Vintage KEF Coda speakers bid to £35 so far. Watch the price rocket once the LS3/5a 'wannabes' clock these and want them for parts.

I've had a few pairs of these and didn't like them. The sound was pretty coarse and crude.

Half decent looking pair of KEF Concerto speakers. May go cheap? I like these, a good beefy sound with nice mid & top and plenty of detail. More enjoyable in my opinion than the Cadenza and Reference 104.

Understanding ebay HiFi terminology

rare------ because most of them got slung in a skip for being shite

British made------ from cheap Chinese bits

untested------ you know as well as I do that it's shagged

tidy------ not quite as chewed up as the other bits I'm selling here

intergrated------ I can't spell

hi end------ was more than forty quid new

upgraded------ I've been fucking about with it

stunning------ I'm prone to exaggeration

Hi-Fi------ it makes a noise

requires minor attention------ parts no longer avaiable

genuine original------ outdated

celebrity owned------ so I'm asking a grand more than it's worth

single speaker------ where's the other one then?

bargain------ but dearer than the other dozen on offer

virtually unused------ nobody can figure out how it works

job lot------ I do house clearance

amazing------ pretty average

sort after------ I can't spell and don't know what I'm talking about

retro------ it has imitation wood on it

pre owned------ he's probably a used car dealer

amplifire------ I still can't spell

vintage------ old and knackered

you will not find better------ oh yes I will

Maybe, but asking £650 for a pair of Goodmans Maxims is ludicrous (see his other items). There was a time when you couldn't even give the damn things away. They are not very good anyway.

Same here. It is in reserve these days but when I bought it I had every intention of buying the 'hallowed' NAD3020. After listening to several amps I felt the Technics SU-V303 sounded better than the NAD (it did to me anyhow). The only rubbishy bit about it are the speaker cable 'clamps' which wreck the cable ends.
Nice retro looking system although the colours are a bit of a miss-match.

spendorman
24-05-2017, 06:43
Yes, the speaker cable clamps would be better if they were ordinary binding posts, however, if cable is not too thick, they work OK. I generally use 6 amp lighting flex, no problem with that.

I'd expect them to, Alan. Listening to the FB-Monos today gave me goosebumps. I was thinking more along the lines of a comparison rather than a replacement. The monarchy have a Valve in too which I thought would be good to compare against. The monarchy were nearly £2k per block when new.

Recently sold a Townshend 4 tier stand to a chappie in surrey, within a few weeks someone was selling the exact same
item from china ( Max must have put wings on this one) and the cheeky blighter even used my item description.
As marvin gaye once said whats going on ? Should have reported it I suppose but it seems ebay are not inclined to follow matters
up judging by other peeps here !

I am aware of that Geoff but I still think its scummy, particularly when the listing didn't mentioned advertised elsewhere so I may pull if it sells there first. I have seen other listings with that in the description. There was significant money bid by bidders on it so not a listing pulled with no bids on it.

It did, but I forgot it was going up in £10's and only tried 486 as I didn't think it was worth more than say 450 anyway. It told me I had to bid at least 496 but to be honest I wasn't fussed for it anyway it would have been tried and possibly sold on very quickly.

I paid more for the 100MCS

To be fair, i weighed up how much a silver rewire would cost (KONDO SILVER FAIRY WIRE @ £275) if i purchased the Ebay one and including the upgraded Arm to Phono cable id want too. The MCS is silver wired and has VDH MCD 502 cable from stub to RCA @ £130 per meter with Eichmann plugs plus £480 for the arm so Total = £880 for the ebay one as i'd want it.

I paid £600 + Postage so i dont think i did too badly really!

It seems the 100MCS goes for around £600 and the 100s go around £500

They are getting a bit rarer so theres always a premium.

Not keen on Ittoks. Used one for a couple of years, but it's not for me. I had a Garrard 401 and swapped between the 774 and Ittok. The 774 sounded far better to me, especially when using Deccas, which did not like the Ittok one bit.

cre009
20-06-2017, 19:09
The normal range for Ittok's from auction bids seems to be £500 - £600. I had one in the 90's on my LP12 and liked it but the ebay prices seem high relative to other options that may be better.

The Ittok LVIII is a nice arm but I still wouldn't pay the current prices, far better arms available for that sort of cash.

Bigman80
20-06-2017, 20:30
Well, I watched a fair few videos of tonearms on youtube and while you cant gauge the quality it does give a general feel of what might come. The Ittok seems very popular but has some well know flaws (not sure what but thats what the reading suggests) the OL arms at the higher prices are very well spoken of but generally a pain to set up (again from what I've read) so the Alphason is a bit of a simplistic arm, set up wise, which suits me. The Mission is a beautifully designed arm. I like its looks and its sound is better. The Alphason is coming in as an underdog in my eyes.

When at the Beeb, in about '72, we had a pair of monitors in one of the Multiple Control Positions which used that unit, and I was blown away by it.

A couple of years later a neighbour asked me what to consider purchasing and he went on to buy MS700s, and these beat my Tannoy Golds.

Despite being lovely unit, it has marked limitations, but is a pioneering bit of design.

These sorts of people are little more than con merchants, setting a trap for the lazy or the trusting ... of course it is always caveat emptor, but a vendor like this is setting a trap for novices and it's not pretty.

The SME Model 10 is a very good turntable. The sound is very neutral with solid controlled bass. Build quality is second to none too!!

But yeah, the price is a bit rich for that used example. (Even with that arm)

They do look very tidy. No pics of the drivers though and seller seems to be saying he hasn't personally tested them.

Blimey. Over forty quid for a Sonotone ceramic cartridge. There was a time when this would have just been slung in the bin!

I don't think they're crossovers. They are marked 'Line (100 volts)'. Probably from a factory or hospital PA system or similar.

Now there's a coincidence! I saw the very same pair at a local boot sale a few weeks ago. Clearly a transformer - allowing the choice of 100V line operation or 15 Ohm speakers. I love the 'hermaphrodite' Bulgin connectors.

Would like to hear one, could be a bit marmite like the well-tempered I suspect. Seems a lot of money for what it is ... you could have a jolly nice Garrard 401 or even at TD124 plus an FR64S for that sort of cash.Could that be the same Bo Hansson who did that Lord of the Rings album in the 70s?

Far less bargains to be had now compared with 10 years ago when I started on there.

If you get in fast when you first see a buy it now some sellers dont know what they have. However thats usually on a saved search and Ive seen the new listing before anybody else.

Bidding on anything semi popular will not result in a bargain these days. Everybody gets a bit lucky once in a while but its not something that can be relied on.

I am interested to see what bargains people are still getting but you cant have had much competition :)

Rogers Export Monitors, didn't think that they used KEF bass units, in the past only seen Dalesford bass units.

To my ears, the KEF B200 is inferior, midrange is much more coloured.

The bass drivers are wrong. Those are B200 SP1014 from the KEFkit version of the Chorale (KEFkit 2 I believe). That small magnet version of the B200 is unsuited to reflex loading and was designed for a 20L sealed cabinet. Those Rogers are basically 'salvage' now. I hope any prospective buyers do their homework.

Nah. I used to tell sellers about this sort of thing years ago, but half the time they don't want to know, so I no longer bother. Let the buyer do their homework.

I also think they are wrong, however, manufacturers sometimes do odd things, The Lecson Lynette speakers were designed using Daleford bass units, however, as far as I know production generally used the KEF B200 SP1014. Recently, a friend got some Lynettes and replaced the B200s with Dalesford bass units and the improvement was quite apparent.

I understand that the owner of the Lynettes recently corresponded with the designer, Stan Curtis, who agreed that the Dalesford was much better for sound quality in this speaker.

Incidentally, the Lynette modified? (in fact back to original design) is a good speaker, friend is very pleased with them, he has many well know and respected speakers too.

On Gumtree. Linn index Mk.2 speakers and Denon mini system. Asking price £500. Crazy! I'd not give more than £60 for the speakers and £50 for the mini system. I'd not want that lot anyway, the Index speakers are pretty grim!
