Peerless tweeter too, B139 by the way.

Probably based on the Chris Rogers PRO9-T.
That's not a Peerless tweeter - it's the Audax HD12x9D25 favoured by so many box stuffers in days gone by.

Vintage ADC 10E Mk.II cartridge from the late sixties. Pretty rare and very nice sounding. Needs a lowish mass arm. A proper classic! I have two.

In case anyone fancies a properly high end direct drive linear tracker, a nice example of the Pioneer PL-L1000’s bigger brother, the Japan-only PL-L1, is up for grabs in Germany.

I use my PC for most of my audio, has an old, but good Sandblaster 5.1 card in it. The attenuator will be used (sometimes) between the Soundblaster and a power amp, could be Radford STA25 III, Quad 405-2, Quad 303 etc. etc.

simon g
24-11-2018, 17:14
The 200 is CD Transport only, so no DAC, and thus his title is incorrect. Massively over priced. Description also reads like its from someone who heard from someone else, some while ago, that Meridian gear was great. A bargepole would be Pacifically sized too short to even think about touching this.

To be fair his main picture does not include the DAC but a subsequent picture shows a DAC 263.

Still expensive tough. There was a similar set up sold early this month for just north of £200 but did not include the control unit.

Sorry.

I hope you haven’t now convinced her it’s worth a packet. £50 on gumtree for a broken one is about right and most tuners are worth peanuts these days. If it’s a £50 repair then great, if it’s a £200 one she’ll need to work hard to find a buyer interested in one of these to get her money back. The fact it’s on gumtree suggests it won’t be going on eBay with decent pics and a proper sales pitch, and will be exposed to a limited market. Could be tough.

Personally I wouldn’t thank you for one. Modern stuff outclasses it on every level for less cash. There was a reason for the valve revival in the 90s - most of these Japanese solid state AB, high feedback, function-loaded integrated amps were robust enough but a total snooze fest. Main reason for high-ish values compared to a few years back (IMO) is the the younger generation think this old silver crap from before they were born looks cool in a retro living room.

I just do not see how anyone can look at that auction and not know that the seller is a lying arsewipe. Any twat with a smartphone can see what a working pair goes for. stands to reason you'd plug them in somewhere to test them.

Gary was right in offering the advice - the last two (UK based) working Pioneer SA9100 amps sold on ebay for £360 and £385 .... hardly 'peanuts'. The £360 sale attracted 35 bids - so clearly a market for them.

But yes, a lot depends on how much a repair would be ... but even at a cost of £200 for repair she would still be quids in if the cosmetics are good .... certainly worth more than the £50 asked on Gumtree (with the tuner thrown in) - even if not working.

You ignore my main point: gumtree isn’t eBay - usually crap listings and mainly local reach - and for that reason alone this is highly unlikely to make anywhere near top dollar.

What I can’t fathom are who are the idiots paying this sort of money for so-so sounding old junk?

I presume you have heard the amp in question - or do you just brush all Japanese gear into the same skip?

When the kids were small - 20 years ago - put my proper kit away in the loft for about 5-6 years. I lived near Weston Super Mare at the time and frequented a place called Weston Hifi Exchange.

There I was astonished to find all sorts of kit I’d read about when I first got into hifi (at school in the late 70s, hey-day of the hifi mags), or lusted after in mates’ big brothers’ setups. I got through a lot of ‘renowned’ kit - as was anyway - prices generally from £25, seldom more than£75 - you really couldn’t give this stuff away in the mid 90s. Most of it sounded either shit or (at best) tolerable. I was a skint new dad so I didn’t bother what the setup looked like.

A lot of it went in trade in as I cycled round the gear, some of it did indeed eventually wind up in the skip. I don’t recall this specific pioneer but £400 will get you pretty close to, say, a Quad 34/306 combo that I guarantee will piss all over it.

As for the seller magically transforming herself from selling what she regarded as old junk for £50 on gumtree, to turning out a knowledgeable quality listing capable of getting top dollar on eBay (minus the 10% listing fees/4% PayPal fees don’t forget) ... well I’m not holding my breath on that one.

My concern was that putting an expectation of a big return in this woman’s head wasn’t necessarily a great idea, when it’s going to be hard for her to achieve anything like that amount.

mikmas

You need to look at the two sales listings I mentioned - admittedly one does a better job than the other in describing the amp but in both cases the photos are mediocre to utter shite in quality terms and most definitely a long way off from 'quality listings'. The worse photos belong to the sale that went for £385 ... the seller shouldn't be left alone in charge of a camera

Clearly the amp in question (quite a hefty beast in you check up on hifiengine) has garnered a stellar reputation somewhere in god's sweet pastures.

The SA-9100 is Pioneer's finest professional stereo integrated amplifier.

It features an all stage direct coupled pure complementary OCL circuit, resulting in a super wide bandwidth and distortion free power, a unique 3 stage direct coupled equaliser, twin stepped tone controls for making critical bass and treble adjustments and level set volume and loudness contour controls to adjust listening preference.

Other features include 2-way tape duplicating and monitoring, 2 position high and low filters and 3 pairs of speaker output terminals.

So what you are saying is that it has the fairly typical over-complicated (generally feedback based) tone and volume controls of a high end amp of the period, an approach that is generally given as one of the main reasons why kit of the era usually sounds a bit rubbish?

Once repairs are paid for, packaging sourced fees paid, hardly worth the hassle

Think I'd rather have the £50 in my hand via Gumtree than ALL the hassle eBay can lead to if having to post an amp and HOPE that it arrives undamaged, then there's the unscrupulous buyers who claim faults etc.

Once repairs are paid for, packaging sourced fees paid, hardly worth the hassle

Precisely ... doubly so if the seller knows absolutely nothing about hifi.

Let one of the many bottom feeders take the pain of getting it repaired and finding a mug to offload it to at an inflated price.
.
No favour was done here putting expectations of £££ in the woman's head.

I simply suggested she checks sold prices on Ebay and consider getting it repaired and re-advertise it.

I got my Marantz CD63KI by contacting the seller (lovely elderly gent) and telling him it was worth a lot more than the £30 he was asking for it (he didn't know KI was different to SE) he was so grateful for my honesty he sold it to me for £95.

Even if she didn't get it repaired and sold it 'as is' for spares or repair (with no returns), I'm betting she would do alright. The 'matching' (and working) tuner that she also has is also worth listing as a separate but concurrent item - last two in UK listings sold for £120 and £80. She can list them 'Collect only' which is essentially no different than Gumtree and no hassle with postage. Either way, much more than the original £50 ask.

The choice is indeed hers to do with as she pleases ... but she didn't have that knowledge before so I applaud your action (and the other you describe)

Pulling out a tweeter dome can usually be done within a minute or so. I use a small amount of tape (e.g. gorilla tape) carefully placed within the perimeter of the dome and easing it gently. It will pop out without risk of pulling the dome off totally.

Cabs are non-factory it looks like to me, and therefore more or less worthless I'd have thought. Not sure what the drive units are may even be mismatched. Certainly had the cones done at different times.

To be fair there's a lot more goes into making these than meets the eye. When I went to shrink wrap college, I only got 2 years into the six year course and had to drop out as it was too gruelling. And that isn't just any old clingfilm either, it's Saran wrap!

Let themselves down by miss spelling "cord" though, makes it all look a bit iffy.

Barry
02-02-2019, 18:34
Jeez - they look awful (Saran wrap or not)!

Are they worth the money? Well a lot of work goes into them, and the conductors are claimed to be 7N silver. Most commercially available silver wire is only 3N (or 4N at best), so refining it to 7N purity will be expensive. Cold welding the conductors to the connectors make sense, but to do the job properly you have to have the correctly sized crimping tools, otherwise the crimp will not be reliable and will fail with time. Platinum plating the connecting surfaces make sense from a cosmetic point of view, but is of doubtful advantage electrically.

What is this obsession with the mechanical damping of cables? All cables are soft, flexible and compliant, not stiff and rigid; so how are these vibrations transmitted?

But as I said they look awful and I wouldn't pay £15 for one, let alone £15,000, no matter how good they sound. Are those testimonials genuine?

Collectible ? Bit of overpriced junk that’s been hanging around at that price for a while. It’s certainly mono era, not even sure that’s a proper 301.

The work required to get an acceptable sound from that would be considerable. Of course there is a ‘collector’ mindset that might be interested but ... nine grand ?
