Certainly different.
Possibly some great Tannoys hiding in plain sight. But may well have been overdriven by Pete Watts. Proceed with caution .... :eyebrows:

Which model of Tannoy are they?
No idea Barry. All I know is what you see. Geoff may well recognise the cab - assuming it is one supplied by Tannoy and not a custom jobie.

Agreed. There were a few Lancasters with 12in Golds in but most had 15in.
Lancaster cabs are pretty poor for the 15in Gold.

Well, at least one gets a free AT cartridge, possibly a very cheap one!
Looks in good condition, some of the lettering silver finish has worn off near the on-off control, as is quite common.

Lovely pair of cast chassis EMI elliptical bass/mid drivers. Looks like the selling price may be sensible. These are capable of very good sounds and can be used without a midrange driver and just a tweeter as the response extends cleanly to over 3kHz. Ignore the slight ripples in the vinyl cone surrounds, that's normal and was often present in new ones.

Yes, v nice units EMI 14A770C. I have a pair in some large home made cabinets, along with 5" midrange, Celestion HF1300 and Coles 4001G

Just noticed, coincidentally? the same seller has a pair of KEF T27's for sale.

Funnily enougth I tried to find a couple of spares for easy cartridge swapping a couple of years ago.
I've not looked since but at the time they were like Hen's teeth. there was some dude in Germany doing plastic copies but even they were £15 a pop.
I seriously do not understand how an ADC or any other common Jap. TT SME Type headshell is worth £40+ I just don't see where the value is.
Just spotted this on ebay. Vinyl Record drying Stand (https://ebay.us/Zlh7WQ), for just over a fiver. Just what I need at the moment, just to let the LP dry off that last little bit before putting them into new sleeves.

Got this in an email from eBay today ... seems I wasn't the only one confused by recent announcements:
"From 4 March, if you send an item via a tracked service and you want to be covered under the eBay Money Back Guarantee, you will need to upload the tracking information in the designated tracking field before your item’s estimated delivery date. It’s important that you do this so eBay can protect you if a buyer claims they haven’t received your item. The eBay Money Back Guarantee cannot cover you if you send the tracking number to the buyer via email.
These changes are only relevant to you if you send items via a tracked service. They do not apply when sending items through other shipping methods."
(emphasis added)

I don't see that as a big deal. It makes sense to show the tracking info if you have it.
I don't see that as a big deal. It makes sense to show the tracking info if you have it.
Me neither, but that wasn't the issue - ebay's initial announcement was interpreted as applying to ALL sales - i.e. that all posted items should be sent as tracked.
This email clarifies it.

I don't see that as a big deal. It makes sense to show the tracking info if you have it.
You'd think so wouldn't you, but if you uploaded the Info on sending and the delivered information was updated late because Buyer was out, couldn't be arsed to pick it up from the local dead letter and other similar reasons, then the seller was given automatic defects on their account.
For this reason a lot of sellers only uploaded when forced to by a "not received" case.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/183698389621?ul_noapp=trueIn their favour, they're not the constructor series versions. I'm not sure there were any speakers that used that combination though, the B110 was usually matched with the T27. Didn't the T15 dig further down into the mid range and would often be matched with just a B139 (with mixed results)?

I still have the original type Celeste, not my favourite speaker, perhaps that's being kind.

I think we should admire such a minimalist approach. Less is more, after all. The preamp best exemplifies this philosophy, and the careful cable twisting shows a zen master at work. Think Jiro and Sushi. While the boards sat at such jaunty angles I'm sure are the result of careful considerations of Feng Shui.
No expense spared either, I'm sure the wiring is genuine copper

One of the coils has gone on my original bought back in the day. The 100 was / is said to be the better sounding of the 3 in the range.

More loony pricing from Hart Audio.
What looks like an i8 Tannoy driver (or derivative), matched to a few quid's worth of Chinese ABR's in a box. I don't see the £14k+ asking price there in value.

I paid £30 for mine, complete with magnetic bias compensator and the (very) rare adaptor for Mk. V and VI cartridges . The item listed does have an aftermarket non-Decca lift/lower arm, which adds some value, but nowhere near enough to justify the asking price.
I've seen Mk.I ffss arms complete with a Decca Mk.II cartridge and mounted on a Thorens 124 armboard going for the same amount.

Maybe fifteen years ago, I sold a pair of FFSS arms and three Mk.I heads for around fifteen quid on ebay. There was no interest in them back then. Things have changed.
Around 1980, I bought a beautiful sounding 4RC for a fiver. I used it for years! :)

The 4RC is one of the pre Mk.V/VI Deccas that I have not heard. I do have an SC4E that I could modify with the RC network, but it's not something that is high on my "things to do" list.

They may have been 'seconds' stock. Tannoy used to be a bit naughty with using components and drive units from very varied batches. Serial numbers for supposed matched driver pairs were often way apart.

Hi
I'm the one who built this amp back in '84/'85 and offered it for sale originally at the Lenco Heaven Forum.
In my original sales blurb over there I included this line:
"6) Be aware as the amp is at this time, high voltages are exposed so this would not be suitable for use in a room with children present unless a suitable cover were made and used with it."
I offered it for sale at a forum where many of its members are familiar with Valve Amplifier hazards and I would not have offered it for sale on Ebay without fashioning a suitable safety cover for it.
I just had to point that out.
What happens to the amplifier now doesn't concern me but I will say it does/did sound very nice.
Best wishes
Tony

Went and had a look at them, all look original but pretty tatty covers and cabs. Spoke to the guy who’d tested them but hard to ascertain if all the drivers are working as his criteria was ‘music came out of them’. What’s the going rate for a pair of these in fairly unknown condition, £100-125?

Unless the cabs are actually broken in a substantial way they probably will come up nicely with a bit of TLC. The grill cloth of course can be renewed easily. Without testing each driver individually one can't be 100% certain each are ok but given that 'music came out of them' that is a reasonable good sign. I personally would take a chance up to say £75 given that 'good' condition early concertos go for anything between £100 to £250 (so far as I can see). This allows for not a big loss if drivers are broken and a recap if drivers are fine. Possible upside is that all drivers working just great, no recap is needed and all that is needed is TLC on the cabs and new cloth. Even then the existing cloth could well be cleaned up and re-stretched.
Of course 'plan b' in the event things are mostly rubbish is to sell any working drivers and other bits individually. This may well raise more than the cost of winning the auction - but of course hassle doing several sales.
Did the guy you spoke with say you could buy them there and then?

You're probably around the right value. A mint set of late ones would be worth £200 to £300.
The Concerto is one of the classic bargains, they competed with big Tannoys and Ditton 66's at the time and were in no way inferior, just different. The bass quality is excellent and the mid/top is similar to the LS3/5a monitor. Grab 'em now, it won't be long before the prices go silly!
The grille cloths look the way they do because the Declon foam backing/padding has long since fallen apart allowing them to sag. Just wash the fabric, stretch it back into shape and staple into place with new padding and it's sorted. The woodwork is easy to re-polish.
if you can get them for 30/50 then worth the risk

Wouldn't let me buy them, got to wait for the ebay auction to finish. There was a little pile of black dust on the bottom lip of the cabinets, I'm guessing that's the backing of the fabric which has disintegrated? The drivers all looked in ok condition and the screws holding them in weren't in any way damaged so I suspect they are the original drivers. Might be worth a punt I'll wait and see how the price goes. Never heard Concertos so would love to have a listen to these.

Yes, that's what it is.
The speakers look basically OK, so I'd say they're worth a bid up to maybe £150. Bear in mind that the popular larger three way Brit speakers of the time were the Goodmans Magnum K2 and the Wharfedale Dovedale III, which now fetch £100 to £200 and were nowhere near as good as the KEFs.

Oh well. Win some, lose some. You could always be cheeky and go back to BHF and say you will buy them for £xx if the buyer does not turn up. So often people bid on things and then have second thoughts, particularly if it is collection only.

Great! More listings should look like this. And it's had a couple of bids, so maybe honesty is the best policy. Although the manufacturer seems to make a good living doing the opposite. Has anyone ever heard Russ and vfm spoken in the same sentence?

Suspect all it's likely to be is a VDR (voltage dependant resistor), possibly in parallel with a spark supressor (which in turn is a series resistor-capacitor network: say 100R + 0.1uF). https://www.illinoiscapacitor.com/pdf/Papers/spark_suppression.pdf

It always amazes me that anyone buys anything from companies such as this. This is from a limited liability company established less than a year ago. Address is clearly an accommodation/registered office. It's listed as 'with warranty'. Oh yes? Who from? Certainly not from the UK Distributor and certainly not McIntosh directly. No idea from the listing where these amps actually are, if they exist at all. Would anyone seriously drop £20K for these from these company? If they do, then the old adage of fools and money is certainly still alive!

The height of my dad's listening (at least at the height of my embarrassed-adolescent phase) was a tape of Shep's Banjo Boys in his Ford Capri ... claimed to be a jazz lover but didn't like 'that modern stuff' basically anything conceptually after about 1928 ... of course the British trad jazz revival was what he grew up into.

Apart from the Linn Index. Notable for its flat, two dimensional and uninvolving sound. In fact, you could pair them with an Audiolab 8000a amp and produce a new standard for dullness.
Which could possibly be partly countered by employing QED Silver Anniversary speaker leads (god, what a horrible thought).

Which could possibly be partly countered by employing QED Silver Anniversary speaker leads (god, what a horrible thought).Strange how we all hear differently, I quite liked the Index, had a pair for a while, used them on stands away from wall though, admittedly low on bass but the midrange was very sweet.
I had the Linn Index with the matching stands. Paired with a NAD amp they were truly the most boring things I have ever heard. Heybrook HB2 to the rescue if I remember correctly! They looked great though.

There is for me something just lovely about so much of the older kit, this amp and also the RtoR on another thread.
It seems as though there was so much conviction and effort gone into them compared with now, a bit parallel to a record deck compared with a CD player, the latter being comparatively bland, soulless, even insipid.
It is hard to argue that Hi-Fi has not moved on technically and in sound quality, and this raises questions about how we choose Hi-Fi, perhaps with our eyes and not with our ears.
That is a cracking looking amp. I have to agree Dennis, I don’t think sound quality has moved on at all in the last 40 years. Perhaps in the uber expensive high end but those are waters I don’t fish in.

Perhaps they should have called it the Linn 'Krap'. :D
I remember the Linn Barbarik speakers and the Klump power amps that went with them 😁 not forgetting the Wankharder pre amp.
Nice looking KEF Corellis. Only pickup in Glasgow.

Actually I think they would fit in beautifully in your dining room and you know Mrs W has been hassling you to sort out some sounds there. :ner:

She has indeed, I tried to steer her away from an all in one, WiFi robot horrid speaker, towards a nice pair of 15'' Tannoy HPDs in washing machine sized cabs....
the old gonads are still aching from the swift, but rather brutal kick! :donk:

As far as I'm concerned, any Royd's that cost more than a nicker are pricey! :D
What? You would actually pay for them?!
You’d have to pay me to take any Royds and, even then, the only thing I’d do with them is throw them into the first skip I saw!

Different tweeters :)
I chatted with the seller this morning and offered to pick them up as I will be driving near him tomorrow. He wants to let the auction to run. :)
Apparently he has lots of other stuff to sell.
Someone's turned the crossover boards around and one tweeter has been replaced. Probably all sortable.

This is nuts. They've now been bid up to £837!! What's so special about this pair?
The new Tannoy Legacy range have driven the price of all the old stuff up.
The cost of an equivalent new pair is the reason why the second hand stuff are at this level.

Oh dear - they do look a bit unloved. Anyone who buys them will need to have them serviced. However if all the dust is vacuumed up and the speakers allowed to aclimatise to a warmer room, then they could well work again without any problem.

The question mark allows for all contingencies.
Just like at the end of 'Flash Gordon.'
The question mark allows for all contingencies.
As originator of this thread, I chose the title with care. The question mark was deliberate and intentional - permitting sarcasm for over priced items, as well as enquiring if anyone here had actually snapped up a bargain.
Possibly a bargain (?)

Designed by Robin Marshall, it looks almost exactly the same as Monitor Audio's R352, which came out in the eighties and which later had an MD (metal dome) variant. I loved mine (not metal dome version), very sweet unfatiguing sound, and can be had for a LOT less than the £200 asked here.

Lentek S5 speakers...these will be wonderful...though stating 150watts is a bit on the ambitious side...more like 100watts..with the SP1054 drivers...

Oh these Lentex speakers rang a bell so I looked at my old emails. Sure enough the guy selling these has been trying for ages. Originally he wanted over £400 for them. Speakers are in a storage facility of some sort so difficult to test. The main picture he has is a stock picture not the actual item.
main pic looks like a poster. kef main driver by looks of it.

Presumably relocated inside.
Ports blocked off. Non-original tweeters, they are similar but have fabric domes by the look of them. Rear terminals replaced with nasty cheapos.
