They are the Pro version which are more expensive. I'm not sure what the differences are beyond better power handling though.

There are billions of those speakers about so you can always get a cheaper deal somewhere.
I have some as the rears on my A/V set up. Not the pro version, though but as I say I don't think there is much/any difference beyond the power handling.

I had an original pair from the '80s, made by JBL in the USA, then later in Taiwan.
That was the only model availalable then.

Later a cheaper ( Chinese built ) version was sold, originally for £39.99 by Richer Sounds.
Originally in black but later only in silver.
The prof. market ( served by Studiospares, etc. ) brought out the 'Pro' version,
differentiate it from the cheaper version.

The cabinet is now used by other makers for speakers similar to the Control 1.

With a modest bit of foam damping behind the drivers and some BAF resonance damping in the horn throat exit they could be very interesting. My inclination would be to experiment with super tweeters too.

Hmm, personally I think Supertweeters are venturing into Snake Oil & Fairy dust territory.... :sofa::But I agree on the damping,

I had some Lowther Acousta and did the same: sold the Lowther drivers and fitted full-range Audax drivers, although not the same drivers as in that auction, these had the whizzer cone. 103dB! - I sold them to a DJ mate who used them as his PA and gigged them all over the country. He said quite a few folk complemented him on the sound :)

And they might be helpful with the drivers in the Lowther cabinets as the top is likely to be rolling off around 12 kHz or so.

The Acoustas would have had Lowther drive units in originally. But it's just a folded horn box and substituting other drivers is not unheard of. At least these are likely to be less forward than the originals (probably PM6 units).

The Lowthers may have suffered surround rot as some other units do, so replaced with something cheaper.

A 1960's Hi Fi News design was called the Paraline. Very good too, the recommended unit was the cheap Elac 8N148 / 8N185, or, the quite expensive Lowther PM6.

I could only afford the Elac at the time.

If you come across it, would be interested to see again, might even get my friend to make some cabinets, the Elac 8" would be a bit rare these days.

Originally, my two Paralines were driven off a homemade 1 Watt transistor amplifier, pretty loud on that too.

I think that it it, I have kept most of my speakers over the many years. At the moment playing the Beatles are BBC Rogers LS3/6 fitted with the Rogers Export Monitor bass units. This really makes them early Rogers Export Monitors.

It's a shame that most people want the Rogers/Spendor/Chartwell etc version of the LS 3/5a's as they are all pretty old now and may well need some work but my Sterling version is the very last production for LS 3/5a's but nobody wants them.... I'm sure that the Sterlings are very good, I bought my Chartwells for £90 decades ago from a friend when that was the going rate. He bought them new, they have not been abused. Crossovers in LS3/5a are unlikely to have drifted unless abused, no electrolytic capacitors in them. My clones and the Chartwells sound very similar.

Class D amps should not be underestimated. Some sound very good.

No equalisation was used, output from an old Soundblaster 5.1 PC card directly to the £10 or so TPA3116 amp. There may have been a very very slight lift of the high end treble caused by the output filter caps of the 3116 being more suitable for 8 Ohm nominal speakers. The LS3/5a are supposed to be 15 Ohm nominal.

It is very cool isn't it? But he is asking too much. NS10s are about £300 used. And the subwoofers are not rare as he claims they are. They aren't that great, either.

There could be a profit there for someone who can be arsed, provided the final price doesn't go too high

Really Grant? Interesting - that you say that. I was always under the impression that the QS series were victims of cost cutting and therefor not in the same league as ES - having said that, I have never heard QS stereo gear - I have a QS AV receiver, and did find it more musical than my second from TOTR Denon AVR. I predicted these great arms would get focused on by vinyl enthusiasts eventually, after not being on the radar for a good while. They are seriously good sounding and work with any type of cartridge. Prices will keep rising.

Keep an eye on the Lenco and Decca stuff too. That's rocketing.

Good job I've stocked up on just about everything I'm likely to want (might get another certain power amp though, before people latch onto how good they are ;)).

I think I've seen this one for sale before. A couple of years ago you'd have likely got one for £100. I reckon this could go for £400 to £500, might be a fraction less as it's collect only.

I paid £25 for mine, but it was years ago.

Townshend 600C pre-amp, not attracting much interest yet. Only £79 in bids so far and less than a day to go. A 'no brainer' if you can get it for around £100.

not a bargain but I couldn't resist posting this as I was bought one for passing my 11 plus way back when. We used to use it in the car on long journeys just sat on my knees, listening to things like Slade Alive and Sheer Heart attack. Sound was probably awful and I dare say it didn't do the records much good but it entertained me and my 2 brothers.

As I said, value is relative, if you factor in rarity, they may be worth that to a very serious collector. These were no designed for MGs or HPDs for that matter, Ronnie designed these for that specific driver and they were the best they could make at that time. Ronnie was a great designer and I had the privilege of discussing speaker and horn design with him on a number of occassions, these were really his swansong with the company. Would I drop that kind of cash on them if I won the lotto? No way, but as I said, like your mother in law, it's all relative

Absolutely, and each to his or her own... However, for me, hi-fi equipment is judged SOLEY on its audio performance and reliability. Rarity or 'collectibility' simply doesn't come into it. Therefore, if I could find a pair of Tannoys that sounded just as good as those, or better, for a fraction of the price, then that's what I'd buy.

For me, it's all about achieving maximum SPPV, as the equipment itself is simply a means to an end [a necessary tool], not the end itself - and so I don't collect hi-fi equipment for its rarity value, in the way I would with the antique furniture and crockery we enjoy collecting for our period home :)

The PS-X75 doesn't have track finding ability. He pressed one button to lift the arm and then the second to move it inwards. The deck has two buttons for arm movement so you never need to go to the effort of actually having to move it by hand! The arm moves as long as the button is held down.

Nice deck.

They look very nice. Not sure about the Coles tweeters sounding better than the original HF2000 units though. I've used both many times and the Celestion is far sweeter and smoother. It would not be a straight swap in the IMFs as the impedances are different.

RGRFs are pretty good as far as they go - I owned a pair for about 5 years and had lots of pleasure out of them - but my guess is it would be pretty much impossible, regardless of crossover or driver, to design out the fundamental flaw of the GRF design which is a mid bass hump, followed by rapid dropoff below about 70hz. This was accentuated when you put an HPD in compared to a MG. I'm sure with these drivers and whatever crossover tweaks were done, they sounded quite nice but a normal pair of modern Canterburys should boot these into touch pretty effortlessly.

I know where you're coming from, but trust me, forget what the reviewers say. UK reviewers are often biased against Jap gear. I've heard that combination in a friend's system (one I know intimately well), and it sounded stunning. You know I'm not easily impressed. It's also much better made than is often suggested.

Sonically, however, it's certainly worth the money being asked, and IMO would comfortably compete with anything being made today at that price, and perhaps beyond.

Not imo. I think it's priced very fairly. It was Kenwood/Trio's flagship integrated of the mid 70's. Superb build quality and a very fine sounding amp. Moreover, they're pretty hard to find in this country. How much would an equivalent Pioneer or Sansui go for? At Subjective Audio until the mid 1980s I sold at least six pairs of these. I never had a failure and never had them traded in for something 'better'.

No, the designer Mike Stephenson did not develop them with valve amps as the seller claimed. Mike used a Meridian 101b/105 amp combination. His reference point were the Meridian M1 actives. He voiced his designs to as closely reflect the sound of those.

I agree. £400 seems about right. Nearly everything from that Trio (Kenwood outside the UK to avoid confusion with the kitchen equipment company) is worth considering, e3specially the FM tuners. Many of the then Trio design team eventually migrated to Accuphase.

I'd not bother Grant. The EMI 350 unit was not brilliant (not as bad as the 450 though). Dirt cheap in its day. The cabinets I'd estimate are the same sort of size as the IMF Super Compact.

Marco.

Not the worst by any means Marco but the idea they do a proper job at all frequencies from 20hz to 20khz is bananas ... I did have a play with full range drivers years ago and yea they are fun, but regardless of cabinet used they are always prone to distortion and break-up somewhere or other and not in a good way ....

I know Axioms are very different beasts to tannoys and will attract a different sort of buyer but still - £850 - think what you could have instead!

They were pretty good. But not worth anything like that much. Good examples are getting scarcer, but if I was after a pair I'd expect to pay the usual (these days) £400 (ish) value. Twenty five years ago, they'd have been worth £30.

Agreed, but it was mainly the tweeter on the 350 that was not quite up to scratch. The 13"x8" in the 350 was not bad. The 450 had two even nastier tweeters and a bass unit with a much smaller magnet. However, for the low cost, both 350 and 450 were pretty good value in the day.

Changing the tweeter in the 350 might make a much better speaker. Strangely, the EMI paper coned tweeter before the 350 one was way better.

I know what you're saying. The 350 had the decent enough main cone and surround, as used on other better drivers, but was unfortunately stuck with an inadequate little magnet. The tweeter lacked the pretty effective vinyl cone surround on the better units. The vinyl surround EMI tweeters were quite good, but not as good as the contemporary little Goodmans tweeter with similar vinyl surrounds and an alnico magnet and a nice felted paper cone. I remember experimenting with these tweeters and was very impressed by the Goodmans units.

spendorman
26-01-2016, 00:16
I would not regard the 350 magnet as being really small, 500gm ? as against the largest (pretty big) magnet 13"x8" with a 700gm? magnet. I put in question marks as this is from memory from many years ago. The 450 certainly has a small magnet, but the 150 had the smallest magnet of all the 13" x 8"s.

The EMI paper cone tweeter that sounded best to me were the early ones that had Alnico magnets.

The proper Baker full range units like the 'Superb' for instance, had rather short lived foam surrounds, so I guess many went in the skip (even though they were easy to fix). Why not have a look at the vintage Wharfedale drivers, they were nice and many had doped cloth surrounds that last.
