He does say make an offer!! .99p? Might not be that bad I suppose. Has anyone here actually heard one?

Wouldn't mind that too much (although would take a bodyguard
.... but shouting at potential buyers CASH ON COLLECTION ONLY - NO EXCEPTIONS and then needlessly repeating it 10 times without even having the decency to post clear and properly oriented pictures would not persuade me to part with even a fraction of that money - bargain or no bargain
It's less than an hour's drive from me but quite frankly I've met enough grumpy disrespectful farts to last me a lifetime....

Mike you may well be right..... However for anyone that can turn up and listen to the amp and meet the person, to check out both!, this amp is still a bargain...
Like you, I like to buy from 'nice' people but sometimes eBay listings do not do justice to some people. It might be that the seller is actually a very nice chap but has no idea how to properly list on eBay
If anyone is near to the seller and bothers to visit and check him out, and his amp for sale, I am quite sure someone will be getting a complete bargain...
£890 or 'offer' is a steal for a late model Oto... believe me I own one...;)

Dont say which colour of rondo it is but looks like the cheaper red. Maybe a tad overpriced for my liking but they are good decks and can understand you fancying it Paul. Would go well with your kit. I liked that big Sony that was for sale in Edinburgh, but couldnt justify 2 decks

Good question. I doubt I would go beyond £50 but some might. In any case, no decision has to be made for a week. There are eight days to go and the bidding history should indicate how it might go. I'm now watching it as well so we will look later in the week.

Box. I suspect you are the only one here who looks for Sony speakers. It's just not a name that is naturally associated with serious loudspeakers in audio circles. That's not to say there's anything wrong with them though.

Can't advise you Box. I know nothing about them. All I can say, is it's not where I'd be looking for speakers.
I don't know what Sony speakers sell for new, but my feeling is that depreciation will be enormous. That of course may make them an attractive buy second hand. For some.
at 35 quid you can hardly go wrong.

Usually these days, you'd expect to pay £250 to £350 for a decent one. However, the way vintage stuff has been going silly on prices lately, I would not like to predict the way bidding goes on this.

I had the chance to hear a Sugden amp once.
It was warm and muddy.
Can't advise you Box. I know nothing about them. All I can say, is it's not where I'd be looking for speakers.
I don't know what Sony speakers sell for new, but my feeling is that depreciation will be enormous. That of course may make them an attractive buy second hand. For some.
I am 'borrowing' the Sony SS3's at the moment and I am just listening to the music.
She will want them back eventually though.
They are and you can watch that price rocket. I reckon they may fetch something around a grand.
They're in excellent nick - but the Belling and Lee 'aerial' sockets will puzzle some people!

Bugger! These things always come up at the wrong time. This one is on my list. I have the pre and tuner and have always wanted to complete the set. Can't justify spending as much as this will go for.

Box. I suspect you are the only one here who looks for Sony speakers. It's just not a name that is naturally associated with serious loudspeakers in audio circles. That's not to say there's anything wrong with them though.
Sony made some crackers. My APM20ES speakers are very capable and I hear that their big brothers (22s) are even better. As with many things, Japanese makers suffered from the British is best brigade. There are good things from all over as well as bad.

I agree. How boring would it be if we all had some variation of QUAD, Tannoy or Harbeth? Sometimes it is worth skiing off piste a bit.

Must have been set up with the wrong partnering gear. "Muddy" is the last thing Sugdens could be accused of. They are lucid, smooth and clean.

The system it was in was a Linn Sondeck with basic arm and cartridge. The Sugden was feeding a pair of K.E.F. Codas ( the original ones with the two tone paper baffle). It may have been the cartridge, I have never heard a Linn cartridge I have liked.

Absolutely. If the amp has a similar signature to the pre, it's clear as a bell.

Guy's talking through his hat...
The Tannoy 637 speaker enclosure is completely sealed for optimised sound output and has rear blow ports for venting. contradictory and wrong in the latter... it has no blow holes.

think thats a nominal figure as is the 250watt P to P figure. wouldnt advise anyone trying it.. if his has "blow holes" on back then it must have been home adjusted  waste of a good speaker.....he's not posting so doubt he will get a good price. thats why im gonna make boxes

I was referring to the acoustic output. Not the power handling. They, by mistake of course, imply it is 150 watts.
One acoustic watt from a speaker is equal to around 108db @ 1m!

I have other amps, but the SM-70 Pro sounds unbelievably good on the end of my TVC pre-amp, driving the big Tannoys. Rich, clean, transparent, pure Class A. Lovely! Plenty of grip and punch too. If you got that sort of sound quality for £5000, you wouldn't complain.

Hi,
Looking for something cheap to tide me over since I've sold my gyrodec. Would this fit the bill or better wait and buy after my holidays, would be looking at spending around £500-£1000 second hand one I get back mid September, although funds would depend on my wife returning to work ;)
I have a Goldring 1012gx spare - would that fit/suit the Walker/Linn Basik?

Would do more than tide you over I suspect.
Upgradeable very easily too with something like a Jelco 750-D (which is Linn fitting so should bolt right on) or an outboard PSU (Heed or somesuch). Cartridge will bolt straight on the headshell of that Linn arm and decent compliance match.

Seems good. Nag MP11 in there as well which is a nice cart. I remember the basic as being a good arm so it should be fine with the Goldring.

They look like they've been home reconed with gold cones, quite a bit of edge plasticiser liberally slopped about, but the edge terminating cord looking too starved.
Red cones are still available from Lockwood as far as I know, costing £500ish. Reconing is pretty easy on Tannoys. On the plus side, those hammerited baskets are the real deal, not the 'gold' reds that seem to crop up so often on ebay, and these 'proper' reds are pretty well silvers with dustcaps. Not a bargain though...probably about a third too much.

Chartwell LS3/5A "not bad condition" - £50 (http://www.gumtree.com/p/speakers/chartwell-ls3-5-speakers/1127409081)
Yes, £50, there are no zeros missing.
The ad was 17 minutes old when I saw it, pure luck I thought. Recompense for my earlier failure to receive some similar Chartwell speakers I'd bought for silly (£25) money but "on the way to the courier they were smashed" (they were on eBay 2 weeks later). I'd just like to have some to see what the fuss is about, no dollar signs in my eyes, honest guv. But, unsurprisingly, someone was "on their way to see them". I informed the seller that his speakers were worth considerably more than his asking price, even without seeing them. Judging by sales I've seen on eBay he could add a zero and they'd be snapped up.
I spend ages looking at ads, I've only seen something like this twice in my life.

I don't if this will help, but in advanced, next to the search button, you can scroll down and put in search parameters like location etc.

not on ebay and hopefully this isn't breaking any rules but on AVforums there is someone selling a Thorens TD150 mk 2 with SME 3009 arm for £200 which I thought cheap given how much the arms seem to sell for. I've no connection with the seller.

Re:- the speakers Shane - why'd anyone have a reserve? Why not just start at the price you want?!
Re:- the speakers Shane - why'd anyone have a reserve? Why not just start at the price you want?!
Because it is an auction.
If the seller stated the price he wanted, it would probably be so high buyers could be put off and no-one would bid. If, on the other hand, there is no BIN (Buy it now) price, bidding will start and could well end up reaching a figure in excess of what the seller was hoping to get. The reserve means the item does not get sold for too low a figure - just as is done in conventional auctions.
One for the tech-heads:)

Just to update you Martin and others, The albums arrived from Lintone today, well packed and undamaged. Of the 40, 5 were Classics for Pleasure and went straight into my charity shop pile. Of the other 35 thiese where mainly mint to mint minus. I have lots of Liszt, Ravell, Puccini many of which are classic DECCAs, there are also many good DGs, EMIs, RCA Read seals and 3 CBS Masterworks series records. I have a Callas version of Tosca and many many others. All this for 11.50 plus postage, which works out 0.61p per record. Even the 5 tat ones are mint. Absolute ruddy bargain, well worth the punt :)

Thanks Bev, having gone through the lot, I would think to buy these from a second hand classical specialist would cost around £200-250. Some of the DECCAs I've seen online for £10-15 as tey are quite rare. I'm off on Friday, so it will be classic spinning time :)

S.
As to whether you can blame Jah Shaka specifically or not, I don't know, but there are some of us who are old enough to remember the Ska/Reggae scene of the sixties. The home sound system of choice for the Jamaican immigrants, was the Blaupunkt radiogram, the best of which were fitted with a Garrard 4HF. Many of these in turn, made their way to the fledgling UK sound systems of the day. In 68/69 I went to the wedding of Earl Luke, who later went on to own WEM Reecords (World Enterprise Music). The sound system, Count Rose - From the North had been brought over to play the wedding and they had 2 4HFs and a wall of 15" JBLs. The argument goes that if you want the authentic sound of Ska, then playback on a Garrard 4HF is essential, though a lot of sound systems used 301s and even LAB 80s.

Just another example of daft French prices. You should trawl French eBay. Some of the second hand prices are unreal. An old tuner that might reach £5 if you are lucky over in the UK would start at €35 here. I've sold a couple of Sony bits and I doubled what I paid for the nine bits of a whole system.
The French seem to see value where the UK would bin it.

nice
I've heard Rega DACS. I've not heard one that compares to the Theta.
I was very happy with the DS Pro Progeny until I moved to a Monarchy Audio M22B and even then there was little between them really.
Well, I put in what I thought was a lowball offer, and it was accepted! Hoping to get it next week. Bargain!
I'm hoping that this will be an upgrade on my Cambridge Audio Azur DACmagic.

Ooh. Well done! It was a bargain even at the offered price. I've seen them sell for over £400.
I'm confident it will wipe the floor with your DACmagic.
Do let us know how you get on with it.
Thanks. I'm feeling a bit pleased with myself. I'll reveal the final price once money has been exchanged and I have it in my hands on Monday evening. Looking forward to hearing it.

Opinions on this old amp!!
There is one up for sale at a tempting price out here and looks in reasonable nick. Still has the spare fuses on the back. I have heard both good and bad about it so what do you reckon? Any good?
I doubt it will give the Stereo 20 much to fear but another piece of history on the Steadman shelves would do no harm.
I had one for years, gave it to Dan The Man who has had it working recently. No real power but very sweet and open. I think you would like it.

I had a Delta 30 briefly, which I believe is largely similar apart from the cosmetics. I wasn't keen personally.
I was using a Rotel RA-611 as my main amp at the time and it was way better.
Still cheap enough this with a day to go... would fancy this myself

I had the 611 too and have been looking out for one.. The Leak would only be for yet another bedroom spare and looking at and, as it's starting at about £20, provided it doesn't go any higher, I thought it might be worth a punt. Mondial Relay is so cheap out here that the postage adds hardly anything to the price. I have three or four days to cogitate, so I will.
Thanks Macca for your input too.

It was Leak's first foray into SS amplification. The circuit was a shameless plagiarisation of the Jack Dinsdale design. Dinsdale received no acknowledgement, and was threatened with litigation by Harold Leak should he 'cause waves'.
It won't cause your Leak Stereo 20 to fear, since the Stereo 20 is the much superior amp!

I wouldn't touch them. Look at the top and bottom plate thickness. They'll be flexing in use. Nasty!

I don't like the look of them to be honest..
I think, like always really, you get what you pay for
I have some Partington Super Dreadnought stands and they are very well made with heavy top and bottom plates.. For about £80 more I think they represent good value too
