Those Corellis suffer from some of the worst Bextrene 'quack' that I have ever heard - I had an immaculate pair years ago and had to get rid - there is NO WAY they have anything to do with LS3/5 a midrange - the midrange quack dictates they are a no no. If anyone else advises you otherwise, I suggest you run away - people who recommend these speakers are either a) living in the past b) have hearing problems c) living in a dream world or d) need their ears syringing.

Yet, more abrasive and confrontational behaviour (as per the warning I gave you on another thread). Ok, you're on a week's holiday!

Marco.

Those Wharfdale woofers look good to me Geoff.

They are not woofers Dennis, but full range dual cone with doped cloth surrounds. Rather nice.

Those would be the Wharfedale CS10/DD.

My first speakers used a Wharfedale RS8/DD - an 8" unit with mechanical crossover (the DD: dual diaphragm) and a (rubber) roll surround suspension. Built them into a Wharfedale design 1.2cu ft distributed rear port enclosure, back in 1969. Handed them over to my father when I bought my Quads (around 1974). They were working well up until the end of 2000, when I sold them after my father died. Hopefully the rubber roll surrounds have not perished, but I have no idea of their longevity; presumably longer than the foam surrounds that Wharfedale also used.

Too late - I already got them (£12.50) and have just got a full set of caps (~£30). Let's hope either the speakers are actually good or if not hopefully I qualify on one or more of the afflictions you mention. :)

I have two pairs of Corellis, nice bass, good top, but to my ears there is a bit of Bextrene quack in the midrange, it is tamed much better than in the Chorale that uses almost identical units. The LS3/5a midrange is superior to both.

Ahh, The Wharfedale super 8's these where the first speakers I remember hearing as a kid, my dad had one in the factory built cabinet, and one in a cab he built himself, [couldnt afford both ready built ones at the time] on the end of a little Heathkit 3 watt single ended amp [Which I still have a version of somewhere] that system always sounded good to me as a kid. :)

Yes, quite rare, especially as audiophiles had a tendency to buy them for the TD-124, often throwing the rest away! They did another version, which was supposedly the 'official' UK version, based around an Acoustical 3100 motor unit. I have one and it's rather good.

Oh I like that!

Is it an idler?

I do fancy picking up one of the early B&O machines, I have an SP1 cartridge (with, incredibly, a NOS stylus picked up in France in original packing) which sounds great, it's up there with the Shure M3D in my book as a great, beefy early stereo cartridge. I quite fancy one of the early small footprint B&O TTs for the study.

If your SP1 has the universal 1/2" fixing, you won't be able to use it in the B&O arm.

I know that, and the tip angle of the SP1 and SP2 (which doesn't have the mount, but fits the tonearm) is different to the later cartridges as well, but the aesthetic and indeed the performance has put me in the mood for one of the B&O turntables of the era.

Agree about the elegant aesthetics of the B&O 3000 series. I have a B&O 1700 tuner (with the 'slide rule' cursors of the 3000 electronics) as well as an SP6 cartridge. The tuner is very good, but the cartridge is IMO out-classed by contemporaries such as the ADC 25 and 10E.

If you want a turntable to go with an SP2 cartridge, then you need a Beogram 42VF as this has the right arm to match its tracking angle.

I should have bid on the DC1000 that the chap re-advertised: - it was getting to North/West Wales easily that held me back.

The original bidder won them at £50 (presuming that guy checked his map too late and wished he hadn't) and the second attempt the seller got over £60 for them.
I understand they are reasonably well regarded and for that money, quite a steal, if not up there with the likes of the Cheviots/Eatons.

Looks like a possible fun project. How would one go about obtaining other bits (mid and hf drivers, crossover and cab designs)?

You'd have to do some research, but the info is out there. Crossover calculators can be found online, like this: http://www.speakerwizard.co.uk/1st-and-2nd-order-crossover-calculator-and-response-simulator/

One possible candidate for a system using the Corals might be the SEAS H-087 unit with the 1.5 inch soft dome, as used in Dynaco and some Goodmans speakers. They are usually 4 ohm and crop up on ebay quite often. Like this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Seas-H-087-1-Dome-Tweeter/302597404854?hash=item467435f8b6:g:mZoAAOSwQiFaVgV i

The Corals have quite an extended range for a biggish driver and the SEAS tweeter can be used from 2kHz upwards, so there's potential there. You'd need to check driver sensitivities, I have a feeling they'd be about the same. It doesn't matter if the tweeter has higher sensitivity than the bass driver, that can be compensated for.

And yes, you can use a 4 ohm tweeter with an 8 ohm bass driver.

At a guess, something like a ported forty to fifty litre cabinet may suit the Corals. That's about the size I used (half a lifetime ago).

A nostalgia trip. It's already in cloud cuckoo land territory at £2k. Have people really forgotten how unmusical this late 70s/early 80s solid state kit was? - pursuit of ever higher power and ever more vanishingly low distortion figures, all the while forgetting what it's all about.

I'll grant you it'll look cool on a shelf.

Maybe it’s just me, but I would steer clear of any amp that uses electronic switches for inputs instead of relays or good old mechanical switches.

Had a Denon PMA-777 that was full of those things and they were noisy and unreliable.

Kef must have sold masses of these lovely speakers. This pair is in the 30k serial number range. Mine are much earlier - in the 3k serial number range.

Anyway watching. Why? Well why not.

Always interesting to see what other items a seller has. Seems very ambitious for his '"Now that is what I call music!" CDs. I remember dumping many of these in the skip that somehow my daughters' seem to have collected over the years.

They sold for £322.80, which is probably twice what they'd have fetched five years ago, so even the plastic coned 'pepperpots' are on the way up. Just as well maybe, they've been rather maligned, as they sound pretty decent.

One hope's for a lottery win this week.

They were under forty quid new if I recall. I've had a couple of pairs come my way for some reason. Anybody expecting to enjoy MC's properly will be missing out using these, they're simply not very good.

I can never understand why DM2's and DM2a's go so cheap. They must be the most underrated true classic British speakers.

Even the far less able DM4 fetches near twice as much these days.

Agreed, I had four pairs of DM2 / DM2a at one time.

They are pretty good as is, but I reckon replacing the DM2 bass unit with a Dalesford would make them even better.

I think the main problem with the DM2 is the weight, hernia inducing!

Nice. The G88 turntable is a goodie! The amp is a valve Cadet III and should sound pleasant enough. I'd be interested to know what's in the speakers, at a guess maybe Wharfedale Super RSDD 10 full rangers?

You've all got it wrong - they are a special edition ..... because they are "Tannot" speakers. Worth every penny

I bet he is about 25 years old and couldn't have possibly bought them in the 70s.

Sent it back as it had a bent cantilever, few days later it appeared on PFM or on here I can't remember, I asked him if it was same one, no reply, it sold again, then appeared back on eBay as the PFM/AoS buyer no doubt rejected it, it then sold again on eBay and I then lost track of it so perhaps the 3rd buyer kept it?

In none of the adverts was it mentioned that it was bent and the photos were carefully angled to not show the bend.

Rare seventies Japanese made KLH Model 55 receiver. Ignore the 120 watts nonsense, that's the power consumption. It's around 12 watts per channel really. These are reputed to sound rather nice. Build quality should be very good. More than a passing resemblance to the Harman Kardon receivers of the time. Looks like it could be a bargain!

Nor did I. Wasn't really into tape. Had a couple of Sony's come my way, but didn't keep them.

I wasn't into tape then but did use friend's Akai 4000D and Tandberg 3000 machines. I thought the Tandberg was superior to the Akai.

A Ferrograph 632 two-track machine was acquired in the late '70s, which I did use to record off the radio, but when I discovered I could make equally good recordings on a Sony cassette machine more conveniently, the Ferrograph was 'retired'. I even got rid of a Revox G36 (bought from a work colleague for £25) and a Brenell tape deck, for which I was going to build my own electronics. Still have the Ferrograph but the idler wheels have perished and need replacing. I now use a Nagra IV-S to occasionally play back those tapes made on the Ferrrograph.

Oh dear :(

I have built a cable or two myself and these are better than I could ever make for sure, so they are worth more than £15 to me.

I'm listening to Chris Issac at the moment and the sound is stunning, very open and musical. Noticing a big improvement in the soundstage as well, so the Ecosse cable will be homeless soon.
