Quite a few vlaves have radiatio warnings on them Thorium Oxide is a low level radioactive substance and the yellowish green glass at the bottom of the valve will most likely be Uranium glass, commonly called Vaseline Glass which again is mildly radioactive and glows bright green under flourescent light. Uranium glass provides a better seal to large connector pins over a wider temperature range than normal glass.

The radiation warning is most likely to refer to the uranium glass. Thorium oxide, as used in the cathode/heater, is an alpha emitter, however the alpha particles would be easily absorbed by the glass envelope.

Yes Thorium is principally an alpha emitter but it's not unheard of that it can also emit small quamtities of beta and gamma radiation.

I have some thoriated valves with noe uranuim glass that have radioactive warning notices so I would assume there are warnings wherever there is the sightest possibility of any type of radiation including alpha particles when the containment is fragile.

Agree - the "containment" is fragile.
Some photographic lenses used thoriated glass (for example the 55mm F/2 Steinheil lens). There was concern that being in close proximity to the eye (when fitted to a 35mm camera) there could be a health risk. The risk was minimal as the radiation was absorbed in the glass itself and blocked or absorbed by the metalwork of the lens and camera.

Nice speakers. The models with the tweeter level switch are supposed to be better balanced and easier to match to room. Very low levels of cabinet colouration IMHO.

One major thing is that these are designed to work close/up against a rear wall (little baffle step correction applied on these) and will sound bass light if moved out in the room.

Bass port (2 I think) is in the bottom of the cabinet.

The tweeters are now unobtanium.

You probably won't recognise it. Most who might know ADCs seeing this will say "Ah an ADC 26". It's not. It's the mega rare ADC 27, for which I have a couple of spare styli, but no cartridge. But now hopefully, I have. It sits between the model 26 and 10E Mk.IV in the range and is a fabulous and very useable non MC cartridge. A real bit of early seventies esoterica.

I thought I'd grab it. There were a few 'watchers'.

I was wrong. It's arrived and it's an ADC 26 in decent nick. The colour of the listing photo mislead me into thinking it was a 27. Result anyway! :)

were pioneer pl12D turntables any good? Having read a little on them tonight they seem to be reasonably well regarded as a budget deck. I've had loads of them. They work well enough and will sound OK, but not outstanding. But for the money they are good enough though, the arm will cope with a budget MC cartridge (but not a high compliance MM) and they just go on forever 'cos they're well built. Just give them a bit of lube and a new belt every year or two. That price looks OK by current standards.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Ethos-ls5-12a-speaker-cabinets-with-dynaudio-drivers-and-crossover-/221679887562?
The add says quite clearly that they are Ethos cabs, and Dynaudio drivers. A kind of Diy/kit job me thinks, there is no Ethos badge, only 2 spk terminals rather than the Ethos 4 etc. The 3rd question obviously some interested party has not read the description that well, and seems to think they are Ethos speakers. What i hate is that the seller rather then say look at description again etc, kind of leads the buyer on. iI can understand they want as much as they can get, but for me i find that dishonest and see this sort of thing happen more and more. Nice speakers though.

Not really, Would need a crossover re-design. In my view B110 does not really make a good midrange unit, needs a complicated crossover to get it sounding reasonable.

Peerless KO40MRF might make a better replacement.

Crazy people out there. A pair of early seventies KEF Cresta speakers selling at £255! Why?

They are nasty sounding little things, the crude crossover does them no favours and they don't even have matching bass drivers.

I could certainly use some smaller old style banana plugs of around 3mm diameter. Regular 4mm are too big for one application I have in mind.

Yeah, I get that, dude, which is why I wrote what I did in the last part of my post. I totally get the originality thing :)

However, the ebay sale Andy linked to is just a jumble of 'old bits', not specific to any vintage amp, which is why I said, what's the point?

Why would you bother when the best modern examples are so superior (one area where real progress has been made in audio), unless sourcing specific NOS speaker plugs and sockets for a specific make of vintage amp? :)

Marco.

Because the Belling Lee silver plated speaker plugs are actually very good and I doubt that there are any modern speaker plugs that are significantly better

It's good stuff, but I now generally prefer using thick gauge solid-core cable for mains leads. Makes sense, as that's what's in the wall already (with twin & earth), and plus it sounds better, to my ears, than multi-strand, except in low-current applications, such as with CDPs and small PSUs :)

I cannot be doing with Stiff Mains cable they have to be flexible.. For that i use Black Rhodium Ag plate Cu Mains cable.

Marco
18-02-2015, 13:13
It can be a PITA to solder/work with, but after that, I just find that the finished solid-core mains leads bend into whatever shape you want them (kind of like heavy-duty wire wool), so I don't find their stiffness a problem.

Better stiff than floppy, I say (and Tabatha agrees)! :eyebrows:

Marco.

The Barbarian
18-02-2015, 13:16
Not referring to the workability i am referring to the factors such as you need a lot of space behind equipment, you cannot use short runs etc..No excess leads on my gear they have all be tailored for neatness, it's not possible with a stiffy :eyebrows:

Marco
18-02-2015, 13:24
Hehehe... No worries.

I can use short runs because the dedicated mains for the hi-fi is directly behind my system (no more than 1m away from the kit), which has plenty of space behind it, so I can arrange everything neatly. Therefore, 'stiffies' aren't a problem. Mine have nice thick 'bell-ends' (plugs) on them, too! :D

I had this pairing in the eighties - with the upper preamp in the listing - I think it was 170 watts into four ohms, less into eight. I made it from a kit. Not too shabby - I seem to remember it easily seeing off my mates Naim kit (NAP 160?). I replaced it with a Krell KSA 100 mk2/KSL. Better, yes, but the Crimson stuff stayed with me for nearly a decade very happily and musically.

You can add Marvin Gaye to that list.

Original 35 year old Dynavector 10X high output MC cartridge. I had one new back then, they weren't very expensive but sounded rather nice. This looks like a good example. The seller has decent stuff.

Yes. I had the pre and a couple of power amps (can't recall model Nos.). I found them bland, particularly the pre. Moved on to a Quantum pre/power. So much better.

Yup. They are not a model I know. Presumably a forerunner to the Audiometric. I'm assuming these just have a simple twin cone driver. It sure ain't a Dual Concentric. They are only of curiosity or collection value.

Yes they called em Modular series '101'/'103'/'104'/'105'..
Later on there was a whole different series that was truly a Modular jobbie was the Nextel Zebra {componet amp} These came out in the early 80's..

Im your man for Quantum Electronics Had '101'/'402'/ 2X205'.. Alser had '207DA' That Dual Active '207' was a great amp. You could power the '102' pre from the '207' or use the dedicated '402' PSU for the Pre...

On that note if i ever saw a mint Crimson Elektrik '510'/'520' at a good price id buy it for old times sake, this is the pre/power amp i used to run with the J.A Michell 'Hydraulic Ref' i used to have. Ace days them..

Lol… The point is, they are two totally different speakers with different electrical characteristics and different amplifier requirements, which consequently sound totally different!!

I know because there were 15” Reds originally inside my Lockwood cabs, which sounded nothing like my Golds (pre or post crossover mods). Therefore, to claim that both speakers advertised sound the same is nonsense, and as such, you’d be sat listening to two different sounds coming out of each speaker…………..

Bev, if there were two 15” Monitor Reds inside, those speakers would be worth about £5k (or more), and with Golds inside about £3.5/4k. However, with one of each, they’re worth, well……unless you’re deaf, into MONO and/or are Elton John’s greatest ever fan! :D

So with mis matched drivers what are they worth? In my view nothing... I can't imagine my own speakers with mis matched drivers and I wouldn't pay anything at all for them... ;)

I guess for all the Elton John provenance not meaning a whole lot to us on the forum, there are those for whom it's a big draw.

I'd imagine these will finish up well above their intrinsic worth, because of that provenance.

I'd also imagine, that if they are sold on at some future date, even if the Gold or the Red is replaced by whatever driver makes up the pairing that floats the buyers boat, the drivers here will be included, because they're Elton's drivers, and mismatched though they are, the mismatch is now well known - like it or not, part of the provenance.

Next up a genuine pair of designer fabric ears, the former property of Elton John. Provenance? Unassailable - the Tannoys recently offered on ebay are conclusive proof that Mr Johns ears were in fact cloth...

Shame the original 'oatmeal' grille cloth has been replaced and there's no picture showing the drive units, so no way of telling if they are OK. Doped fabric surrounds on the bass drivers I believe, they are usually sound. They were very musical little speakers, if not that refined.
