Is anybody likely to part with that much money on something like this.

I wonder how much the constituent components cost?

You can't 'add' depth, transparency, speed, or anything else useful that I can think of just by bunging something in line with a lead as far as I'm aware.

At around the time Lulu made that, I would have been listening to Jefferson Airplane and Captain Beefheart and the like.

As the Lulu tracks were recorded in late 63 to early 64 and Airplane and Beefheart broke in Europe in 67, tell me Geoff did you get the DeLorean on fleabay? Seriously, I still have my copies of Surrealistc Pillow and Safe as Milk, which I bought new back in the day and it's artist I heard and saw as a kid, going to places like the Roundhouse the 100 Club, the Marqee and the Speakeasy, ghat shaped my musical tastes. But Lulu was turned onto music and R&B back in Glasgow by Alex Harvey, she jammed the blues with Maggie Bell and influenced Bowie. Pre the record company making her commercial, she was bloody awesome.

Perhaps its the TT's then, I've mounted P7e/P8e's on my old Ariston RD80/Basic LVX and on the Rega P25 and it's always noticeable. just a gentle tap on the lid sounds like an explosion :D Still lovely carts though..

You need a low mass arm for that AKG. The 'LVX aint one.. The 'P8e' is a very high compliant cart of around 35x it would suit my arm to a 'T' :eyebrows:

The AKG P8ES works well in an SME 3009 (either 'Improved' or the Mk.II version, and either fixed headshell or detatchable headshell). IMO it is one of the best cartridge for rock music, though it was designed with classical music in mind.

GH228 Mk1. Re-wired, boxed I've seen them sell for £250. Then again, unboxed, not re-wired and sold as an auction... £70 - 85 !

That's the difference between a normal sale and the top dollar, well presented "I look like a dealer" Buy-It-Nows !

No bearings other than a sharp point and easy to re-wire, I'd take the latter-priced ones and do it myself.

Cheers Sam. wasn't sure if it was that or the export version tbh. not knowing much about them apart from them being good arms. It was on a tt and had a cart on too. Think it will be slightly overpriced then unless its been rewired or the cart is really good.....not that I need a deck tbh. Might look out for one or a mission though as a change

Gosh! Most I've ever seen.. I think? £3500. Perhaps I've seen similar a long time ago at hight of madness which I thought was over.

I guess they are the most original Rogers Gold badge versions and one of the first 251 pairs made.. err, assuming they aren't like Trigger's old broom ("I've had this broom for 25 years.. 9 replacement handles and 12 new sets of bristles").

Yep & certain two in our own town & the city only have new edition paperback on the shelves, they won't stock in old 60's paperback editions cos they look old & maybe think people don't want them. So wrong they are but if they want the shop to look like W.H Smiths fine, but i feel these charity shops are loosing it.

Another thing: This is how a charity shop works. People give unwanted items to the shop, they sell them to make money for said charity. Why do they have people on guard at the door with a charity box scrounging for money? again this is not how it works.

Cheers Sam. wasn't sure if it was that or the export version tbh. not knowing much about them apart from them being good arms. It was on a tt and had a cart on too. Think it will be slightly overpriced then unless its been rewired or the cart is really good.....not that I need a deck tbh. Might look out for one or a mission though as a change

Wasn't too bad a deal with the Thorens TD160 and the Ultimo cart for it's BIN, perhaps not a massive bargain but ok.

One I went into the other day had a big sign pointing towards their Ebay store! Summed it up the way it's going (yet surely THEN they will again want the cassettes?). I guess can't blame them for wanting to get the most money but then may as well shut up shop and just run a normal business and hand the money to charity instead of profit or shareholders? They kind of can't make up their minds as to what their purpose is ...

Not a bad cover actually, for criminals too.. drop off a bulging bin liner full of loot or money to be "cleaned" and no suspicion, just a couple of old ladies chatting about their ailments.

Here's a rarity. LNB Para-Lab-Super speakers. They are a compact transmission line design and use a 6.5" bass unit (Goodmans maybe) with a KEF T27 tweeter. Years ago I was given an extensive demo of these by the designer and maker and was surprised how good they were.

£10,000 Techy

The seller says: " I am open to sensible offers on these and set the starting price high to gauge interest - I am not expecting to get the starting price for these"

His plan worked and has people on at least one forum discussing them and giving more publicity than just the ebay listing alone would normally achieve. Now just needs one person to get in contact to view and make a deal outside of ebay.. so that aspect has worked ok.

Still, DIY generally sells at a loss - I'd give him no more than £100 over the price of a second hand Mk3D and bet he spent much more than that on them.

The Mk3D series also have unique detailing in that the brand and model label is printed in a single line instead of two, a detail retained when making these turntables.

....but you repainted them and put it on yourself! I could put the same "detailing" on a thorens too and it wouldn't be any less original than the recreated detailing on these! duh!

50/1 is maybe a tad excessive for the 25 I think but I bet they sound very good. actually you could likely do away with a phono stage all together as it would output about 2 volts:lol:

Yeh, me too, and I think your right re the cart. be interesting to see if it gets picked up

Barry
14-05-2015, 08:37
The nominal output from the MC25FL is 0.5mV. A 50:1 SUT will boost this to 25mV, which on high level passages could possibly overload the phono input of your preamp.

Furthermore, the 50:1 turns ratio will transform the nominal 47K Ohm of your phono input down to 18.8 Ohms, which is too low a loading for the cartridge. Most MC cartridges like to see an impedance of > 100 Ohm.

Actually you could likely do away with a phono stage all together as it would output about 2 volts

No, you still need the phono stage to provide the necessary RIAA equalisation.

Not sure about his modifications, I remember there was a comment on his work on the Quad Spot.

I had a discussion with him a few years ago and did not really agree with some of his suggestions, however, he very kindly offered to exchange a damaged Quad 303 heatsink that I have, for an undamaged one of his. He was not worried that the fins of mine were broken / bent as his amps were built into speakers.

I didn't take him up on the kind offer though.

Concord IV was one of the first ‘two and a half way’ designs – two 8” bass drivers being operated vertically in line at low frequencies. This arrangement improves power handling and reduces distortion at low frequencies. The response of the lower unit is progressively reduced as the frequency rises so that only the upper unit is radiating in the crossover region. By this means it is possible to retain the advantage of twin drivers at the low end of the range without the phase interference effects usually associated with multiple drive units.

No Bev, not good...... F*#<ing stunning. One of the best small, "modern" Tannoys. When I ran and used the world famous Tin Pan Alley Studios, these were the main monitors in Studio 1, in two years I recorded and mixed 7 indie charting albums on a pair of those. My buddy Steve who worked with me at the time, still has a pair in the control room at Liscome Park studios as a "real world speaker". You may have guessed I love them.

Strange that they sounded that bad, I have never heard this model, but all the units are quite good. They would have had to do something wrong with the crossover to make a really bad speaker. KEF B200's are still worth a few quid. You will probably sell them on ebay.

On second thoughts, that Peerless tweeter can be off colour for several reasons, that would make a bad sounding speaker.

I've only owned one pair of MS speakers, the MS400's, 13" x 8" EMI + large Peerless soft dome (some were fitted with KEF T15) and Coles 4001G supertweeter, these were pretty good sounding, though I think they would have benefited from a slightly larger enclosure.

Watch out for shrunk surrounds on the extremes of the large axis of the EMI elliptical bass unit.

My friend has done a very effective repair of these on several units.

Thanks Paul. So better than the 800's ? can you tell me what size the drivers are.. I'm guessing 12"...and are those cabinets suitable for the driver? Thanks again for your help ;)

The LRMs use a higher resonance version of the driver in my Cheviot II speakers. The LRM has the corrugated hard edge surrounds and the Cheviot II has foam roll surrounds. Otherwise the drivers are to all intents and purposes similar. The bass is more extended with the Cheviot II due to the lower driver resonance and larger cabinet. The overall tonal character is very similar though. These are the best sounding 12" pepperpot Tannoy dual concentric units I've used. Better than the Monitor Gold 12" and HPD 315 models I've had.

As for the System 800 in comparison? They are very different, but just about as good in my opinion. The scale is smaller and the top is marginally smoother I feel, but the SRM/Cheviot II have more mid transparency and a touch more vitality about them (and obviously more 'wallop').

More Tannoys!

A pair of Tannoy Eatons in Welwyn Garden City at a fair price and open to offers. I love these little monitors (had five pairs), they use the HPD 295A alnico pepperpot driver that has non rotting rubber surrounds and seem to last forever. Basically a ten inch version of the 12" Monitor Gold really. Very sweet sounding and surprisingly punchy. Highly recommended as an intro into 'real' Tannoys.

Nuts! A pair of Tannoy DC3000 at a monstrous £580 asking price. They're just not that good. Same driver line up as the smaller DC2000 in bigger boxes. The pick of the bunch (from the plastic coned models) is the compact DC1000 which is more coherent and can be bought at around £100.

wasn't Rare Bird (Andre) looking for one to complement his pre/power setup ??

Needs a PCB Speed Control box - but the mate-labs MagicQuartz would work really well with this baby (only 100 euros )

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xMXbXu__S6U

Description
In 1970 this turntable cost as much in the UK as a Garrard 401 and a Thorens TD-124 put together. It's a very nicely made turntable, apparently the first ever Servo Controlled deck and it has an impressive bearing and a whopping great DC motor. There is a problem with the power supply though - the speed wasn't remaining consistent and after running for half an hour or so the resistors started to get quite hot and there was some fine white smoke coming out. Hence the "For Parts Or Not Working" category. Cosmetically it's really nice. That plinth isn't really doing it any favours and as it's cut for an SME 3012 I will not be including it unless you're prepared to collect it. I've also got a place on lid but, as I say it's not of the greatest quality.

Probably. I don't know how he'd know that though. There were three of us who assembled them so without seeing the writing on the box I couldn't say if it was one of mine or not but, being one of the first batch of 100, it probably is.

Looks like it's had a bit of bodgery, and I find it hard to believe that Johnny was responsible! The on-off switch is a non-original item that must have needed some surgery to fit, the feet are a bit odd and the arm mounting and wiring look decidedly hit and miss (what's with that p-clip srewed on the back?) but basically it looks pretty sound. Given an afternoon's fettling it'd be as good as new.

Not at all sure about that red mat....
