View Full Version : Bargains on ebay? (Part 2)
It's just good old market forces at work. If they're over-priced, they won't sell. I don't see that the motive for the sale comes into it, really, though a good sob-story might help push the sale along.
...be interesting to see what this 'nothing special' pair go for by comparison:

Tannoy 603's with original stands..delivered for £58.99.........got to be a bargain for someone...
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Tannoy-603-Speakers-With-Original-Stands-/191689235301?hash=item2ca1919b65#shpCntId
Just to say I picked these up for the study system. They sound great! Actually a better match for the small room than the JPW P1's I've been using (which need a recone - I might even have a crack at that myself, the surround are only about £12 off ebay). I haven't unpacked the stands (they disassemble) but will tuck them away for possible future use.
Not DCs I know but they have a charm about them and bags of detail. I'm very surprised for under £60 posted.

I was looking for a 2TB hard drive to back up my music library when I came across http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321865329540?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT
The seller seems to have mixed up his 1TB and 2TB price I reckon. So grab yourself a bargain if you are looking for a bigger portable drive. I bought one already :).

Numpty selling system. He says the amp is 400 watts. Well it is, but that's the mains rating. It's probably about twenty watts output. What he doesn't realise, is that the speakers are made by Isophon and have super quality drive units in them and are worth more than he's asking for the lot.

Never mind the shiny dustcaps. Some excellent speakers have used them. JBL and Fostex drivers for instance. The Isophon stuff is first rate. Those midrange units were getting on for £100 a pair new.

Thirty five years ago, I bought a virtually identical cabinet via a local noticeboard. The contents were a white Garrard 301 with SME 3009 and Shure V15, Leak Troughline tuner, Point One preamp and Stereo 20 power amp, all in mint condition. At the time, what is now regarded as 'classic' gear was just thought of as old hat. The whole lot cost me £25! (£25 back then was a fair amount, but it was still a bargain)

Me too, about the same time, bought from a second hand shop in Edgware near the junction of Station road and the Edgware Road. Same cabinet, but containing 2 x Quad II power amps, Quad 22, Quad FM1 and stereo decoder. I can't remember what the turntable was, don't think it was anything special. Whole lot was also £25.
You guys got the better bargain: I paid £25 for a pair of Quad IIs and a Quad 22 preamp alone.

It's funny (or sad) to see the prices the Leak and Quad valve amps fetch now. I had four Stereo 20s and a couple of sets of Quad IIs and the most I paid was £40 apart from the last Stereo 20 which cost me £80 and needed rebuilding. The transformers were OK and it was tidy cometically, so with about £20 worth of parts (I had spare valves), I suppose that one totalled £100.

It's one thing to bid, another to honour that bid and pay...
Museum pieces and the provinence of owning those pieces amongst fellow fans is one reason it has nothing to do with sound, plus some foreign buyers from certain places will rather have these items and not the cash - means their money is no longer under state controls but instead in assets which aren't controlled.
Indeed, but to see that the world has come to this, being afraid of owning our own money... well that's another affair for a different place.

OK. You need another pair of System 600s and an EL34 amp from Audion. A cheap Pioneer PD-S505 Precision (every bit as good as the Meridian 206) and Theta or Monarchy Audio DAC. That's magic!
Ive certainly come to the conclusion that the starting point is to get a set of speakers you can live with and that are fairly flexible, by being an easy load. After you have that sorted then the rest is just mixing about till you find the right mix.... but dont switch the speaks unless its better of the same.

That's a little over the top "that the world has come to this" - there are far more important things happening in the world
There are people in the world who have a lot of money and it's like water to them. Sometimes, also that money should never, morally speaking be in their hands.. so it's best for them to turn it into physical objects rather than digital cash, numbers in a bank account which can be siezed, wiped from existance etc. It has always been so for thousands of years (except it would have been on a ledger instead of digital cash). That's what the art and antique markets have been used for for hundreds of years too so perhaps now is the time for electronics to enter than realm.. no reason for it not to.

Dunno about that though! Might sound just as good but there is no way the Pioneer will feel as good to use, feel as solid and satisfying than the Meridian - definately lacking in some areas in comparison. Those Pioneers, unless the top models (PD-95, PD-93 etc), feel very cheap and plasticy to me.

I've had a couple of pairs. They're getting rare now, but are one of B&Ws better efforts. The seller mentions the LS3/5A and in fact these do share some of that taut, clean, 3D character of sound. They are sealed cabinets and don't boom. Bit of an unsung classic in my view.

Having owned and used both alongside each other, I'd say, yes the Pioneer is of lighter construction, but well made and slicker in operation. They are definitely on a par for sound. Both make excellent transports. I sold the Meridian 206 and keep two Pioneer PD-S505 Precision CD players (as well as a Meridian 507 and Trichord Research Digital Turntable).

Have borrowed three different sets of E's from PQ over the years, the last ones being the fancy silver-wired, silver voice-coiled high efficiency jobbies. With assorted amps also borrowed including the silver sig version of the Oto phono, a Meishu silver sig and some Conquest (or Conqueror - can't remember) monoblocks.
None of them floated my boat and I was glad to get back to the old Tannoys with a bit of push-pull power up them.
Why three sets? Well I really wanted to see what the fuss is about. But in the end I have to conclude I really don't get E's at all, big boomy, floppy cabinet things that aren't a proper floor stander but take up a floorstander amount of space, rear ported as well so a pig to position in a lot of rooms ... the smaller ones (Ks and Js) are better. (I had some Snell Js for a bit and they were good fun - for a couple of hundred quid ....).

Well I own a DV-717, but it's quite a while since I used a NAD 524, so I can't say exactly how they'd compare. Both are good. I have a sneaking suspicion the NAD might edge it though. It's a good player that had loads of very positive reviews when released and it's pretty compact, tiny in fact compared to the 717, which could be handy. A mate of mine has my old one and he never uses it. I'm tempted to get it back actually. I reckon it would stand comparison to my Pioneer PD-S505 Precision, which is one of my favourite players (I have two actually).

Yes. They are rubbish. I've heard them, horrible, terribly coloured little monstrosities. The Jordan Watts drivers are not that great anyway and the dodgy enclosure does them no favours. Ludicrous price!!

He is having a giraffe. These speakers are rare solely because they were crap and no-one bought them. The drivers may be worth £20 at a push. I quite like the Jordan/Bandor stuff on the whole, though.
Like the fact that he will keep them if they fail to sell, logic there I suppose ? Make a nice wine container btw

No mention of batteries in that listing that I can see Grant. Mine certainly does not use any. It's a cracking amp!
This amp has now become my favourite 'reasonably priced' integrated, I usually subscribe to the Denon PMA-350SE school of thought (great amp).
Being an older amp (circa 1990), it's less likely to have loads of relays and 'logic' bits to play up. Mine is fine.

S'vintage innit? F***ing hipsters.
I don't know what this term "hipster" is now supposed to mean to people who don't live in East London (like I do) but items at high prices like these are normally sold by middleaged men who are have made their money flipping houses and whos dress style is exclusively some Polo or Ted Baker shirts tucked into light blue jeans and brown belt. Perhaps they're used to buying over-priced retro stuff at Nottinghill's decades old, expensive shops - far from hipster land in time and place.
That or the usual wheeler-dealer, old time cockneys, in their 60s and finding they can sell shit to people in Chelsea for massively over-priced amounts.
People bordering on being hipsters I see about are after cheap stuff themselves, more into skip finds than trying to get £400 for a £60 pair of speakers.

A year or more ago, I would have agreed. But they are very thin on the ground now. There was a dud one with a £200 asking price not long ago. When you think about it, a good ADC, although sounding different, ranks alongside the vintage Deccas and Ortofons for sheer sound quality and those command big money now.

It is quality, though! Have you got any idea how much that stuff would've originally cost individually? ;)
Marco.
It would have cost a bomb. But the tuner and tape decks are practically worthless - £200 for the lot, £50 for the digital processor, maybe £500 for the power amp and CDP. Speakers a couple of hundred, tops. Realistically the whole caboodle isn't worth more than 2 grand.
Undeniably, the price is a little 'toppy', but the seller knows that Sony ES equipment is desirable, and some of it rare. I know where you're coming from, but I think you're undervaluing it.
The most desirable items for me are the amps, particularly the big power amp with the VU meters, which is a truly superb thing, and rare as rocking horse shit. That alone is probably worth £1.5k. I doubt that many would've seen the light of day in the UK.
If he knocked a grand off of the total price, it'd make it realistic.
Marco.

I don't dispute the balking at the price in general.
But this listing is by a dealer who sells them new at £800 and this is ex-dem, not priced up in anyway because it's used like you suggest. It's a discounted ex-dem item like all dealers do.

It's a dealer selling one at 60% the rrp new price - nothing to do with hiking prices because it's used like you suggest.
Who would buy one in the first place though must have enough money that £4k is a few hours work - some lawyers do earn that much, in which case people should feel free to release them of that burden of wealth!
I met a guy who's neighbour is an audiophile lawyer who is divorced and works works works and spending £10k on a cable is his only "pleasure" in life - poor sod. Shame the guy I met wasn't into hifi - I'd be round there "borrowing" things and forgetting to return it.

Thats been on for weeks now , keeps getting a cheaper start price :)
I had MX113 preamp/tuner for a few weeks and it sounded great with my JBL4313BWX, but a flagship C33 should be even much better: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/111809795083
Tempted but i better not

Nice traditional unbranded universal headshell. Similar to PL-12D item. From US, but cheap enough!

Not the last word in sound quality maybe, but would look authentic on a vintage turntable.

That'll go nice with the King, Hazy Fantazy, and Smiley Culture albums in your collection .
That's Audio Al you're thinking of ;) Surprised he has not been on this already there is a fair smattering of pishanto in that lot from the look of it.

Mayware T-24 SUT and MC-2 cartridge. The cart needs a rebuild, but probably worth it. The SUT is decent. Looks like these will be reasonably cheap!
