Very serious prices for 800 ohm Philips AD9710 drive units being asked these days.

Vintage Philips RH541 motional feedback speakers. In need of fettling and ending very soon.

I remember hearing these at a show in the seventies and being astonished at the amount of grunt they had. Albeit rather lacking in neutrality.

I've got a pair of the 3 way versions of these in my garage. They don't work of course. My mate (who's in the trade) had a look at them but said access is so bad in the back of them that it was uneconomical to try to repair them and sadly, I'm not clever enough.

Not sure what the seller means when he says the deck is missing the platter. According to the photos both the main platter and the slip platter are there. Cosmetically it's not too good, but just needs a good clean.

I paid ~ £2K for mine; a late model complete with TSD15 sfl cartridge and new idler as well as a custom plinth and full set of leads (Siemens to XLR). It came from a seller in Hungary.

A UK dealer put up one of these for sale about 10 years ago (about the same time I bought my 930). From memory think he wanted quite a bit for it, but I don't remember if it included an arm and cartridge. Nor do I know what condition it was in.

As you say there is little call for 16 2/3 rpm. Were I to find any such recordings I suppose I could always play them on my Thorens TD 124.

what amps would they have been originally meant for in the leak range Adam?

At that point, Leak were part of Rank and they had no strategy when it came to matching their range, speakers had been handed, more or less to Wharfedale and electronics, as has been mentioned were often rebadged Rotel or developed by them. As I recall there was little in the way of cross pollination, from teams whose resented being part of Rank and resented having to prop up the hollowed out Leak company. A bad time for three proud british HiFi brands, Rank really were rank. This is my personal opinion, says the man who is aware of libel law.

Thanks all. I thought they looked out of sorts for early 70s. Yes the rank link was not great I believe. Was just interested. Paul seems to have the info spot on from what I can see.
I've got some parts in order so when put together and assuming they don't explode I will run them first with a set of full range. The celestions I think.

Great Price!
That said; the 10's were unfortunately the 'bungled' DC's.
Much less than expected bass and the incredible (what were they thinking?)
Mismatch of Lf Voice coil with the Pepperpot horn.. significantly Messed the Crossover transition.
So iffy bass and odd midrange effects ?
Not ideal and it certainly let the Side down

The 10" IIILZ Golds were not great, but the 10" HPD295A is a very good unit. It is certainly not short of bass, even the small Eaton packs a useful, if not hugely extended punch. I've owned several pairs of each. I agree that the IIILZ is rather limited. But in a larger cabinet, the HPD295A can perform excellently. It is after all, basically a late series 12" Monitor Gold with a reduced chassis and the mid and top are as good as any.

Nearest I got to those was a pair of their rear ABRs, which I put in large cabinets along with brand new Tannoy IIILZ drivers. It worked OK. This was a little while ago. :)

SME 3009 with adaptor and Decca Mk.III.

Started cheap earlier today. 3 bids and now up to £190 with nearly a week to go. This one is going to fly! Especially as there interest from Japan.

I'm minded of a pair of Monitor Golds in Lancaster cabs in lovely condition that appeared on Gumtree locally a year or two ago for £400. They were snapped up in minutes. They re-appeared a week or so later with some story about a recently deceased uncle or such and were priced around £1200 IIRC. Some people are shameless.

When I started the thread it was in response to a genuine bargain that I had seen on eBay. However in anticipation that some items do and would go for silly money, I added the question mark to the title.

Sadly eBay has become so successful, genuine bargains are now few and far between. I've had a few (a Nagra IV-S reel-to-reel machine, some cartridges and camera lenses), but nowadays I take quiet comfort in looking the grossly elevated prices of gear I bought years ago for a song.

You've got to take inflation into account. At our age 20 years passes like nothing so that amp or deck you bought for £1000 in 1996 and is now selling for, say, £2300 is still valued about the same as you paid then. It's your money that is worth less.

It's definitely got a lot of drive units, but they are cheap generic items and appeared in many Japanese speakers. That's not to say they'll sound bad though. Sansui and JVC amongst others sourced similar units for their products.

I agree with Andre, those old bits are barely Hi-Fi.

What's the rush Taz? Start a thread in the 'Blank Canvas' area saying what you want to achieve. Outline your budget and what type of gear you want. You'll get some good advice. Don't just buy any old thing. There are plenty of bad choices out there and some good ones. Good sounds don't have to cost a fortune if you buy wisely.

Excellent. Decide what equipment you will actually use and work out how much you can spend on each bit.

What sources do you want to use? Records, CDs, computer derived music? It's good to get a decent source. You can skimp a bit on an amplifier to start off with. A cheap but respectable one will still give you sound. Even speakers don't need to be a huge expense --- I'd give some thought to how big you want these. Floor standing, stand mounted compact speakers or small bookshelf items.

I've got plenty of speakers can choose from I mean at the moment I've got 7 pairs around the flat, not all being used mind. In the living room i'm running a Onkyo receiver that controls the audio and video for my movies or music which is fed through a laptop (only used for media).
Had this for a bit now and feel like something is missing... I'm old school when it comes to this stuff (this Onkyo to me is like a computer with all its menus and settings) an would rather have a separate amp, eq, DAC etc that I can chop and change as need be and improve slowly on one item at a time.

Normally I would have been grinding my teeth by now thinking of what a deal I missed on that Kenny but you guys helped me think straight and I'm very grateful for your help. As you recommended I'm going to save up a few quid then ask on this forum.

Great bunch of guys and girls here and know I'll be looked after.

I don't know what speakers you may have. But a great little speaker is the original Mission 780SE, like this:

http://i63.tinypic.com/xkw1ud.jpg

Not to be confused with the basic 780 (which is still OK) or the different looking later version, which is not in the same league in my view. These 780SE speakers have a really well integrated and very musical sound and kick well above their weight. I had a pair in my system for a few years alongside my big Tannoys and they were a delight. Mission got it right with these. They are popular with quite a few members here.

They need to be re-coned as the previous owner blew one bass driver and a guest put a ciggy burn in the other bass driver. Saw on here a thread where a user was selling some ul-8 bits and was going to ask him what I should expect to pay for these drivers. The x overs look OK tbh but will be recapped when time and funds allow. They did come with the original stands too.

Well 0 would be short circuit and on digi meter 1 would be open circuit. being short would not possibly be nice for equipment. maybe best to check it.. open it may be the wire broken

This is what I was thinking too and from what I've been reading it is the most likely cause.
I'm going to attempt getting into it tomorrow... Will tread very carefully and look at the wires with a score, I've got a meter on order so will measure it when that arrives.

Thanks Andr'e, yes they do have the same tweeter. There's one currently on eBay at £57 plus PP and really don't want to be spending that at the minute. These will slowly get refurbed asking with the UL-8s, now have to stop buying speakers, the misses has started to give me that death stare :nono:

If you are lucky. It will be the small bit of wire visible between the dome and terminal that has failed, it happens on these tweeters and if you're handy with a small sioldering iron it can often be fixed, maybe with a bit of fine wire let in.

That's most likely. The 295 8 had foam surrounds that rotted pretty fast, unlike the 295 A which has rubber roll surrounds and seem to last indefinitely.

Shame really. They could have been repaired easily enough. I just happen to have a box in this room containing two ten inch paper Tannoy cones with rubber surrounds that would have gone straight in :).

This Croft pre amp (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/262490502714?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT) looks to be a bit of a bargain at the mo.

Lots of bids though, so it may go daft later...

There's these Sonab OA5 Type ii - Omnidirectional Loudspeakers (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Sonab-OA5-Type-ii-Omnidirectional-Loudspeakers-Philips-9710-/252424564361)at just £75 and a Linx Nebula Integrated Amplifier (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Linx-Nebula-Integrated-Amplifier-mm-mc-phono-stage-/252430508397?hash=item3ac607e16d:g:mfMAAOSwMNxXZln ~) from the same seller. I'm not familiar with the amp, but looks good for £55.

Oi, quiet. I'm currently working on the justification to add a Michell Hydraulic alongside the Spacedeck. You'll ruin all my hard work!

I don't know. I've had it for over 25 years. I'm quite tempted to get a heavy kit for it...

I've not yet heard anything that beats the Spacedeck (and that was with the original arm - the Ace Space takes it to another level) and I've compared it to a Townshend Rock, an LP 12 and a PT Too.

But I do love the Michell.

I reckon that would be a close thing and I'd not like to pick a winner. But I'm certain they will sound very different.

If anybody wishes to know, the collection is: Two Toshiba SR-370s, four Goldring Lenco GL75s, one Goldring Lenco GL68, one Connoisseur BD1, one Pioneer PL-61, one Pioneer PL-15S.

Seems I was out by one. The total is ten. Some are in bits though. Now which should I keep? that's the question. :hmm:

You only need two max tbh. Maybe with 1 to work on. Say me with 5 sets of speakers

Hmm. I'm looking at four pairs right now and I have enough bits to build about another ten pairs.

And of course, then there's the selection of CD players and amps.

Bought this yesterday.has to be a bargin.. I bought one of these new in the mid 80's.. Technics are the only tape decks i could ever get on with + they are more reliable than those overrat'turd decks that will remain unnamed ;)
