a few youngsters who are pretty obviously foreign students. But as you say the indigenous personnel under 50 are not in the slightest bit bothered.

Does make me wonder about the contagion factor. If it really was as contagious as they reckon pretty much everyone round here would have it by now as hardly anyone takes any precautions at all, whereas tested cases are less than 1% of the population.

There are some people who if they were ordered to jump of a cliff would just go and do it - check out the Milgram Experiment https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milgram_experiment but I think they are a tiny minority in this country. Most British people are not keen on being given orders much less obeying them, whether they make sense or not.

Exactly the same here, mate! Pretty much everything we're interested in has been back to (near) normal now for months... No idea really why now any fit and healthy person would be 'scared' of going about his or her business as normal, as the local situation allows, especially if you're living in an area well away from any spikes.

I've been saying that for months. It's largely been blown all out of proportion, for rather dubious and questionable reasons! This virus *is*, albeit slowly, on its WAY OUT of the UK, and so I confidently predict that this time next year, it'll be a case of 'Covid what?', which of course makes the mania in some quarters for supplying an 'urgent vaccine', questionable to say the least...

Even if there is a 'second wave', we've learned so much now with the first one, how better to deal with it if/when it comes, there will be nowhere near the deaths and overall panic there was before, as the whole situation would be much better managed from the ground up. Therefore, the reality is we just have to continue taking sensible precautions and learn to live with this virus, the same as any other, until it naturally peters out and/or becomes much less of a grossly unwanted pest in our lives!

What we've got to do though, is not allow the authorities (and worse, the media) to continue exaggerating the severity of the situation, simply to create sensationalistic news and/or enforce unjustified controls and restrictions upon our freedoms, which could only ever be justified if things got MASSIVELY worse, and I simply don't see that happening, if we continue doing the right things to manage and control the spread of the virus.

Yeah, I know... You wonder why God bothered giving the twats a brain!

I also agree about the stubborn bloodymindedness of most British people, which in some ways is not the best thing, but in others, in terms of repelling over-zealous authoritarianism, can prove rather fruitful!;)

Last Saturday Anita's youngest son, 25, (who doesn't live with us) came visiting, stayed overnight, used our trimmers for his hair and beard, and the next day we drove him 20 miles back to his flat. Twice, because upon arriving at his address he discovered he'd left his keys at our house. Moron.

Monday evening he called us to say that during a hospital visit over some such bollocks he was tested and found to be positive. He provided names of his flat mates and others he had been in contact with. But did not mention us. Just as well - if I'd been forced to self-isolate for 2 weeks I would have battered him into next week. Anyway, Anita goes online and books tests for us and her other son who lives with us.

So Tuesday morning at opening time (8am) there we are getting tested. And by 7pm we all had our results. All negative :carrot: That was a quick turnaround. But it did make me wonder about the contagiousness of this, what with sharing our car for nearly two hours, me using our clippers shortly after he did his covid-beard with them, and his mum getting a goodbye kiss. It's a mystery!

Marco
23-08-2020, 08:40
As I've said all along, the tests aren't accurate enough and create lots of false positives, and also some false negatives! Here in the UK, the virus is at the stage now when it needs to be treated in the same way as flu, without the 'hysteria circus' that continues to surround it for no longer any logical or justified reason.

Marco.

Macca
23-08-2020, 08:47
I read that the tests can give up to 30% false positive results. Not seen any proper figures to back that up but if true it means a lot less people have died from it than has been claimed.

It could be that a lot more people have natural immunity than has been thought.

The problem is they just don't know enough about it yet. So erring on the safe side with regards to precautions still does make sense. There's no doubt that a handful of young and healthy people have died from it after contracting a large dose. That doesn't happen with 'flu.

Marco
23-08-2020, 09:10
No I know. I'm not saying that this virus isn't *potentially* deadlier than flu (there are simply too many unknown variables though to form any concrete conclusions in that respect), simply that, at the stage things are at now, certainly in our country, and given what we've learned to date (which is quite a lot actually), it doesn't deserve the incessant 'fear circus' that surrounds it, mostly perpetrated by the media.

I also agree with your point about the flaky reliability of tests, and likely how that's impacted on the death rate figures, which kind of backs up what I'm saying.

This theory makes sense, but i prefer to go with Macca's idea, as the test was a shitty and inconvenient experience. Experts generally agree that any variability in PCR results is most often attributed to human error, not the tests. “The confusion over the PCR tests has been because of sample collection,” Schacker said. “You get into some goofy stuff if you’re doing a nasopharyngeal swab and you don’t collect it correctly. There may not be virus there when the person might actually be infected or if you use the wrong kind of swab, you can screw up the result.” False negatives can arise when swabs don’t go deep enough or collect enough material or a test is taken too soon or too late. The first nasal swab Gilmore was given was administered by a health-care provider who swabbed for only a few seconds and the second by a doctor who counted to ten out loud. Researchers don’t yet know the degree to which human error may be whittling down accuracy, but at least one early study suggested PCR accuracy may range from 66 percent to 88 percent in the real world.
