It is very similar to the Dr Aubrey Sandman class S system which he sued Technics over and unfortunately lost.
Dr Aubrey Sandman .
Great name.

True - which is why the Decca is the one fixed-coil cartridge I always have available for use in my system, as an alternative to the various MC I use.

I should have said "permanently available". My ADCs are high compliance and need to be used in (very) low mass arms, so are only listened to occasionally.
My Deccas are less fussy about the arms used (though they are fussy about setup!)

That's the beauty of using the Mission 774 arm. It will work well with any cartridge from ADC's to Deccas and various MC's with little messing about. And sound pretty damn good doing so. It suits me as I do like to chop and change carts and I don't want to run more than one arm or turntable (even though I have quite a few :)).
The ADC 25s have a compliance of 50cu, so need an arm having an effective mas of ~ 4g or lower.
Rather than change arm wands, I change the entire arm, each of which are mounted on their own arm board. I have more than one turntable and a Decca is always mounted on one of them. (With the Decca Mk.III, that would be either in an upgraded Decca ffss (Super) arm, or on an SME 3009 using the D3 adaptor. Other Deccas are fitted to fairly heavy headshells and used with an SME with the damping dashpot fitted.)

I saw that before but I couldnt make it add up to £6k. If you sold them individually it'd be in the region of £4K absolute tops. Bit of a dreamer I guess. But the the TD124 does seem to be attracting a lot of total chancers these days.

The pre-amp is only wanted by collectors, and the tuner is of limited appeal.

I'd rate the Mk.IV elliptical above the Mk.V Gold or any other colour. It's a 'bigger' sound.
You don't need an adaptor. It has standard 1/2 inch spaced screw mounting. It's a fairly deep cartridge and would need longish bolts to mount.

My Mk.IV was used in a Decca International arm. Wish I'd kept it. Still, I have a couple of MK.III ellipticals tucked away and a couple of FFSS arms to match them.
You will note the observation about hum fields. The pre Mk.V Deccas like a hum free environment,

I finally got the compliance data 30cu horizontal, 6 vertical. So how does that work with arm matching? You need a lightweight arm horizontally and a heavy one vertically. Tracking all less than 1g. Sounds tricky.

I was using a PL-71 in my main rig until I came across an Elite Rock 2. Loved the midrange of the Pioneer, preferred the bottom end and flexibility of arm choice with the Rock.
Good luck with the sale.

I wouldn't take them if they paid me $50! Reminds me of some Sansui speakers I owned in the early '80's. 6mm plywood box, no division between drivers inside, no internal braces. Tiny magnets on the rear of each speaker. Pure junk.

Looks near-identical to the Dynavector tonearms, one of which Martin T (ex of this parish) uses. I presume that Abis are rather like Jelco, in that they make arms for high-end manufacturers to essentially 're-badge' as their own?

A lot less 'hideous' than the Alphason IMO, and far more professional looking - but then we ought not be swayed by looks alone. Wood has very good damping properties, but has only been used in a few arms (the only vintage arm that come to mind is the ADC 40), but I believe there are some recent modern arms that use wood (the Schroeder (?)).
I suspect it's more difficult (expensive) to fashion and drill out a wooden arm than it is to bend a metal tube.

Marco.
It may look superficially similar to the Dynavector, but the Dynavector is a bi-axial arm: the pivot for vertical motion are not co-located with those handling horizontal movement. As such the Dynavector has a considerably lower effective mass in the vertical plane (~ 6g I think), than it does in the horizontal plane (~30g).
Whilst the Abis does have slightly dissimilar values, they are closer (19/26g vert/horiz) because the pivot points are closer.
The Abis is made for a Japanese distribution company called Silbatch' presumably on an OEM basis. I could well be made by Jelco (who I suspect also make the Ortofon badged arms for Ortofon, but I could be wrong).

I must admit I liked it - its a good arm and works a treat with a DL103.
I suspect it's more difficult (expensive) to fashion and drill out a wooden arm than it is to bend a metal tube.
looking at the pictures it just got a groove on the underside with a metal tube for stiffness and to carry the wires.

Yes I know, but I was talking in general (or rather speculating) about the Schroeder and (vintage) ADC wood arms.

Seller says he bought them from Emporium for £750. Emporium always ask top dollar these days so knock off 20% from that and you're about right.
They may be rare and very good but people don't want big, 1970s looking speakers anymore so that affects the value more than anything.

I'd imagine that combination of driver and crossover may work rather well. It's not a question of the crossover "driving". The 1kHz crossover is basically similar for the 15" and 12" units and should give decent enough results, although the sensitivity of the 15" driver is slightly higher.

Well they'll certainly sound like proper Tannoys. The 15" driver is a close relative of the 12" one in my Cheviot II speakers and mine are the best sounding Tannoys I've owned bar none. And, yes, I've had Monitor Golds and HPD's.
The Puma is a compact stage monitor and not designed for deep bass. Those drivers are crying out for some big cabinets.
The SRM 15X is essentially the same driver in a decent sized cabinet. A pair of those will likely set you back a couple of grand.

If I was near Edinburgh I would be tempted to take a punt on this having owned Harbeths in the past.
It's interesting that no pics are shown of the rears where the amps apparently were. Must be quite a mess, but I guess fixable.

Anyway whoever buys this speaker also has the chance to buy some very tatty flight cases that the seller is flogging for a remarkable grand.

There's little information on these SMC AS40s but the few reviews I can find rate them highly... Must be worth much more than the current £1 price on them http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/222644933606

The mids foam looks like it's had its day which is expected from these early speakers and the tweeter is widely available. Not that much work imo.

Could make better boxes.
That's an awful lot of work. The NS-1000 boxes are thick dense ply and heavily braced. Or at least the sectioned boxes I saw Yamaha displaying were. Just getting the rebates right would be pretty demanding.
Stripping the poorly applied veneer off the cabinets of these ebay ones shouldn't be too hard. Then it's just a clean-up, make good and repaint. I could do it and so could other members.

+1 Totally agree
That's not a simple cabinet: They're more than 30Kg a piece so the advice is very sound.
I accept your superior knowledge on the NS1000 boxes - I have no knowledge of their construction.
If you have a final settling on those speakers, the motivation to replicate and even improve may be worth it although a lot of work. I would perhaps consider if doing it making narrower fronted ones though.
My most recent own boxes have 53 wood braces in each and are 'rock dead.

I doubt a much narrower cabinet can be achieved, taking into acount the significant sidewall thickness.

I agree - there's not even a remote whiff of any BBC or LS3/5A associations which normally account for exaggerated prices.
Well Geoff, in 1967 as apprentices, they were a sort of revelation - the ones with the two angled plastic tweeters that is, but yes even by the early 70s they were just another speaker, and now a historical artefact.
Yes Tony, there is no association with the BBC heritage, but there is with that free era of abundance and social revelation in which there was a lot of technical development money.

Not really a HI Fi speaker, the plastic coned tweeters did not go up as high as the much better paper coned one used on the 350. Also the 450 did have a very small magnet. That said, the 450 could make quite a bit of noise from a low powered amplifier, so connecting it to a radio or record player with a poor speaker could result in an improvement.

Joking apart , whats it worth??
I think it depends if you want to use it or collect it.
I'm 100% sure there's quite a few vinyl rigs on the forum put together at 5-10 per cent of that asking price that could boast superior performance. (IMNSHO mine would be one of them!).
Collectors have a logic of their own of course, rarity or reputation being worth more than sound quality and the horrid word 'investment' creeping in, the assumption there's a 'greater fool' out there who would pay even more at some future date.
Not being one of their number I have no idea if the seller is a total piss taker or whether there's a queue forming.
Anyone with a spare £50,000 loose in their pocket?

It is actually a bit more than that, as you need to add 21% vat to the price as well.
The seller is based in the EU, so no VAT payable.
The deck advertised is the EMT 927, a broadcast standard deck capable of playing 16" LPs. For some audio enthusiasts it is the Holy Grail of rim drive (idler) TTs. The 927 along with its smaller brother, the EMT 930, are especially revered in Japan. I saw a shrink-wrapped sample in perfect condition in an up-market audio salon when I visted Japan a few years ago.
I have a 930 which I love, but your are largely restricted to using the (albeit excellent) EMT cartridges. One can, with a bit of manual dexterity, fit other cartridges into an emplty TSD-G headshell, but it's a tight fit.

Only VAT free within the EU if the buyer has a valid VAT number, otherwise it’s plus 21%. Since this listing is priced excluding VAT, I presume that the seller is confident that it will end up somewhere like the Far East.

The seller is in Japan where everything of vintage audio is overpriced.
Yes £300 is nearer the current mark. I sold a fixed headshell SME arm here a couple or so years ago for £175 and that was underpriced.
